The Kansas City Chiefs look to extend their winning streak to three games when they visit the San Diego Chargers Sunday. Will the Chiefs build on their victory over the defending Super Bowl champions or are the Chargers too hot to stop?

Here are three players (Offense, Defense and Special Teams) from each team to keep your eyes on.

Cromartie's a joke

He isn’t the best player in their secondary at all. Quentin Jammer is easily better. But that’s besides the point. We need to bring pressure, but we need to stick these recievers. I’m not worried about LT or Sproles breaking a long run. I’m terrified of getting completely burned in the passing game again. Vincent Jackson is a monster, and if our little 5’9 Brandon Flowers doesn’t get some help over the top from our safeties he’s in for a long, long game. I’m expecting Gates to be more involved in protecting Rivers than slipping out into the open, a constant battle between him and Hali. Last year Dorsey had his first sack in San Diego (I was there to witness it :)), let’s hope Jackson has the same fate.

I’m pumped up for this game guys. It’s a pity I have to work tonight, otherwise I’d be in San Diego right now looking for all my Chiefs.

Go.... Chiefs?

Man, it just doesn’t sound right. Anyway, as a Broncos fan, I’ll try to be pulling hard for you guys to beat the Dolts this week. (BTW, thanks for that win against the Steelers too, that’s major help for us if we don’t win the division _). Looking forward to cross-blogging next week too— I always love it when we play you guys. And I’ll be at the game next week so I’m even more pumped.

And yes, I do have a point for being here. Seeing as we haven’t played you yet this year and I haven’t really paid much attention to any Chiefs games all season (except last week), I was wondering if I could get an early status report before I watch the game tomorrow so I know what to expect. How is Cassel coming along? Is the defense making a good transition to the 3-4? What players I have probably never heard of have stepped up for you? With LJ cut, are they FINALLY giving the ball to Jamaal Charles??

Thanks a million and good luck tomorrow!

Matt Cassel hasn’t shown us greatness behind the amazingly lackluster offensive line that we have this year. The line has been playing better in the 4th quarter, and this is when Cassel has shined(also with Chambers major help).

Jamal Charles has been given a majority of the snaps and seems to be the RB of the future at this point.

Have you heard of Andy Studebaker… 2 int vs the Steelers. He was Mike Vrable’s backup, and has shined during his first start. Brandon Albert is a pretty solid corner and knocked out a fumble last week. Tamba Hali and Wallace Gillberry are leading the team in sacks.

Anyways that is just a quick report of our players.

Thanks for coming over in good faith papigrande. We appreciate the support against the Dolts. I’ll give it a shot at answering your questions, though others may have differing opinions.

1. Personally I think Cassel is doing pretty well. Considering everything the team has gone through, from a cruddy O-line to a revolving door of recievers, it could certainly be a lot worse, in fact the last few weeks it’s been looking more and more positive. He’s not Brady or Manning (yet), but assuming he doesn’t get killed playing now, he’s definately a bright spot.

2. The D has been up and down. Our numbers pretty much suck (so does the O’s to be honest), but it’s a heck of a lot better than last year. We’re already 1.5 times the 2008 sack total, with signs of a pass rush even if we have trouble at times getting the QB on the ground. We’re a bit thin at safety right now, and the play there has been more than weak at times, giving up several big plays. IMHO the corners are still doing great, Flowers in particular. Though I do wish they were more physical up on the line. We’ve had a lot of surprises with the LBs, which I’ll cover in your next question.

3. I can’t really comment on who you have or haven’t heard of, but I’d imagine that yeah we have a few that are playing well for us. Obviously there’s Chambers, but with all the talk about him the last few weeks (and coming from a divisional team) he’s probably been on your radar. Lance Long and Leonard Pope have done pretty well here recently as well, I’m hoping to continue to see their growth and use. The pieces are still in motion on the line and while it’s slowly improving, I’d like to see it solidify a bit more before giving any major shout-outs. Our new RT has been doing a decent job though (not going to butcher his name sorry).

With the D, the biggest surprises has been the LBs to me as I mentioned earlier. Corey Mays showed up in pre-season with a vicious shot on Favre and has kept in the game since then with big plays. I didn’t realize it until today, but Demorrio Williams has 84 tackles this year already, which seems like a big number to me so evidently he’s making more of an impact than I thought. Tamba Hali has definately made his transition and is starting to look like a beast as an OLB. I’m hoping it holds and as he gains more experience he gets even scarier. While Mike Vrabel has been solid, he’s been down for a game and a half while Andy Studebaker has just exploded with two INTs and a sack last week, and solid play against Oakland.

Quick note on the front three. Dorsey has picked it up this year despite the position change, and Jackson is doing decent if not incredible thus far. Our 3rd down DEs Wallace Gilberry and Alex Magee I feel have been impressive, particularly Gilberry.

4. Yes, with 2.7 (there is not LJ here at AP) gone JC is getting the ball now. While he hasn’t had an explosive rushing game in the two since he took over, it’s a heck of a lot better than what we had before. As you may have seen, he took the opening kick to the house last week, and showed some toughness in OT, not to mention the 44-yard rush he did get in Oakland.

Probably much longer than neccessary, but I’m a detail guy. Ravenhawk got out a short and sweet answer while I typed it up, even if he credited Brandon Albert for Brandon Flowers’ forced fumble (Just busting your balls Raven). I’d pretty much bet money that not everybody agrees with me, but this is just my thoughts.

Thanks.

I don’t comment too often, and most of the time it’s jokes. Figured I was due something serious and in depth.

Thanks Arch and Raven!

It’s good to know that I can go into the game tomorrow feeling like I know what’s going on. But there’s still one thing… there’s seriously a guy on your team called Lance Long? That… is… awesome. Again, thanks and best of luck to you all tomorrow.

Also, I saw a hilarious quote on 2.7 from his Wikipedia page. Don’t know if you’ve seen it yet:

His third arrest for assault came on February 24, 2008, after allegedly pushing a woman’s head at a nightclub that night. It is believed Johnson tried to run from the police, but was tackled after two yards.

LOL, papi I hadn't seen that.

Seriously though, yes we have a receiver named Lance Long, the Chiefs picked him up from the Cardinals. He was on the Practice squad for a couple of weeks and was brought up recently. He plays with a lot of heart and is a pretty decent slot receiver so far.

We also have the last pick of the Draft, Mr. Irrelevant, Ryan Succop (pronounced SUCK-UP). It’s okay to laugh, he’s used to being kidded about his name. What do we call him here? Das Boot. Why? Because he is very, very relevant. This rookie kicker can kick the 53 yarder and has done so a couple of times. He’s pretty damn accurate and has hit almost everything put in front of him.

I can't believe I forgot the kickers...

hangs his head in shame

Yeah, both our kickers are really good. Most would probably say the best two players on the team.

As for the 2.7 quote (btw, nice job picking up immediately on that), I’d heard about it before somewhere. I’d say it’s about 90% sure to be one of those incorrect things on wikipedia, in this case put there by a disgruntled chiefs fan.

We all know if it were true he would have been tackled after running into is bodyguard and falling down.

LOL @ DJ

First, I’d love for Derrick to have a great game. But last week’s performance was great for the newspaper box score and horrible to someone watching the game. His high tackle number was from his tackles on receptions he allowed with his spotty coverage. He missed his assignments and was often out of place. As stated previously by other members, he took bad angles at ball carriers. If he plays like he did last week, it will not be a good thing for the Chiefs…
