Free Agents to Watch This Offseason

I haven't posted in a while, so I thought I'd throw together a list of players with expiring contracts that may be of interest to the Chiefs.  A couple of things to keep in mind with the possibility of an uncapped year.

  • Some big names will be cut so that teams can take the financial hit during the uncapped year.  No way of knowing who these players will be, but the FA pool will be deep as a result.
  • Some teams will overpay for talent on short term contracts.  (Redskins and Cowboys etc)
  • Some players will look for huge one year contracts which has never happened before.
  • Some teams will look to drop salary and run low payroll to turn a profit.  (Cardinals and Bengals etc)
  • Teams that treat this like a capped year will be the long term winners.  (Steelers and Colts etc)

So here are players I think we may look at, listed by position:

QB

Chad Pennington.  Parcells connection to provide mentorship to Cassel.

Kellen Clemens.  Could push Brody for backup job.

Prediction:  None signed.  We'll look to provide competition for Brody via the draft or another team's camp cuts.

RB

Kevin Faulk.  Pioli favorite who can make more money in KC than he can in NE.

Le’Ron McClain.  A versitile HB/FB who could fill role as lead blocker/GL back or win starting HB job.

Darren Sproles.  Hometown boy that is immediate fix to special teams problems and can be the lead back for a RB by committee.  I can’t picture SD being able to afford him again.  He will look for an opportunity to be the man somewhere.

Lendale White.  Whether it’s next week or next year, LJ is gone.  We’ll add a power back from somewhere and White is a likely candidate.

Ricky Williams.  With his production in Miami, he’ll look for an opportunity to be the feature back again.  With the Parcells connection and our cap space, this may be our guy.

Prediction:  Run at Sproles fails and we sign Williams.

WR

Steve Breaston.  Haley guy with a ton of talent.  Despite all the talk of Boldin to KC, I think this signing is way more plausible.

Chris Chambers.  This guy has all the talent in the world, but for some reason he has never really exploded on the.  I could see Haley trying to finally pull that talent out of him.

Kevin Walter.  Will likely look to get out from under Andre Johnson’s shadow in Houston.

Prediction:  Breaston.

TE

Anthony Fasano.  Very versitile guy with Parcells connection.

Tony Scheffler.  Talented guy has been largely overlooked in Denver.  I just have a feeling this guy will be on the move.

Ben Watson.  Will anyone be surprised with the signing of a former Patriot?

Prediction:  Watson.

OL

Chad Clifton.  Solid and versitile.

Mike Gandy.  Haley connection has struggled at LT.  He’d be an outstanding RT for us.

Daryn Colledge.  Talented Packer can play guard or tackle.

Logan Mankins.  Solid guard is a Patriot FA.  Need I say more?

Prediction:  Mankins and Gandy.

DL

Vince Wilfork.  Obviously the prize of the FA pool.

Richard Seymore.  He won’t be a Raider again and the Patriots can’t afford him.

Casey Hampton.  Plays NT for the best 34 in the league.  Not spectacular, but you can’t argue with success.  He has his rings and wants his payday.

Ryan Pickett.  The drafting of BJ Raji has made this very solid NT expendable.

Prediction:  We make a splash with Hampton.

 LB

Karlos Dansby.  Haley and Co. love him.  The Cardinals will hate to pay him.  Feels like a no-braier.

Scott Fujita.  This is my post, so I’ll allow myself this one little bit of wishful thinking.  We never shoulda let him walk and I want him back in Red and Gold.

Kieth Bulluck.  The Titans are VERY likely to rebuild a younger front 7.  They’ll let Bulluck walk and he may just walk to KC.  Exactly the type of veteran LB that Pioli loves.

Matt Roth.  Versilite player with Parcells connection.

Prediction:  Dansby and Roth.

CB:

Frankly, the CB crop is a sorry lot.  I don’t see anyone that really fits.  We’ll continue to try and develop Carr and Washington in hopes of finding a compliment to Flowers.

Prediction:  None signed.

S

Dawan Landry.  The Ravens will have a tough time paying him.  We won’t.

Prediction:  None signed.  I think we’ll address S via the draft.

I am aware of the cap

Actually, none of the guys I actually predict we will sign are in line for a huge payday. Wilfork and Sproles will get paid (and I don’t think we’ll get them) Mankins is a guard. He’ll take some money, but not a budget breaker. Same goes for Hampton. Breaston and Dansby are probably the most expensive and with our cap room we can easily afford both.

Brown?

Isn’t Ricky Williams signed through next season and Brown is a FA? I like Jerious Norwood from ATL.

Bowe's numbers regress due to lack of decent QB play.

Mankins and Wilford or Hampton...

That’d be a NICE haul.

Then, the draft gets really interesting.
With 2 major holes filled… the Chiefs are free to grab BPA, even more than they already would have…

I’d still want Berry and a Center, and an OLB like Norwood…
but the rest would be up for grabs

* "I doubt anyone will miss Connor Barth except UCrawford"
* the LB corps may become the biggest strength of the Chiefs in 2009

None of the big $ guys

My prediction based upon what has happened thus far is the team stays away from the big $ players. But I would not be surprised if the team did take a shot at Sproles and Breaston. Pioli will take a shot at Mankins and Roth probably only ending up with Roth. Dansby they won’t go after as a play making LB will be sought via the draft. Possession wide out will be dealt with via the draft with the team taking Shipley, UT, or Meyer, KU. RB will be determined by the play of Kolby Smith. If he performs well the remainder of the season then the team will only consider Kevin Faulk.

by chief66 on Nov 3, 2009 12:53 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

I feel that we already have pass catching RB

so a stronger RB will be needed, McCLain or White fill that nicely.

No need to go draft on WR when great FA like Walter and Breaston are available

Definitely make a run at Willfork, no way on Seymour, Haley/Piolo have the DE already

I see the team building the OLine thru the draft as well as getting S & LB’s in the draft.

by Your_Moms_Boyfriend on Nov 3, 2009 1:03 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

You sold me on Faulk

Any of those FA’s would be nice. The team will probably take a run at Breaston, but probably not Walter. He would be either a 1 or 2 rec. and they can take a possession rec. to compete with Long and have as back-ups Bradley and the draft pick. Wilfork and Hampton are too expensive and DL is not a top priority at this time given that Breaston will cost some big $. Mankins is a long shot, but guards are typically not all that expensive so it is plausible the team trys to get him. This allows them to move Niswanger to guard, draft a center and another guard in Round 2. Roth is another inexpensive FA who could help at LB and allow the team to use the 1st round pick on an impact LB who can rush the passer. Safeties, RB’s and even a NT can be had in late rounds of the draft. Berry and Mayes would be nice, but pass rusher is more of a priority. I just dont expect the team to go after anyone on this list other than Breaston, Mankins and Roth. If they did go after Dansby and get him they may draft Gresham TE OU in the first round. Depending on the severity of his injury this is a once in lifetime TE who can block and catch and can mow over LBs, CB’s and safeties.

OK with the free angency stuff and draft stuff

We used last draft to get a couple bricks to lay down on defense Tjack and we got a couple other on D. this next offseason isnt gonna be much different we are gonna get the “not so sexy” picks of players so we can lay foundation so be able to grab Impact stars On both sides of the ball
IF we dont use both our 2nd rounders on OLINE this draft will fail WE NEED to get BIG guys having one or two injurys to your line and your scraping for replacements is not the write answer GO GET ALL THE OLINE YOU CAN PIOLI

Friends make fierce competitors. I am confident that Pioli wants to beat Papa and the Hoddie more than anyone else. It’s braggin rights at the 4th of July picnic. And if that means stealing away Mankins then so be it. Whether he’ll be able to get it done is a different story…

Really would love to see Mankins & WIlfork

I’m hoping that Pioli held back on the FA signings this season so he has more money to go after guys next offseason. I’ve been as big a Pioli supporter as anyone so far, but I’ll be disappointed (to say the least) if he isn’t able to pull in a few established starters to fill some big holes in conjunction with the ‘10 draft class. To me the key is bringing in Wilfork…in fact I expect it to be done if NE doesn’t franchise him. I assume they drafted Ron Brace with the expectation of letting Wilfork walk after this offseason.

Building through the draft IS the best way to build a team, but this team has too many holes to go that route exclusively. We need to get at least one very good, established, NFL guard and a NT through FA. I don’t want this team to use a top-5 pick on Mt. Cody…a guy who couldn’t handle his weight until his senior season (seems like a lazy player to me, just doing what he has to for the Draft).

If we can land Wilfork & Mankins we could use our #1 pick on Berry/Mays, #2 on the best WR/RB/LB that falls to the early 2nd round, and use the Falcons #2 on a good center prospect. This would be a good setup for next year, IMO.

by jmcgoblue on Nov 3, 2009 3:48 PM CST reply actions   1 recs

Pioli...

he may have been waiting to truly see what he had here in KC… with all the changes, it had to take the better part of this year to evaluate players.

I think he’ll make some moves this offseason, and that this draft will be a BIG one…

my roommate is a huge steelers fan

and says that casey hampton will be a steeler for life. he loves the team and the city too much and they love him even more so he’s not going anywhere. apparently he’s said on several occasions that he’d gladly pass on a big contract to be a steeler for the rest of his career. he could be full of it but i tend to think he’ll be a steeler again next year

by airfly on Nov 3, 2009 5:07 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

The fan perspective is great

The player perspective is:

Ed Bouchette, of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, reports Pittsburgh Steelers DL Casey Hampton, who is entering the final year of his contract, senses 2009 may be his last season with the team. “Yeah, it’s coming down to that,” Hampton said. “If they don’t do contracts during the season, then that’ll make me a free agent. If I get to free agency, man, I mean everybody knows what it is. So I don’t need to say something about that. If they let me get to free agency, everybody knows what it’s going to be, so there’s no need to even talk about it.”

I like the LeRon Mclain idea among others.

Hes a young guy and a bruiser. I get the feeling he liked playing RB last year more than he likes playing FB this year. He seems like a guy that genuinely fights for the hard yard and would be grateful to be back at RB… especially with Mankins in front of him. That would save us the hassel of drafting a new RB in the top half of the draft to replace LJ

A man who says he can, and a man who says he can't are both right. Which one are you?

by Bashman on Nov 3, 2009 6:48 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

I have a huge mancrush on McClain

I don’t think we’ll wind up signing him mostly because I’m not sure he really fits what Haley would like to do with the O. I hope I’m wrong.

I'd love to get McClain!

I watched him run all over Denver when he actually got the ball.. If he could lose 25 pounds he could be a beast with some speed.. A “jones drew kinda guy” Big legs.. Runs hard.. And runs through people instead of around.. He’s 6 foot 260 right now..Big big boy

by Kcbiggyblue on Nov 3, 2009 6:57 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Nah,

leave him with the weight, he plays well with it. He’s a faster Brandon Jacobs imo. I had in fantasy football last year and he did well. Just think McClain and Charles, some Smith mixed in it’d be like the Saints with Thomas, Bush and Bell.

When deep space exploration ramps up, it'll be the corporations that name everything, the IBM Stellar Sphere, the Microsoft Galaxy, Planet Starbucks.

I'd be fine with 9-7 or 10-6 and competiting for the divsion title

Good Post

My thoughts on it.

QB: I could see us bringing in Pennington as a 2nd or 3rd string backup (sort of…depending on how well he recovers from shoulder surgery).

RB: Ricky Williams would be a horrible signing for what he’ll likely get. He’s old and he’s more likely to get worse than better. Sproles will not be leaving SD…they’ll cut Tomlinson this offseason and he’ll take over as primary back (or close to it). LenDale White might actually be worth a gamble as I think he’ll come cheaply so he’s a decent “buy low” prospect (even considering his issues).

WR: I love Breaston, but the Cards control his rights (RFA) and he’s going to be replacing Boldin sooner rather than later. Walter’s an injury guy…no thanks.

TE: Scheffler or Fasano would be excellent additions, so long as we can acquire them without giving up draft picks.

OL: Mankins would be a good pickup. Clifton’s been terrible this year (age, injury) and we don’t want any of those other guys.

DL: Hampton or Wilfork would be okay but I don’t think they’re saviors. The Raiders will likely franchise Seymour…he’s the only FA they’ve got this year who is worth the tag.

LB: Meh. Dansby’s okay I guess, but overrated IMO.

CB: Agreed…nothing special out there.

S: Agreed…I like Landry and he’d be a good pickup, unless we draft Taylor Mays or Eric Berry (which I would love).

Predictions for 2009

1. Todd Haley's going to struggle with managing his staff in his rookie year as head coach.
6. The Chiefs will go 7-9 in 2009, good for 2nd in the AFC West. Revision: We go 5-11 and finish behind Oakland.
7. Ryan Succop will not perform better in 2009 than Connor Barth did in 2008.
8. The Chiefs will have a bottom 10 defense this year.
9. RB will be a problem area this season on offense.

by UCrawford on Nov 3, 2009 8:13 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Hmmm.

I’d lean against White, but he IS a powerful back who can break tackles, and the Titans’ limitations MAY have him undervalued. Nice catch, UC.

I like Breaston, also, but I kinda have this “guy who played next to him was great…” thing goin’ on, like the aging Brett Perriman we picked up a few years back. We also did that with Derrick Alexander, speculating that he needed to be the feature WR to really come into his own, when it was the existence of another feature receiver that made him impress us so much as the #2, when Carl (hence we KC fans) were sizin’ up the FA market.

Nothing to really call you out on wrt Breaston, other than my prejudice-born-of-experience.

No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.

Hey UC

Couple of things:

- I was wrong on Williams anyway. Signed a contract extension for next year.
- Breaston is an RFA, but I think in an uncapped year, Bidwell will lowball him with no better than a 3rd round tender then refuse to match and sign. If he’s available for a 3rd or less, I think he winds up in Red and Gold.
- Scheffler and Fasano are both UFAs so no compensation required.
- Clifton. I don’t want him either, but I think we’ll look at him.
- Hampton/Wilfork. I do think Wilfork would be a gigantic upgrade, but don’t think he’ll seriously consider KC. I don’t consider Hampton a savior either. He’s 32 and on the decline, but having an experienced guy in the between Dorsey and Jackson could work very well for a couple of years and buy us time to address NT in future drafts.
- Dansby. I don’t love him either. But, I think Clancy and Haley do. He does operate well in space so could be a nice pickup if the price is right.

This is my signature line. It is full of awesome and win.

by chrisclark_dfw on Nov 3, 2009 9:17 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

I don't think anyone thinks we will sign all of these guys..

It’ll be damn near impossible to sign 2 or 3 of them with how bad this team is right now.. We will have to flash alot of money and we all know clark isn’t accustomed to do so.. I expect to sign 3 big names at most.. Rest throughout the draft.. We have to find quality players in the later rounds.. Something none of the recent management has been able to do…

by Kcbiggyblue on Nov 3, 2009 10:25 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I should have been more clear

The predictions aren’t that I think we will sign all 8. (9 actually counting Sproles) It’s that they are the players I believe we will try to sign. We won’t be the only team trying to sign these players and we surely won’t get them all. If I had to pick the most likely it would be Dansby, Mankins and Breaston. (if I am right about his tender status)

This is my signature line. It is full of awesome and win.

I knew that..

I was talking about the guy above me.. And i would like Dansby, McClain/White, Breaston and Mankins also.. We need a bruiser to go along with lil charles..

lendale white is my favorite

he made reggie look better than he was, he made johnson look better than he was (johnson is still good on his own but he looked better when he and white were a cooperative team) and i think he’d make charles or kolby smith look good as well. i would LOVE this pick up

nobody we sign at qb

will be competing with Croyle…they’ll be replacing Croyle, as he signed a one-year contract this year as a restricted free agent. If he’s smart, he’ll leave and go somewhere who offers him a chance to compete for the starting spot.

Oh yea, and the real prize of the 2010 free agency class will be defensive end Julius Peppers. He turns 30 in January so he still has at least 3 more years at an elite level before his production begins to drop off.
