Awesome writeup on the possibilities of an uncapped season.
With the owners having opted out of the current Collective Bargaining Agreement set to expire in 2010, there could be some dramatic changes reshaping the NFL the way we know it. If a new CBA isn’t agreed upon by March of 2010, the NFL’s salary cap will vanish. Fans: Don’t fret; it may not be quite as bad as you imagine. Like most people, I would like to see the two sides get a deal ironed out, but here are a number of changes that will fall into place, preventing the deep pockets of Daniel Snyder and Jerry Jones buying themselves a Championship.
Players must accrue SIX seasons. Currently, players must accrue only four seasons before they can enter the market as an unrestricted free agent. So what is the change? Players will have to accrue six full seasons before having the ability to enter unrestricted free agency. For example, many players drafted in the second round or later in the 2006 draft are scheduled to be unrestricted free agents under a 2010 capped season, having signed four-year rookie deals. If a new CBA is not agreed upon and the 2010 season becomes uncapped, free agents-to-be such as Marcus McNeill, DeMeco Ryans, and Thomas Howard, will not have accrued six seasons and will therefore qualify as Restricted Free Agents. The Restricted Free Agents pool will consist of all players who have accrued three, four, or five years and have expiring contracts
Two tags. Under the current CBA, teams have one franchise tag OR one transition tag to apply on one of their free agents-to-be while paying them at an elite level. Under the conditions set forth, a 2010 uncapped year would lead to an extra transition tag being available. So, teams would be able to retain their top two unrestricted players with either two transition tags, or one franchise tag and one transition tag. This would make it all the more difficult for players to reach unrestricted free agency.
Restrictions on playoff teams. The eight teams that make the divisional playoffs will have restrictions placed upon them in unrestricted free agency. They will be able to only sign free agents in accordance to the number of players they lose. The four teams that lose in the Divisional rounds will have some additional flexibility. They may sign one player with a salary of $4.925 million or higher, as well as any number of free agents with a first year salary under $3.275 million and an increase of no more than 30 percent in the subsequent years. This will prevent the competitive teams from dominating the open market year in and year out.
There are obvious rules put in place to keep the NFL competitive even with an uncapped season and future. However, where there is money, there are always people finding loopholes; the NFL is no different. You can bet the rich owners will find ways to manipulate the rules, but the league should stay far more competitive than some are envisioning. The owners and the players will also have an incentive to agree upon a new deal because an uncapped future could be detrimental to members on both sides.

I also have a feeling...
that since Snyder has a rep for overpaying, that players would expect more coin from him.
Also Jerrah has really not done well with his free agent acquisitions too.

I am now fearing that the blind supposition that we saved money during this FA period
will result in our lack of activity, again, in next years uncapped FA period being explained away by the fanbase because there are too few FA resulting in overpaying for players that aren’t worth it.
Which is exactly the excuse used during this year’s FA.
Old stopgap overpriced LB’s = Check
Old stopgap overpriced (especially today) WRs = Check
Old stopgap overpriced Offensive Linemen = "That’s crazy! Why would we want to pay for that?!! That’s not the “way.”

If we can burn
$100 million on 2 defensive linemen, and spend the first 2 draft picks this year on DE’s, then there is absolutely no excuse for paying and drafting offensive linemen next year.
The justification this year by the masses for Jackson/Magee was Pioli builds from the trenches. Well, he better address the other side of the trench next year. Early and pricey.
If we can overpay in terms of salary for old LB’s and WR’s that suck, then there is absolutely no reason we can’t overpay for old OL’s that don’t suck as much as the ones we have now.
Erykah Badu, I have accepted your proposal. So, Mrs. DTR, let's get to consummating...you are on notice.

Agreed
We were calling for Offensive Linemen before the 2008 draft…and the only thing we have in 2 drafts and 2 FA to show for it is Branden Albert.
That was a glaring need even before Chan Gailey was hired, before we traded Jared Allen in 2008, before we went 2-14…
I am giving Pioli a pass if he chose to address the DL this year, but if that is the case, then, he must aggressively address the OL next year. If he doesn’t, no excuses can be made.

I agree, but...
I agree, but we shouldn’t draft a lineman high in the draft just for the sake of drafting a lineman.
This draft is prime example. Russell Okung is considered to be the consensus #1 LT prospect at this point (still a long way until the Draft), but he does not really impress me. I have seen him play and am not impressed with his technique at all and I saw him overextend himself on multiple occassions. I would much rather us go with a guy like Eric Berry or even Dez Bryant and get a guy like Ciron Black in the second round, who I think will be a great tackle in this league.
Keep in mind, we do have two second round picks so if someone falls who Pioli is really high on we may trade up into the late first to snag him. Also, Pioli has a history of getting steals on the OL in the later rounds. I also expect us to go after Logan Mankins hard in FA.

I agree...
But I also think that he has done a pretty good job considering when he took the job. For the most part I can’t really complain about any move he has made. Ive liked everyone, or at the very worst been neutral, well except trading away that last DT (name is slipping me).

Just a squirt bottle in which you put water with a packet of salt and flush through your nose. The first few times is weird but after you get the hang of it – it’s great.

Having Unlimited Funds Doesn't Necessarily Translate To Playoff Wins!
The boyz haven’t won a home playoff game since 1995! That’s 13 years and counting!
Here’s hoping that the Jerry Jones Dome stands empty on Playoff week 1 once again.
Love to hate the Boyz! Respect Jones as a business man, but Dallas is proof that throwing every $ available at players doesn’t equate to a SB ring.
I like the increase in years before restricted free agency, as it will keep the top players on teams, for the fans!

Very Good Write Up
What I find interesting is teh thing people don’t seem to be talking about. Everyone knows that Snyder and Jones will try to manipulate the system to create the Washington Superfriends and Dallas Legion of Doom. But, I think it will be fascinating to see what the Cheap owners will do. An uncapped year doesn’t just mean no ceiling. It also mean no floor.
Consider the case of Bill Bidwell. We all know that if you feed this guy a nickle he’ll crap out 5 pennies. In an uncapped year, he can dump as much salary as he wants without paying the cap minimum penalty. The possibility of having steady revenue from ticket sales and revenue sharing while being able to purge the roster of all high priced veterans he could make millions.
The guy had buyers remorse on Warner’s contract before the ink was dry. 3/4 of his LB corp has expiring contracts. 2/5 of his OL could be gone. Warner could be cut without repercussion. RFAs like Breaston could be lowballed on their tender offers and wind up moving to other teams for 4th-5th round picks.
We could easily be on the verge of fire sales in Arizona, Clevelend, Cinncinnatti, Jacksonville, Tennessee, St Louis, Buffalo, Carolina, San Diego, Seattle and Tampa. Anyplace that is againg or having trouble selling tickets is a candidate.
I don’t expect the market to be flooded with great talent. However, I do see a market that is loaded in the middle tier with a limited number of buyers snapping up the talent available. It’s a tremendous opportunity for a team like the Chiefs that has spent the past 3 years getting out from under bad contracts and aging players.
This is my signature line. It is full of awesome and win.
