Mock draft w/names

For those who complained about not naming each player. If any of us actually get even one pick right that would be pretty impressive. I still think (laughable) that we'll pick up a RB in free agency. There are too many holes on the lines and defensive secondary to spend a top 4/5 round pick on a RB with servicable RB's available with experience-Jerious Norwood,Chris Brown,Cadillac Williams,Ronnie Brown,Leon Washington,Willie Parker,Chester Taylor. With our cap room we can get one of these guys-if they want to come here!

1st round - Eric Berry - We will/should take the best player available-instead of everyone trying to fix the number 1 problem with our first pick-take the best player on the board and build a strength of the team.

2nd Round - Mike Johnson G-Alabama - The guy is 6'6 305 and has also played tackle-versatile players will help. He blocks for Mark ingram. Alabama is one of the best teams in the country this year and its not for their passing game.

2nd round - Eric Olsen - C - Notre Dame - Building from the inside out. With the Pioli-Weis connection if the guy is a player-we'll get the real scoop. So if we take Olsen-he'll be coming reccomended through a trusted source.

3rd - Jordan Shipley - WR - Texas - Wes Welker -enough said.

4th - Jean(Jason) Pierre-Paul - DE/OLB - Guy is 6'6 260 and is athletic enough to drop in coverage. He can rush the passer and has a huge payoff.

5th - Al woods  - DT - LSU - 6'5 315 lb DT can clog the middle. Might as well get our entire D-Line from LSU. Athletic monster that can get in the backfield.

5th - Brandon Banks - WR/KR - Little kick returners that are faster than lighting from K-state have proven well in the NFL.

Considering we do not know the intangibles of these players and that is justifiably the most important aspect of a players evaluation from our front-office these mock drafts are shooting in the dark. I like where we are headed though.

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Arrowhead Pride's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Arrowhead Pride writers or editors.

I'd be amazed if Mike Johnson ever blocked for McFadden or Jones

Did he transfer from Ark to ’Bama a few years ago or something?

my bad

doesn’t change his size and strength

by Bajah07 on Nov 2, 2009 12:21 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

He's not bad

I wouldn’t take him in the second round, but that’s not to say I don’t think he’d be a good guy to pick up somewhere along the line. He has trouble getting low, which isn’t surprising for a guy who is probably very close (I’d guess 6’5", actually) to the 6’6" you mentioned, but he’s a pretty decent player. He might be a candidate to move to right tackle, in all seriousness.

I’m as big a fan of Berry as anyone, and if he could be had where KC picks, I wouldn’t complain. If he were gone, I’d say maybe Okung.

In fact, here’s my alternate mock:

1.6 – Russell Okung, LT, Okie State
2nd – Vince Oghobaase, NT, Duke
2nd – Jerry Hughes, rush LB, TCU
3rd – Joe Pawelek, ILB, Baylor
4th – Dexter McCluster, WR/RB/PR/KR, Ole Miss
5th – Mike Tennant, OG/OC, Boston College
5th – Anthony Dixon, RB, Mississippi State
7th – Kyle Callaway, OT, Iowa

Okung would probably be an immediate starter, and Tennant might surprise there as well. Callaway would be yet another quality Ferentz product with the strength and polish to push for a starting RT position if Albert hasn’t picked up the new offense well enough to remain outside.

Ogho would be a strong interior guy who could punish multiple blockers and cut into the pocket. Although I’d love Kindle where I have KC taking Hughes, I really don’t think there’s any chance he makes it out of the top 15, so Hughes is a great prize in the 2nd. He can put his hand in the dirt or rush from the standup, and do well at both. Good size, nice size/strength/speed combo, very good development from coach Patterson at TCU as well.

Pawelek is a talented inside linebacker who could play either side. He might not last to the third, but a guy can hope, can’t he?

McCluster is an exciting jack-of-all-trades WR. He takes direct snaps, he takes reverses for runs and passes, he catches, he returns punts and kicks, and when the team needs a key third down conversion, he takes the handoff or makes an acrobatic grab. He’s 5’7".

Dixon is a beastly back with great power. He had a few minor character problems, so I think he lasts this long, but it’s nothing that I don’t think the team could handle.

Dixon will be a steal.

Dude can pound the ball down your throat….nice pick.

are you picking him there in the 5th?

kinda like the Pats did last year

I’d like to see a similar strategy this year from Pioli

extra 5th

Clinton Snyder from Stanford – OLB

by Bajah07 on Nov 2, 2009 12:44 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Do you mean Jason Pierre-Paul from USF?

If he comes out, no way he falls all the way to Round 4— I think high-second or third round would be much more likely for a high-ranked pass rusher like Pierre-Paul. It would require a HUGE influx of underclassmen to drive him down that far.

Re Berry: Sounds good, will he be there if Chiefs are picking sixth or so? OTOH, that’s very high for a not-Sean-Taylor safety prospect. Definitely prefer Berry WAY WAY MUCH over Taylor Mays.

Too high for Shipley: doubt that he’ll ever be able to beat press coverage in the NFL, there will be lots of other receivers on the draft board who are as fast and catch as well.

I think you’ve got the defensive guys and O-line guys switched: Pioli will go for at least one defensive pick in the 2nd round, maybe two, and look for O-line prospects in 3rd, 4th and 5th rounds.

Re Banks: Too high again— there will be tons of small and fast KR/slot receiver types to choose from, prospects will still be available in the 6th round.

by Wheatboy74 on Nov 2, 2009 1:11 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

well...

I think Berry would be a great value at #6… he’s THAT kind of game-changing player.

Re Banks: The Chiefs currently don’t have a 6th round pick…

by stagdsp on Nov 2, 2009 1:14 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

True, but...

… Pioli likely can trade back into 6th round if desired.

I think re drafting Berry, the biggest question is whether the QB-hungry teams picking before KC (Cleveland, St. Louis and possibly Washington) take a high-pick QB and leave the high-value, non-QB prospects mostly available up to #6 for KC and others who don’t needs QB’s (Tampa Bay, Detroit)…. Or do they try to trade into a later 1st round pick (very difficult)… Or instead decide that McCoy et al don’t rate such a huge $$$ commitment and take a ‘safer’ non-QB pick?

I think if only one QB is taken in the top five, then Berry probably won’t be there for KC at the #6 slot, or later.

by Wheatboy74 on Nov 2, 2009 2:02 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Banks

They may be available but Banks is one of the best, if not the best in the country. It’ll depend on what we do earlier in the draft but the position has to be addressed. There are a lot of conflicting reports on JPP, he struggled in a couple of their games as did Selvie. Shipley will be good in the NFL. Not a number 1 receiver but in the slot-jordy nelson-esque.

by Bajah07 on Nov 2, 2009 3:22 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I doubt there will be any receivers in the draft with as good a double-move as Shipley

Considering that none currently exist in college football. There’s something to be said for such a polished route-runner. And although he’s a little slower than his track star days before the hammy injuries, his hands are incredible. Few are going to have that kind of hands.

by burntorangehorn on Nov 2, 2009 7:49 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

AJ Green has a way sicker double move.....

Shipley plays in the Big 12, That means no press coverage and weak secondary. I think he will be exactly like a Jordy Nelson Guy. Probably 30 catches a year in the prime of his career.

We can't draft luxury players

If we draft a wide receiver this year, my head is gonna explode. We have to draft linemen (both sides of the ball) and linebackers with at least our first 5 picks. I would like to see them draft 3 o-linemen in the first 2 rounds.

Of those backs, I don’t know much about Norwood or Chris Brown, but absolute NO to Cadillac and Slow Willie Parker. If we can get Leon, we could then pay for Herm twice but he might be good. Ronnie Brown would be good. Isn’t Chester Taylor mostly a FB?

If we got Jean Pierre Paul, would he actually tackle Pierre Garcon if he had the opportunity?

And we pick up

Kerry Meier as an undrafted FA 2 seconds after the draft is over to be our Wes Welker type receiver. Instead of taking Shipley that early, lets take Briscoe there if he falls that far. I know I just mentioned 2 KU guys, but I think these two are the only two on the offense that will make anything in the pros right now.

Kind of a weird comparison. He’s much more like Jake Reed.

Hughes or Norwood.

Who is going to be the best coming out? We should just get them both and put them as our two OLB’s….could you imagine the kind of pass rush we would have then….

Comparison

Jerry Hughes – 6’3 257lbs – Played RB in HS. Last season as a Junior – 52 tackles 14 sacks, 18.5 TFL, 6FF, 2INT,….This season so far after 8 games – 40 Tackles 10.5TFL, 9 sacks.

Eric Norwood – 6’1 253lbs – 3 star DE in HS. Last season as Junior – 75 tackles 14.5TFL 9 sacks….This season so far after 9 games – 54 tackles 8.5TFL, 6 sacks, 2INT, 1FF, 3 blocked kicks.

Looks to me like I would love to have either one. Hughes seems to be more productive rushing the passer, while Norwood looks to be better against the run gaining more tackles. These arent the only two Pass Rushing OLB out there but they are two of the best……

I like Norwood....

Also, You have to consider the competition Norwood faces. He gets doubled, sometimes tripled in the SEC, then again, Hughes gets tripled all the time. I was watching a TCU game were he rolled off the LT, Blew by the Guard after being Chiped two times by the RB and FB. He didnt get a sack but it took 4 guys to stop him. So I would be content with either.

Some people don't wait to parrot what the draft sites say

Some make evaluations of players based on what they see in college football games. In my case, I see the NFL as a way to keep tabs on college players who graduate, rather than a league that stands on its own merits.

The Chiefs HAVE to

go offensive line with multiple picks for two reasons: 1) our o-line is aweful and 2) there will not be much for o-line talent in free agency this year. Quite a few defensive play-makers will be available in free agency, such as Julius Peppers (who wants to be a rush linebacker in a 3-4) and Karlos Dansby. The Chiefs have the cap room to target both players to improve the defense and could even target a ball-hawking safety early in the draft like Eric Berry if they decide to use their two 2nd rounders on o-linemen and could even get a quality receiver in the 3rd.

by kc_radrh8r on Nov 2, 2009 8:44 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Makes sense...

But, I’m starting to wonder if they can (potentially) get their starting Center in round 4 or 5, and a potential starting Guard in round 3.

that would free up those first three picks to get guys like:
Berry, Cody, Norwood, Benn, Bryant?

I really think Berry is the man in the first… but if he’s not there, they do have some options.
The biggest needs on the OL are G and C… which can easily come in the mid rounds (3-5)

I wouldn’t mind taking an OT in the first or 2nd… but they wouldnt HAVE to

I agree Stag..

How sick would that be if we got Berry, Cody, and Benn with our first 3 picks, I doubt it happpens but I would honestly shit a Brick. My Ideal draft would be Berry, Iupati, Lindley, Tennant. I doubt Lindley is there but who knows. Depends on where the Falcons pick ends up. Hopefully they go on a losing streak.

Hand and Hand

Draft and FA go hand and hand. We really must sign some big FA’s, that would allow our draft to be a really good one. I would sign LT Marcus McNeill, WR Steve Breaston and LB Kirk Morrison, we HAVE to out spend everyone on these guys. Then we draft:

R1 #5 S Eric Berry-Tennessee
R2 #39 LB Jerry Hughes-TCU
R2 #54 DT Vince Oghobaase-Duke
R3 #69 C Maukrice Pouncey-Florida
R4 #101 TE Aaron Hernandez-Florida
R5 #133 RB Mario Hardesty-Tennessee

Offensive line early in the draft

has proven to build winning teams. Look at the draft selection of the offensive linemen from last year’s playoff teams…

Panthers: LT Jordan Gross (1st round), RT Jeff Otah (1st round), C Ryan Kalil (2nd round), LG Travelle Wharton (3rd round)

Falcons: LT Sam Baker (1st), LG Justin Blalock (2nd)

Giants: RG Chris Snee (2nd), RT Kareem McKenzie (3rd-Jets), reserve OT William Beatty (2nd)

Eagles: G Shawn Andrews (1st), reserve OT Winston Justice (2nd), reserve G Max Jean-Gilles (4th), reserve G Mike McGlynn (4th)

Cardinals: RT Levi Brown (1st), RG Deuce Lutui (2nd)

Dolphins: LT Jake Long (1st), RT Vernon Carey (1st), * last year’s center was Samson Satele (2nd) but was traded

Titans: LT MIchael Roos (2nd), RT David Stewart (4th)

Chargers: LT Marcus McNeil (2nd), C Nick Hardwick (3rd), RG Louis Vasquez (3rd)

Ravens: RT Michael Oher (1st), LG Ben Grubbs (2nd), RG Chris Chester (2nd), G Marshall Yanda (3rd), * former C Jason Brown (4th) signed richest center free agent contract in NFL history with Rams

I’m not saying that teams cant get lucky with late round picks or even undrafted players (see Brian Waters, Kris Dielman, right side of Falcons line), but it’s just rare. The teams that consistently win on a yearly basis are the teams with solid offensive lines. The Chiefs were the winningest team in the 90s due to guys like John Alt, Dave Szott, Tim Grunhart, Will Shields, Jeff Chriswell, Glenn Parker, etc. and Vermiel’s teams saw great success with Willie Roaf, Waters, Weigmann, Shields, and Tait.

thanks for the research

good job.

I agree that some first-day talent is needed for a good OL…

consider that the Chiefs already have a 1st rounder… if they draft a C before the 4th, that’s 2 reasonably high picks… 3 if they get a guard…

all without spending another 1st on a LT…

Nice list

Agree and disagree with the post radrh8r. The best NFC O-line the past 2-3 years was the Giants, and their guys are mostly round 2-4. The best AFC lines are populated mostly by guys from the second to fourth rounds as well (Ravens, Chargers, Titans). Good to have 1st rounders, but investing lots of first round picks in the O-line maybe not the best. For example, debatable whether Carolina helped themselves that much by using 1st round picks for both tackles, they might be in better shape today if they had used the Otah pick for a young QB, WR or quality on the defensive line.

Ditto for the Chiefs in the 90’s and under Vermeil: they had great offensive lines, but several of those guys you listed were not first-rounders.

The other point I’d make is that many of the O-line guys picked in round 2, later, often take a few months or a year to break into the starting unit and play really well as a unit. Even if the Chiefs get some better talent in 2010 Round 2, it’s gonna take awhile before they develop cohesiveness and experience to be really excellent together. Even with more talent, I don’t expect the Chiefs’ offensive line to be very much improved until the middle-to-end of next year.

Please

do the similar research on this list. I’d be interested to see the comparison of where these guys were drafted.

I think...

we could trade guys like Page and Johnson after we franchise them or put 1 year tenders on them. I think we could get a 3rd for page and a 4th for DJ. I think we should go big in FA w/ just two players in Wilfork (NT) and Dansby (ILB).

1. Berry (FS, Tennessee)
2. Impatu (G, Idaho) – best guard in the draft
2. O’Dowd (C, USC) – best center in the draft
3. Selvie (Rush LB, S Florida) – looks the part, production is done probably due to double/triple teams
3. Gerhart (RB, Stanford) – power runner, reminds me of Shonn Greene coming out
4. Ghee – (CB, Wake Forest) – tall physical corner w/ good speed
4. Peek (TE, Alabama) – blocking TE
5. Shipley (WR, Texas) – I think people have him too high for the 3rd. He can contribute immediately as our starting PR and complete for the slot.
5. Rolle (SS, Florida St) – could be a great steal
5. Verner (CB, UCLA) – can’t get enough depth at CB

We have so many holes to fill that this wouldn’t solve everything. I would still feel very worried about our pass rush as well as depth at WR. If we can get A Bryant from Tampa for a reasonable price that might solve one problem. As for the pass rush we are just going to hope that Hali progresses, Selvie’s learning curb isn’t that steep, and one of our projects steps it up. (Studebaker, Walters) I would also feel comfortable w/ a Albert/Waters/O’Dowd/Impatu/O’Callaghan line.

Franchising

Page and Johnson would make them in the top 5 highest paid players at their positions. Clearly Page is not a top 5 safety, nor is Johnson a top 5 linebacker in the league. With that said, who in their right mind would trade draft picks to acquire overpaid underachieving players?

And to go back to the list of Alt, Szott, Grunhard, Shields, Chriswell, Parker, etc…
John Alt- 1st round in 1984
Dave Szott- 7th round in 1990
Tim Grunhard- 2nd round in 1990
Will Shields- 3rd round in 1993 (their first pick though)
Joe Valerio- 2nd round in 1991
Trezelle Jenkins- 1st in 1995 (this one was a total bust)
Victor Riley- 1st round in 1998 (didnt play bad but wasnt resigned after the money tied into Tait and after acquiring Willie Roaf)
John Tait- 1st in 1999

Now look at the next 6 consecutive offensive linemen drafted by the Chiefs, all of which were mid to late round picks:

Brett Williams- 4th in 2003
Jordan Black- 5th in 2003
Kevin Sampson- 7th in 2004
Will Svitek- 6th in 2005
Tre Stallings- 6th in 2006
Herb Taylor- 6th in 2007

POINT PROVEN!
