According to an industry source, the team considered releasing Johnson — who has a history of misbehavior — but was cautious of the precedent it might set. The Chiefs didn't want to send the message that, if a player wants out of Kansas City, all he has to do is speak out or act up to get his way....It's not out of the question that Johnson has played his final game with the Chiefs, and the next week will go a long way toward determining what happens next. Johnson is being watched.

The Chiefs didn’t want to send the message that, if a player wants out of Kansas City, all he has to do is speak out or act up to get his way

Oh, of course. It’s much better to keep a malcontent team cancer (and an aging unproductive one at that) around your team to cause distractions just so the coaching staff can futilely try to get him to submit to their authority, even though he’s never done that with any previous coach he had even when he wasn’t a terrible player.

Let’s get something straight…there is nothing the Chiefs can do to bring Johnson around. Nothing. He had exactly one carrot he cared about, his contract. And now that he’s got the guaranteed money from that back he has no incentive to care what Haley or Pioli or the fans think about anything. None. He’s not going to get better, he’s not bucking for a Hall of Fame spot and his career is pretty much over once he leaves here because nobody else is going to invest much time or money in him.

And let’s be clear about one other thing…the refusal to cut Johnson isn’t about helping the team win. It’s about Pioli and Haley demanding that everyone “respect their authoritah” even when they haven’t done a damned thing worth respecting in regards to this football team. Larry Johnson is right about one thing…this team is being run into the ground by ego. And it’s not the players’ egos. It’s the egos of a guy who thinks working for a smart man also makes him smart and a guy who thinks that being an OC for two years (on a team with very talented players) and getting in the face of people makes him Bill Parcells. And neither of them are right. You are what your record says you are, and frankly Pioli’s record and Haley’s record now that they’re the ones in charge say that these two have no clue what in the hell they’re doing.

So these two need to grow a brain, cut Johnson already and start focusing on ways to get this team to win…both in the short and long-term, because at the rate they’re going nobody should respect their authority or anything they have to say because they’ve given nobody any reason to. And Johnson will only be the starting point of the discontent.

So what you're saying is...

Whenever a new coach or manager comes in, each player has no reason to show them respect? Pioli and Haley have every right to demand respect from their players. Pioli has been a part of a proven winning franchise. That didn’t happen overnight. And we can argue forever about whether it was Pioli or Belichick who was successful. Perhaps it was the two working together that made the Patriots successful. Either way, that’s over now. Pioli is here to do one job, to help this team win. He didn’t show up promising to have us in the Superbowl in 5 years. He didn’t guarantee we’d be a winning franchise this year. He more or less stated that he didn’t know how long it was going to take to be a constant winner but that he wanted a certain type of team. He’s cautioned time and time again not to expect a 1 year, miraculous turn around. And as far as Haley goes, let’s give him some time. We gave Herm, who I think every Jets fan was ecstatic to see him go, his time to run this team straight into that iceberg and I don’t think it would’ve mattered if we had Haley, McDaniels, Shanahan, or Cower. This team is a mess that took years in the making and it’s going to take more than a year to make it successful again.

As far as egos go, I’m fine with their egos because they expect every player on this team to produce and do their part to help this team win. Personally I’d rather have their egos here because right now their egos are fed by football teams that produce wins, unlike Peterson who’s ego was fed by how many people in the KC area treated him like a king.

You are what your record says you are, and frankly Pioli’s record and Haley’s record now that they’re the ones in charge say that these two have no clue what in the hell they’re doing.

Just out of curiosity, what would you have done to take this team of constant losers and underachievers and made them successful this year?

So What?
Pioli has been a part of a proven winning franchise.

So were Charlie Weis, Eric Mangini, and Romeo Crennel. They all sucked/suck at their jobs. Know what the common thread was? They all worked for the best coach of this generation. Kind of easy to look smart when you’re riding a smart guy’s coattails.

As far as egos go, I’m fine with their egos because they expect every player on this team to produce and do their part to help this team win.

Really? They’ve won one game…against one of the most ineptly coached teams in the league. And they cut a SS (Bernard Pollard) who’s helped turn around the league’s worst rushing defense to replace him with a guy who’s five years older whose best years are behind him (Mike Brown) because he got into an argument with the incompetent defensive coordinator. So I don’t really think that was about winning at all.

Just out of curiosity, what would you have done to take this team of constant losers and underachievers and made them successful this year?

To make them more successful?

Cut Larry Johnson once the Chiefs won the grievance. Pull out all stops to sign C Jason Brown instead of letting him go to the Rams (even if it meant giving the biggest contract ever). Not sign Mike Goff.

And if I were Pioli I would have have a) not dragged out contract negotiations for myself and screwed the team on hiring assistant coaches and b) hired Leslie Frazier as head coach.

One question
Know what the common thread was? They all worked for the best coach of this generation. Kind of easy to look smart when you’re riding a smart guy’s coattails.

Then why is it, that Belichick was an average coach at best…until he teamed up with Pioli in New England?

by Scott B. on Nov 2, 2009 10:33 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Yep
In 1992, Pioli was hired as a pro personnel assistant by Bill Belichick, then the head coach of the Cleveland Browns. In Cleveland, Pioli was responsible for the evaluation of both college prospects and veteran free agents, as well as negotiating various player contracts.1 When the Browns moved to Baltimore after the 1995 season, Pioli stayed with the team and was promoted to Pro Personnel Coordinator for the 1996 season.1

Yes

I knew that…somewhere in the back of my mind.

So, Belichick thought enough of Pioli to hire him twice.

by Scott B. on Nov 2, 2009 11:04 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Again, So What?

He thought enough of Charlie Weis to give him a job for four years…didn’t make Weis any better of a coach.

And again, so far there’s been very little that Pioli’s done since he got here to make me think that he was really the brains behind the Patriots’ personnel acquisitions instead of Belichick or even Thomas Dimitroff. He made one decent trade for Cassel and Vrabel and found a good kicker in the 7th round. Beyond that most of his acquisitions have been garbage.

Oh And

Outside of Tyson Jackson and Succop, his draft sucked. And so does the head coach he hired. And pretty much every single assistant coach he brought in.

technically speaking, cutting him for what he did would be doing the same thing, which i don’t mind. it seems to me the chiefs were pretty eager to send the guy packing but it is a bit more complex than we, as fans, want to admit. i believe the team would have lost in front of an arbitrator and would be dealing with backlash from the nflpa for not following any sort of progressive discipline if they had just cut him. i wish it weren’t that way but it is.

also, while it’s clear you are underwhelmed by haley (ever since the hire, as i recall) and pioli, i have to believe that, one, clark hunt is also involved in this particular decision, and two, their hands are tied somewhat and can’t really carry out the end to this that they want. just my opinion

Nope

I was fine with Haley until he cut Pollard and fired Gailey.

i didn't really have a problem with either move

i would have preferred (as i think haley would have) gailey be removed prior to ota’s so they could work on the offense they’re running now all offseason. and i have never been all that impressed with bernard pollard as he was seemingly never in the right position in pass coverage. we haven’t upgraded with mike brown but i don’t think we took any steps back either

If He'd Fired Gailey Before OTAs

I would have thought more of his decision. But he didn’t. He did it instead at just about the worst possible time for the team. And that’s just kind of Todd Haley to me…a guy who doesn’t really have a clue what is in the best interests of the team. Just like taking over head coach/OC/QB coach duties simultaneously. And we’ve all seen how well that’s worked out.
