Schefter: Chiefs Claim WR Chris Chambers Off Waivers

Adam Schefter of ESPN is reporting the Kansas City Chiefs have successfully claimed former San Diego Chargers WR Chris Chambers off waivers.

Chambers was released yesterday.  The deadline for waiver claims was at 3:00 PM (CST) today.

The Chiefs will now assume the remainder of Chambers' contract for the year - about $2.4 million.

Chambers was a second round pick by the Miami Dolphins in the 2001 draft.  He had six consistent years in Miami gaining from roughly 700-900 yards every year including one Pro Bowl appearance.

Days before the 2007 trading deadline, the Chargers acquired him in a trade for a second round pick.

The Chiefs had an open roster spot due to the Larry Johnson suspension until November 9th.

Thanks to TigerPride and kchayden for getting it out there.

More coming on this shortly...

What hands? You cant be talking about the same hands that has dropped a ton of passes this year and cant get open.

Oh Goody

Another washed-up WR to complement Bobby Engram.

Of course maybe this time it’ll be different. Because unlike Engram and Toomer, Chambers was never that good of a receiver.

Predictions for 2009

1. Todd Haley's going to struggle with managing his staff in his rookie year as head coach.
6. The Chiefs will go 7-9 in 2009, good for 2nd in the AFC West. Revision: We go 5-11 and finish behind Oakland.
7. Ryan Succop will not perform better in 2009 than Connor Barth did in 2008.
8. The Chiefs will have a bottom 10 defense this year.
9. RB will be a problem area this season on offense.

Man everyone cries cuz we suck then we make a move and its like we still bash our team

Im just happy we are giving people a chance. the one thing i have to say about chambers is his qb rivers has the worst accuracy he constantly make recievers battle for the ball he never puts passes on the money. Cassel puts balls on the money and leads his recievers. chambers would be a nice fit on third downs something we need.

ANd im not saying chambers is the best reciever in the world but like you said he is a pretty decent reciever that maybe can play a couple of years and needed a fresh start. im kinda excited to see what chambers brings as of now dbowe is ballin long is getting his reps in he could be a nice reciever wade his play speaks for it self. the guy balls. we are turning into a pretty nice recieving core

He's not what he once was, but........

I would argue that once he learns the offense he would make an average #2 WR and allow Wade to move to the slot where he belongs.

It's a good thing Pioli and Haley aren't running AP or a lot of you guys would of been traded or cut for cast offs from the Pats Pulpit.

by KCporkchop on Nov 3, 2009 3:48 PM CST reply actions

Yep...

I keep thinking that it would be awesome for Chiefs to have a Welkeresque type slot reciever. I realize Wade probably wont be great…but at least it may be an improvement.

Jackson

has been the #1 for a couple of years now.

Malcom Floyd is the reason he was cut. Floyd is huge, like jackson, and has really played well this year.

by Petey14 on Nov 3, 2009 4:15 PM CST up reply actions

No its because Malcom Floyd has become reliable and is breaking out

plus when they found out that Dobbins is out for a couple weeks they needed to make room for a LB

He looks like he has catcher’s mitts on his hands. He can’t catch a cold this year. He used to have great hands. Not sure what happened. Some crazy lab experiment gone wrong? Surprised we signed him for the price. Not an upgrade.

I remember Dawson to Taylor, Kenney to Carson, and Blackledge catching the snap in his facemask. Seen it all...

well

I can say I’ve watched my fair share over the years. Prior to Chambers going to San Diego I believed the kid was one of the best in the league, but on a bad team. He had one good season in San Diego but has been injured and lost in the WR shuffle for the past two years. This season in particular has been one of his worst as he can’t get separation and has a bad case of the drops.

by the way..i didn’t mean to attack you or anything. I just wouldn’t have gone as far as to say that he has the best hands in the league. I would say that he’s a smart WR, but losing his edge.

Long tries but he can't make the athletic catches other recievers can...

Sure there could be a place for him but it is an uphill battle. I like the guy, I really do so don’t take that the wrong way.

My take on Chambers is that maybe he can help mentor some younger receivers, who knows? Nothing to lose really.

Also remember guys, some of the best players on the team are the old ones, not the rookies.

I was meh on Vrabel but that guy really changed my mind in a hurry. Now hes the leader of the defense. Sure the defense sucks but hes the best we got and hes getting pretty old. Lets give Chambers a shot. If we could have got him at the beginning of the season you guys would be singing Pioli/Haley praises. This guy “could” contribute.

Bowe: 23 for 301 and 4 TD’s

Wade: 20 for 226 and 2 TD’s

Bradley: 15 for 177 and 1 TD’s

Engram: 5 for 61 and 0 TD’s

Copper: 2 for 11 and 0 TD’s (Special Teams Guy)

Long: 2 for 12 and 0 TD’s

Looking at those numbers I don’t think picking up a guy like Chambers can really hurt.

That's now how we evaluate roster moves, Patrick!

You can’t just say “he’s better than nothing, which is what we have.”

Because we aren’t paying our nothings $2.5M.

You are making no sense

You win the nonsense award. Congratulations.

THE TEAM loses 2.5 million dollars. If he sucks, then they cut him. Oh well. THE TEAM is 1-6. Trot a cheerleader out there at WR and see what she does, it doesn’t matter.

Cap

Aren’t we under the cap still? I believe we have to split up all the money between all players if we stay under it. So his 2.5 doesn’t change anything off the total.

I don't like this move.

What’s the point? Improve the team immediately? Does anybody think he will do that? At what cost?

This feels an awful lot like the Betancourt trade. Paying for other team’s trash is not a good strategy.

I could be totally wrong, though. Maybe he’s undervalued, there’s some correctable thing that Haley sees and can improve, or some aspect of leadership that will make this all worth it. I doubt it, though.

We have tons of cap space, and it’s not like this signing is taking away from money that could be spent elsewhere. Totally different than the Royals since there is obviously no cap in baseball, and any money spent is money that may not be available for new players.

I like this because we can use him the rest of the year, and if he plays well, sign him for next year. What is the harm in that? I’d like to see our offense improve THIS year, not just hope things happen

by Boots 58 on Nov 3, 2009 4:46 PM CST up reply actions

Yep

The money is going to go bye bye anyway if the Chiefs don’t use it. He appears to be an upgrade over Engram and possibly over Bradley. So why not do it?

Granted the hunt family loses $2.5 mil (as long as we are over the minimum), but I’d like to think they would like to see the Chiefs play better and possibly win a game or two more than earn some more cash

by Boots 58 on Nov 3, 2009 4:52 PM CST up reply actions

They aren't earning more cash

they are spending it in hopes of improving the team now rather than have their money get divided up betwen a bunch of other players which is what happens if they don’t meet the minimum.

This is nothing like the Betancourt trade

1) It’s not a trade. we didn’t give up a young prospect for a scrub.
2) The money we’re paying Chambers is money we had to spend. We’re under the salary minimum, so we take a chance on Chambers or whomever else we think might be able to help or we spread the money to the existing roster. Either way this money gets spent.
3) We’re not married to this guy. Betancourt has years left on his contract. Chambers does not.
4) this ain’t baseball.

This may or may not work out. chambers may be done or may just need a change of scenery. We’re 1-6. We have nothing to lose.

This is my signature line. It is full of awesome and win.

the point is he was good, maybe can be again; moss anyone?

plus he’s only 31; not that old and I’m not sure, but if we cut him later are we on the hook for his whole salary. Plus, “other team’s trash” a lot of people said that about O’cal, but i didn’t mind it then and I like it now. we’re also under the cap so who cares, who else is out there?

What bothers me most about this latest redesign

is that I’ve seen the look of this design before…3 years ago…on personal blogs.

It would be one thing if it were new and different, then I could say, “I might need a little time to get used to it,” but it’s not. It’s old and I wasn’t a fan of this style then, either.

Ok. Now I am really done. Sorry. :)

I like the move

I always liked him when he played for Miami. I know he’s dropped off some, but I can’t see how bringing him in hurts. He’s likely an upgrade over at least one of our receivers.

If not, he gets cut. No big deal.

May not hurt, but anyone thinking this just upgraded our WR's is

in for some huge disappointment. Unless he brought some stick ’em with him, he will not be much help.

I remember Dawson to Taylor, Kenney to Carson, and Blackledge catching the snap in his facemask. Seen it all...

Chambers also knows the Chargers offense

Last I checked, we play these guys twice a year. Chambers gives us the inside scoop, and he is head and shoulders above any other receiver on the current roster besides Bowe. Do I think he will make a big impact? Probably not right away, but I think he could work his way into the #2 position on the depth chart behind Bowe.

I just hope they give him a shot in game, unlike Engram and Toomer. I guess the difference is we are paying him 2.5 million and not the veteran minimum (1 million I think). Is Chambers a good downfield blocker? He may help in the running game as well.

Bobby Wade and Lance Long should battle it out for the slot receiver position. Wade has been playing solid, but he has reached his potential, unilke Lance Long. I will wait to get excited though. I was excited about this receiving corps heading into the season and I have been greatly disappointed.

by Nick Britt on Nov 3, 2009 5:26 PM CST up reply actions

Chambers....

I hope he keeps his head on straight….he has been around the block a few times. He knows the NFL, he knows defenses, he knows most all the AFC CB and DB…..he will be great at gameplanning for Bowe, Long, and Wade.

He has a lot to teach and I hope he can be a good teammate and help us get to where we are going. I hope he doesnt look at it like “Man, I just signed to a crappy 1-6 team…..who cares how good I do”….you know.

I think Pioli did a good job signing him. Even though we look like a lost cause he is still checking out the FA and Waiver Wire for a good upgrade…..thats how you get better.

Wow that is a significant difference.

Chambers was at one time a top teir WR with Miami. I don’t really think he was ever a real problem. Boston was a beast for a couple of years before Roids finished him off. I know you can see the difference. One looks like a WR one looks like he could play DE in our new 3-4.

I love how we...

don’t keep Lelie, who had potential and was a real down field threat, and we could have had for next to nothing financially, to signing a WR on the downswing who hasn’t done crap this season all while assuming the 2.4 million dollar salary that SD owes him?

Pure Genius.

by 5280ChiefsFan on Nov 3, 2009 7:40 PM CST reply actions   1 recs

No one else has signed Lelie....

either. That has to say something. Has everyone forgotten who our GM is and where he came from? I f you go back, you will hear many of the same things that we are saying about Chambers being said about Randy Moss, Corey Dillon, Rodney Harrison, and I could go on. Now Im not saying that Chambers is going to be Moss in New England, but the Patriots are known for taking guys that we all call washed up and getting Pro Bowls out of them. A change of scenery could do all of the good in the world. And I agree with several other posters…….What do we have to lose?

I dont know bout you guys but I wanna see what this looks like.

Chambers, Wade, Bowe, Long, Bradley, Engram…whatever you like the most…If we had an O-line, I think we could be a force, but let’s see as the season comes to a close.

Bowe and Wade FTW.

probably get ripped for sayin this, but

I think our line might come together soon. We obviously don’t mind bringin guys in, so my guess is haley see’s something with our line and is just waiting for them to figure out the scheme or “who to block”.

by E.C. on Nov 3, 2009 8:15 PM CST up reply actions

I'm with you guys...

I think there is plenty of potential in the WR corps, AND on the OL

they just have to start executing. period.

I was thinking that, watching New Orleans last night… I bet you can’t name too many of their OL… and if most of their WR were on a different team, you’d never have heard of them… but they EXECUTE their plays with precision, as if they’ve practiced them a million times, and it’s an old habit… they dont’ have to think about it anymore

That’s the level KC needs to be operating on… take the guys they have, or guys that fit the roles they need… and get them all on the same page, so they can just act, and run the plays without thinking or stumbling through them.

our oline is really bad we cannot pick up a blitz for our life

which brings me back to lj who is the worst blocker on the team out of the back field . even haley himself says charles is the better blocker and he will be starting soon soo maybe we can actually make some plays now with charles out of the back field and him pickin up blocks

FOUR F'S FIND UM FEEL UM FUGUM FORGET UM.

by sexassassin on Nov 4, 2009 12:25 AM CST up reply actions

this guy has proven

that he can play in this league. He is just being overlooked by a team that has multiple threats aat WR….The Chiefs need another threat on the other side of Bowe. If anybody can say with a straight face that Engram is a better WR than Chris Chambers right now, then the dont know much about football. Chambers has had his struggles this yr but maybe a change of scenery is what he needs. We have the money to spend, and if he works out he is young enough to stick around for a few more yrs til we groom another good WR to take his place. Engram will not be back after this yr, after we cut him , he will retire. The dude is 36yrs oldnow…Chambers thought that being cut was for personal reasons alos, so I think he comes in with a chip on his shoulder..especially against the Chargers twice a yr…..my two cents.

by KCinAZ on Nov 3, 2009 10:09 PM CST reply actions

i like the pick up...

He has played like a number 1 wr a few years but obviously is a GREAT #2. His skill set should complement Bowe and give Cassel another target for those 3rd down conversions. Now if we could get some help on the o-line we could be in good shape to at least go 500 the rest of the season. (Just the 2nd half obviously, not only lose 2 games…)

by xfatdannx on Nov 3, 2009 10:24 PM CST reply actions

It would be great

if he can live up to his potential and be a solid #2. At 31 he should have 2 to 3 solid years left and that would make me happy because we could concentrate on the 80 other holes we have in this draft.
