But here is where it gets cloudy. What if both McGraw and Page are unable to play on Sunday? Who plays free safety? There is Ricky Price from the practice squad and that’s about it, unless either Mike Brown or Dajuan Morgan can move over from their strong safety post. If McGraw can play, expect the Chiefs to save a roster spot and use CB Maurice Leggett to fill in as the back-up/emergency free safety. Leggett was taking reps at free safety yesterday in practice, alongside Price.

I'm going to swallow my pride and say
Damn, getting rid of Bernard Pollard was a MISTAKE! I know he’s a SS and we’re out two FS but I know Brown has played both positions and having him here for depth would be nice right now. Let’s just hope Edwards can stay healthy * knocks on wood *

unless you're the GM
you have no pride to swallow in letting him go.

He's probably 'fessin' up for comments he made earlier.
jonnyu ain’t afraid to voice his opinion, nor is he one to try to wallpaper over his mistakes.
No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.

I have a pollard jersey
but even I cant say that keeping pollard was the best move, not stoked that we got nothing for him, but honestly he will put up some numbers, and also hidden in those numbers are his missed tackles, and blown assignments….
honestly I think there is no reason to be upset over multiple injuries at a position, especially in a year when we are working on the basics…anyone who thinks we keep more than 20 of these players beyond 2010 is nuts.

Safety is rarely picked that high...
but this is all the more reason to have a top-notch versatile, every-down safety. We have 4 guys labeled safety on the roster.

Nice link. So, Eric Berry is a junior?
Guess I wasn’t payin’ attention. I can see Mays being a guy Gunther Cunningham would want to play LB. Nice piece of the article mentioning (reminding me of) his ability to man-up an NFL TE. This is a hole on MANY NFL defenses, and there’s a plethora of TEs in the league to exploit that. Point in Mays’ favor.
Still, I want DBs who can do a convincing job 1-on-1 on WRs, first and foremost. I want to be able to jam and blitz with my up-DB, confident that the guy behind him can use the jam to HIS advantage and just flat take over. I want to be able to single-up that DB in press and present the QB with a 30%-or-less proposition in so doing, rather than the 80% proposition it seems to be, nowadays.
No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.

Can someone take a minute and define the role difference
between a Free Safety and a Strong Safety?
Winning begins with Attitude - Haley and Pioli will be winners in KC!
I'll forever be a Chiefs fan! Only God himself could take that away from me, but when I get to my great reward, I'll rejoin two bigger fans, my Mom and Dad.

well, simply put
the free safety is generally free, while the strong safety is more often than not, strong.

free safety
usually your passing down safety, strong safety is usually your rushing down safety.

Lanier
Free safety is ususally gonna line up the deepest (15 yards or so) and his primary role is defending the pass (middle third or deep half) in most zone coverages.
Strong safety is usually lined up closer to the line of scrimmage (sometimes in LB territory) and gonna handle more run support. They’re also strong side to help cover the tight end at times.
Your free safeties are gonna be quicker and lighter becuase they have so much ground to cover, and if the screw up it’s gonna be noticable……6 points noticable

We Will kick at least 4 Teams Asses in 09
And Succop will be the Key in two of them.

a new D takes TWO YEARS to gel and work...those expecting a 8 game turnaround...cmon...we dont even have the players yet for a 2 year gel
by SDChief on Nov 3, 2009 11:37 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
2 years?
Explain Denver’s Defensive Turnaround then.
Last year they were 29th in total defense, this year they are #1.

Not debating that.
The poster claimed it took 2 years to get a new Defense to gel. I gave a recent example stating it didn’t.
We changed to the 3-4 and still suck.

They have different players
that are perhaps better suited for the 3-4 starting off than the Chiefs. They got B.Dawkins, the Chiefs got Mike Brown.
Looking at the whole picture, I wouldn’t expect the Chiefs defense to be better than the Bronco’s one bit. And I wouldn’t expect their defense to finish #1, top 5 would even be a stretch I think.

Also depends on how you chose to quantify those numbers
By points allowed, Colts have the best defense with the fewest points allowed, which to me is more quantifiable than yards allowed/game… But Denver is a not too distant #2 when ranked that way.
anywho, I’m just playing devils advocate.

to be devils advocate to the devils advocate
the defense doesn’t play in isolation. One has to grudgingly accept that Denver’s offense isn’t too bad and wasn’t too bad last year either. If the offense is on the field more than the defense, then the D stays fresher. Maybe it’s only a matter of a few minutes difference from last year i don’t know.

Champ was struggling with injuries in '08.
He’s been healthier this season.
Also they added the #3 (or #2?) corner in the ’09 draft.
Also, they added Brian Dawkins.
Their secondary has allowed them extra-hats-in-the-box-without-penalty. Overall, a better-managed offseason than KC managed. But NONE of us were thinking we needed an upgrade at S in the offseason. KC’s probably more stout in the middle.
Baltimore showed that a team that can pass very very well can eventually start running at Denver’s undermanned d-line. Denver’s living and dying by the health of their secondary this season. They’re one hard hit by (on) Champ from becoming something pretty ordinary, imo.
No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.

I kinda like Leggett at FS, actually.
He’s a decent hitter, and might make the defensive formations tougher to parse for opposing QBs.

Fact, all our corners are decent hitters.
Put the best man coverage guys (whatever their label) in tight and let the other guys freewheel. They’re all pretty good blitzers, except maybe Morgan, who seems to struggle getting off blocks.
