Potential Rift Between Pioli and Haley?
My fellow AP'ers, hope all of you are enjoying your Thanksgiving Eve as much as I am here in beloved Freehold, New Jersey- Happy and Healthy Thanksgiving to all of you. I'm posting up a fanshot about this because I am concerned about something I heard on the radio today. I was driving home from work today and listening to WFAN 660 which is the New York City sports radio much like 810 is for Kansas City. Mike Francesa's talkshow featured a segment with Jay Glazer from Foxsports. They were talking about coaches on the hot seat and who could potentially be fired and hired bla bla bla...after they talk about a few coaches Francesa throws out the "What about Haley in Kansas City?" question and proceeds to go on and say "I heard that him and Pioli aren't getting along." Jay Glazer continued to say that he thinks there has been some talk that Haley might not be coaching here next year if we don't win more than 5 games and also went on to talk about how Scott Pioli was the reason for Bill Bellichick's image as a a bitter and disrespectful coach. He said in reality, Bill is a very laid back guy and isn't mean at all. He said Scott Pioli would tell the players that Bill Bellichick "expects this out of you at this time and you better not be late with this or else Bill is going to let you hear it every time he could to instill his ego into the players." And proceeded to go on and on about how Scott Pioli has this power tripping image that isn't good for a coach like Haley and a franchise like Kansas City. He went on to say that Pioli keeps too many secrets and him forcing Haley to keep secrets and have this Parcells-like attitude is not good for a franchise in the rebuilding stages. He went on to say that the fact this is happening in Kansas City now people don't realize what's really going on behind the scenes and is causing a rift between him and Haley. Francesa kept going back to the fact that he "heard" they aren't getting along and all that then they changed the subject but they talked about this for a good 5 minutes of the 10 minute segment. Either way, I usually take everything Francesa says with a grain of salt but I figured since it was Jay Glazer reporting too it couldn't all be bologna. It's not like this is Chris Mortensen saying this, Jay Glazer's reputation and name is highly respected throughout the league so for him to say something like this means something. As soon as I head this the only thing I wanted to do was come home to AP and share this news with you guys and see what you all thought.

You need to re do this whole thing as a fan post!
No one will read this in fanshot without a title. Put something other than a question mark! This is big stuff, share it. Let everyone know what it’s about in your title. Good luck friend.

I think....
People can talk about whatever they want, and saying that they “heard” is nothing more than “I hope people are interested in hearing this.” Remember these people get paid to get fan/caller interaction and if you agreed with everything they said then it would make for a boring talk show.

Funny
I just got an email about this. Once they podcast it, I’ll take a look. But this is interesting.

I have said it before
The bashing that Todd and Scott are getting is just rumor mill crap. Todd just went on record saying Scott is getting him players when they need them and doing a good job at it. As for Todd? Every win we have had this year the players are jumping and grabbing onto Todd just like he was just another player. So if Scott and Todd are just hard ass bad guys I wouldnt see this kind of stuff going on.

What would he say?
Its not like he would say “Yeah Scott is a major prick and I hate his guts”. OF COURSE he is going to say they get along just fine.
Despite the win vs the Steelers, I’m still not sold on either one just yet.

I second that DJ......it's impossible to know because it's so secritive.
The players sure aren’t going to say anything different.

yeah
they would never publicly come out and say something like this obviously, or anything bad that is happening with the franchise unless its concrete..but for this type of information be buzzing around between radio and the media isn’t good. definitely something we should all keep an eye on.
Give Todd Haley a full regular and off-season to build Bowe's Cassel, and we will all wreap the benefits...

I don't know how serious to take it
For Glazer to be trying to convince us that Pioli was pulling Bellichicks strings is a bit far fetched to me.

it doesnt sit well with me either DJ
but its Glazer…I have a very close family friend who works for foxsports- Peter Schrager – he covers college and NFL and works with Glazer and I just facebooked him about this and he told me that if Glazer says it theres usually truth behind it.

I don't believe it
these guys have been on the same page from day one, and I’ve seen NOTHING credible that would indicate otherwise
* "I doubt anyone will miss Connor Barth except UCrawford"
* the LB corps may become the biggest strength of the Chiefs in 2009
* The OL is NOT as bad as you think it is... give it time, and you'll see improvement this season
* Stats are for losers

this Parcells-like attitude is not good for a franchise in the rebuilding stages
Seemed to work for Parcells in Dallas and Miami (I know he wasn’t the coach but he had a big part in things I’m sure).
I know the argument will be it’s because Parcells has a reputation/history and Haley doesn’t, but it’s still the same attitude.

George W Bush had the same attitude as Franklin Rosevelt
Doesn’t mean it worked out the same way.
by ChiefDJ on Nov 25, 2009 9:16 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Doesn't mean it can't either
I wouldn’t have as much of a problem with the statement if it was more about the Chiefs specifically, like “his attitude may not be the best fit for the Chiefs at this time” or something.
To say that it’s not good for a franchise in the rebuilding stages implies that any franchise that’s rebuilding shouldn’t hire someone with a Parcells-like attitude.

I think it has more to do with
the difference between Parcells and someone trying to imitate Parcells.
Like the difference between Bellichick, and someone trying to imitate Bellichick like Mangini.
I want Haley to be succesful. But I think he has a better chance of being succesful by working with what he’s got and doing his own thing than trying to copy a coaching genius. Parcells is succesful because he is charismatic and a natural motivator. Haley needs to find his own way.
Same goes with Pioli. He should not be trying to run the Chiefs exactly the way he did with the Patriots with Bellichick as the coach because Haley is not Bellichick.

Fair enough
I would agree. There’s only so far you can go imitating someone you admire. At some point, you have to put your own twist on it.

Bellichick is a nice guy and Pioli is a Sith Lord?
Has the universe gone mad?

Perhaps, but is an evil Chiefs empire so bad if we win?
I’d love to see somebody photoshop up a pic of Pioli as Palpatine and Haley as Vader. It’d be great.

Yes this makes sense. I have seen how cheery and outgoing Belichek is now that Pioli left.

Hah.

So if Pioli was pulling the strings around the Patriot Organization, does this mean Pioli was the true mastermind.
Is it possible that Haley and Pioli are not gelling perfectly. Possibly, but I tell you what, winning makes it a lot easier to get a long.
by saskwatch on Nov 26, 2009 9:40 AM CST reply actions 0 recs
Personally I don't care. Just win! That's it. There is no other answer.
Who cares if Pioli is a big douche bag. His job is to to urn us into winners.

didnt JW have something to say about this...
he said that all his sources said that coach B was the mastermind. this could be why his sources might think that.

Wait...
went on to talk about how Scott Pioli was the reason for Bill Bellichick’s image as a a bitter and disrespectful coach.
How can you argue that? The image of Belichick as a bitter, disrespectful coach is from his own words and body language at press conferences and on the field….I don’t disagree with how he handles himself…but this whole thing is foolish…

Agreed
Pioli’s always been subordinate to Belichick and Belichick’s reputation has been earned from observable behaviors on Belichick’s part. It’s pretty farfetched to attribute the coach’s personality to the GM.
Not saying that it’s impossible that Pioli’s a colossal asshole whose obsession with secrecy holds teams back, but I doubt he’s some kind of puppet master who holds that kind of sway over his coaches.

Good
I’m guessing ( hoping) Haley stood up for some of the players and said let me coach them. You can’t try out new guys for the first 6 weeks of the season and win over the respect of any of the players.

Um, when the Colts beat the Pats.....
Belichick’s body guard knocked a camera man on his ass when he was getting too close to Bill. And then Bill ran away from the scene rather than help the guy up. Bill’s a prick and there’s no way in hell anyone can blame Pioli for Bellichick being a surly guy. Period.
I’ve seen interviews with Belichick and I’ve seen interviews with Pioli. Pioli always seems like a cool guy. Belichick always seems like a prick. Explain that.
