The San Diego Chargers Blow Out the Kansas City Chiefs 43-14

This one was tough to watch - Chargers beat the Chiefs 43 to 14.

The Chiefs lost the turnover battle (-3) and allowed Philip Rivers to torch the defense all day long. Rivers finished the game passing 21/28, 317 yards and two TDs.

The San Diego receivers had big days as well. TE Antonio Gates caught seven passes for 118 yards and two touchdowns. WR Malcolm Floyd had three receptions for 85 yards and RB Darren Sproles added in 66 receiving yards on his own.

The bright spot on the Chiefs' offense was Jamaal Charles. He had fourteen carries for 93 yards. That's a 6.6 yard per carry average.

Here are some more thoughts that we'll be adding to.

The Good

  • Chris Chambers led all Chiefs receivers with 7 receptions for 70 yards and one touchdown
  • Jamaal Charles had 147 total yards including 93 rushing and a touchdown
  • Charles' YPC average was over six yards
  • Brandon Flowers broke up two deep pass plays and forced a Tomlinson fumble on the goal line

The Bad

The Ugly

  • Rudy Niswanger's bad snaps including one the Chargers recovered
  • Jamaal Charles' fumble was at least a 10 point swing
  • Matt Cassel's fumble wasn't forced by anyone

A trap game typically refers to a game against a lesser opponent where a team might get caught looking ahead to the following week.

Why would you be looking ahead to the team in second place when you’re playing the team in first?

mistakes from turnovers to botched snaps, etc.

Plus this game demonstrated how badly we need a safety to help in coverage plus a ton more help on the O-line.

I do however continue to like Chambers and Long. Keepers for next year. I assume Bowe will still be here and perhaps we can get one more young receiver.

That is the point

As the leader of an SB Nation blog, there should never have to be an "especially after his behavior before" caveat.

We haven’t had such a problem with any other team’s behavior, except for John…not even the Raiders.

And his previous transgressions must be taken into account when establishing intent…particularly when the new actions intimate prior behavior.

Rudy is done.

Inexcusable… 2 messed up snaps? It’s not like he could block worth a damn anyways, the one thing he has to do is snap the ball right. And he couldn’t. Bye bye Rudy. Hope all goes well in med school.

Cassel’s little slip when cocking back to throw reminded me of Cutler against SD in week 2 last year. Where is Ed Hochuli when you need him? Ugly. Fugly. Vomit inducing suckage.

Jamaal Charles is special. Screw the fumble (shouldve been blown dead by then anyhow). That kid can run. I seriously see JC as the next CJ. I’ve started him in fantasy every week since he became a starter and he has been over 15 each time. Runs with passion, bounces off of hits, and can find holes where it doesnt look like there are any. Starter for years to come.

Clancy Pendergast needs to go. After the first half, it became clear to me that we needed to stop playing so much zone over the middle and get a man on Gates. We failed to do that and SD was picking apart the zones in the middle.

I know he’s a D-lineman, and it takes a while to “get it” but he doesnt manage to get two men blocking him and even with only one guuy on him, he is getting pushed back. Seems like the only thing he is really having success with is getting his hands in the air. Don’t get me wrong, thats one of the best things a Dlineman can do, but I’m just hoping he really picks it up next season,

Not much

Like I said in the FanPost the other day, it’s all about matchups. The Chargers had a difficult time covering Tony Gonzalez and a tough-time stopping the Pistol. It was a perfect formation to exploit their weaknesses. Kindof like how the Wildcat destroyed the Patriots.

This year, the Chargers match up well against a “regular” offense that doesn’t have a receiving threat at TE.

But that other long pass, against a decent opponent would have been an INT, Rivers better not try to force the Hail Mary early in the first quarter in the playoffs if he wants to win.

its funny how brodie became a solution because of one WEEK ONE performance…regardless, cassel is BETTER…he makes mistakes yes…but….oh whats the point…those that respect what hes doing know whats going on…not even worth arguing that the guy never turns it over, even with the 2 yesterday…and thats with the WORST OL, BAD SNAPS, BAD WR’s(top 3 all waiver wire pick ups)…I mean cmon, we lost by 30 to a team, so what? this is the same team that cut a guy, who instantly became cassel’s BEST target…INCLUDING BOWE…and that is Chris chambers…that speaks volumes about the talent level…

we have some players…but bowe/dorsey/DJ would all be on my list to ship out of town….and I would use charles 2/3 of the time, and get a power back for the other 1/3…..

Beathard was actually good

as a backup to Dawson for years.
Duncan never started for the Chiefs. Not sure how that got in there. He was the #1 overall pick in teh draft tho.
Lee was never a starter either. I wouldn’t have put him in the lineage.

Oh Okay

That was during Dawson’s years in Texas. I do remember a Lee, But Livingston was the Heir apparent. Loved Bill Kenney and of course

Well at least Jared Allen had a sack and an interception on Cutler and Tony G made some great catches today – even LJ had 100 yards – good day for old Chiefs.

In the 3-4 Defense...

Defensive Line up open up lanes for the Linebackers too shoot. So what we need is for Tyson Jackson and Dorsey to continue their growth (maybe speed it up a bit). What we really need is a monster DT.

This space for rent.

..so about that "Where were you on 11/22" topic last week

every response was about us having turned the corner and my post about it being an aberration based on a few lucky breaks was shouted down. Would like to hear from those people this week.

by rdub on Nov 29, 2009 7:43 PM CST reply actions   1 recs

Every week

is an aberration based on a few lucky breaks for most teams in the NFL. See ATL and TEN this week. The teams that get the most lucky breaks are generally refered to as ‘winners’ and occasionally as ‘Superbowl Champions’.

The Kansas City Chief's 2009 record will be 5-11.

thoughts from the game(was there)

early it looked good, obviously we fell apart with the turnovers…Rudy needs to just get cut…

I will say this, Cassel cant be judged till year 2, much like trent’s first year here…

The only thing I walked away with happy….was charles….Oh my goodness…charles was close to breaking 4-5 runs he didnt break, and the fumble he just was up too long…I think that canbe fixed

give us a big back to take half the carry load, and we have a serious weapon, hes 22…and hes one of the fastest players ive ever seen on a football field and I spend a lot of time around the 99 rams.

our DL took a major step back

Charles stood out, flowers got beat and was saved by a late rivers throw…our safeties are just so weak its impossible to evaluate our corners…

Flowers was all over the field and Carr did his part.

Yeah Safeties, Brown almost had a Pic Six “almost”
The middle LB’s would be responsible for the TE, yet
This pseudo cover crap crap sucks.

yeah our safeties got diced by slants, and one on with with Gates...

as for flowers he was fine but his big breakup was simply a bad throw

maybe I wasnt at the game and those at home had a better look? I doubt it

can anyone tell me if the charles catch up the sidelines was a push off? I didnt think he did but every SD fan thought Charles got away with robbery.

He was on the TD catch

Tried to shove it out but maybe sweeping up would have broke that up.

Charles was awesome today

except for that fumble, and he was not holding it like a loaf of bread, so I’m all about the Charles bro-mance today!

There are pieces!

I believe we have a QB, stud RB, a developing WR core. With some key O-line replacements, a big RB to split carries and more time in this system there is a lot of hope. The Defense is somewhat simalarily situated with the need of safety’s and solid LB play. I have to agree that so far, we should have taken Curry. I don’t think we know about Jackson and even Dorsey but so far average at best. I am a firm believer that you never trade your studs for some unknown draft pick. Think if we still had Allen and TG. I don’t want to live in the past but damn we would be a lot better.

I think we can have a better game and a win at home against Denver. Haley is right to say that our team cannot survive mistakes especially a land slide of them.

by casselreadychiefs on Nov 29, 2009 8:53 PM CST reply actions

its weird to say

but I see something forming here…even in a 29 point loss…I saw something different than the herm chiefs….maybe its just my joy over a RB actually bouncing runs outside, and making plays..

by SDChief on Nov 29, 2009 10:09 PM CST up reply actions   1 recs

I agree with that

Obviously the turnovers killed us. Without those it would have been a much closer game. The way the D came out at the beginning and held the Chargers to two 3 and outs was great. Charles is a huge weapon and keeps showing it. I don’t care if LJ had a 100 yard day today, Charles is a huge upgrade. Chambers is showing he is a great addition. If Cassel had a little more blocking from the o-line, giving him a little more time, his completions would go up. It’s a tough loss, but I do see improvement. This team is heading in the right direction. The turnovers just killed us.

YOU are super confused!

Cassell’s long ball looks like a punt. NOTICE: the wide reciever is not supposed to stop and turn around and wait for the ball like he is fielding a punt. Cassell has no arm ,no pocket awareness no idea when to scramble, and is just a small bit more accurate than Jamarcus Russell. Recievers are having to dive after his throws they are rarely on target.

by J ray on Nov 29, 2009 11:27 PM CST up reply actions

Bruce Gradkowski is a small bit more accurate than Russell. Cassel is way more accurate.

present and future

Today, sd used their big wr’s to go deep opening the middle ALL DAY for gates! Hard to watch. Rarley saw anyone near Gates over the middle. Some of those turnovers are fixable flukes. Ball bouncing off helmet and casselk4 botched throw ran back for td by Oliver. Bath those plays were freak accidents. I’m ok with those. I’m not ok with cassel getting 6 rush attempts! Not in his game. He had no time today. And chargers are depleted on def line! Jcharles reminds me of ray rice and Cjohnson. Last year they returned kicks and this year they have been given opportunity. So Jcharles will get his shot next year too! Can’t wait to see him matchup vs Moreno for 2 games. Also, we can win buff and clev game. Maybe a bronco game. Be fun to see us play LJ’s Bengals too. Future has pieces. We can’t go wrong with Suh, Okung, Berry in draft. I hope for qb’s to do well in combine (clausen, bradford and locker). Best case scenario we can trade down with team wanting qb and gather more picks. 1 top 5 player will not change this team.

Matt Cassell sucks,I told ya SO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Tyler was a much better QB ,Cassell has absolutley no pocket presenence. He has no idea when to run ,when to throw it away did you see the play were he decided to run then stopped and turned around to see if someone was behind him. A high school QB knows better. He did the same on third and one as a result he was tackled at the line of scrimmage. He might have the record for most turnovers in a game after that one. He is exactly what I told all of you months ago, just a product of playing on a far superior team. HE IS AWFUL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

by J ray on Nov 29, 2009 11:21 PM CST reply actions

yeah tyler is doing awesome down in miami...

the thought has been creeping into the back of my head recently. i start thinking of what is the chiefs surprise us with a high round qb draft pick in the draft? yeah, i know thats way out there. the only thing that impresses me about cassel is the way he is able to get up off the grass time and time again and stay in the game after getting the crap knocked out of him. i sometimes wonder if thats the only reason he is starting instead of croyle. maybe they r waiting to put together a good o-line before making it a true competition? that is just late night speculation though…on the same level as most conspiracy theories probably.

still, tyler had tg last year, cassel does not this year. that makes a huge difference.

by MountainManMike on Nov 30, 2009 3:33 AM CST up reply actions

no way

i mean a career back up qb is playing like a backup qb i could of told you that a career back up quarterback isn’t a franchise qb no matter what team he came from even the patriots. i rather see brokie croyle be qb… has way more potential. besides i don’t think haley likes cassel anyways i remember at the beginning of the year he basically said so after the second game. he said in every game there is 8 or so plays the qb needs to make to be successful. when asked how cassell did he said there were about 8 plays or so in which he did’t do what he needed to do to win.
