State of the Chiefs???

First and foremost, whuddup AP? Been a long time since I was able to post a comment!! Finally got internet here in Afghanistan and I have NO CLUE what is up woth our beloved Chiefs. I get snippets of news on occasion, and I see we have won only one game. I have no way to speculate what the hell is going on, but my gut tells me there just isn't enough talent. Am I right or is Haley not cut out to be a HC? Looking on-line at stats we seem to be bottom dwellers in both offense and defense. Fill me in AP, what's the problem with KC and is is it short term, long term, chronic or fixeable?? Hopefully it is a short term effect of gutting a franchise and virtually starting from scratch. Anyway, not much time today, 4:45 p.m. here, just wanted to see what was up and say hello. The weather is great here right now.......mountains everywhere.......to bad I am not on vacation!!!!

Peace AP!!

Chiefs

Good to see you post Burk. Thanks for your service. Ahh the Chiefs. Young coach, young team with holes at safety, O-line, and wide reciever among others. Defense looks some better especially against the run IMHO. The offense is atrocious especially the line. Matt Cassel should get hazard pay. No rushing TD’s LJ looks finished and can’t keep his mouth shut. Again all just my opinion. I pray for you and all the other brothers in arms . Keep safe.

fellow veteran here.

of the Saudi war…thank you brother for your service.

Right now we ARE bottom dwellers in all categories both offensively and defensively for a reason. We suck. We have a huge lack of talent.
I would actually have to credit Haley with getting this lack of talent rag tag group to play above their skill set. Is it fixable? Of course. It’s always fixable.

If you go off resume’s, we have the best GM (next to Atlanta) in the business. So your going to get lots of opinions on this subject.

The real truth is that nobody knows. We DON’T know. Their very secretive in a NE Patriots kinda way. It’s different. We’re used to our leadership here being very open with us fans, but we’re also used to losing so there you go.

We have no idea what the “plan” or “process” is here in KC because not much is being said either way. We won’t really know until next year after the draft and FA.

Secondly, I think you’ll find that the GENERAL consensus is that even our coaching staff is littered with a lack of heavy hitters with great talent. Pendergast is not getting the job done and I think MOST KC fans here would love to see him replaced with a dynamic defensive genius next year.

In the end, it’s impossible to know. I’m sure if they had a plan, they weren’t able to engage it this year just simply due to the fact that they ran out of time and available staff.

I think again MOST AP’ers agree that they had to hire who they hired as a coaching staff simply because there was no one else out there to get.

Time will tell, Next year should bring a lot to light for us. Either way. It may or may not bring good things next year. I think we all expected to see a lot more improvement under Pioli/Haley this year than we’ve been shown thus far.
But again, they both got hired late in the offseason IMO and didn’t have a lot of options available.

Hang in there, get out of Afghanistan alive and well and when you get home, we’ll go to see our Chiefs at the Superbowl together. GO CHIEFS!!

Good to hear from you Burk

Even though this has been a tough year as far as our record shows, I believe we are not far away from turning things around. Here are some things that are slowing us down this year:

1. Haley might be in over his head after overhauling the entire offense a couple weeks from the start of the season. He’s making some mistakes as a head coach and playcaller, but it’s to be expected in his first year.

2. O-Line was switched to a zone blocking scheme completely confusing a group that is short on talent.

3. Cassel running for his life most of the time can’t make the progressions and stretch the field to keep defenses on their heels.

4. LJ is just being LJ……….just older and slower now which is not good considering what’s going on with O-Line (above)

5. TE situation is looking real bad, these guys can’t block They can’t block and none are receiving threat that defenses have to account for.

6. LB core is a hodgepodge (finally get to use that word!). Vrabel is a good onfield coach, just a step slower now. We don’t have great coverage here so opposing tight ends roam free. Mays and Belcher have flashed at times. DJ is riding the bench for unknown reason. Hali is a pleasant suprise for what he’s done in his position change.
With a good draft next year and some upgrades at a few positions (S,OL,NT,WR,TE) we will be more competitive then many people realize.

7. Safeties can’t tackle or cover so we’re screwed here…

8. WR is a carousel with guys getting signed, dropped, and moved around.

9. Return game has been real weak…..

I’m realistic in that this year has been horrible to sit through, but I have hope that things are gonna pick up especially after we get some young talent in and our coaches get their schemes fully implemented. We’re just gonna have to be patient for now…….

Take care and stay safe man.

Ditto on "Welcome Back"
  1. The “in over his head” is likely with regard to acquiring and training OL. I think the takeover on OC was probably in reaction to prior talent evaluation being poor. In and of itself, I don’t see it as a huge problem. The problem might just be the base skill level in talent eval, right along.
  2. Zone blocking has ME confused. All the early talk about drive-blocking scheme and players, all the talk about Goff finding a “good fit” because he was NOT a zone blocker, like Norv wanted, and then going zone blocking? You kiddin’ me?
  3. Would add to that an apparent failure-to-read-or-communicate in on-the-fly situations, where the WR and QB need to see the same thing and know what to expect from one another.
  4. Don’t think LJ is slower. I think he’s the same back as before (in all respects), and is in a bad situation (scheme/surrounding talent) for his skill set.
  5. TE does look bad. But keeps changing week-to-week, looking for an answer.
  6. DJ is probably riding the bench because of week-to-week nicks and bruises, same as most of the offseason (IIRC). This was supposed to be a system that let aggressive LBs flourish, but D-Line hasn’t set the LBs (and DBs) up as well as we were hoping, causing LBs to grade lower than they otherwise might (imo).
  7. Safeties tackle OK. Just have problems getting to the spot on time, which I suppose IS a precondition to good tackling. Biggest prob w/ safeties (and corners) is lack of coverage skills (fast+quick+redirect-routes-to-advantage – these things ain’t happenin’ very often). See above.
  8. WR merry-go-round. Chambers is the latest (and biggest) signing.
  9. Yes, weak return game.

No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.

Good to read you Burkhart

I’d say as of this season Haley isn’t cut out to be a HC. Whether or not he wil be is an entirely different question. We’re so bad this year because we’ve blown this puppy up again and are completely rebuilding from the ground up. We’re essentially repeating what Herm did only years ago but this time with a different architect and blueprints. I think maybe a lot of people, or least just myself, expected Pioli to come in and pickup right where Edwards left off with the youth movement but in actuality Pioli wanted nothing of it or its leftovers. It’s going to be another process that will take another 3-4 years which is why they shipped Gonzalez off. Good on them but for the fans its gonna be another long ride.

All the best

What we can't see

I think something that gets lost too often are the things that go on during practice, team meetings, film sessions, etc… It’s going to be a process to get the right guys (53) learning the RIGHT WAYS to do things. If that means bringing in veterans to teach work ethic and the correct habits then it is what it is. We’ve played 7 games against some pretty good teams. You can’t fix everything overnight but everyone is quick to judge and persecute without giving them a chance to build something.

I think the frustration is mounting

because we were in rebuild mode for 2 years with Herm, then we get a new regime, and are back to rebuilding once again……hopefully after this last overhaul we will be able to reap the benefits for a long time to come.
