2010 Offseason (If I were Pioli & Haley)
DISCLAIMER: THIS IS YET ANOTHER MOCK DRAFT AND OFFSEASON POST. IF YOU DO NOT ENJOY THESE PATICULAR POST, PLEASE FEEL FREE TO DEPART NOW.
I see alot of progress being made with our beloved Kansas City Chiefs. That being said, there are still alot of holes to be filled, if we want to become a contender. Below, I will discuss what I would like to see done in the off season, and 2010 NFL Draft.
This is a very big off season for the Chiefs. Pioli and Haley will finally have the opportunity to mold this team the way the want it. The "right 53" players will be signed/drafted in the off season. There is a ton of talent in free agency, and there is one guy I think the Chiefs should pursue (More on that soon). For now I will discuss coaching additions.
Offensive Coordinator: The hot topic on the street, is Charlie Weis coming to the Chiefs to fill the void of Offensive Coordinator. There is a connection with Pioli and Haley there. I would personally like to see this happen. He has super bowl experience, and coached one of the greatest QBs of this decade.
Quarterbacks Coach: Alot of people have been talking about bringing in a QB coach to lighten the load on Haley, and give Cassel a coach that can dedicate more time to him. I have heard very little suggestions, as to who should come in and fill that void. The person that keeps popping into my mind, is Rich Gannon. He is a former Chief, and I think he would be the perfect coach for Cassel. Gannon was a career backup similar to Cassel. Gannon also got his shot to lead a team, such as Cassel, and both QBs are mobile. Gannon was a very good leader, and competitor. I think he could enhance Cassel's abilities. He could teach him the pump fake, that was such a deadly weapon for Gannon (similar to Big Ben).
Defensive Coordinator: Another guy the fans want, is Romeo Crennel, yet another Pioli Connection. I also think he can come in and contribute greatly. He has an extensive amount of knowledge of the 3-4 defense, and I remember that patriots defense being beastly for years. He molded young defensive players into great ones, and got extra years out of veterans. Nothing against Clancy, but I don't not like him as a defensive play caller. At times he is too conservative, and others he is too aggressive. He is rarely spot on.
Coaching Acquisitions: Charlie Weis, Rich Gannon, Romeo Crennel
2010 Offseason Additions:
Nose Tackle - Vince Wilfork
This is the guy we should pursue relentlessly. If the Patriots do not franchise tag him, we need to throw how ever much money he wants at him. He is the best nose tackle in the game, and would instantly open lanes for LB's to shoot threw, and make Dorsey's and Jacksons life much easier. Our D-Line would be set for years to come.
Safety - O.J. Atogwe
This has got to be the most underrated safety in the national football league. He is a true playmaker in the secondary. He would be a major upgrade over McGraw or Brown.
Guard - Daryn Colledge
He was not the solution at Left Tackle for the Green Bay Packers, but he is definitely an above average Offensive Guard. He could come in, and solidify a spot of need for us.
Tight End - Bo Scaife
A good catching tight end who can block as well. I think the titans wont sign him because they have Jared Cook waiting in the background.
Free Agent Aquisitions: Vince Wilfork, O.J. Atogwe, Daryn Colledge, Bo Scaife
2010 NFL DRAFT
Note: Im going by the position we would be in if the draft were held today.
Round 1 - ILB Rolando McClain
I too was on the Eric Berry bandwagon, but its looking more and more likely he will not declare for the draft, and stay for his senior year. Rolando McClain is a beast at the ILB position. A very intelligent leader, who is all over the field. Great pursuit in the run game, and very good in pass coverage as well.
Round 2 - WR/PR Golden Tate
This man is a Steve Smith clone! Great hands and toughness, deceptively speedy, and one tough SOB. He is one hell of a playmaker, and would contribute in multiple facets. He can catch it, run it, block defenders, and return punts. If he is not the prototypical Pioli guy, I don't know who is.
Round 2 - OLB Jerry Hughes
I think he is just the guy we need on the outside to rush the passer, along with Tamba Hali. He has 25 sacks, and 20+ TFL in two years. 6'3 255lbs with speed, what more can I say.
Round 3 - OG Mike Johnson
A big mobile, athletic guard who fits our zone blocking scheme. He will open up holes for the Speedy Charles, and keep defenders off of Cassel.
Round 4 - OT Sam Young or OT/OG Vladamir Duccasse
Both of these guys can sit and be groomed to become the starter at RT. Sam Young is a durable, consistent offensive linemen who has experience blocking in a pro style scheme. Vladamir Duccasse is a huge guy with a mean streak. Very motivated, due to his family background and heritage. Could become an excellent linemen in the league.
2010 Draft Picks - Rolando McClain, Golden Tate, Jerry Hughes, Mike Johnson, Sam Young/Vladamir Duccasse
Heres what our starting lineups would look like with these offseason aquisisitions...
Offense:
LT-Albert, LG-Colledge, C-Waters, RG-Johnson, RT-O'Callahan/Young/Duccasse
WR-Bowe, WR-Tate, WR-Long, TE-Scaife
QB-Cassel, RB-Charles
Defense:
CB-Carr, FS-McGraw, SS-Atogwe, CB-Flowers
OLB-Hughes, ILB Williams, ILB McClain, OLB-Hali
DE-Dorsey, NT-Wilfork, DE-Jackson
Special Teams:
K-Succop, P-Colquitt, KR-Charles, PR-Tate
These are moves that I think could essentially make us a contender for years. I could see that defense being in the top 10, the offense in the top 15, and the special teams #! with the addition of Tate as the returner

I like it, but I don't think I can do better, but I do think Pioli will do a great job.
I picked the first one since I don’t think I can do better.
When you fail to prepare, you prepare to fail.
Thanks!
I tried to pick “Pioli” guys. Hard workers with high motors, work ethic, good attitudes, and can play multiple positions.

I dont think Weis or Romeo will be here next year.
I think Weis has a better shot at going to Cleveland to coach Quinn. And I think Belichick was the master behind that “beastly” defense and not Romeo. And I seriously doubt Gannon becomes the QB coach. Pipe dream, is if Oakland lets Paul Hacket go because he isn’t doing a good job with Jamarcus (not that anyone can). According to Trent Dilfer Paul Hacket is the best QB coach in the game.
I also do not see anyway NE will let Wilfork go. I guess I could buy into your top 2 picks, but I can almost guarantee without a shadow of a doubt that Sam Young will not fall that far, has a chance to go in the 2nd round, but probably goes in the 3rd. As for the rest of the picks, who cares impossible to predict that far out anyway.
Bo Scaife sucks, and I know nothing about Atogwe or Colledge. Other than that good job I guess.
This space for rent.
I agree...
its a long shot if either of those coordinators come to KC. Its fun to speculate. I wish gannon would quit commentating, because I do believe he can be an excellent QB coach.
You never know about Wilfork. He will be costly for NE to keep. They also have to sign to starting OL in the offseason. They changed to a 4-3 this season, and Wilfork doesnt fit it quite as well as he fits the 4-3.
Bo Scaife defeinately does not suck. He is the victim of being on a poor offense. When vince young throws for 150 a game, Sciafe wont shine very much.
Atogwe is a pro bowl safety and is known around the league as a playmaker, he just isnt known to the average fan.

I meant he fitsthe 3-4 better than the4-3…Wilfork that is.

Wilfork is a must
NT is the core of the defense. we have solid ends and he will make their job easier and the line would improve greatly. if the line if getting big push, the QB has less time to do what he wants and the secondary has to keep less.
exactly!
We have to get a great NT. Wether that is Wilfork, Terrence Cody in the draft, or Casey Hampton as a stop gap
by Larryemcdaniel on Nov 28, 2009 10:46 PM CST up reply actions
+1...Another EXACTLY!
If we had the monstrous push that a great NT could provide, imagine how many sacks Tamba could get because the QB cant step up. Imagine how many tackles for loss our ILBs would get because two men are being stuffed by the NT and theres no one to block them. That is why Pitt, Bmore, Dallas, etc are succesful 3-4 teams PUSH!

Atogwe
I think he is one of maybe 3 or 4 players that the Rams will not even consider let leaving. He will be franchise tagged if the Rams can’t get him signed long term.
agreed
unless there is some Haynesworthesque kink i his contract he’s going to retire a ram… I still think he’s overrated though. I’d rather use a stop gap until Berry declares
Time is a great teacher... unfortunately it kills all it's pupils.
Which Rolle do you mean?
Antrell? Samari? I’m wondering if you mean Myron, but it would probably take a trade to get both him and Mays, both of whom could be first-rounders.
by burntorangehorn on Nov 29, 2009 2:07 PM CST up reply actions
You may be right
He might get franchised, but if he isnt we should go after him. Another Safety I like is Antoine Bethea for the Colts. Very solid in the pass an run

wow
somones mock that doesnt have us trading dorsey?what a breath of fresh air.im glad somone doesnt think we should trade our almost developed linman for a rookie to start the process all over.

Def not
Dorsey is playing his butt off! He is our best d linemen right now. Place a stud NT in the middle and he becomes even better!

Totally appreciate the disclaimer.
Although, I didn’t read the post because of the disclaimer, I did adhere to it. Thank you.
-Erykah Badu, I have accepted your proposal. So, Mrs. DTR, let's get to consummating...you are on notice.

That being said,
if you turn into a certain few posters who repeatedly post variations of their own mock drafts, hell shall be brought.

good post. a NT and a couple of good LBs would make the Chiefs a lot better. I personally wouldnt use a first day pick on a WR in 2010 though. I think that pick could be better used elsewhere like an edge rusher or a safety.
I usually would agree with you, but Golden Tate is so impressive. I watched him again last night, and WOW! He is unstoppable. As long as we address some oline and secondary in FA, I wouldnt mind drafting a WR in the 2nd

I think that's a solid off-season plan
I have to admit that I opened this thread expecting another half-baked scheme. While some of those moves are a little less likely than others (Weis as OC, winning the Wilfork bidding, etc.), I think that list of moves would represent a very good, albeit inexhaustive, approach. I’d only add that I think a few shots at some cheaper veterans (Rod Hood, mayhaps?) at corner, LB, and tackle.

Thank you
Finally someone sees what Im seeing. I tried to keep it very realistic. No trading Dorsey, no trading back 3 times and acquiring extra 1’s and 2’s no signing all the big name FA’s. I put together a solid plan that would vastly improve the team. Im not calling it a super bowl team, but it would be a nice product on the field, and compete week in and week out.

I'd trade down before taking ILB in the 1st.
Just my knee-jerk reaction, there.
If Eric Berry decides not to declare for the draft (a mistake on his part, imo), I’d be all about multiplying the number of 2nd-, 3rd- and 4th-round picks, because this draft is deep, but not particularly top-heavy. I just hate to start a LB with franchise-type numbers and salary expectations, when I know I’ll be wanting to keep the d-line stocked in front of him, and it sucks to be top-heavy in salary at LB, when your d-line needs help.
1st-round RBs and LBs have a way of leaving you wrong-footed in the future, when you need to pay 2 or 3 new guys to set the table for ’em, but you need all 2 or 3 at bargain basement prices.
No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.
NE seems to pick up LB's in FA
Why wouldn’t Pioli? I do hope he takes at least 2 linemen in the first 3 rounds though. After today Fox with our first second, and O’Dowd or Wisniewski with our third, Golden Tate with our 2nd #2. We need to beef up the right side of our line and need a dependable center. I hope Brown steps up at RG or we bring one in………Round 1 BPA, I don’t care if it’s Mays, Berry, Suh, McCoy, Spikes, that guard stag has a mancrush on, his name escapes me tonight, Bryant, or Okung, I’d even take a pass rushing OLB. I’d still flush one of our big name players for more picks though.
by mcclanahanman on Nov 29, 2009 11:26 PM CST up reply actions
correction...
I don’t have a mancrush on a Guard… lots of other guys on here too…
Lupati is the name, i believe
I’d want to trade down or take McClain IF Berry and Okung are off the board.
* "I doubt anyone will miss Connor Barth except UCrawford"
* the LB corps may become the biggest strength of the Chiefs in 2009
* The OL is NOT as bad as you think it is... give it time, and you'll see improvement this season
* Stats are for losers
LOL
Okung will be gone when we pick and I could have sworn it was you rallying for Lupati in the first. Point is no matter which way you look at round 1, someone’s going to rip your head off.
Looking at the draft after this one, maybe we should wait to take a LT, go C and RT this year, see if Ndukwe and Colin Brown can handle the RG spot. Next year go LT, and RG, the O-line picks are deeper.
It’s a process isn’t it?
by mcclanahanman on Dec 1, 2009 3:22 PM CST up reply actions
I'm not sold on Romeo at all. He hasn't proven himself outside of Hoodie's oversight.
If Charlie is available and the best man for the job then so be it. If not oh well. there’s plenty of others available next year. We might be completely blindsided by that.
I have a suggestion for QB coach. STEVE DEBERG!! That’s the answer right there.
Dwayne Bowe
I have the strangest feeling that we are going to trade him in the offseason. I duno, but call it a hunch…If that happens I expect the chiefs to receive a 2nd and 4th. With those picks, heres a updated mock…
RD 1 – ILB – Rolando McClain
RD 2 – WR/PR – Golden Tate
RD 2 – OT – Jason Fox
RD 2 – OLB/DE – Jerry Hughes
RD 3 – C – Matt Tennant
RD 4 – SS – Kam Chancellor
RD 4 – OT/OG – Vladamir Duccasse
Starters
Offense:
Tate, Chambers, Long, Scaife
Albert, Waters, Tennant, Colledge, Fox
Cassel, Charles
Defense:
Dorsey, Wilfork, Jackon
Hughes, Williams, McClain, Hali
Carr, Chancelor, Atogwe, Flowers
Hmmm
Two LB’s in the first two rounds? No Center? We already have a RT developmental project in Brown. If we don’t land Vince Wolfork, what’s plan-B? I think we need some addition secondary help as well. and a big-ass blocking TE. God Bless this team has roster issues :(
I’d love Gannon as QB coach but he may be happy with his media gig. I’d also like to throw Damon Huard’s name out there for QB coach.
