Expect the Steelers to have a spy locked on Charles everywhere he goes this Sunday. Whether he takes a toss, he’ll have a spy. If he runs a swing route, expect a spy. If he releases into the second-level on a delayed route, spy. Screen? Spy. Blocking? Spy. SPY…SPY…SPY!

Charles will be a marked man this Sunday. If Charles can produce yet another break-out game considering the circumstances he faces, then we may very well have a very special player on our hands.

Good read from Josh Looney. Even a Johnnie Morton reference.

What is with Morton?

He sucked dogs balls when he was here.

Predictions for 2009:

The Chiefs will regret cutting LJ

Bowe's numbers regress due to lack of decent QB play.

The D gets better in the second half but still is plagued by big plays

Cassel looks more like the guy Pioli almost cut in the '08 preseason instead of the franchise QB he hoped he would be when he traded him for

Chiefs 3-13

Johnnie is the man.

Anyone that disagrees with me on that point is wrong. End of debate.

Two things will have to happen for us to win Sunday

The defense will have to play its best game of the season and create some turnovers and Cassel will have to play his best game of the season so that the Steelers can’t just focus on Charles all day. If we give up a couple early TDs and Cassel is struggling things could get real ugly, real fast.

Our downfall in this one will be Big Ben

If you can’t put pressure on that guy you can’t beat them. He is hard enough to tackle for the best defenses. We had trouble taking down Garrards fat ass.

A good QB will smoke a team like the Chiefs because we don’t have the pass rush to force them into bad decisions. We’ve seen it when Rivers smoked us, Manning made mistakes but still smoked us.

It is no surprise that the games the Chiefs have won were against teams with terrible QB play. We nearly beat the Cowboys because Romo was god awful but we decided to launch the career of Miles Austin instead.

Our only chance is for Big Ben to have a horrible day. Even then the defense will have to score points off of their mistakes cause I just don’t see the offense getting a TD in this one unless it is in garbage time.

Yeah our non-existent pass rush needs to rear its head

Or we are in big trouble. The oline better block and not think it’s the Running of the Bulls either. This is going to take good secondary to lock on receivers or we are going to launch the career of another speed burner—Mike Wallace.

With someone being glued to Charles

it should free up someone else to make some plays.

Good move by the Chiefs org, glad to see LJ gone.

Our Running Game

Establishing a running game against the Steelers is going to be a real MF’er. If we can do it…I will be extremely impressed.

I hope Haley has a good back-up plan.

At least Polamalu isn’t expected to play. That dude is a freakin’ beast. It almost makes me cry to think we could have had him. That long-haired wildman would have looked damn good in red.

He's the guy I would normally expect to spy Charles

Since he’s probably the only non-corner they have with enough speed to chase Charles to the corner or off-tackle. Without him, I’m not sure whom they’d use. Zone spy is an option, but kind of negates the point of using a spy on a weapon in most cases.

by burntorangehorn on Nov 18, 2009 11:13 AM CST up reply actions

for every strategy, there's others that can beat it

I hope to see play action fakes to Charles, followed by quick passes 10-15 yards downfield.

Who will they spy him with?

There is noone that can match his speed man to man on their defense…I’m worried about it in the run game, not so much in the pass routes (it’s a mismatch)…

I’d say we’d probably watch him with Timmons or Farrior or maybe a DB. I am not sure what type of back Charles is though.

A 4.38 40-yard dash from what I found on google. I know on the corner we have Ike who runs a 4.28 on D. He generally guards the best WR though.

Also, I may be wrong but I think it is generally power backs that give us more troubles and not speedy backs.

Ike's probably going to be in zone, I would think

KC hasn’t established an intimidating passing attack at any point this season, so sitting in zone sets up for more DB support vs. the run. If there is indeed a spy, I can’t imagine Ike would ever be that guy. Even though KC’s receivers scare no one, you can’t sleep on any starting receiver in the NFL.

I think most believe that if KC does in fact turn in a good offensive performance, it’ll depend largely on Charles. Simply ranging out the OLBs could cut down on Charles’ options.

by burntorangehorn on Nov 18, 2009 11:29 AM CST up reply actions

I think we can contain Charles fine with out giving him all of our attention. We did a similar thing to Chris Johnson in week 1.

If KC continues to be as bad as Tennessee was at that point

Then you may be right. But even Matt Cassel is playing better than Collins did before he lost his job.

Tennesee was bad, but Chris Johnson has looked good the entire year.

Well, almost

As you mentioned, he didn’t do a whole lot vs. Pittsburgh in week one.

He had an okay YPC, but nothing to squawk about

A very special player?

He’s facing one of the leagues best D. I don’t think he will have to have a “breakout” game to show what he’s got. He already proved himself, IMO.
