Chiefs P Colquitt Still Showing He's One of the Best in the NFL
Punter Dustin Colquitt currently leads the Kansas City Chiefs, and the NFL, in a few important punting categories. Ranking 16th and 22nd in punt and kick return coverage last season, the Chiefs are now one of four teams that rank in the top ten of both.
An impressive turnaround I must say.
This weekend, Colquitt and the Chiefs will face one of the better punters in the NFL. Mike Scifres of the Chargers is about a tenth of a yard ahead of Colquitt for career net punting average, since 1970.
Here are a few other areas Colquitt leads or is near the top in the NFL:
Net punting average
3rd - 41.3 (Leader: Shane Lechler 44.5)
Punts inside the 20
1st - 29
Fair catches forced
1st - 18
Punts downed
1st - 15
Some of the numbers are even more impressive once you put them into context. For example, Colquitt's 29 punts inside the 20 is already a franchise record for a season.
He has had 15 punts downed, which is tops in the league. Second place has 9.
So, truly an impressive season for Colquitt. Hopefully he continues to be an elite punter.

Special teams
Don’t underestimate how big special teams have been for KC this year.
The improvement in coverage, Kicker and KR have been HUGE for field position, and keeping the Chiefs in games… you could say the Chiefs would be O-for-the-season without Charles’ KR TD and Succop’s kicking.
I absolutely credit Pioli and Haley for making this a focus, and doing it right… now, if they can just get a stud PR/KR in the draft (or get Lance Long to do it) !!!
* "I doubt anyone will miss Connor Barth except UCrawford"
* the LB corps may become the biggest strength of the Chiefs in 2009
* The OL is NOT as bad as you think it is... give it time, and you'll see improvement this season
* Stats are for losers

I agree that the change in personell management has had a huge impact on ST.
For the first time we are signing players and keeping players that are special team guys. Special teams are a lot more important than people think. I am glad the chiefs have finally started to focus on becoming better.
i agree even with a good punter last year our special teams sucked...
this season it is vastly improved
Hopefully he keeps it up
and starts to smash some records. dude is amazing and hopefully one day he can make the hall of fame :P then we’ll have a punter and kicker in hof. that is if we dont have a punter yet, i know we have a kicker
See ya Later Larry Johnson, or now forever known as "2.7"
what happened to his little bro up in denver?
I thought he was kicking well in the preseason and (i guess?) he got cut.
yep, he did get cut

not only did he get cut...
but the guy who took his spot got cut and then they brought in a guy who i could literally punt better than…at least in the first game i saw him in.
