Cassel vs. other 1-2 year QB starters, the Stats
Considering the line in front of him, the caliber of WR/TE he has to throw at, along with having 2.7 running behind him with no enthusiasm for 8 games, this year hasn't been easy for Cassel. Outside of holding on to the ball too long and a dropping completion percentage, which are issues, Cassel has actually done fairly well...if not simply "average" so far. Here are the stats:
2:1 TD/INT ratio (12/6)
-T16th TDs
-T7th INTs
55% completion percentage (26th in NFL among those who’ve played at least 7 games)
Sacked 34 times (2nd most in NFL next to Aaron Rodgers)
77.9 QB Rating (22nd in NFL)
--To compare with other young QBs--
Those in their second year of starting:
Joe Flacco has a QB Rating - 89.1 (12 TD/8 INT)
Matt Ryan has a QB Rating - 80.0 (16/12)
Those in their first years of starting:
Chad Henne – 77.7 (6/4)
Matthew Stafford - 66.9 (11/14)
Mark Sanchez has a QB Rating - 61.1 (10/16)
He compares quite favorably to all QBs above besides Flacco. Personally, things could be much worse...we could have drafted JaSuckus Russell (47.7 QB Rating) or Derek Anderson (36.2 QB Rating)

The thing that sucks about his rating is..
The sacks ruin it. It would probably be around Flacco’s if he wasnt sacked like 3 times a game.
When you fail to prepare, you prepare to fail.
exactly...I really feel as if he's been pretty decent outside of holding the ball too long.
I didn’t think he had it in him to throw the ball long after never doing all season so far…but he’s been pretty adept at hitting Chambers with the long ball.

The pump fake, and then the throw to Chambers
really caught the Steelers off guard. It wasn’t a “great” throw though, wasn’t “on the money” by a any means. But, he got it there!
Also, I can't believe how good Aaron Rodgers has been...
with getting sacked 42 times so far this season.

Yeah
Rodgers is one impressive SOB.

It's sad people are starting to throw "David Carr" into discussions about Rodgers because of the whole sack issues.
He really takes a beating and has been really pro about all the attention of Favre etc.
Keep in mind...
This is a guy that changed offensive systems a week before the season started, has had 5 different running backs, a revolving door of offensive lineman, absolutely useless tight ends and another revolving door at WR to deal with. despite all that he consistently goes out every week and does his job well. Once some more talent and stability is around him I think those numbers will go up dramatically.

Ive read a lot of negative things about Cassel here at AP
So its good to see that he is doing pretty well considering what he has to work with.
The thing i like most about Cassel and there is no stat for it, is his competitive nature. They guy gets smacked around all game long and he bounces right back up and continues to lead his team.
With some better protection and maybe another recieving weapon, Cassel will be a legit QB in this league for some time to come!
Don't blame me, I voted for content of character.
I'll admit it!
I was pissed at Cassel after the last SD game…PISSED!!!!! But, in all honesty, he has been decent, especially when consider all of the adversity he has had to go through. When comparing him to those other guys, it definitely shows that he has been fairly solid. I too hate the fact that he won’t get rid of the damn ball but, at least he doesn’t make a lot of stupid mistakes. I love the grit that he shows at the end of games, he looks like a comeback kid or some shit!!!
Matt Cassel is one tough hombre. I think he is going to be just fine once the offense is in place and has been for a while. I am a believer that the teams with great offenses are great because they have been together working within the same system for a long time. Pats, Colts, Saints, Chargers (did I just say Chargers???) Well, you get my point.
Looks like...
He’s working hard on improving. Early in games, when the plays are scripted, he has decent mechanics and gets rid of the ball better; but, he misses a lot of passes. Latter on his mechanics go to crap ( drops the ball down lower) and he completes more passes. He is not where he needs to be, but the future looks good. You can’t coach those intangibles.
Holding onto the ball too long........
Yes…..he needs to hold onto the ball to long, but when I really think about it I really think its a symptom that will get better next year. I mean they changed offensive systems so late this year, add on top of that the revolving door at receiver and he doesn’t have that chemistry to know where his receivers are going to be, and thats what you have to have to get the ball out of your hand as quick as we all want it to be. Where I do see him excel though is not throwing interceptions. You take out the Chargers game, which to me is an aberration (3 ints I believe), and look at his stats then. He may take more time, but he is sure of his throws and to me that is HUGE in the context of this years team, and something i really credit Haley for. This team cannot turn the ball over, just can’t. We have to win the turnover battle every game, and Cassell is a huge part in making that happen this year.
Has Cassell hit a homerun with me this yaer? Nope……but I am very happy with where he is at. Put it this way, I wouldn’t trade him for Flacco, and sure as hell wouldn’t trade him for Sanchez. I think next year he will not be elite, but he will be middle pack, and hopefully will progress into a top 10 close to top 5 qb by 2011 with the right weapons around him.
First sentence...
Should read yes he needs to get rid of it quicker….
This is a great point...
I tend to overlook at times the fact that he is new to our system and still getting used to not only it but his receivers and their tendencies.

the pump fake then pass to chambers was thrown way way blatantly short though
let’s be honest. If he hits that in stride it’s a touchdown. That’s a huge problem still with this team. It’s the difference between overtime and a second chance to lose and just getting the job done.
but... the pump fake helped get Chambers WIDE open
and, maybe he underestimated Chambers’s speed… he’s used to throwing to Bowe and Wade
haha

yeah, the protection was GREAT on that play
and on the other big plays… not a coincidence

conditioning, continuity & adrenaline
conditioning- has been a factor the whole season and it’s really starting to show now.
continuity- has been more elusive, but ironic because it has increased in spite of the roster shuffling
adrenaline- the key is to keep momentum after it has been established. Get these guys playing urgent & emotional the whole time, not just crunch time.
With his style of QB play, holding the ball as long as he does
I think he could get big results by really working on using the pump fake more.
Watch Big Ben use it all game long – it’s a huge part of his game.
I’m no QB coach, but my advice to Cassel is:
1) Use the pump fake as a weapon.
2) It’s ok to thrown the ball away SOMETIMES – especially on 1st down.
Cantaloupe? More like wontaloupe. Lazy ass melons.
agreed, but
he needs to start sooner after the snap……it’d be very effective to get a safety to bite on the slant then go over the top
