Can the Chiefs run the table?

Any consistency on offense and timely stops on D and it is possible. We got the Chargers, Donks twice, the Bills, the Browns and Cincy. Cincy may have their position wrapped up by the time we play them but they got a backup running back that will try to show he still has tread on the tires. If we can win out, Denver and SD have tough schedules the rest of the way a division title is not impossible.

Star-divide

I know it is way to early to get the kind of hope up but the Steelers didn't really play bad. Their errors were forced errors, they were not just bad mistakes.  The Chiefs D was able to get pressure on him and had they wrapped Ben up a couple of times, this game wouldn't have been close.

The sad thing is that this wasn't even an especially impressive game as far as execution. The offense was horrible the first 2 and a half quarters of the game. And the D gave up 515 total yards. 114 rushing and 401 passing. TOP, we had half what the Steelers had. Add in the terrible game management by Haley, if this team puts it together they can beat some good teams.

I'm not saying.....I' m just sayin....

Predictions for 2009:

The Chiefs will regret cutting LJ

Bowe's numbers regress due to lack of decent QB play.

The D gets better in the second half but still is plagued by big plays

Cassel looks more like the guy Pioli almost cut in the '08 preseason instead of the franchise QB he hoped he would be when he traded him for

Chiefs 3-13

Exactly

This is the kind of thinking that will lose us games

Good point.

The fans thinking crazily about winning the division will cause the Chiefs to lose games.

I used to work with an old man that told me. Son, every workplace has a dumbass, if you don't have one where you work, then I'm afraid you're it.

I meant if the Players thought like that

Only focusing on going the entire season undefeated. They need to focus ALL of their attention on each opponent, each week. Not thinking ahead to the end of the season

You always find a way to be negative...

The toughest wins would be SD and Cinci… The rest are very winnable.

Pretty hard to believe

He STILL finds a way to bitch after we knock off the defending champs. Ah well, he has his own viewpoint.

Point being

We beat the Champs without our “A” game, that isn’t bitching.

We have "A" spurts

If they can put it together for a full 60 it will be an ’A" game.

I'll give you that

Thats the thing that drives you crazy about this team.

Like on offense, we had 47 total yards on offense in the 1st half. FORTY SEVEN!

All of the offense came on a couple drives in the 2nd half and overtime.

They look like High Schoolers out there for 90% of the time. But when they DO turn it on, they can look pretty darn good.

by ChiefDJ on Nov 22, 2009 5:29 PM CST up reply actions

Yes, we have an "A" game

Every team does. It’s finding it and executing….and this was the first game in a long long time that happened. Their confidence is high, since they “felt” how good it was to win against a strong opponent. Now it’s repeatability in doing that…but again, it’s the first step.

I thought “just” getting to O.T. was pretty impressive considering coming back from being down.

The O.T. play was something I haven’t seen in many years.Especially after losing the coin toss.

There is no way I would call today an A game

They had a couple good drives. The rest of the time they looked as bad as all year.

The offense needs to find a way of playing like those couple drives all game long.

by ChiefDJ on Nov 22, 2009 5:38 PM CST up reply actions

If they could play a full game like they did in the second half

then we have an “A” game. You don’t need perfection on every drive

by bonesjackson on Nov 22, 2009 5:40 PM CST up reply actions

Well, I'll say this...I don't split it up on half's/quarters

So, to me the way they came back, stuck with it, didn’t lose doing something stupid at the end of regulation and winning in OT…that’s an “A” game in my book.

I would call playing the "A" game

…by coming back being down, not losing the final minutes by giving up a play, losing the OT toss, holding your own on Defense and then winning the game.

That to me was an “A” game against a strong team. Our definitions seem to not be the same, and that’s fine.

That's fine

i still believe we beat one of the better teams in the NFL with a “D” first half and an “A” second half. If we can get that first half a little bit better, this team could be good enough to beat anyone.

By beating the Steelers, they showed they ARE good enough to beat anyone.

Doesn’t mean they’re going to be favored a whole lot.

What I liked was the ebb and flow of the game. The farther into it they got, the harder it seemed to get for PIT. Chiefs finished strong. I really, really like that.

I’ve seen PIT start slow in games, too. But as the game wore on, their superior physicality started dominating the other team. This was not the case today. Very cool to see.

No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.

by hmills110 on Nov 22, 2009 6:31 PM CST up reply actions

Wasn't being negative

Trying to make the point that if the Chiefs offense was consistent, the D was a little better, and better coaching this team can play with anyone and that is damn positive if you ask me!

I'd Say No

It was a big win today against a good team, but let’s also not overlook that it’s a team that’s had problems finishing people off this year. We can still pick up a couple more wins, but I don’t think there’s any way the Chiefs run the table.

I'm still mathematically in it for 8-8 and contending for the division, baby!

Ain’t sayin’ it’s real likely, but, other than overestimating the secondary, and their not stealing a couple games in the early stretch, the last two wins are in line with what I thought would likely happen.

I'd say you haven't thought this through (with all due respect)

Let’s look at the remaining games:

San Diego -weak division and they lost against this Pittsburgh Team 38-28

Bronco’s (play twice) – weak division and their starting QB had his bell rung. They aren’t doing too well against SD as we speak.

Buffalo -‘nuf said. They’re already screaming a total restructure and it’s not even the end of the year.

Browns – Hello. Just lost against Detroit (allow time for crickets to chirp here).

Bengals -playing well.Toughest remaining game on the schedule. Our bonus: they have 2.7

Chiefs DO NOT have a team that gave up on their yelling coach…that would be Mangino’s KU. Through the whole game I was thinking….How are they going to screw this up?

Instead the players stepped up. Yes, the Studebakers and Charles et.al. This without our weapon Bowe. Secondly, we get the Chargers cast off who visibly had the wind knocked out of him, came back and scored again.

So, if you don’t think we have the wherewithal to beat anyone after holding our own after playing 60 minutes, losing the coin toss and then coming back and playing smart football then I don’t know what to tell you.

I don’t want to harp on this point, but the Steelers are the top 3 teams in the NFL right now and we held our own….correction: respectably held our own.

that it’s POSSIBLE and the probability just shot up after this win against an 8-1 team.

It's okay.

I bet they wish they had been 8-1 too, having swept the Bengals.

by Archyrr on Nov 22, 2009 5:20 PM CST up reply actions

Yup

They’ve been struggling this year. I think it’s mainly because of the o-line and Parker’s health issues. Mendenhall’s showing promise but he hasn’t established himself as being as good as FWP yet.

And the Steelers actually have a losing record in their own division. They’re a good football team and this is a big win, but it’s not the 2008 Steelers.

On The Schedule

San Diego – It’s winnable, but I think we drop this one. While LT is falling apart, their defense has been showing signs of life of late and they’ve still got Rivers.

Broncos – solid defense, good RBs, good o-line, very good receivers. This is the kind of team that gives us fits. I don’t see us picking up wins here.

Buffalo – addition by subtraction…they dumped Dick Jauron and instilled Ryan Fitzpatrick as starting QB over Trent “I Suck” Edwards. Their defense already looked much improved this week. Even odds on a win.

Browns – yeah, I’m penciling it in as a win. This is just a rotten football team on all levels and their coach is going to get fired.

Bengals – they’re for real and Benson should be back soon enough. And they’ve still got a decent RB in Bernard Scott. I think this is a loss.

All the games are winable

Cincy being the toughest I think in everyone’s book. I am hoping we have a big time pass rush going and they got their seeding locked up at that point so they don’t risk Carson.

SD- I’m still not on the SD/Rivers bandwagon. I think he’s play has been overrated. The running game has actually done better (statistically speaking) than the passing game.

I know it sounds weird, but it’s perception. I thought that for example The Saints were pass-happy, but came to find out they run the ball 63% of the time (from last weeks numbers)…that’s the league average. SD isn’t really using Rivers as much as they have from a drop ’n pass perspective.

Bengals – yes, for real. But honestly there is something about them that just makes me think they aren’t in it to win it. Gut feeling here, because their stats are very good. I still think at home…we can beat them…in Cincy…not so much.

Buffallo – I disagree whole-heartedly on this. They’re cooked. Falling apart. Just poor management.

The Raiders Without JaMarcus Russell As Starting QB

< the Raiders with FatMarcus Russell as starting QB.

Living out west where I’m unfortunately exposed to much more Raiders coverage, I cannot emphasize enough what an anchor that guy was around the Raiders’ neck. Much as I hate to say it, they’re not really that bad of a football team…their record is a testament to the damage that a QB who performs below replacement level can do. I suspect the Raiders will actually be going on a bit of a run with Gradkowski. Now that they actually have someone who can hit a WR more than 10 yards downfield with marginal consistency.

Six years of drafting in the top 10 will give you some good talent

Even if you squander a lot of it by making lousy picks (Russel, Heyward-Bey, etc).

by ChiefDJ on Nov 22, 2009 7:02 PM CST up reply actions

In Defense Of Heyward-Bey

It’s pretty tough for him to demonstrate anything when his QB consistently has trouble hitting open receivers (and doesn’t really seem to care). Any target further downfield than a Zach Miller route was usually a miss.

At last! Someone other than myself actually MENTIONING the possibility of winning this weak division.

It’d be a lot better probability if they’d stolen the Ravens game and won the Raiders game.

A GOOD thing, though, about NOT winning those early contests was there was NEVER, at ANY POINT, any self-deception about how good they were/are. Now if this win doesn’t go to their heads, we’ll maybe have something to work with.

Two things I very much liked about today’s game:

  1. The passing game getting it done.
  2. The ILBs playing downhill.

No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.

I think I actually saw a blitz run in conjunction with locking-up at the line on the perimeter.

I still would like to see MORE of that, but maybe the KC DBs give up too much by getting their hands on the WRs like that. It might explaini why we see cushion more often than in-your-face.

we'll probably finish with 5 or 6 wins

And 5 or 6 wins is a hell of a lot of progress, considering how low this franchise was just 10 months ago. We all wanted more right away, but we’re making progress and it’s going to take time.

Next year, we’ll win 8 or 9, but we’ll be a young team with more pieces in place. And we’ll continue to put more pieces in place every year. We WILL get there.

Next time we get rolled and have a crappy game, don’t overreact, remember that we beat the Steelers, and most importantly in the big picture, the franchise is turned around and is pointed in the right direction for the first time in a long time.
