Better Know the Jacksonville Jaguars: Ask Big Cat Country

In an effort to help get my mind off the disaster that was last Sunday, I figured I would start the Q&A a little early.

A quick introduction, I'm John one of the writers over at SBN's Jacksonville Jaguar blog Big Cat Country. The Chiefs travel to Jacksonville for the first time since 2004 to take on my Jags, in front of what may be the lowest crowd to watch a NFL game since the Titans were in their purgatory of being the Tennessee Oilers. If you have any questions on the game, or the Jags in general, feel free to ask.

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Arrowhead Pride's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Arrowhead Pride writers or editors.

As a Maurice Jones Drew Fantasy Football owner I have a bone to pick with you.

How can a guy get the ball only 8 times when he averaged over 22 yards per carry?
Seriously…I was watching the Vikings game on TV but following Jags/Titans online and I kept seeing:
1st down: David Gerrard incomplete pass
2nd down: David Gerrard incomplete pass
3rd down: David Gerrard incomplete pass
4th down: Punt.

GIVE THE BALL TO MJD DAMMIT.

I also ask your brilliant playcaller to continue this for the Chiefs game…I’ll gladly take a zero point day from MJD if it means a Chiefs win.

Two 80 yard TD runs certainly helped his average yesterday ;)

But yes, I agree you’ll see a lot of MJD on Sunday. The Jags went pass happy yesterday because they did that against the Titans in Week 4 and had their best performance of the season. Sunday, I hope, will be a get back to basics game.

they were pass happy?

How come mike sims-walker had like 1 catch? Some weeks he is explosive and others he does absolutely nothing.

I cut him on my fantasy team despite him playing the Chiefs this week. He is supposed to be Garrards number 1 target but he seems so inconsistent!

by Lucasjr5 on Nov 3, 2009 8:07 PM CST up reply actions

The Jaguars as a whole is inconsistant, excluding MJD

We were very pass happy against the Titans in week 4, due to their apparent void of Ability in Pass Defense. That being said, they got Cortland Finnegan back, and now they don’t suck as much. Jacksonville is best at running the ball, and when we run well constantly, our passing game improves.

Good question

Quite a few Chiefs fans that wanted us to take a look at Holt.

by Joel Thorman on Nov 2, 2009 4:37 PM CST up reply actions

Holt has been doing excellent

He’s taken over as the veteran leader of the team that was Fred Taylor’s role the last few seasons, something I didn’t expect. He’s mostly a solid possession receiver now, but about once a game he’ll make a play that’ll remind you of the player he once was.

Thoughts on your eventual first round draft pick Tim Tebow?

To me Tebow to the Jags makes sence on so many levels.

1st Round Pick, NO NO NO. 3rd Round Pick, Heck yes

We could get him in the third. If not, there’s Tony Pike, Dan Lefevour, Hiller, etc.

god help us - NOOOOOOOOOO~!~

Tebow is not a NFL QB – no way, no how. If he’s drafted as our #1 QB, we will be doomed to 3-13 records until the franchised is shipped off to Siberia.

We’ve been saying that for three years now!

OK – we don’t get to see Jacksonville much, except highlights of Maurice Jones Olivia Newton John Drew.

It looks like kind of an up and down year for you guys. What’s been good, what’s been bad? Are we competing with you for O-lineman in the draft?

How’s Garrard been?

Even after last week, do most Jacksonville fans see this week as an “easy” win?

The Good:
The emergence of Mike Sims-Walker as a possible legitimate #1 wide receiver. I really think by this time next year he’ll be mentioned with Larry Fitzgerald, Andre Johnson, etc. Actually, the entire wide receiving corp has been a pleasant surprise. After year’s of having CFL level wide outs, this year’s group has looked like an All Star team by comparison.

Finding out that yes, MJD can be a feature back.

The play of the rookies, especially 2nd round pick RT Eben Britton and 3rd round picks NT Terrance Knighton and CB Derek Cox. Also, the entire way new GM Gene Smith has retooled this team over the offseason. It is so refreshing to have a competent guy handling personnel decisions.

The Bad
The pass defense has been terrible, with yesterday being something of a cathartic moment. I think everyone at BCC has agreed Reggie Nelson is another 1st round Shack Harris bust.

The attendance, and with it every national writer putting us on the fast track to LA. I still say your divisional mates in San Diego or Oakland have a better shot, along with the Rams.

The inconsistent play of 1st round pick LT Eugene Monroe. Though to be fair, the last two games he played in at full capacity against St.Louis and Houston he looked good.

Garrard has been inconsistent, much the same as last year. He’ll follow up a solid game with a great one, then lay an egg the next week. Much as the team in general. I think there is a very good possibility the Jags will take a QB in the 1st round, and no it won’t be Tebow.

Who knows, had we won on Sunday I would be saying this game screams Jack Del Rio special (aka another loss in a game we should’ve won on paper.)

Well heck FSBlue

You can solve both the shitty attendance and inconsistent QB play with drafting Tebow.
Assuming you pick around the middle of the 1st round, the “slam dunk” QB’s will be gone leaving you with no other choice.

Tebow is going to be a horrible QB in the Pros

I would much rather have FSU’s QB Christian Ponder, Cincinatti QB Tony Pike, or Jake Locker.

Also, I’m not a believer that Tim Tebow is going to magically solve the ticket issues. The real thing that needs to be done is actually get Orlando involved. I support the idea Jaguars playing a preseason home game in the Citrus Bowl every year as a way to get them in the hearts and minds of the city. As of right now, all the Jags do with their “secondary” market is force the station to show their eight road games.

I've watched Tim Tebow for four years, and I haven't seen a lick of progression from him

He has a worse delivery than Byron Leftwich, his footwork is atrocious, and he just generally isn’t accurate.

Watch the Tennessee-Florida game. Monte Kiffin dared Tebow to throw into the honey hole that exists in the Tampa 2 the whole game and Tebow never pulled the trigger. That despite Tebow saying he wanted to prove he was a NFL QB all off season.

FSB is one of Guys who dislikes Tebow, I however like Tim.

i’m also a gators fan, so I get to watch him every weekend. Tim is mobile and smart, which helps him alot. He can thread the needle and throw a deep ball but it will not look like a tight spiral. his accuracy depends on his opponents, He’s usually hitting the Wrs than not. His windup is really wierd, which if improved, would improve Tebow by alot.

Maybe you guys should build a new stadium in Deltona or Samford and try to just share the team with Orlando.

Luckily, Tampa Bay isn’t doing well enough to draw the support of the Orlando base.

The stadium isn't the issue

Its just the getting people from church or from their homes to the game. Jacksonville unfortantely doesn’t have much of a population that lives in downtown Jacksonville. You could say its all suburbs.

I agree with everything you said but...

Sims-Walker-He will never be that good bro. To say that he will be mentioned in the same sentence as Andre and Larry is ridiculous. But hey someone else said Tebow and Steve Young in the same sentence. I dont know if this post is on some LSD or if you actually beleive it, but that will never happen. He wouldnt be a number 1 for over half the teams in the league. He could come play number 2 for us. I think he should stick to the sentence with Cocthery, Sidney Rice, and Mark Clayton.

LOL Matt Jones

The Jags cut him after he violated his probation from getting arrested with coke in summer 2008. To be fair, he seemed to get his act straight during the 2008 season and had easily his best year as a pro.

He has a reputation as a slacker and a guy who never really cared, combined with his legal issues, that is why he isn’t in the NFL.

From wikipedia

Against teams with smaller defensive linemen, the 2008 Jaguars offense resembled the 2007 offense, because the line was able to dominate.

The Chiefs have an average size front (except Jackson) is this still true about 2009 Jag team?

What is the weakness of your defense?

Can you stop the run, the pass or little of both? You also said pass rushing is a problem, hows your pass blocking? Will we be able to get to the QB? How do you play against 3-4 defenses typically? We run a hybrid scheme, so you’ll see that, some 4-3 and some nickel most likely.

Cry Havoc! And let slip the Chiefs Defense of War!!!

by nateforchiefs on Nov 2, 2009 6:32 PM CST reply actions

Allow me to tag team with FSB

The weakness of our Defense is Our rookies, tackling, and Pass Def. Our pass blocking is usually is the inverse of the pass rush. If you are good or at least decent at pressure you will win, if not, you will fail. You’ll most likely sack Garrard once or twice. I think we play better against 3-4s, so i’d think you’d stick to the other elements of your D..

The Chiefs will be without LJ, and his 2.6 yards per carry

In his place most likely will be Jamaal Charles, a much smaller, quicker back, averaging around 8 yards per carry. How do you think this will affect the way Jacksonville plays defense?

That comes out to 5.0 YPC, however, most of them come on 3rd & longs where the D plays the pass giving Charles more room to run. Looking forward to see how his quickness translates into an every down back this week-end.

But 5 per rush. As I recall, he’s gotten a lot of 1 and 2 yard carries with a 15 here and there to make the average look better. He’s gonna have to work his ass off this sunday.

I’d be preditcting the same for Maurice Jones Olivia Newton John Drew as well.

With Kolby probably coming off the PUP list, I have NO idea what to expect! And Haley just learned he doesn’t have to comment on injured players, so who knows?
