Todd Haley November 2009 Approval Poll
If the Todd Haley approval ratings can tell us anything, it's that Kansas City Chiefs fans had high expectations for the head coach. Leading up to the regular season, Haley's approval rating was at an all time high - 95%. And it's been crashing the last couple of months.

Whoo-hoo! I got to vote first!
But I’m not going to say which answer was 100% after I voted.

How soon we forget what BAD is.
It is almost like Chiefs fans forget how terrible Herm Edwards was. From what I gather, he held short, weak practices, and wanted to be each player’s best friend. He wanted to be the grandpa instead of the father. It made our team mentality W E A K. And I personally think that is the reason for the ineptitude that we still see. Some people will argue that is was drafting wrong players, or Vermeil ignoring the defense for so long. I disagree. WInning teams have a winning mentality, and it makes it appear that they have the talent. Now, that is not to say winning teams don’t have talented players. It is simply saying that the winning mentality as a team, makes the effort maximized in each player, making them play above themselves. I believe this. The mind is the most powerful of things. It can corrupt you or it can energize you. It is the coaches’ jobs to create this mental environment. And it doesn’t happen by coddling the players and making them like you. It happens when you get a coach that pushes you to the point of hating him. And, you want to do whatever possible to prove him wrong. It instills discipline, and it is a proven method. Todd Haley is the PERFECT coach for the Chiefs right now. He is ALL business. And the first order of that business is changing the mentality on the team. They are going to work for everything they get, and some players don’t like it (DJ). Although, I want to see DJ on the field as much as the rest of you, it HAS to be this way. We want our rookies for years to come to come in and play with an edge, we don’t want anyone complacent. It starts with the coaches and they must win over the veterans first. Then, the veterans lead by example and voice for the youngsters.
The point is this. Todd Haley is getting the short end of the stick right now with the fans, because it is a “what have you done for me lately” league. But truly, in reality, we cannot develop a winning team until the locker room is filled with a winning mental environment. The players have to believe they are warriors. Warriors WANT to go to work, they don’t complain about it.
Just my 2 cents – and a little perspective.

One more thing
As far as Derrick Johnson is concerned, I don’t know this as fact but this is what I see. He has been challenged by the coaching staff, and refuses to prove them wrong. As much as I like his talent, players like this are not part of winning teams. Get your butt (and mind) in gear and prove them wrong. What are you waiting for? Chiefs fans keep bringing up DJ as a negative point when talking about Haley. But, seriously, who is in the wrong here? Is it the coach for making a player earn his spot, or is it a complacent talent who refuses to earn his spot?
Again, this is based on what my eyes have seen and read. If DJ is busting his hump to prove the coach wrong, then I am incorrect. I don’t know for sure, but I don’t see it.
If everyone worked as hard as me, I would be out of a job.

yeah, one more thing ... cuz maybe DJ actually IS busting his butt in practice every day (and no, you WOULDN'T see it) and still riding the pine as often as not
… even though on the field he’s been making the plays
===============
a step further: Pollard went from “Haley’s Doghouse” to Houston’s Penthouse … Haley decided that Pollard, like DJ, had no talent and couldn’t be coached up to his (Haley’s) standards … yet he goes to the Texans and for the last month has been an outright star for that team … the SAME GUY … but oh yeah, different HC
and while we’re at it: Mike Goff … enough said

It raises a great question
Do you keep a talented player, even if you fear that he has not bought into the new system? The risk is that this player will cause more harm than good. Their are different views on this. I would tend to be on the side that says cut him and let him go do well for other teams. The mental corruption of these players (Pollard, LJ, and “maybe” DJ) has a much more negative effect than there positive contributions on the field.
As a side note: it isn’t that hard to believe that a player just needs a new environment to succeed. Maybe it allows him to play with that edge again. Take Benson for example. If he was still on the Bears, I would garner that he would be equally useless as he was before on the team. The change of scenery lit a spark under him, and turned his mind around. This happens, and it appears to have happened with Pollard too.
It doesn’t make the move by the management to release him a bad move. They have to make moves for their team, based on their circumstances. I contend that Pollard would not be an impact player on the Chiefs right now. His move allowed him to get focused again and play up to his ability.
Thanks for posting! And I appreciate your outlook on these things; I just happen to disagree.

and I appreciate your views, even though I disagree ...
think about it: Pollard “not buying into a new system” … and what, pray tell, new system would that be? I mean, the name of the game is still f-o-o-t-b-a-l-l … our defenders try to tackle their guys and vice versa … the rules are the same as always … so maybe the issue isn’t “the guy who didn’t buy in” but rather “the guy building the fire” (ie, Haley)

the playcalling has been horrific, the style of "boot camp director" and demoting players on the depth chart with (apparantly) no explanation given ...
… starting arguably the worst RB in the league over and over and over again while others sit on the bench (that is NOT how you “motivate” adults) … changing both O-Line and Defensive schemes when he doesn’t have the players to fit those schemes (talk about trying to fit square pegs into round holes) …
no, between Haley and Pioli my overall grade is F and F …

Hope it changes sooner rather than later.
Benching DJ, Poor QB coaching, Ineffective playcalling, Poor game management, Benching Page when healthy are just a few reasons.

How do you quantify/explain "Poor QB Coaching?"
by jk86 on Nov 4, 2009 10:21 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
The rest of your points are pretty valid and true though...
But one more nitpick: “Benching Page when healthy?” I think there are several stories on the front page of this website that beg to differ with you. I think its becoming more and more clear that the reason he didn’t play was because he was nursing nagging injuries.

He wasn't on the injury report
therefore was not injured. Quote from Haley is below.

San Diego game, he was a healthy scratch. Haley even said it afterwards.

"Healthy" by Haley's definition or Page's?
Evidently Haley’s view of injuries might not be the same as some of the players’.

Cassel holds onto the ball too long.
Cassel and Brodie both fold when the game clock is winding down and they are having troubles with getting a play off.

Coach Todd Haley said safety Jarrad Page was healthy enough to play Sunday but was inactive instead…
…"I think he was healthy enough to play," Haley said. "I thought McGraw played really well the last couple of weeks when he’s been in there. It’s a roster deal there where we’re trying to juggle a lot of different spots."

I knew I was going to disapprove when I saw the stat that Chiefs are #1 in the NFL in rushing attempts up the middle. Where is this “offensive genious” that we were told Haley was?

He IS an offensive genius if he's given players and not absolute garbage.
He inherited an OFFENSIVE offense. :) Where are our weapons? D-Bowe? He’d be the #2 receiver on over half of NFL teams.

Haley has made himself the HC, the OC, the QB coach, and has had a big hand in coaching the WRs, yet we rank near dead last in almost every offensive statistic. When you make yourself the only person in charge, that leaves only one person to blame. He also likely had a big say in hiring Penderghast as the DC, and we rank near dead last in every defensive statistic. Being the worst at nearly every aspect of the game has to reflect on the HC. I mean we lost to the Raiders, for crying out loud!

Approve
The CHIEFS were bad the last 2 years before Haley got here. we cant expect him to fix a team as bad as we are in just a few games. look at the Detroit Lions. all the good draft picks they have got. it takes a little time to get a team as bad as we are back to winning.

Even if you want to argue that it takes seveal years to rebuild a team
Which I’ve argued against several times…what has Haley done to deserve your “approval” vote?
He’s in over his head…teams seem unprepared, don’t make adjustments, sloppy play…this all points to the coach.
I’m not a Haley hater at all…I just don’t see him getting a passing grade thusfar, but I’m giving him time to develop.

I'll argue til I'm dead that Herm had ONE year to rebuild this team (last year) ...
… and I’ll argue that Herm and Gailey, had they both been here THIS year (and a sideline game-day assistant for Herm) this team RIGHT NOW would be 3-4 or even 4-3
on top of bad playcalling, bad coaching, using bad players repeatedly, etc … the guy has alienated a good chunk of the team
oh, and let’s not forget Pollard, DJ and now we can add Page … amazing how some damned good players suddenly aren’t good anymore, and/or mysteriously have unexplained injuries and then just … disappear …

No way would we be 4-3
Herm would have went back to his offense with Croyle given the starting job yet again, we would still be running the tampon 2 and ST would still be bad.

Chris & Joel,
Would be curious on the numbers of disapprove, too. See how many “not sure”s have shifted.
by NJ Chiefs Fan on Nov 4, 2009 12:12 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
I'm a "Not Sure."
I have two issues with Coach Haley. The biggest issue I have with him is hiring a man who ran a system he didn’t believe in. If Coach wanted to run an Erhardt-Perkins style of offense, he should’ve hired an offensive coordinator with that mindset. Period.
Issue two: To our eyes, he seems to have trouble adapting to changing circumstances. I think this applies in a number of areas—he’s so determined to implement a Plan that he’s not able to roll with the punches. This goes for gameplanning, playcalling, player relationships…granted, these are my perceptions and they could be wrong, but still.
I like that Coach is holding everyone accountable, and that he has a specific vision for what he wants his teams to do in all phases of the game. He’s worked with a LOT of winning coaches, and seen some dramatic turnarounds (NYJ, ARI). Plus, the team doesn’t seem to have quit on him yet. But time will tell on the last one.
I HOPE that his desire to win leads him to become better at adapting to new situations, and that his background in personnel helps us to find players who fit “the right 53.”

Stubborness is not always an attribute - sometimes it's a vice
Haley said all the right things in the offseason, and I like his my-way-or-the-highway approach most of the time. However, the key to success in such a complicated job as NFL head coach is to make the best out of what you have, while you try to get peices that will make you even better later on. I don’t think Haley has any idea how to make the best out of what he has. I did NOT like Herm, but at least he understood that he and his coaching staff had to find ways to get production out of the sad roster they had – and they did try. I’ve seen no real effort to tweak the offense for more QB friendly roll-outs and boot-legs, we have run maybe two WR end-arounds all season, and we haven’t given any of our speedier RB’s a chance to find the edge and outrun people (running right up the middle, even with a big back like LJ, is not a good plan with this offensive line). All of us watching know these things… but Haley acts like he isn’t seeing reality or is just determined to make things work his way despite clear and convincing evidence that it ISN’T GOING TO WORK.
The trend today in the NFL is to hire young guys as head coaches — WHY? I’d like to see someone who has figured out the pitfalls and danger zones of coaching, perhaps at the college level, before handing that guy the controls to a multi-million dollar venture. Haley admits to being in a steep learning curve. Why should we fans have to put up with that and give away another season to “learning?”
