How do we get Chambers locked up for the future?
Since Chambers has arrived here this has been a different team, maybe it was the exit of 2.7. I am all for locking him up for a couple of years if we can, isn't next year due to be uncapped? Does this mean if we get him signed to an extension, and another team offers him more, he can walk? I am not a big stats person, but him, and Charles seem to be the ones to make this team go, I would like to see him stay. If we upgrade the o-line this season, get a new d-coordinator, this could be a dangerous team. We still need some more playmakers on defense, but I think we get the offense going, this defense as it stands could get us some key stops with a new coordinator. Todd is finding his way as a HC, I think he will do nothing but get better over time, anyways who thinks we should try to get Chambers locked up soon? Hey guys, we beat a good football team! Iam saying it now, Chambers has a big game at SD, and we make it three in a row! We will finish 7-9!! Go Chiefs!!

Set him up in the Hunt suite there at Arrowhead.
Somebody mentioned yesterday the thing has bedrooms. Don’t let him leave without an escort, and monitor his calls. Let’s see him go somewhere else then.
In all seriousness, I’m with you. Barring some sort of utter crash for the rest of the season (knock on wood), lock him up good. We all know we have the cap room, we may be learning why.

Ah my fellow Olathe person
We are smart folk ya know!:) I meant upgrading the o-line next season. Yeah, hire him a “bodyguard”, I agree monitor everything.
Good move by the Chiefs org, glad to see LJ gone.

*blinks*
I forgot for a moment we talked about being Olathe guys. Was trying to figure out where you knew that from, thinking I needed to be checking for being monitored for a bit.
I’m with you on the O-line. I’m not as big a hater of them as most, especially now that we have a threat back behind the line. I definately want to see Cassel get some more protection, and give JC some more help to get through there rather than have to do it himself.

Don't worry, not a stalker!:)
Yeah, imagine just a solid o-line, consistent gains, solid protection consistently, Cassel would be able to pick, and choose his targets, not run for his life.
Good move by the Chiefs org, glad to see LJ gone.

Contracts are contracts
if he signs an extension he’s ours uncapped year or not…
This is my signature line. It is full of awesome and win.

To me, it would depend on how much he was asking for.
He definitely brought a spark this year, but I’m not so sure I’d want to lock him in when I’m not sure how long the honeymoon would last. For a better-than-average receiver, which he IS, his current 2.5 million is a nice number. Beyond 3 million, though, I’d be looking for players who dominate more. He’s good, but he’s not dominant. Certainly better than the WR corps the Steelers were preparing for, but I’m not so sure that’s sayin’ a whole helluva lot.
No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.

I like the guy but this is the first time ill give LJ credit, by getting cut, he changed the atmosphere in the locker room from bad to good...

I don't think it's farfetched to suggest that LJ AND Bowe going missing gave the offense a real spark.
Just getting LJ off the field, lifted a pervasive sense of futility I’ve had for YEARS (even during his huge season), because the stats LJ and TG were getting were empty stats in terms of winning tough games against top competition. And, frankly, the speed, quickness, and get-after-it mentality from Charles, Long, Chambers and Wade gives me a whole different feeling – I think it’s called HOPE.
Sorry for D-Bowe man-love victims. I like what he can do, but as a big ‘n’ tall contributor off the bench, red zone specialist, mayhap, or changeup between the 20s on 1st ‘n’ 2nd or 3rd-and-short. But the other 3 receivers named get better depth on their routes, and just generally stretch the field vertically on a more consistent basis. That’s more like game-winning football than occasional highlight material in otherwise futile efforts in terms of the W-L column.
No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.

You did call it a while back that the offense would look different without Bowe. I don’t think my brain was ready to process that hypothesis back then, but wow good call man. It’ll be interesting to see the production of the WR over the next three games……

Thx, Hail. Not all my remarks are well-received.
But I try to go by what my eyes tell me, and sometimes I see things differently than the majority.
I don’t see him as a #1 WR, personally. Maybe a Keyshawn Johnson kind of WR, who’s a big part of winning, but the Bucs weren’t in contention until they got more speed on the field. The first year they were contending for the SB, their only speed WR was taken out of the game by (dirty play?) the Packers (‘96/’97?), and suddenly the amount of field the Packers needed to cover seemed like it was cut in half, and they won goin’ away. He’ll make some of those “How can you stop THAT?” plays, same as Keyshawn, but not consistently open enough to keep the chains moving.
I see it occasionally in highlights, where he’s just not creating quick separation. Facing the jam, he seems to be running through molasses, instead of punishing the DB for being foolish enough to let D-Bowe get his hands on him (with his size and power he oughta be able to deliver the hit on the DB, rather than get tied up, but he doesn’t seem to). But long as I’ve been flattered into babbling overmuch, back to the Bucs comparison…
I have had that same Bucs-without-speed feeling from the Chiefs for quite a long while, and that feeling is lifted when Chambers and Long are part of the equation. Chambers down the field and makes the catch. Chambers on the crossing route and makes the catch. Long catching everything in HIS reach. Even the miss by Chambers in OT, he wasn’t THAT far off in timing his jump. Anyhoo, just a sense that big plays off the pass are a much higher probability proposition, with those two. Wade’s not far behind. Bradley’s still on the rise, but, for one reason or another, the play fails to connect by inches. He STILL could catch fire, at some point, but after a while, your thumb wears out from spinnin’ the wheel on your Bic.
All this being said, I think the BIGGEST difference (and I’m always on the “fix the line, great WR, and journeyman RB” side of the argument) were the plays made by Jamaal Charles and the seriousness of the JC threat gave Cassel some of the best looks he’s had all year. Cassel doesn’t get many of those, and he doesn’t miss on many of those. But unlike other games, when those rare opportunities DID arise, Chambers and Long were money at the other end.
No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.

I'm for it...
I like the starting WR corp of Bowe, Chambers and Long. Wade and Bradley are both going to be free agents also.
Lee Evans is going to be a free agent and could fill the Chambers role if we are unable to resign him. Evans is also 3 years younger, and both have the speed to stretch the defense.

Evans would want more money than Chambers I guaruntee you that.
He would be a good get, but not for our management. I hope we are more stingy than that. I think we’ll pick up a receiver with a late pick and don’t see us not resigning Chambers. Also, If Bradley doesn’t start producing things are going to go downhill for him fast. I’m starting to get a little pissed at him and I am pretty easy going on the Chiefs this year (compared to a lot of guys out there wink wink).

Bradley had a nice 22-yarder, but I agree. My patience is wearing thin with him, too.
But maybe the team as a whole has reached a tipping point, where they’ve found a style of play and a positive sense of themselves and each other. Bradley seems to have the entire tool kit, but at the key moment, it’s like he realizes there are a million people watching, or the ball is just where he has trouble getting the handle, or (earlier) doesn’t seem to know where the yardsticks are. Football IQ/Ferocity stuff.
No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.

Still a little early in my book
Yeah, he’s made huge contributions, but can he do it for the rest of the season? Time will tell.

Chambers should have a couple of good years left.
A two year deal would be great. It’s been nice to see him give the Chiefs the speed to stretch the field. We can look for another speedy guy to replace him as he ages.

Give him a plus 2 or 3 year dear for a marginal price and bring in some fresh legs through the draft...

This is how you would keep him motivated,
give him a reasonable salary, make his contract incentive based. I think an incentive based contract would keep him hungry. Show him that the incentives could be there by making considersble upgrades on the offensive side of the ball.
Good move by the Chiefs org, glad to see LJ gone.

Mix in some extra compensation for services rendered, depending on just how well he (and the Chiefs) does (do) down the stretch.
I’m not one to break the bank, but I’d make a point of making some sort of gesture toward him when I didn’t have to, like after bargain is struck, throw another 100 K (or something 6-figurish) on top. In NFL terms, VERY small potatoes, but showing a little goodwill earns 3 times that amount of good will in return. When you get starting quality at middle-of-the-pack prices, you can be more generous than you have to be, and the guy comes to work because he wants to, rather than because he has to, like LJ (or even TG or BW). He’ll do more of the little things and more little things will go right for you on the field of play (the invisible hand).
I think that’s kind of Pioli’s style, with the bottom-of-the-roster churning. Not the same thing, quite, but every time you turn up a gem, you can treat a guy very well, and still come out ahead of teams that are spending #1 picks on PONeed and chasing after top FAs at too many positions.
Along the lines of the larger discussion, and looking at the last offseason, I think Pioli’s unlikely to make more than one or two really aggressive FA moves, and will have all kinds of hedges (no reaches for yo-yo players like McGlockton, Williams, or Derrick Alexander with high price tag – has to be minimal downside risk). Reason I’m saying this is any talk (by others) about this or that big-name FA WRs is against a backdrop involving possible Wilfork scenario. I can see one PONeed being addressed by a big-time contract, but the rest will be quiet moves, such as securing Chambers for reasonable for a reasonable length of time – as un-splashy as possible.
I agree that incentives are smart for any contract, but I kinda don’t like the phrase “incentive-laden” contract always coming up in the context of players with asterisks next to their names. Hard to explain. I guess I’m saying positive reinforcement, rather than negative. With incentives, the psychology is almost like the organization is betting against the player doing well, trying to protect themselves from his fuck-ups, rather than something to double the player’s pleasure when things go well on the field.
No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.
