Charlie Weis already offered the Chiefs 2010 OC job?

This site claims to have breaking news that, if Charlie Weis is fired by Notre Dame, Scott Pioli has already offered him the Chiefs offensive coordinator job for 2010. I'm not sure how creditable this site is, but if this is true, Id be happy about it. Yes Haley called a terrific game in the second half yesterday, but I would like for him to focus on coaching the entire team. Even if he remains the QB coach next season, its still a step in the right direction.

Link: Footballcoachscoop.com/scoop.html

Making this move, would add another super bowl offensive mind to the coaching staff. It will also give the team more creditability with players in free agency. I also hope we pursue Romeo Crennel, yet another super bowl coach that can be added to the staff. If these two guys come in, expect a couple of things in the offseason...

-We will make a major push for Vince Wilork, if he is not franchised

-We will probably draft WR Golden Tate in the 2nd round (if available)

-More premier free agents make their way to KC, than in prior years

Yes I think the Chiefs need an Offensive Coordinator next season to allow Haley to be just the head coach. Is Weis the answer, I’m not sure. There are a few names out there who might be offered the job and while The GM does the hiring it has to match up with Haley’s game plan. Sounds like this could be a good thing but it is the match that has me wondering.

is it me? or isn't about time the Lamar Hunt trophy belonged to His team?

This Chiefs team is closer to a new expansion team than it is a playoff contender, your expectations should match that.

I’d love Wiess, Crennel, Wilfork and Tate to be in KC next year!

Not sure I trust that site, and it’s pretty early to speculate… but, yeah… I’d be up for it

I'm still leaning at what someone said a week or two ago about Haley grooming

Carthon or someone on staff already to take over. I wouldn’t be disappointed by any means with Weis, just kinda blahh on the whole thing right now.

The man’s been a failure as an OC at two different stops. No thanks on having him do that job here. I’d rather have Weis.

Hell, I’d rather have Paul Hackett (and Hackett ain’t good).

He Got Fired By The Browns Midseason 2006

His offense was ranked dead last in the NFL and much of the criticism was centered around his playcalling. They improved after he left. He’s basically produced nothing in any of his stops as either a position coach or coordinator…he’s milked his time as a Parcells player for a pretty long career.

I agree 100%.

I really think wies would be an excellent choice, but this needs to be Haley’s decision. It is a mistake for the GM to force HC to hire coordinators. I think Crennel and Weis would be excellent choices and would help Haley greatly, but Haley needs to be involved in this decision.

I agree too. It's Haley team, up or down, and he needs to be able to make his own

decisions. Maybe he would rather have a good active QB coach that assisted him but the final signal calling would still be his. Haley is just getting started and needs to make his own decisions.

Weis damn sure isn’t going back to Notre Dame next year…not after losing to Navy twice in three years (at home). Haley did a better job but he still needs an OC. If he can work with Charlie Weis, then I’d be happy with Weis as the hire. The man appeared to be a capable NFL OC with the Patriots and I think he’d be a good fit here…he just isn’t cut out to be a head coach.

And he doesn’t win shit. He also loses games to teams that talent alone dictates he shouldn’t be losing to. In fact, Notre Dame dumbed down their schedule this year just to improve their record and they’re still not good.

Weis just isn’t capable of running his own program, especially at the college level. It’s a whole different ballgame trying to coach college kids, who have much more than just football among their obligations. I think Weis would be fine if he were just in charge of the offense.

Yup

That ranked right up there in the echelon of “worst extensions ever”. The previous Notre Dame AD gave him a 10 year extension during his first season there after (as Whitlock very accurately noted) Weis didn’t win a single game he wasn’t expected to win. And he’s been making the Irish pay for it ever since.

I'm throwing the BS flag on this report.

Weis still is employed. He still has a game to coach. It would be beyone un-professional for either the Chiefs to approach, or Weiss to listen to any conversation like the one being reported.

There is a lot of wishful thinking, and past connections feeding these rumors, but at this time that’s all they appear to be.

Bah

It’s not unprofessional. That’s football. College coaches get approached for jobs all the time. And considering the speculation about his future, I doubt Notre Dame cares. The players know that Weis probably isn’t coming back next year. If the Chiefs talked to him, it’s not much more of a distraction.

Apples To Oranges

The NFL and the NCAA are two different organizations. Player tampering within the NFL has no relevance to an NFL team approaching a college coach.

Moderator - Arrowhead Pride

by UCrawford on Nov 23, 2009 12:23 PM CST up reply actions

Tampering is tampering

Weis is under contract. If the Chiefs were sued for tampering who cares if the lawsuit comes from an NFL or a NCAA team.

That being said how did Arkansas not get sued by Atlanta for negotiating with Bobby Petrino while he was under contract? Or Nick Saban with the Dolphins? Hmmmm, it appears this might be the first time I’m wrong about something on AP

Johnnie Morton: The Man. The Myth. The Legend.

by craig in calgary on Nov 23, 2009 12:38 PM CST up reply actions

An NFL Team Calling An NCAA Coach Isn't Tampering

Tampering as far as the NFL goes is something that can only occur within the NFL. It’s about maintaining competitive balance.

If the Chiefs were sued for tampering who cares if the lawsuit comes from an NFL or a NCAA team.

There’s nothing inherently wrong with one organization trying to poach employees from another organization. Happens all the time in the real world. The NCAA has nothing to do with the NFL. The only way the Chiefs would be wrong is if the NFL has rules against contacting NCAA coaches in-season, which to my knowledge they don’t.

That being said how did Arkansas not get sued by Atlanta for negotiating with Bobby Petrino while he was under contract?

Because the NCAA is under no restriction from contacting NFL coaches in-season because the NCAA and the NFL are two completely different organizations. It would be a frivolous lawsuit. The only person Atlanta could sue would be Petrino…they had no basis for suing Arkansas. Same deal with Saban.

Moderator - Arrowhead Pride

by UCrawford on Nov 23, 2009 1:03 PM CST up reply actions

Basically

The Falcons could have sued Petrino for violating the terms of his contract (depending on the terms of that contract) or the Dolphins could have sued Saban for violating the terms of his contract (depending on the terms of his contract) but those teams have no basis to sue colleges for attempting to hire their coaches away. The same is true of the NCAA getting their coaches poached by the NFL. Neither is bound by the other’s rules.

Usually a coaching contract

has certain buyouts that apply to a guy taking other NFL positions.

by burntorangehorn on Nov 24, 2009 8:13 AM CST up reply actions

That's What I Was Saying

Unless the terms of a contract deal with it, though, there’s nothing unethical or illegal with an NFL team poaching a college team’s coach or vice versa. And even if the contract is written up to include that possibility, it’s the individual who’s liable for damages, not the team trying to hire him.

I'm sure I'm in the minority here, but.....

I voted for Haley to stay the OC, or maybe promote someone like Carthon to OC but Haley is still the one calling the plays. I agree he needs to lesson his duties (hire a QB coach, for sure) but I think it would be a mistake to hire a new OC that would come in and want to teach a new playbook. They are just now finding their rhythm with Haley and getting comfortable with his system. I think we would be better off not changing things in the offseason, just get Haley a little more help so he can delagate more.

Me too as I stated above. Haley is his own man and should do it however he wants.

He doesn’t really need an OC. Haley’s not going to be standing there and waiting for someone else to call the plays. Just not his nature. He just needs a good assistant, maybe a QB coach, to stand with him, suggest plays and back him up.

by jcox31mc on Nov 23, 2009 2:21 PM CST up reply actions

I'm with you guys.

And I don’t think there needs to be any hard-and-fast or conventional division of labor. Just something that works for the coaches and team.

by hmills110 on Nov 23, 2009 7:40 PM CST up reply actions

Not Sure

Haley has made it clear he wants things his way and I’m not sure Weis would fit. Weis would want control of the offense as his resume backs up so personally I do not see this happening. Haley might bring in someone to to help him and right now I think that person is going to be Carthon buut we will see. (Its bound to be a YES boy, Gailey got the boot and so will anyone else whos not on with Haleys way).

by kcchiefstd on Nov 23, 2009 12:11 PM CST reply actions

It doesn't have to be a yes man

There just has to be agreement on what system to run. Letting go of Gailey was about a dispute over what system to run. The firing set us back this year. We had to put in a new system on the fly and teh early results were miserable. It does put us ahead of the game for next year. We won’t have to install a new system this offseason because we’re experiencing that pain now.

I don’t much care who they decide to hire as OC so long as it’s a proven playcaller who is comfortable in this system.

This is my signature line. It is full of awesome and win.

Not sure about that.

Take about 100 yards off the top for the INT return. Take another 100 off for other turnovers, and the numbers look reasonable. “Normal” interpretation of stats leads many to foolish conclusions, not that you’re being foolish, here, but I think that stats have more meaning when all things are otherwise equal, and it was CLEAR coming into this game that things were NOT equal, and the Chiefs needed tactics and strategy that didn’t come off the shelf in a box tied with a ribbon.

If after five years you can’t win at Notre Dame, you’re not that good of a football coach. And the Notre Dame fans and administration know it…Weis is toast.

Fun fact about Weis

In 2002, Weis underwent gastric bypass surgery, after which he lost 90 lb (41 kg; 6.4 st) from his top weight of 350 lb (160 kg; 25 st).3435 When asked why he underwent surgery, Weis stated he was afraid he would “drop dead” from obesity.36 Due to complications from the surgery, Weis spent two weeks in a coma and nearly died. Weis was so close to death that he reportedly received the Catholic last rites.37 Weis later sued the doctors who performed the surgery for malpractice and lost. A major reason cited for the jury’s decision is that Weis ignored doctors’ advice and pushed to have the operation done quickly, rather than going through a recommended six-week preoperative program.38

1998 Jets 4th

2000 Pats 22nd
2001 Pats 19th
2002 Pats 21st

Has a little more force behind him because he had back to back top 10 defenses, but his record isn’t great either.

2000 Browns 26th
2001 Pats 24th
2002 Pats 23rd
2003 Pats 7th
2004 Pats 9th
2005 Browns 16th As head coach
2006 Browns 27th As head coach
2007 Browns 30th As head coach
2008 Browns 26th As head coach

And you have to give at least some of the credit for the Patriot years to Bellichick who is an outstanding defensive coach.

So while I am not as pessimistic about Crennel as I am Weiss, I don’t know I would be doing cartwheels and stuff if he came on board.

Or Robinson?

I'm OK with Clancy.

I like his style.

No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.

I'd rather have a DC who calls 'em the way _I_ see 'em,

and isn’t just a mediocre beneficiary of superior talent. With the lack of speed in the KC safeties, if Clancy were calling plays the way everyone could understand, the Chiefs would be at 0-10.

No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.

Bullshit. I'll swear to my dying day that somebody stuck me with that swine after I passed out.

I’ve just seen good coordinators lose traction due to poor GM, and mediocre coordinators made famous by great players.

No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.

I'm Not All That Excited About Crennel Either

Honestly, I didn’t think the Patriots defense was all that when he was in charge and I’m of the opinion that most of the people who work for Belichick are riding Belichick’s coattails rather than possessing a lot of innate talent on their own.

It’s a long list of coaches who worked for Billy B then flamed out once they didn’t work for him. Long enough to make me wary about the Chiefs hiring anyone who worked for the man.

I'm not a fan of yardage as a Defensive ranking

During the Crennel years in NE his Ds were exceptional in the scoring category.

2001 6th
2002 17th
2003 1st
2004 2nd

This is my signature line. It is full of awesome and win.

Yeah

I was initially interested in seeing Weis com in (particularly with Haley’s play-calling), and at least somewhat interested in seeing Crennel too…but the more I think about it, the more I’d rather have some fresh up-and-coming talent take over the coordinator positions. Who’s going to be more motivated to work the 15 hr days needed, older retreads who already have millions in the bank or younger guys out to prove themselves?

I need to go find the reference

but last winter sometime I read a study that showed that HC do better in their 1st ten years than any time thereafter (or something like that). This is why I was hoping we’d do exactly what you are saying and pick up a coordinator (Haley) rather than Shanahan or some other retread HC.

The two retread guys I’d be willing to gamble on are Cowher and Belichick.

I’m all for the same strategy for the coordinator slots.

I've Seen That Before As Well

Actually, you just need to tally up coaches’ records and it bears that out. Don Shula, Tom Landry, Dan Reeves, and Bill Parcells are all examples of this. Generally, if a HC can’t produce a Super Bowl in his first 10 years, he’s extremely unlikely to do so afterwards.

I've not really paid attention to who might be available

As far as offense goes, I like the design of a lot of Haley’s plays. I just don’t like him calling them right now while he’s trying to learn how to be a head coach. :)

I would have no problem if he promoted one of the guys on his staff to call plays with him giving heavy input.

As for DC, I’ll have to wait until after the season and see what options are available. I don’t like talking up guys that there might be no chance of coming here.

by ChiefDJ on Nov 23, 2009 7:29 PM CST up reply actions

I just wonder if Al Saunders

had better offensive rankings as O Coord? And I think he is somewhat available…

Winning begins with Attitude - Haley and Pioli will be winners in KC!

I'll forever be a Chiefs fan! Only God himself could take that away from me, but when I get to my great reward, I'll rejoin two bigger fans, my Mom and Dad.

That might be the type of guy we are looking for :)

How close are we to giving up the most yards in a season?

Weis would bring his own system, right?

Are we trying to set a record for number of offensive systems used in a 12 month period of time?

Toby is in HR, which technically means he works for corporate, so he's really not a part of our family. Also, he's divorced, so he's really not a part of his family.

As much as the current FO/CS loves its connection hires..

I think they’ll have to step out of the box to get a solid hire from someone they don’t know wing it on a position coach from a winning program…

I’m talking a Keith Butler (LB coach for the Steelers) type hire promoted to DC or something along those lines…

by butchcassidy on Nov 24, 2009 6:40 AM CST reply actions

THats off topic I don't really want Weiss as OC...

I was for it a while back but the more I see it the less I like it…I don’t know something just doesn’t click with me…I think maybe Charlie could be a decent QB coach though but I doubt he’d take such a position…

by butchcassidy on Nov 24, 2009 6:42 AM CST up reply actions

Well

The nice thing about that would be that he wouldn’t have to care about money considering the buyout ND will have to pay him. :)

But I think someone will hire him as an OC if the Chiefs don’t. He flamed out as a head coach, but his reputation as a coordinator is still good and guys can get by for years on reputation (even if the results don’t support it).

RE

I have followed that site for a few years, footballscoop.com. Their not 100% accurate but once in a wwhile they are locked in on some insider stuff. But for the most part they their a blog for informed speculation, ie. “we hear Lew perkins is getting ready to make a move”. Anybody in the KC metro area could tell you that much..

imagine

if weis comes in drafts golden tate and maybe even drags jeff samardzija from chicago over here? wow.

Give Todd Haley a full regular and off-season to build Bowe's Cassel, and we will all wreap the benefits...

by CHIEFER on Nov 24, 2009 11:59 AM CST reply actions

I have no idea about the link However I heard similar things from the four letter

John Clayton was saying that Weis to KC was a big possibility. Weis not only knows Pioli but he is connected to Haley. Money would not be an issue because the guy gets a ridiculous buyout from ND. As well, if he got fired now the Chiefs could snatch him up now, let him work as a consultant and learn how his offense and Haley’s offenses are similar so he can hit the ground running going in to next season.

by tebunker on Nov 27, 2009 12:48 PM CST reply actions

Look for Haley to be deeply involved on offense.

Personally, I’d rather see a younger guy come in @ QB coach, and maybe have an expanded(ing) role in OC duties. But if he survives this year, and feels he’s found how to mange all his duties, it wouldn’t surprise me at all if Haley kept his hand on the tiller on offense.

No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.
