Live this one up Kansas City Chiefs fans! The Chiefs beat the Steelers in over time!

This is easily the Chiefs best win since the 2006 season.

I'm jumping up and down! CHIEFS! CHIEFS! CHIEFS!

Here are some quick post game thoughts I've been putting together:

The Good

  • Hello Andy Studebaker! The former sixth round pick had two picks of his own against the Steelers. The second one went for 94-yards and a near touchdown.
  • Jamaal Charles, while not putting up huge numbers, is such a clear advantage over Larry Johnson's lazy style of running. Charles rushed for
  • Speaking of Jamaal Charles, he topped the play of his career last week with a kickoff return for a TD to open the game. Even if Charles is only able to add plays like that a few times a year, those plays can win games for the Chiefs. Again, a huge advantage over Larry Johnson.
  • Thank you for Chris Chambers. He'll be invaluable as Dwayne Bowe sits. Too bad he hurt what appeared to be his shoulder on his big catch on the Chiefs' tying drive.
  • Improved play calling against the Steelers. Even a few plays that nobody expects goes a long way.
  • In the fourth quarter, Mike Brown holding on to Ben Roethlisberger's jersey on third down while the rest of the Chiefs' D jumped on the QB was huge. It may have been the play of the game.
  • Derrick Johnson's fourth quarter sack was amazing!
  • Jovan Belcher made a HUGE play on over time when he stopped Rashad Mendenhall on the outside for a three-yard loss.

The Bad

  • The Chiefs almost sacked Ben Roethlisberger that it was frustrating. The Pittsburgh QB almost magically escaped the Chiefs' pass rush at least a half dozen times. Even one sack could have made the difference between a punt and a score.

The Ugly

  • The Chiefs pass protection, as usual. The Chiefs gave up 5 sacks to the Steelers.

Way I See It

It’ll stay parked for the rest of the year. I figure an increase in wins plus a win over the defending SB champs is sufficient improvement to merit him keeping his job…for now. :)

Nah

If it had been a win over the Browns as his third, then maybe…but I think a win over the Steelers with this team was a demonstration that he can get them playing better than their talent level.

I will also say that I hope we can continue to see a more subdued Haley on the sidelines as we did during Pittsburgh. I thought the game management was improved and that happens when your coach has his head in the game instead of focused on bitching out players on the sidelines. Not saying he should become Herm…but I think this team performs better once he lets off on the choke chain a bit.

By the way, the stats don’t really reflect it, but I thought Cassel did an outstanding job.

Well one thing you have to say about Haley...

the Chiefs have mostly mistake free football. Players may drop balls, and they may line up out of place occasionally, but they don’t make a lot of penalties and they really haven’t turned the ball over either. I think that says a lot about Haley. So if this continues, I think it will be very interesting to see how they play for him when they are more familiar with the system, and have better players to run the system.

This space for rent.

by bh13 on Nov 22, 2009 3:31 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

DEFINATELY better that 2.7

Heres an interesting tidbit..

Larry Johnson..week 2..vs the 29th ranked run defense..24 carries..78 yards, 3.25 average..against a team that allows 155 yards rushing per game.

As we know, against Oakland, Jamaal outdid LJ when he had his chance in week 7. But heres the real interesting note..

Jamaal Charles..week 11..vs the 1st ranked run defense. 17 carries, 58 yards, 3.41 average..against a team that allows 69.3 rushing yards per game.

JC..against the best run defense in the league..out did LJ’s performance against the #29th ranked run defense.

I'll Be Curious To See What Johnson Does For Cincinnati In His Stint

I’m expecting more of the same, even though they’ve got a pretty decent o-line.

I cant help

but thinking about that also!

Honestly, I dont think LJ will do shit with his decent OL..but I cant say it would surprise me if he does well.

But if I had to bet on it..I’d definitely say he’ll just be “more of the same” like you said.

by Petey14 on Nov 22, 2009 4:10 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

So far

LJ has 2 carries for 5 yds with a long of 8 (then a loss of 3). Sounds about right…

by mightykc on Nov 22, 2009 4:41 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

He's Washed Up

People can blame the line or the playcalling or whatever, but he’s been in pronounced slide ever since the end of the 2006 season. Herm broke him and age is finishing him off. Even a good o-line can’t compensate sufficiently for when the ability’s just not there.

Wow!

Predictions for 2009:

The Chiefs will regret cutting LJ

Bowe's numbers regress due to lack of decent QB play.

The D gets better in the second half but still is plagued by big plays

Cassel looks more like the guy Pioli almost cut in the '08 preseason instead of the franchise QB he hoped he would be when he traded him for

THANK YOU SAN DIEGO

Chambers is the shot in the arm that got us through the game

(and studebaker as well of course!)

grab a bucket of guts and PLAY (in the sweet nectar of the endzone)

nfl is looking for that yao ming money
i thought it would come from some huge mongolian wrestler playing line but maybe kicker seems more appropriate.

Wasn’t entirely negated. They were 2nd and 15 after that play, so still a net loss in yards.

They had the ball at the 25. It was 1st and 5, sack was negated.

DJ played a TON today.

He was up and down. Couple bad misses (but who didn’t today), but stepped up on several occasions, least of which was the bullrider sack.

Negated by defensive hold downfield.

Still impressive.

Main thing I don’t like about his play is he seems clueless about where his help is, and where HE should be in relation to his help. Misplayed relative to Mike Brown’s position at least twice that I saw, one of which going for an easy 6.

No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.

by hmills110 on Nov 22, 2009 4:31 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

He's a yo-yo player.

Made some eye-catching plays, but his play is fundamentally unsound, imo. Doesn’t know where he’s supposed to be in relation to his teammates. By this time in his career, even with a new DC, he should have MUCH better awareness of his assignments. When he has no confusion, he’s a superior athlete. When he blows it, he’s a superior athlete giving up the easy first down or touchdown.

No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.

Succop – 3/3 on FG attempts including the game winner in OT!

I honestly thought it was going to be a Pitt Kc game score circa 2007

when the Chiefs got blown out 44 – 10 or something horrific…

But I am super amped even if I missed most of the game because all my feeds sucked and only caught the OT! IT WAS WORTH IT!!!

Fair enough

Overall, I’m disappointed in DJ. He’s shown he has the ability to take over games but he just can’t seem to consistently put it all together.

For every big play (that sack was awesome, even if it didn’t count) he seems to make two or three mistakes, ranging from missed tackles (I saw at least one) to not covering his man properly, like the TD play.

Wow….earlier I posted how it was the same old pathetic Chiefs and they we`re clueless…..How wrong could I be at the final whistle? That second half was full of determintaion and gritt and they hung in there til the end. I still thought they we`re going to lose in OT but we`re proud of the Chiefs fightback! Then they stepped it up and pulled of an unlikely win!
That was by far the best game I`ve seen them play in years. There we`re no weak links in the second half and they fought for each other….the play calling got better….well done EVERYBODY…..bloody awesome!!!!

Overlooked props go out to Mike Brown and John McGraw and an underrated defense

I know Brown this year has been the whipping boy around here but thats two excellent games in a row and he’s looked like what we expected of him.

John Mcgraw is more known as a grocery bagger then a football player around here but when he’s been healthy, to me, he’s been excellent. He flies around the field and is probably the surest tackler on the entire team.

And to the underrated defense where the stats dont truly tell the story. We are young and learning and succeptable to big plays but you can see the potential here. When they needed to dig in they did.

Also honorable mention, the 4th/OT was the most solid playcalling ive seen from Clancy all year.

I am starting to love me some McGraw

Several times he would come flying in from off camera somewhere and lay a nice hit on the ballcarrier. He’s also a BAMF on special teams.

by Soria's Unibrow on Nov 22, 2009 3:40 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Maybe overstated

But on some of those run plays he was Polamaluesque. Came from no where with tons of speed and hits like a truck. Now if we could just get some better pass defense out of the safeties.

"Success is never ending, failure is never final."

by GenericBrand on Nov 22, 2009 3:44 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Those safeties ARE smart and plenty fast to play up near the line and make a difference.

And now that we have Andy Studebaker to play FS, we’re set!

No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.

Oh He's Tough

His line and pass protection sucks and he’s prone to making bad errors though. And when your QB throws for almost 400 yards and your team still gets beat by a 2-7 squad, I’d say that they can’t say it was the QB who was the problem. Steelers’ issues today stemmed from o-line and running game. Probably more o-line.

It's a high-risk-to-QB style of play that PIT has pulled off many times in the past.

Do you think part of the reason he takes unneccsary sacks, holding the ball to long, is due to the fact that he knows one negative play for this offense probably ends a drive?

by Chief1 on Nov 22, 2009 3:58 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I'm going to go with no.

Because a sack can often be just such a play. Not as bad a a pick, but still not good at all.

by KCinAZ on Nov 22, 2009 3:59 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Exactly,

and like I keep saying, when we aren’t picking up 4-6 yards on first down we don’t win. Cincy beat us while giving up 11 plays of over 10 yards on first down, but we had very few 4-6 yard gains on first down, and eventually you miss on those 10 yard plays.

Without consistent yardage and big plays we move down field and then get a turnover or just miss on throws and the drive is done. Arians tried running more on second and long to mix it up, but we still couldn’t turn third downs into firsts often enough to win. Give credit to your coaches, that was a good game plan. It looks like people are starting to figure out how to exploit our weaknesses.

No, they're both 6-3.

The winner goes to 7-3, the loser to 6-4. 10 total games after this weekend.

No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.

That is what Ward gets for his mocking of the Tomahawk Chop!

Just voted the dirtiest player in the NFL by his peers in Sports Illustrated

And then he tries to show up the home team like that. What a prick.

I’d take Hines Ward on the Chiefs any day of the week. He plays hard all game.

by bh13 on Nov 22, 2009 4:08 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I concur...

that guy is good. And seemingly ageless. So what if he lays out a defender here and there, most defenders are trying to hurt offensive players on every play.

This space for rent.

I like Ward, he's a competitor...

…about the so-called “dirtiest player” nonsense he said ’I’m just a little WR with no speed , I don’t know rather to be flattered or offended".

by FrankPitts on Nov 22, 2009 8:48 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Yah whatever we won...

so what... Brodie would have won by like 20 and if LJ were still here he would have had like 212 yards. This team is a joke, and your all dumb for not realizing that.

This space for rent.

THANK you.

We’ll see what the haters say this week…

It wouldn't've been close if we'd've only kept Pollard

Anybody hear what Haley has said about his 1st win in Arrowhead?

Haley

Live and die everyday with this team!

by Chief1 on Nov 22, 2009 4:14 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Finally.

Finally evidence that Haley can coach. He made half time adjustments and got the offense going. Finally we can see that there is a plan. Mad props to Haley and Pioli. Stay the course. Today was evidence that WE CAN DO THIS! The ship is turning around freinds. Confidence and morale will be HUGE in the coming weeks. This win today is big. real big. Ginormous even. This could be the turning point. Who’s next? SD? Bring it on!

Watching the Bolts, right now, in an apparent beat-down of the Broncos.

For my 8-8 minimum prediction, Chiefs are in must-win situation from here on out. Virtually have to win out.

Mixed feelings about SD-DEN game… Is there any way they can BOTH lose this game?

No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.

Yeah.

Hey, they could always tie right?

i've been one for about 20

and i agree completely.

for some reason THIS is the game that finally made me feel like the chiefs are changing course.

Oh, BTW....

Chambers will be ready to stick it to SD. 4 months ago, that game looked bad on paper. The situation has changed now though…

and yet right now i’m thinking about charles taking it to the house on the first play of the game

When I watched Chambers 61 yarder in OT...

I was mad that Pope, i think, was just standing there….then realized it was because the guy he was blocking was laying on the ground at his feet….good block.

I didn't notice that. I just thought he'd given up on the play.

But the camera angle was from the KC endzone, so I think it likely Pope was, by that time, 20 yards behind the play ANYway. Thx for the additional pair of eyes, woodman.

No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.

by hmills110 on Nov 22, 2009 4:40 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah

the guy Pope was blocking turned his back to him so Pope let up so the ref wouldn’t mistakenly call a block in the back. He did a pretty good job on that play.

Same event

just that was the continuation, the guy laying on the ground with Pope backing away!

Wow!

I am hoarse, drained and proud. I teared up a little at the end of the game. Finally, a real football game. I would have been proud even if we had lost.

Is it safe?

I was watching the game at my aunts surprise party

I was going nuts as Chambers ran down the sidelines! may have ruined the surprise!

Man, my bro and I hugged

at the end of the game. This is the best win we’ve had in years. I’m so happy right now.

Not looking forward to the debbie downers, though. (Whitlock et al)

My favorite play that i saw....

Was Derrick Johnson’s sack when he held on to Big Ben with another guy in between them. Too bad there was a penalty on the play cuz it was GREAT!

Hey, want to congratulate you guys from BFTB.

Nice win. You guys are really improving and I’ll be more afraid of y’all than Denver come next year.

Can we PLEASE draft Ali Villanueva of Army this year??? I'd mortgage a kidney for a tackle/wideout hybrid.
