The Good And The Bad Of Scott Pioli

First lets start off with the Ugly.

Offensive Line First of all he did nothing to help this line. I think this Mike Goff was a good pickup who Todd Haley killed in his conditioning plan because before coming to KC he was a 4 star guard rated by Scout inc. So Scott did a good job there, but as of signing offensive tackles he flopped there were some solid lineman who where cut and where free agents for weeks to name a few Orlando Pace 5 star scout inc pick, Levi Jones 4 star, Mark Tauscher 4 star,  John Runyan 4 star and Kevin Shaffer 3 star. These guy would be hella better then Albert and Ryan.

where we could have had Pace at left tackle, Albert at left guard, Niswanger at center, Brian Waters at right guard, and either Kevin Shaffer, Levi Jones, John Runyan or Mark Tauschcher. How could you not just sign two of these guys.

Then there is at Corner back this guy has the audacity to sign Travis Daniels, Mike Richardson what is he thinking when there were solid Veterans like  Chris McAllister, Mike McKenzie and hell even Patrick Surtain. All these guys would look better then Carr,Daniels,Richardson. I think it shows when you give up 400 yards threw the air.

and now theres a void at safety. Other then Corey Chavous who is probably out of gas, we will probably have to sign some free agent corner.

THE GOOD

The good new is we are about to get more wins then Herm Edwards got in 2 seasons so that good and are young players are starting or playing well. Like Flowers, Studebaker, Bletcher,Magee,Lance,Charles,Dorsey.

So we have some huge building blocks I just think we need some more good coaches like a offensive coordinator and a guy who knows a thing or two about quarterbacks.

Some other good news is maybe we will draft out of the top 5 if we can win 2-3 more games.

and Scott signed some good free agents like Corey Mays, Wade, Long, Guitterez and trading for Matt and Vrabel.

and so I project we go 7 and 9 beating Denver,Buffalo, Cleavland, and Denver again. So we win the 3 out of the 6 six games left and draft about 7-9th and get Bryan Bulaga because Berry said he is staying for his senior year for Tennessee.

OL/CB

the guys you mentioned are pretty much ALL washed up and wouldn’t help this team.

I think Pioli has made a LOT of moves on the OL… but several haven’t worked out as planned… but some HAVE

  • O’Callaghan has played solid at RT… I’ll take a young guy like him who’s getting better over those injured washouts you mentioned.
  • Alleman/Ndukwe… while neither has taken a strangle-hold on a starting job… both have contributed and played OK. They are AT LEAST good depth, and one of them could be a starter at RG next year (Ndukwe)
  • He got rid of Sackintosh… that guy was terrible, and over the hill

* "I doubt anyone will miss Connor Barth except UCrawford"
* the LB corps may become the biggest strength of the Chiefs in 2009
* The OL is NOT as bad as you think it is... give it time, and you'll see improvement this season
* Stats are for losers

It’s huge to get two guys that can AT LEAST add solid depth where it was badly needed with a single late-round pick. I agree on O’Callaghan.

what i ment by the corners is

those guys are better then Daniels and Richardson

Hate Larry Johnson.

by royalsfan99 on Nov 25, 2009 1:48 PM CST reply actions

yeah... maybe...

but those guys are also old and slower…

I think the Chiefs learned that old and slow CB at the end of their careers aren’t the answer…

Ty Law and Surtain proved that when they were here.

I’d rather have Daniels and Richardson, at least for this season…
I still think 2009 is as much about evaluating future talent as it is winning… those older guys aren’t part of any teams “future”… so why not take a chance on developing a younger guy?

but these guys could just come for one year and then be relased to retire

then so you draft one or get a upgrade in free agency.

I see your point

BUT, that’s a SHORT TERM strategy for a team that is trying to make the playoffs in 2009…
NOT a long term strategy for a rebuilding team with little chance of the playoffs this year.

Yes, I know Pioli and Haley brought in a couple of guys that could be 1 yr “wonders”… Mike Brown, Mike Vrabel, Mike Goff (weird that they are all "mikes)

BUT, they were brought in for leadership and to help with the transition starting in training camp and OTAs… these vets that are still on the waiver wire wouldn’t bring anything that isn’t already here, IMO… at least not at this point in the season

All being Mike's

was probably pre-meditated due to the superior mental abilities of people with that name; therefore, they knew that their experience would help in the locker room as well as on the field! :)

Great tune sir!

I remember when that album 1st came out in 77! I had just graduated & listened to it repeatedly on my 8 track player & trying to experience some of that “Paradise by the Dashboard Lights!” while parked on some out of the way country road.

I’d rather see guys like Ndukwe or Alleman come in and get time this year and then be back ups in the future. Part of the process of rebuilding this team is to gain depth. Having one year players who are going to retire provides nothing as opposed to getting eventual number 2’s in here and giving them experience.

What's the vote to agree or disagree about?

Hard to follow… Anyway, O. Pace is done, have you watched him play this year? Taucher finally got healthy a couple weeks ago and got hurt again. I completely disagree that those two guys would have helped the O-line this year. .. and you still have Rudy at C on your idea of an improved O-line

2009-10 Predictions:
1. Chiefs will win ATLEAST 6 games, which is a big improvement over 6 wins in 2 seasons
2. Succop will bring stability to the K position for the first time in years
3. Chiefs D will atleast double the number of sacks form last season
4. Cassel will be a top 15 QB
5. Todd Haley won't make a poster and jump around holding it up welcoming the Chiefs players to summer camp, I mean TRAINING camp

Your comment on Goff getting killed by conditioning is absurd

Goff was a declining player. He was suckign for the Chargers which is why they let him go and I can’t, for the life of me figure out, why Haley kept him in the starting lineup as long as he did and while I am sorry for his trouble, I am glad he got hurt.

I just wish we could've picked up Pioli MUUUUUUUCH earlier so he could better evaluate.

He was put at a disadvantage when he accepted the job pretty late in the offseason game.

by jk86 on Nov 25, 2009 3:19 PM CST reply actions

I really do not agree with a lot of this post.

All of the O-lineman you have mentioned are on the decline. I might argue that O’Callahan has actually performed better that any of them have to date this season. You have to be careful about old guys. Just because they were great players does not mean they are any more. Orlando Pace a 5 star player? Pace is a future hall of famer but if you have seen him play his current play is not 5 star. He is sometimes okay in pass protection, but gets no push in the running game. Tauscher if healthy would have been a nice pick up, and he failed the team physical and now we see why. I don’t think Runyan was reay until recently.

The only issue I have with the way that Pioli has addressed the O-line is that we should have looked there a little earlier in the draft.

Half of the players you mentioned in the Good about Pioli were already on the team when Pioli got here.

Seriously

Do you actually post cut albert????…..Wrong He is one young and in develpement that alone takes awhile when you are talkin lineman I only see good linemen come out of college and be successful once ever 3 or 4 years second he now has to learn new coaching ways that in its self is hard enough its not like instant pudding where pow its good just like alanta and miami were not building old free agents and stuff so we can be playoff team one year then not really know what we are another…were developing a consistant contendar and that takes time and you must start young so when they are performing at a high level you have your new drafted rookies learning the system and the nfl and not getting thrown in the fire

by kcman16 on Nov 25, 2009 5:00 PM CST reply actions

Orlando Pace has played much worse than Albert this year...he is not a good lineman...

The others were all passed up too, for good reason…Only until recently.

And the pass yards given up has much more to do with time in the pocket than the CBs…Anybody can get open (against any D) with as much time are we allow.

The conditioning observation is ludicrous at best my friend. Really bad there. Wow!

I don’t think there was anyone else worth a crap or we would have tried them out. We tried out every one including the vednors at Arrowhead. Next year will tell a lot about Pioli.

Did I miss something I have no heard anything for sure about Berry returning or not know he ran out thru the T on senior day to me sounds more likely hes leaving than returning

I think he'd be insane not to leave

he’s nearly guaranteed a top 10 pick

There was an article on ESPN...

Basically said that Berry really enjoys college, and going to the NFL isn’t a priority right now. Will talk with his family at the end of the season.

a win today

would really solidify my chance of being right when I said chiefs 6-10 in 2009, best case scenario. How good would it feel to beat the bolts, today ? they are ripe for the picking in their defensive backfield. with a lil luck cassel could have a heydey. If we catch the ball, that is. i wanna see 20 pump fakes outta cassel today. ok, 15 lol

Too much pressure on Cassel for him to handle.

No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.
