It's Official: Chiefs S Maurice Leggett to Injured Reserve

Well, all the speculation was right on this one.

The Kansas City Chiefs have officially placed S Maurice Leggett on IR meaning his season is done.  Leggett had what appeared to be a painful shoulder injury in Sunday's win over the Pittsburgh Steelers.

He hadn't been at practice the last two days fueling speculation that his injury was serious.

The Chiefs are now even more thin at safety.  Leggett was the backup to SS Mike Brown and FS Jon McGraw.  Looks like DaJuan Morgan will see some more time back there.

The Chiefs have an open roster spot now but haven't announced any new additions.  There were no new faces at practice this afternoon.

We're not sure who the Chiefs will sign but in the past they've been quick to bring someone aboard.

Why isn't someone already signed this time?

I'm not sure.  This is completely a guess and trying to connect some dots but maybe they've put in a waiver wire claim on a player and they're waiting until this afternoon to see if they are awarded a player.

I am guessing it is a waiver claim that’s pending…

Agreed

He just went on waivers a day or two ago and the timing would be perfect. Plus he has that ’Parcell’s’ connection

yeah, I'd be fine with him or

Mike Hart, RB
or that CB

all three were waived yesterday, so they would be claimed by 3pm today

I think we are content at CB

Even with Leggett gone we have Daniels, Richardson, and Washington as guys that could step in at nickel and dime and on ST.

As for RB, it depends on the injury status of Savage and the durability of Smith coming off of injury. Don’t forget we have Javarris Williams on the PS.

Roth gets my vote, but I wouldn’t be surprised if we brought in someone no one has ever heard of.

i like Hart more than Roth

of course Im basing a lot of that on what a beast Hart was for Michigan

My understanding was

that he was sent to waivers due in large part to a “falling out” of sorts with Parcells’ regime. Not saying I disagree with bringing him in but it’s worth noting WHY he was cut.

But who....

A safety or corner?

Legget was very average on coverage. Athletic but the coverage needed work. I’m sorry to see his season end, but hope whoever we pick up somehow becomes an upgrade.

theoretically, they could stand pat at DB…

McGraw/Morgan at FS
Brown/Morgan at SS
Carr CB

True

Safety depth was only an issue when Jon McGraw was hurt. DaJaun Morgan has stepped it up. I think we are fine at DB unless there is another injury.

Just glad to see nobody has said

they are glad legget is gone because they think he sucks…get tired of probably out of shape dudes saying people in the NFL suck, and he did do a descent job.

by ZachMartin2 on Nov 25, 2009 12:52 PM CST reply actions

He has had a bad season

But he is still a playmaker. I am not happy he is on IR, but I am not too disappointed either, considering we have capable backups. Plus this opens up a roster spot — you never know who might be a diamond in the rough.

by Nick Britt on Nov 25, 2009 12:59 PM CST up reply actions

ok...

we kind of have a right to say what we want about these players without going too negative…to be fair, leggett has been VERY POOR this season…and honestly I feel this is due to not enough focus because of his aspiring rap career…..Now you can say, “probably out of shape dudes” but honestly, I was born with a handicap..I can never play a sport, and at this point, hold a job due to the pain…so does that mean I cant say that he HAS A CHANCE, so instead of WASTING IT on his rap career. focus on football..Now, you want to rap, go rap, but if your job is playing football, play football…Ron Artest proved what happens when you focus on a rap career(he asked for TIME OFF), Tank fits into that as well…

and you know, my father works 24 hours a darn day traveling all over the place, always has, he will NEVER see anywhere near what leggett makes in a season…so I dont feel bad AT ALL for saying that he needs to step it up…because honestly, he CAN do it, he CAN try…to me a “decent job” is not good enough, you are in the NFL, making so much money its not even funny…Do your job, Dedicate yourself to it.

but I guess you can go ahead and just say Im someone that cant play and is out of shape so who am I….well, I am not saying I can take Leggett in any sport, or even Madden…Im just saying the guy is not giving football his full attention, and his play is not up to par. Period.

by SDChief on Nov 25, 2009 2:50 PM CST up reply actions

Ok

I get that but I wouldn’t say that if it weren’t true. It seems a lot of people forget the level these players are and how much it takes to be here, thats why it pisses me off when some Dbag basically says they could do better. Not to mention they aren’t taking into account the play that was called, the D-line play or anybody else’s responsibilities…Just sayin I’ve spent a lot of time at arrowhead and it seems there are way to many people who yell out stupid sh!t. Maybe I’m wrong, but I would rather here about almost anything then hear about how much JoeBlow thinks that dback or qb or anybody sucks.

Then that just make it easier for Pioli and Haley

Funny

I just pulled up the Chiefs roster 10 minutes ago and noticed Mo-Leg was listed on IR. When I refreshed the AP Home page this fanpost was up there…

You guys are good!!!

Just out of curiousity...

Why are we calling him an Safety here?

The mothership has him listed as a CB. I understand that he was practicing as a back-up safety, but his real position was CB, wasn’t it? I know alot of folks were wanting to try him out at Safety…

He was running at backup safety for the last, what, couple games? Three?

Got toasted at corner during the first part of the season, but he’s been in center field or backing up at SS lately from what I recall.

My Hawkeye homerism is coming out here...

But I think Roth would add an awful lot to this defense. Basically, he’s a younger version of Vrabel—maybe not as athletic as MV in his prime, but close.

Imagine the hell that Tamba and Studie could wreak with Roth as their backup/wingman.

Donald Washington is utterly horrendous and he really looks like the worst pick of this draft. I shudder every time I see him on the field…

by EyePod on Nov 25, 2009 1:19 PM CST reply actions

He was raw coming out

He also came out early. We knew this when we drafted him. With good coaching I think he will be a good player for us. He is a project player and we knew that when we drafted him.

by Nick Britt on Nov 25, 2009 1:24 PM CST up reply actions

yeah, VERY raw, but VERY athletic

if he had stayed in college, and developed there… he could have been a 1st rounder next year.

So, he’s a project, for sure… but could end up being a good one

he's been good and bad

makes some plays, but gets burned… he was fooled pretty bad on that Hines Ward TD on Sunday, left him standing alone in the zone.

I think he was also beaten on a couple of the other big plays that have haunted the Chiefs this year.

Either way, it’s impossible for a CB to make EVERY play, and they will get burned sometimes… so I think Carr has done a decent job, and will likely stick around as the starter

CB can't make every play,

and neither can a safety. But two good CB’s and a great cover safety (Berry or Allen) could really reduce the big pass plays we give up……….(gazing at the office clock)

That Hines Ward play bothered me, too ...

But, as someone else pointed out, when he came off coverage on Ward it was because it looked like Big Ben was going to make a run for the endzone himself and Carr came up to help cover.

Yes, he still got beat on that play. But, it was only because he was aware of what was going on and was trying to get up to help prevent Ben from getting in.

I'm sure he'll be fine

again, i think that Pioli/Haley are VERY liberal in using IR for an injured player, rather than giving him time to recover and play this year.

I bet several of the guys the Chiefs put on IR could have been ready to play in 3-4 weeks… but KC didn’t want to wait for them… especially if their roles were being diminished, or if they weren’t playing that well
