Anger Management

Let's face it people: we're all pretty angry right now with our Chiefs. When your favorite team is 2-7, you shouldn't be happy. If you are happy about that 2-7 record, then you are either: A) wanting the Chiefs to get the #1 overall pick in next year's draft, or B) you are a nutcase. You could be both.

Now I'm going to diffuse the tension here on AP. I'm going to do some Anger Management! Actually I'm just going to analyze some of these issues with our team and come up with positive solutions and friendly reminders.

*I'm angry that we aren't this year's turnaround team (like the 2008 Dolphins). I saw us in the same situation as them. New GM, new head coach, new quarterback, new attitude. We were gonna be competing for the AFC West title this year.

But it hasn't turned out that way and I think I know why. Miami had a very unique situation compared to ours. Bill Parcells is a football mastermind. His hand-picked coach, Tony Sparano, worked under Parcells and their connection was very deep. And Chad Pennington was an excellent pickup. Say what you want about his arm strength: he's sharp as a tack and he's very efficient. He was the ideal triggerman for the team last year while they tried to get Chad Henne up to speed. All of that, throw in some creative playcalling, and guess what? The team took everyone by surprise. Here's something else that contributed to their quick turnaround: they were still a pretty talented squad, despite their 1-15 record. That team probably could have won another 4 or 5 games. But shitty coaching and big-time injuries did them in. So if they won a few more close games they could have been 5-11 or 6-10. A team improving from 6 wins to 11 wins isn't anything new. So their turnaround should not be a total shock.

Why I shouldn't be angry: I need to remind myself that this team is being built like a Parcells-type team. The Tuna model is a proven winner. It may not be quick, but it will pay off well in the long run.

*I'm angry about the coaching. At times I think that our coaching staff is one big fat joke. Tim Kumpie shouldn't be employed at all. And Clancy Pendergrast has shown us all why he got fired from Arizona last year. Haley's playcalling hasn't impressed me either.

Look on the bright side: there are two positives here. First, I still think that despite the quality of these coaches, they are teaching these players to never give up. Just ask Baltimore and Jacksonville. Second, I remind myself that Haley was the last head coach hired this year, and there weren't many top-tier candidates left for Haley to choose from. Kumpie, Clancy, and several others will be gone at the end of the season and Haley will have more options to assemble a better coaching staff.

*I'm angry about Pioli. He's considered to be an excellent personnel man, but what he brought us hasn't been that good. Mike Goff, Zack Thomas, Bobby Engram, Mike Brown: these veteran guys were supposed to be an upgrade, but they just look like Carl Peterson leftovers. Our first draft class hasn't been impresive either. We reached for Tyson Jackson (and almost everyone else from this class). So far, our kicker has made the biggest impact from this class. And on top of that, Matt Cassel hasn't been performing like a $60M man. Pioli is in charge of these decisions.

Take a chill pill. Pioli is the guy that ALL OF US wanted. He's a big reason why the Patriots have been the most successful team of the decade. Last year the FA market was pretty bare. Outside of Albert Haynesworth, nobody really excited me. Pioli deserves a few more years to do his thing, but if we don't substantially improve, Clark Hunt will have no problem pulling the cord on him. Trust me on that.

So, in conclusion, here is the bottom line: as fans, we have a right to be pissed off. We have a right to be mad. But don't give up hope yet. Carl Peterson had 20 years to get us to the Super Bowl. Why can't Pioli get at least 3-5 years? I think it's a little premature to call for the heads of Pioli & Company. Let's try to be positive about this. Now go out there and apply some Anger Management, Chiefs fans!

Thanks for catching that Pistol

I’m gonna fix that now.

I’m afraid I prematurely shot my wad on what was supposed to be a dry run, if you will, so now I’m afraid I have something of a mess on my hands. -Arrested Development

When we blitz, have the LB's do a KC Strip. Do this in rememberance of DT.

Bill Belichik has several times...

…commented on how valuable a part of the team Pioli was, and how good Pioli was at his job.

The Pat’s owner (who’s name slips my mind atm ( the Home Depot guy ) has made similar comments.

Now, since I didn’t work on the front office of the Pat’s and don’t have any records of every single decision that was ever made in NE concerning the team as well as a record of how Pioli stood / voted / suggested / discussed in those desisions….. I won’t every be able to “Prove it”

Barring any actualy hard and fast statistical charts and graphs or any complex multi-paged spread sheets; I’m just gonna have to take the word of coaches, scouts, owners, and co-ordinators that DID work with him on a day to day basis when they say he was a big part of the Patriots success

Although

I don’t want to have to wait and let every gm we hire 20 years to try and get us to a superbowl but not happen then fire him and start over. I want to see improvement by next year. Next year i would like to see a 5-9 win season then improve year after year. Also I would like to be near the top and be an elite franchise like the pats and steelers. I don’t feel like having to constantly rebuild every 3-6 years because of retirings and such, I want us to be on top of the ball at all times not having to wait years for replacements. Example, after Cassel’s career is over hopefully we will have already had a QB learning the system ready to takeover and be the next franchise guy. I think I speak for most Chiefs fans on stuff like this. Do you know how many 20 years of my life i have left?

We Will kick at least 4 Teams Asses in 09
And Succop will be the Key in two of them. Washington & Oakland!

Isnt 20012 when Zombies take over the earth?

Damn we only got 3 years to win a SB, Damn make that 2.

That Falcons Pick Is Looking Like It Might Be Higher Then We Thought.

I have Ronnie Brown, Micheal Turner, and Dwayne Bowe all on my fantasy team.

Well, it's not like I haven't mulled all that over already.

But I don’t see where they were some super talented team. Seriously. They were 1-15. So how in the hell were they so full of talent? Really? No. They had a couple guys that were better than anything we have, but that’s it.

You said it yourself mist.. Chad was a great pick up for them. My question is this;

(And I’m just being real) Does it or does it not seem that it’s ALWAYS some other team that gets it right?

When I brought up the Miami comparison everybody jumped on me about it. Then, like some of the things you pointed out, everyone was listing all these things they did differently to become that team. to that I say EXACTLY!! They did this and that and that other thing and then they were a success story. People also pointed out that the Falcons and the Dolphins suck this year. Well I beg to differ. We suck. They don’t suck. They would destroy us if we played them. So they don’t suck. The Browns suck. The Raiders suck.

Again, as you pointed out..“throw in some creative play calling”. Correct? You said that in your post. Again, I say EXACTLY!! Why didn’t we get Ronnie Brown and pull that wildcat shit? Why? That’s my point. If we have the biggest genius’ in the game it would show. Just like it shows in Atlanta and Miami even this year. Yes, I would love to have a 5-3 record right now. Either one of those two teams would be in the lead for our division right now. Denver lost 3, Chargers lost 3. There ya’ go. You win your division and anything can happen after that.

So again, why is it always another team that figures it out? Personally, I don’t know how you can’t see that. We haven’t been to a superbowl since the 1960’s. Do you realize that when we went to the Superbowl black people couldn’t drink from water fountains in public unless they were labeled for them to?

Do you realize we didn’t have cell phones then? We didn’t have cable TV? There was no Ipod, no laptop, no GPS. That’s how long it’s been. The entire world scene has changed completely since we had a superbowl.

That’s why I don’t have any more patience. How much longer do we have to have these same discussion over and over and over while all the while we lose and someone else’s team wins the superbowl and we watch it from home and could care less who wins. Am I wrong? I can’t be because that’s a historical fact.

If this team were taken over by Bill Parcells we would be a 5-3 team right now. Absolutely. We wouldn’t hand off every first down and end up in 3rd and 14 every time we touch the ball and then have to go for it on 4th down. We wouldn’t have the lead going into the final 3 minutes and watch a shitty joke team like the Raiders shove it down our throats and beat us….AGAIN.

by krayfish on Nov 19, 2009 7:54 AM CST reply actions

That's a very good point krayfish

It always seems like every other team figures out how to win. It seems like all the right pieces are in places for other squads except ours.

Well, even though we gravitate/rotate around the Chiefs

The world does not, There is no reason that we should win a SB just because it is “About Damn Time”. The Chiefs have some responsibility to field a team (all-around team) to make it happen. Some teams 3-4 have won a SB because they had the opportunity/luck
to be good enough in that year to beat a better team. Some could say we had a chance vs Green Bay in SBI. All we had to do is WIN one game. So I disagree in that WE DESERVE a SB just cause we play the game.
Sorry Mistamic
obviously I was addressing Chris :)

Miami and Atlanta had very weak schedules last year.

Not so much this year, and they have middle-of-the-pack records (5-5 and 5-4, respectively). Still probably a player or two away from really contending, although I would not want to be the team facing Miami at crunch-time.

No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.

Chiefs are facing a much tougher schedule in THEIR "turnaround" season,

and the toughest stretch was the EARLY stretch. Even this 2nd half of the season, they’re facing Pitt and a surging (but injury-weakened?) Cincy team.

No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.
