The Chiefs turned the ball over four times. Quarterback Matt Cassel dropped a pick-6 fumble into the gut of a blitzing San Diego defensive back. Running back Jamaal Charles coughed up a fumble when the game was still close. Cassel tossed an interception. There’s another turnover that I can’t remember at the moment. Oh, that’s right. Center Rudy Niswanger zinged a shotgun snap over the head of Cassel....Let’s deal with the obvious. The Chiefs are not as bad as they looked on Sunday. San Diego is not 29 points better than the Chiefs. The Chiefs came out feeling a touch too good about themselves, a little loosey-goosey, and the Chargers slapped them into reality.

He gets even more reasonable later in the article...

What a bad weekend...
we get stomped by the Bults and 2.7 gets over 100 yards (against the Browns mind you…but all the damned announcers are claiming “he’s back” which just sucks to hear).

Sun shines on a dogs ass every now and again.
This is getting me excited for when we play the Browns, I can’t wait to see Jamaal shred them. And its going to make the Larry fall that much more glorious when he goes back to sucking and Cedric is back to getting carries.

Never understand the Whitlock hate
then again, some people hate Bill Simmons as well, so I don’t know
Im not a fan of Whitlock...
But he is good at his job, he has always struck me as a rabble rouser. He often seems to be some what of a shock writer, just trying to stir the coup, which is fine, but rarely does he have positive things to say, to balance it a little.

BS is horseshit...
How that smug douche can get away with being a “National” Boston writer is beyond us. Whitlock at least writes with conviction in the relative milieu of a local reporter who occasionally gets elevated to the national level for being quixotically controversial. Yes, Whitlock is hacky sometimes, and slips into the “Fire this @#&^($*!” journalism pretty easily. But Simmons is just the level of saccharine “sports guy” asshattery that won’t actually be controversial while being “cheeky.” He’s the perfect medium for that guy in college that watched way too much ESPN and wasn’t funny per se, but could occasionally pull a mean spirited zinger. His target audience refuses to wear their fitted caps forward ever. And you know for once it’d be nice to read a football column without having first seen the fucking Celtics game the night before to understand it.
And for that matter when the fuck did Greg Easterbrook become edgy in this country? Cheerleaders and current events? Look out it’s the Lenny Bruce of online journalism!
For our money Adam Schefter, Rich Eisen and Joe Posnanski are just about the only people we like and trust at this point.

Rich Eisen makes me laugh a lot...
I wish I worked with them…thatd be pretty awesome.

valid points
Simmons – 100% entertainer, 0% journalist. I understand his humor and half of his pop-culture references, so I’ll read anything that isn’t Boston-centric. Schefter/Eisen – Schefter has always been a great journalist/reporter, and Eisen has always had a likable commentating personality.
Posnanski – JoPo is a great baseball writer but I’m not convinced he’s nearly as good talking about football. Many of his football thoughts are too obvious and will lack a unique angle.
I'm getting worried
The last couple of Whitlock articles I actually read and don’t disagree with much. Damn it…get me some Koolaid.
Chiefs go 9-7. LJ makes 1400 yards. DBowe makes 1200 yards. Defense #18.
10/28--The Koolaid buzz is beginning to wear off. Maybe drop this back to my original thoughts on the year. Chiefs go 6-10 (and that my be optimistic!). LJ gets a restraining order to stay 1400 yards away from the Chiefs. I'll let the rest stand for now. 11/18 Oh My! Dbowe gets a restraining order to stay 1200 yards away from the Chiefs. Argh! Can we go 5-11? Can the defense make #20?
Respectuflly disagree with Whitlock
He throws the offense under the bus while giving the D a pass. Specifically, he blames Cassel and Haley for lack of leadership… something he infers would have magically transformed inferior players like Niswanger into elite linemen.
But that’s not what I saw today. I saw our O line clearly outmatched and outclassed by San Diego’s defense—no amount of leadership was going to change that… not this Sunday. As for the Chiefs defense, what can I say? Rivers left the armpit without a single grass stain on his jersey. That’s inexcusable.
And did Whitlock have to repeatedly make reference to the fact that he was refusing to mention the score?
Did you read the whole article?
He talks about the D

i agree it was a bad game on both sides of the ball
It was hard to tell how bad the D was though because the O kept basically giving the Chargers points. No pressure on Rivers the entire game, and can’t we stop one of those turnovers from becoming points? Just one? No? Ok…
Yeah, bad game all around, don’t overlook the defense by any means.
Exactly. But I blew a gasket when Whitlock blamed Cassel for most of it.
I don’t believe Cassel’s play was terrible, given the circumstances. But Whitlock seems oblivious to those circumstances, namely the injuries to our O-line this season… well, I won’t go on about it. With the exception of Whitlock, every KC fan knows that we no longer have an effective O-line.
Whitlock is pretty on point, actually
He put the loss on the Offense for the most part. Cassel leads that offense, and it is his job to get those guys moving on the field ultimately.
As for the OLine… they aren’t responsible for him not throwing the ball OVER their helmets, nor are they responsible for the fumblaiya that landed in the hands of the DB.
And the fumbled snap? The center. Botching a simple job that he repeats every…single…day. Hardly a protection thing.

I don't buy it.
Cassel isn’t responsible for the offensive line being abysmal. Yes, he made a few mistakes… all quarterbacks do, even the good ones. And make no mistake: Cassel is a good QB.
The pocket wasn’t collapsing… most of the time it never formed because defenders were already in the backfield. It’s an insult to pockets to even call it a pocket. To his credit, Cassel didn’t give up. He fought through it, and I even recall one blown play where he scrambled out of the pocket and, instead of sliding and safely gaining a couple of yards he bulldozed headfirst into defenders and got the first down. That’s leadership: leadership by example.
Our O-line was patchwork at the beginning of the season, and injuries have rendered it completely inept. There’s no fixing our O-line until the offseason. No coaching, no leadership. These guys WILL NEVER get going… They don’t get it because they don’t have the toolsets to get it.
‘The Wanger’ clearly needs to go. I hate to say this, but is it too late to call Ghiaciuc?
Meant to add...
Niswanger is a real telling piece of this. The fact that he was off target on a few snaps lets me know that his focus wasn’t there.
As Whitlock said, that is a leadership thing and while ultimately it falls on Niswanger to be accountable, it IS Haley’s job on the sideline and Cassel’s job on the field to get those guys going, and they couldn’t do it.

Our offensive didn't seem out matched by the Charges D
They just seemed to lack any focus. If you look at our offensive numbers (yardage) they are not that bad.
Other than when they stripped the ball from Charles, you can’t really say the Chargers forced any of the other turnovers. Those turnovers were stupid mistakes by our players not good plays by theirs.

how is it possible that a defensive guy gets to the niswanger high snap before cassel?
how does a defender beat the guy who’s got ten steps on him already!! He was in the shotgun for God sakes. No one should be able to rush like that. Our offensive line is in big trouble still.
Pioli get us a new line out there.
was anyone else annoyed with the repeated basketball comments?
I was getting sick of it! “rivers just throws up a basketball pass” “that was just a nice basketball move” “gates just posted him up on that one”. C’mon man! this is football. I didn’t see any basketball moves out there and probably won’t until we see lebron out there for the browns.
