Chiefs, Johnson both have incentive to make marriage work
CBS Sports' Charlie Casserly takes a look at the LJ situation. He's a former GM so this is a unique viewpoint and, ultimately, he agrees with the Chiefs moves in this case.
Definitely something you need to read.

I don't get it
I don’t understand the point that LJ has to get a warning, then a fine and then a suspension.
Hasn’t he already engaged in conduct detrimental to the team on multiple occasions? He has been arrested a couple of times and has spoken out publicly about his coaches and teams before. He HAS been warned, fined and suspended in the past, by the Kansas City Chiefs.
Why is this not considered another in a long string of inappropriate actions? Based on his past history they should be able to suspend him and not pay him a dime. All those progressive punishments haven’t done jack. If he were going to grow up and get his act together he would have done it by now.

Completely agree
He has had many opportunities to change but never does. Maybe it’s time he no longer gets treated like a star on this team

here's where the human resources thing kicks in
He HAS been warned, fined and suspended in the past, by the Kansas City Chiefs.
last year he was only made inactive and was paid for the three games the chiefs sat him down. they never officially suspended him. the league suspended him for one game and he did lose that money but the progressive discipline they are talking about refers to a) this specific conduct (last year he was in violation of the personal conduct policy and was suspended by the league) and b) the team has never really done anything to punish him for anything.
the team is at fault for not giving him some form of documented punishment last year for not being able to move to the next step this year. it seems like he’s getting lots of chances but this is how it works in lots of work environments. you have to be warned, then written up a number of times, then given a final warning and then maybe you can get rid of an employee. having a union backing you up only makes it tougher for the employer

Wait so last year wasn't an official suspension?
when they sat him for 3 games? But then the league only sat him 1 because of time served? But when he screws up again it is like the first punishement, the three games, never happened? That is bull shit.

Only one game
the other 3 games he was just inactive. No fines, just a game ck.

They should just do it again then
They have to pay him anyway and he doesn’t produce. That is reason enough to deactivate him.

By my count
Johnson’s only been fined/suspended once before. I’m not sure that counts as “progressive punishment” in the unions mind. But Casserly seems to totally ignore the fact that LJ has been a problem child in the past, even though he wasn’t always punished accordingly. The Chiefs unwillingness to take action early on w/LJ is now biting them in the ass a bit.
by JohnNdallas on Nov 4, 2009 10:02 AM CST reply actions 0 recs
That's exactly the point, John
The union would have a tough time fighting this if LJ had been consistently, progressively disciplined for for the previous problems.

Wich would be more humiliating for LJ?
Being cut and no one signing him while he sits on his ass drawing Millions
Or
Standing on the sidelines of every practice, watching, and then being inactive on game day?
by JohnNdallas on Nov 4, 2009 10:07 AM CST reply actions 0 recs
I don’t know which would be more humiliating for, Larry or the coach.
Putting him on the side lines for the rest of the season is a pretty stiff penalty for running some smack on some dude on his tweeter account and dropping the fg bomb on some hack reporters.
He did have a clean slate coming into the season didn’t he?

I think your uderstating his offense by quite a bit.
by JohnNdallas on Nov 4, 2009 10:17 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
I think I pretty much hit it on the head.
No harm no foul.
I have a question for you, how did you feel when Jared Allen got his 2nd DUI? Did you demand him cut from the team? If you didn’t you need to think about what your true reasons are for wanting L J cut don’t you think?
Just sayin’.
by kcbh on Nov 4, 2009 10:25 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
The true reason people want LJ cut
is because he is an asshole and isn’t producing.
Allen got suspended by the league for his actions and if he screwed up again he was going to be in deep.
He hasn’t by the way and is still prodcing.
If Jared Allen had been old and hadn’t done anything for 2 seasons then people would have been calling for him to release. Risk vs. Reward. Larry is high risk and no reward.

So what you are saying is that a player who gets 3 DUIs is less of a threat to the team than some dude you just don’t like?
I see where you are coming from now.
by kcbh on Nov 4, 2009 11:12 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah!
That about sums it up.
If you ignore the fact that Allen wasn’t a malcontent and that he contributed on game day. Not to mention that Allen has been nothing but a beast on the field and a model (Ted Nugent like) citizen since.
Sounds to me like your trying to make this a race thing.
by JohnNdallas on Nov 4, 2009 11:20 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
I could I make it a race thing? You are the one saying a guy with 3 DUIs is better for the team than another guy who only dissed a twitter troll.
Oh yeah, you did say he was a better player.
My bad.

LJ has been an asshole since the diapers fiasco.
I think people wanting him gone has more to do with the truckloads of baggage he brings. This is just another incident in a long line of them. I wanted him gone when the beating up women shit happened.
Toby is in HR, which technically means he works for corporate, so he's really not a part of our family. Also, he's divorced, so he's really not a part of his family.

Three DUIs ….. ok.
Calling out a tweeter troll ….. not ok.
That doesn’t make any sense.
Oh yeah … when did he ever “beat up a woman.”
Never happened.
It’s a lie.

I never mentioned Jared Allen at all. I merely stated that Larry Johnson is a self-absorbed asshole.
He’s been a boil on that ass of the Chiefs organization for years. To think that idiot Carl Peterson traded down in the draft to pick LJ. We could have Troy Palomalu playing for us, but no! Instead of getting a beast of a D-back we get a running back who still can’t take the diapers off.
If this had been the first incident involving LJ, if he’d been a model citizen up to this point then I think people would be forgiving. But it’s not. The guy has been a whining pain in the ass since he was drafted. He’s been accused of assaulting women on three separate occasions, one involving a fucking gun!
I am glad Carl got fired. He deserved it after he let the offensive line go to shit and the absolutely ridiculous payday he gave to LJ.
Toby is in HR, which technically means he works for corporate, so he's really not a part of our family. Also, he's divorced, so he's really not a part of his family.

and sadly
I was one that didnt want to take the risk on allen…having met him, and each time he was drunk the night before a game at the hotel, I figured no way he gets it together…power to him…
but LJ is far gone, whereas Allen was simply a risk…
Ive wanted LJ gone for a long time, I do regret that allen was made out worse than he is by CP and we dealt him, but I would never regret dumping LJ, even if he went to…an afc west opponent and ran on us for 150 yards, I would just be glad to not have him sitting next to charles, etc.

If you want me to admit that I just don't like LJ
No problem! I admit it, Never have liked him as a person. What’s to like? I think he has some admirable qualities, such as his reported generosity with charities. But no, I don’t like him.

Allen
Never humiliated the fans by reminding them that they’re just “$5/hour” people.

I don’t remember him doing that to a fan, but to be fair, he did say it to a troll on his twitter account.
Is that what you are talking about?

Bustin on fans about their income
Disin his coach for the whole world to read, calling folks fags, twice! Once after having had nearly a day to think about his actions. All that w/ a 2.7 ypc average.
What, in your mind does it take to get sat down or cut?
by JohnNdallas on Nov 4, 2009 10:29 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
You need to work on the facts a bit and quit running with what them losers on 810 whb tells ya. They just do it to get even with the players and to run up their stations ratings.
Work with he on this one.
Look at the facts, get them sorted out and then make a decision.

There is nothing you can say to someone that has made up their mind and twisted the facts to cement it in their dome.
All I can do it hope that one day he will see the light.

What did he say that isn't a fact?
The only thing I can see that is debatable is dissing his coach.
He did drop the F bomb twice. One of them did come after he had a day to think about things. He is averaging 2.7 yards per carry.

Gotta love ole Charlie
I like how he lays it all out there and is in agreement that LJ is a malcontent but the Chiefs were in a tough spot with the NFL and the NFLPA.
I’d have to believe Casserly would have dumped LJ long ago, similar to coach Dungy’s comments.
The big question is how will this work moving forward. If LJ is deactivated each week the rest of the year the Chiefs will recoup the game check bonuses, but I’d imagine the NFLPA might get involved as to why LJ isn’t on the active roster.
This LJ drama is not ending until he’s off the team in the offseason.

Yes... there was no easy way out for the Chiefs
I agree: if the Chiefs deactivate Johnson – or perhaps even just move him back on the depth chart – the union could very well make waves. I’m not saying they’ll necessarily get anywhere – in fact, I would hope they don’t, because it’s a bad precedent – but they could make some noise. UNLESS… a Chiefs RB steps up against Jacksonville.

In fact...
Now that I think about it… the Chiefs made a mistake by starting the suspension during the bye week. They’d have been better off by suspending him for two weeks in which there are GAMES… to give other RBs a better chance to step up.

The Union can't do jack if they just stop playing him
as long as they are paying him. That would be like my boss telling me to not come into work anymore but still paid me every week. The Union can’t make the Chiefs give LJ work to do.

I think it would be funny
to watch him rot away any productivity he might have left on the bench. I’d rather have him sitting than reprsenting the Chiefs on the field.

I hope you're right, Patrick
but I am not as certain of this as you are. The fact is that if Johnson doesn’t play, it affects his value. That’s an issue the union would be interested in.

He was well like amongst younger fans
He just couldn’t handle fans taunting him after a loss and blaming him for this season’s failure
Predictions as of 06.24.2009.
Larry Johnson will be a top 3 fantasy pick once again in 2010 (after a monster season in 2009.)
Dwayne Bowe will be a 2009 Pro Bowl selection.
Brandon Flowers will have at least 6 INTs in 2009 season.
Todd Haley will have a sideline shouting match caught on TV yelling at one of his asst. coaches.
