Question
Why has Denver been so inconsistent this year. Are teams starting to figure out what they’re doing on D?
This is my signature line. It is full of awesome and win.
by KCSatchmo on Nov 29, 2009 8:15 PM CST reply actions
In my opinion, confidence.
The 6-0 start was all about earning respect. We were underdogs in every game except for cleveland. This team played as a unit and wanted to “take it” (respect). They did. Once they got to 6-0 and beat the chargers, we had our bye. That gave everyone a full week to think about all the great things that had been done.
All of a sudden, we lose two in a row. Denver rolls into washington with a great gameplan, great cohesivness and starts to whoop up on the skins. Then Orton went down. We found out how inept Simms is and took our third straight loss. So, all week, leading up to the chargers, Simms took practice reps while Orton let his ankle heal. SD destroyed us because we got behind early and had to pass the ball. We had no balance because we were out of the game early, thanks to Simms. Also, turnovers didn’t help.
Last week, I think we finally saw the team that we should be. A team that feels slighted by the media and the rest of the NFL. Hopefully, we continue to feel that way and play cohesively. If we can do that, we may even make some noise in the playoffs.
If Taylor Swift were to try and tackle me, I'd let her.

My biggest question...
Where in the hell has Eddie Royal been this season?
He’s awesome, but somehow has not thrived in McDaniels’ offense.
-Erykah Badu, I have accepted your proposal. So, Mrs. DTR, let's get to consummating...you are on notice.
-"All praise Chiefus."
good question
could he be a roster casualty next year?
Things I have learned from Arrowhead Pride...
1.) A turtle can win a WR spot in preseason
2.) Everybody loves Kool-Aid
3.) Ochocinco is now not the only player to be referred to by his # (2.7)
4.) Its okay to cry because Vermeil does
5.) You (still) play to win the game
And no matter what CHIEF fans are the greatest!
I don't think so. We are deep at receiver, but he won't be a casualty.
Right now, I’d still put him as our number 2 reciever. Gaffney and Stokely are getting a lot of balls as the number 3 or 4 receiver. If teams start to key in on them more, Royal gets open. I don’t think we need to worry about it.
Plus, this is only his second season. Stokely is getting up there in age, so if anything, McD won’t get rid of Royal for that reason. I don’t think you’ll see a good young receiver on the street next season. Just give him some time to get back from his injury and he’ll be fine.
If Taylor Swift were to try and tackle me, I'd let her.

Actually, neither of those is true
Orton throws the deep routes quite well. He hasn’t been in an offense since Purdue that ran them, but he’s throwing more and more of them in Denver as the offense comes together. He’s getting used to his receivers and defenses are offering different looks, based on the fact that they see that the short passing, ball-control offense has been working. In return, Marshall is getting more go routes and using them well.
Royal hasn’t shown his skill as a deep threat this year or last. That doesn’t mean that he can’t be one, but although quick, he’s not the fastest player. More importantly, he’s struggling to defeat press coverage and in the NFL, that can kill you. Opposing defenses have scouted him enough to know this and it’s weakening his production. He usually gets his catches in 2-3 bunches and is then pressed to move him out of the plays. He’s also struggling to finish his blocks and in our offense, that’s important.
It’s not all bleak. He has a ton of natural skill and he’s pretty strong – he just needs to improve his technique. As he does, he may move more into the slot ala Welker and as Stokley gets older. That will leave an opening for the #2 receiver. alternatively, we may use him as the #2 and move a young fellow named Kenny McKinley into the slot – he’s currently working on the scout team and learning the NFL. He, too, struggles with press coverage, but he’s faster than Royal and moves well – give them a little time and they should be good.
Moreno/Buckhalter in '09
I think that he has just been taken away by defenses.
We have him lined up with Marshall, Stokely, and Gaffney (sometimes scheffler). I think that eventually, McD might like him in the slot, where Stokely plays. McD has said al season that he has taught his QBs to take what is given to them. If Royal isn’t open, someone else is.
As a broncos fan, I’ve seen that McD usually keys a different player every week. It seems that there is a defensive rotation, as far as who they are going to cover. One week the defense may try to stop the receivers, so Scheffler gets open. The next, they may try and take away the middle of the field, so Marshall gets open.
I don’t feel that Royal isn’t doing a good job, but maybe Orton feels more comfortable with Marshall. I’m not sure. Maybe his kick returning may affect his wide receiving in the offense. I’m not sure. I do know that he has been injured, the last few weeks. That has definitely hurt his production.

Question for Bronco fans
How much enjoyment to get in watching Jay Cutler attempt to play QB this year?
Johnnie Morton: The Man. The Myth. The Legend.
by craig in calgary on Nov 30, 2009 11:58 AM CST reply actions
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
“attempt” just about sums it up for many of us. That is the perfect word to use in this situation. During the MHR game threads, there is always extreme jubilation every time there is a “cutlerception”.
You just don’t know what you got til it’s gone. I guess I never really realized how many redzone interceptions we had until I saw how many Chicago has this season. 20 interceptions is insane with quite a few games to go.
There is nothing more fun (or sad) than looking at the WCG threads and watch them self destruct with each redzone possession. I’ve been there and done that and it’s nice to see it happen to another team (although I feel bad for the bears fans, every now and then). Really, the guys at WCG don’t deserve to have this kind of pain, but at least the pain isn’t in Denver.
If only we could send Cutler to the super sparklers………..
Anyways, our first round draft pick gets better and better with each cutlerception, since we have the bears pick.
If Taylor Swift were to try and tackle me, I'd let her.
by Troy Hufford on Nov 30, 2009 12:12 PM CST up reply actions
I agree
I feel bad for Chicago. Even Urlacher recently threw Cutler under the bus
"Look, I love Jay, and I understand he’s a great player who can take us a long way, and I still have faith in him," Urlacher said. "But I hate the way our identity has changed. We used to establish the run and wear teams down and try not to make mistakes, and we’d rely on our defense to keep us in the game and make big plays to put us in position to win. Kyle Orton might not be the flashiest quarterback, but the guy is a winner, and that formula worked for us. I hate to say it, but that’s the truth."

All on board with everything you said.
I am loving it and with all the primetime games he has, I get a front row seat too.
Like others, I gave excuses for his play several times and now Bears fans seem to do the same thing. The one thing that bugged me was his footwork. I mean he always threw off his back foot in Denver and is doing the same in CHI.
Once the orange and blue sunglasses come off, things are so clear now. Boy does he REALLY suck.

What are the thoughts on MHR about McDaniel thus far?
How much is McDaniels success really attributed to Mike Nolan?
Why do you think McDaniels knowing Cassel will help when KC is playing a different system then NE?
How satisfied are you with you number one draft pick Moreno?
by casselreadychiefs on Nov 30, 2009 5:20 PM CST reply actions
I'll take a quick stab on this one.
1) We like him. He’s a good coach. Knows his stuff. Seems to have the players emotionally invested in him (Marshall fist pump, Dawkins calling him “sir”). He is definitely the breath of fresh air that the Broncos and fans needed.
2) I’d say that quite a bit of the defensive success is Mike Nolan. Obviously, Nolan is known for coaching great defenses, so McD would be foolish to try and get in the way of that. McD hand picked Nolan and it ended up working out for both parties. McD got a great defensive coordinator and Nolan got a position where he can re-earn his respect in the NFL.
3) I think that it will help more from a tendency perspective. McD knows what he taught Cassel and knows what Cassel struggled with. Obviously, he’ll tell Nolan a few things that he think may be effective, defensively, against Cassel and hopefully it works out for us. I don’t think that it will be a case where McD can figure out every play call, because, like you said, there is a different system. I do think that they will be able to game plan a little better than other QBs just based on the fact that McD and Cassel have been around each other so much.
4) I’m very satisfied. He’s had a few more turnovers than we would have liked, but some of them were just unfortunate. One was the fumble at the goal line where the ball hit Russ Hochstein’s knee and another was where he got blasted by Ed Reed right after catching the ball. Overall, I’m happy with him. He’s playing like a first round RB should play.
He is a very hard runner and very slippery in space. Last week, he just about broke some Giants’ ankles with a dirty spin move in the back field. He’s a good back. It’s just a matter of time before he gets that 100 yard game.
If Taylor Swift were to try and tackle me, I'd let her.

Haley-Crennel 2010.
by scottbwalters on Nov 30, 2009 11:38 PM CST up reply actions
Interesting. That's a good question.
I guess I’ll go with “perhaps”. The KC chiefs have all the film of the broncos this season and all the film of the patriots a few years ago. McD’s tendencies aren’t a secret. I think that Cassel could give a few tips about what McD likes to run, but ultimately, those tendencies could be found by Haley.
Now, if Cassel tries to start giving the defense a few signal calls from last year’s patriots, that’s a whole different story, altogether. There may or may not be some of that going on.
Regardless, we can say that this matchup will be a familiar one. Cassel vs McD and the chiefs vs the broncos. Everybody knows everybody. It’s gonna be a great rivalry game. That’s for sure.
If Taylor Swift were to try and tackle me, I'd let her.
by Troy Hufford on Dec 1, 2009 10:15 AM CST up reply actions
One wrinkle that Cassel may not be familiar with is...
…the zone blocking scheme. On the other hand, the chiefs have seen that for years from Shanahan teams. I get the feeling though, that McDaniels isn’t exactly enamored of the scheme and is trying to replace it with more power blocking. It’s a work in progress.
If this be Hell, let us make the most of it!

But not against MYG, TJ
We ran almost exclusively ZB against them and were very successful. It seemed to improve both Hochstein and Polumbus’ work, for some reason. Over time, we’ll get larger O-line players, but I’m suspecting that we’ll see mostly ZB in the run game for the rest of this year. Moving to gap and power blocking was one of the factors in the losses.

We needed the Charger game!
It is the games like we played against the Chargers that display where we really need to work, and pickup personell. When we win, there is a tendency to overlook some bad play in areas, due to the excitement of the victory. We seem to play well after a good ass whoopin. This is all part of the learning and evaluation process, and we will win some , we should lose, and vice versa. I do feel good about the Bronc game. Just a gut feeling more than anything. With our schedule, there is no reason we can’t pull out another 3 wins or so, which would be a good trend to begin next season with. I actually predicted the Bengles would be a good team, based on how they finished last season, and drafted Benson on 3 of my 4 FF leagues. I got harrassed a little, but it worked out, so how we finish really should have a big influence on how we start next season, and maybe we can gain a little respect.
