Talk Steelers with BTSC

Tomahak44 was kind enough to lend his time over at Behind The Steel Curtain with his post "Talk Chiefs with AP." So I thought it would be prudent for me to return the favor.  Steeler Nation is starting to turn it's heads to the game this week although as long as Mike Tomlin and company get the Steelers ready to play us Steeler fans can continue to mourn another difficult loss to the Bengals

Arrowhead Stadium is one of the more hostile environments to go into and the Chiefs are a professional football team looking to prove that they can go toe to toe with the defending Super Bowl Champs so this is definitely a match-up that the Steelers can't afford to overlook.

Anyways let me and the rest of the guys and gals over at Behind The Steel Curtain know what questions you have about the 2009 Pittsburgh Steelers.

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Arrowhead Pride's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Arrowhead Pride writers or editors.

Not this year – I expect to see 50% waiving Terrible Towels.

I hope it will be a sea of red, but it’s not likely after watching how many Steelers fans were in Denver, and how many Cow-Girl fans showed up to watch us almost knock them off!

Hey,

Even if Pittsburgh fans are abundant that only gets the Chiefs fans that are in the Stadium to be more loud.

Yea, we did shut up the Cowboy fans

But they were organized and the Cowboys were actually asking for crowd noise at one point. That used to be unheard of.

No Kidding

I really have no hope for KC to actually win this game…I’m actually concerned that Cassel is going to get injured.

In case you haven’t heard, KCs OL hasn’t figured out what pass protection actually is.

Predictions:

Kansas City will not win more than four games in 2009
Kansas City will have a new OC and DC in 2010
Kansas City will win at least seven games in 2010

I’m sure you don’t depend on him as much as the Colts do Bob Sanders, but he has to be a huge impact, not having him.

No way to sugar coat it we are just not as explosive without Troy. Troy forces teams to attack the team with more caution and every play Troy needs to be accounted for. The thing is that Troy has a history of injuries so the Steelers are prepared to play without him even though the defense might not be as explosive without him.

Haley and Pendergast would have done things similar (imo) to what they did against the Ravens,

taking the best player (Ed Reed) out of as many plays as possible. Polamalu being out helps the Chiefs, considerably, imo, although the Stillers have a couple games (in which they struggled) under their belts, and are likely better prepared than they were after the original MCL.

No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.

Mike Wallace. He is a third round draft pick from Old Miss. He had a bad week last week but he has played very well all season and had more receiving yards than any rookie receiver going into last week (Don’t really have the time to check if that is still the case after last week).

He has blazing speed and ran the second fastest time at the combine for a receiver behind Darius Hayward Bay (Sp?)

This kid and Santonio present WICKED quandaries for the KC D.

IMO, KC’s only shot against this pair is for somebody to put a hit on ’em at the line by somebody bigger, blitz the hell outta Big Ben, and pray for the best.

Chiefs front 3 and their “nickel spread” could pose some problems for Pitt. The front 3 and LB play will likely frustrate any running, especially early. The 2-5-4 and 2-4-5 looks on passing downs might cause problems, too. This is a unique matchup, because of the way the Chiefs are built. Relatively weak secondary, but a fairly big and mostly very young front 7.

I think they can run with Hines, if they have to, but all bets are off if they don’t get to Big Ben before Hines can pull a double-move, because he can eventually get separation just by good route-running. Thing is, if Hines gets time for a double-move, Wallace AND Holmes are behind everybody, already.

No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.

by hmills110 on Nov 17, 2009 10:16 PM CST up reply actions

He has been a big reason why teams have had a hard time stopping our passing attack. You can’t cover Ward, Holmes, Heath Miller, and Mike Wallace on every play.

Thats part of it, but the Bengals did a great job of not allowing Ben to leave the pocket and Ben had his worst game of the season.

The Steelers receivers are good at finding open space when Ben extends the play….you need to have the right personnel in place for a qb like Ben.

But in the Indy/NE game I saw WR’s attacking the Secondary Zone via the Safety.
Alah left the CB’s standing in empty space. Does Pittsburgh attack the safety position with their WR’s too? Since our safeties are not strong coverage guys :(

This season we the Steelers have used slant routes much more and this is really the strong suit for Ward, Holmes, and Heath Miller. Mike Wallace has added a threat that can stretch the field although honestly Ben has had a hard time not under throwing Wallace with his blazing speed.

You guys need more help than a hard hitting safety.

Besides, Knockout doesn’t ‘wrap-up’ on tackles really. He relies on his monster soul-crushing hits to stop the ball carrier dead. If he doesn’t make the hit, there needs to be someone behind him to actually make the stop, and we have good guys to do that (Gay, Taylor, Troy when he’s there, Carter when Troy’s not, Townsend, Burnett, you get the idea).

he has dropped just about every pass in the regular season when he has been given the opportunity. Lots of talent just hasn’t been able to put together anything. The emergence of Mike Wallace has really allowed the Steelers to not have to even worry about getting Limas Sweed involved in the offense. It’s been good to not have to count on Limas but at the same time he was a second round draft pick with enormous talent that should be making plays.

Hopefully Limas gets one more shot next season and proves that he can be a solid receiver.

Actually, j-man, KC team speed has ratcheted up in recent weeks.

And no disrespect to D-Bowe, but Chambers, Long and Wade might actually present more difficulties.

And, in THEORY, if they could get Leggett, Washington and Morgan to play heads-up, there IS some potential for a much speedier secondary. And LB configurations involving Hali, Johnson, Williams and Mays (That’s right – put Mays at SOLB) are intriguing to this fan…

No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.

by hmills110 on Nov 17, 2009 10:24 PM CST reply actions

the secondary has been terrible

no other way to put it… they have probably allowed more big plays than any other D in the league. Miles Austin anyone? For some reason we just love to give up those 50+ yard td receptions. Good thing Heyward-Bey can’t catch and Russel can’t throw or we would have given another up last week.

The entire defense hasn’t been good but at least we are getting more than 10 sacks in an entire season with our front 7 this year.

by Lucasjr5 on Nov 17, 2009 11:18 PM CST up reply actions

Not enough speed at S. Not enough aggression at the line.

Last week, a Cincy LB simply knocked Hines Ward on his ass as he went by. The comment by the color guy was “Now THAT’s the way to cover! Took Ward right out of the pattern,” or words to that effect.

As a Chiefs fan, I’m SICK of the last several years of no jam or pitty-pat jam. Where do ALL (but a very few) defensive coordinators and D-backfield coaches get the idea that good coverage means a carefully choreographed dance number by men in tights, all by themselves in space? It just seems like they’re caught up in abstractions, and covering an expanse of grass, when the only grass that matters is the one occupied by an eligible receiver, and the ONE time you know pretty much where he is and can actually INFLUENCE what grass he CAN occupy is before the snap and within 5 yards of the line after the snap. MANHANDLE the sonofabitch!

No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.

What's the deal with Mendenhal?

One week he’s a workhorse the next he seems to be the forgotten man in the O.

Frankly, I think the Steelers are a much better team when they commit to running the ball. Why do they seem to stray away from that at times and what can we expect this weekend?

I really appreciate BTSC taking the time to answer these questions. Good Luck in the playoffs.

This is my signature line. It is full of awesome and win.

by KCSatchmo on Nov 18, 2009 8:52 AM CST reply actions

Well,

I guess that is the anomaly that is Bruce Arians as a play caller, and what frustrates Steeler fans so much about Arians at times. Both games that Mendenhall has had over 20 carries this season he has had over 150 yards rushing. It seems like simple logic to rush him until the wheels fall off and we will roll to victories, but he also carries the ball too high and has had issues with fumbling. Also the Steelers have weapons galore on offense with Ward, Holmes, Miller, and now Mike Wallace so Ben wants to throw the ball.

If the Steelers offense is clicking I would expect to see a first half full of passes and few runs and hopefully this will get the Steelers off to a quick lead. If the Steelers jump out to a quick lead I would expect to see plenty of Mendenhall.

Also another reason why Mendenhall doesn’t get as many carries is because how impressive Mewelde Moore has been as a third down back, he blocks well and has great hands and is an impressive check down back and doesn’t seem to have fumble-itis.

But as far as Mendenhall being the forgotten man in the offense that really isn’t true. He has a firm grasp on the starting position and unless he has some bad games with fumbles, mental mistakes, or injuries I expect you will see him running in a Steelers uniform for quite a few years. But the Steelers offense isn’t the offense of yesteryear, they will throw the ball 30+ times a game without blinking in 2009.

Because Moore has some pass-catching ability, we expect him on the field a lot more often than Willie Parker. However, the team’s long-snapper is on the field more often than Willie Parker these days, so that’s not saying all that much.

And why does he only average 3 carries per game? Sounds a lot like Jamaal Charles before the whole Larry Johnson incident. Are they under-utilizing Moore?

(Raiders game 1 should be listed here, 409 yds off, we let them off the hook)
(Cowboy's should be listed here - They are who we thought they were)

My answer is… that’s ESPN for you…they don’t always know what they are talking about….

Moore has been solid whenever he has been asked to step up, but his role isn’t to be an explosive runner, its to pick up third and shorts, block and catch the screen passes and make some plays when needed. He has past the point in his career when he would ever have the chance to be a feature back, but that is why Pittsburgh scooped him up on the cheap and he has done nothing but be one of the best third down backs in the league since his arrival in the Steel City.

Is Moore under-utilized? Perhaps but when you have a 1st round draft pick that is averaging 5.4 yards per carry, two receivers in the top 10 in the league in terms of receiving yards (Ward, Holmes), and another wide-out who is averaging 17.4 yards per catch (Wallace), you just don’t always get to use everyone as much as you would like.

also,

because I called Arians and told him I need Ben to always, always tear it up for my fantasy team. Needless to say, this week wasn’t real good to me.

Thanks

From your response and the one milkshake provides, my sense is that the preference is to throw the ball early in many instances. And that the tendency is to give up on the running game when it’s not showing early success. I don’t think that it’s a bad thing that the Steelers throw the ball more now than in years past, but with your D, I see no reason to give up on running the ball in almost any situation.

Frankly, I can’t stand the Broncos, Chargers, Colts, Bengals, Ravens and Patriots. So, I find myself rooting for the Steelers by default. (Well that and a lingering mancrush on Cowher) I hope you commit more to the run as the season wears on (and the weather worsens) as I think that’s your best path back to the SB.

This is my signature line. It is full of awesome and win.

We know that

Can I forward your thoughts to Bruce Arians? Maybe he’ll listen to you.

Raiders beat Philly

Gives me hope that the Steelers will be looking past us to other opponents down the sched. Maybe if they underestimate us we’ll have a shot.

Philly just plays horrible on their west-coast trips

Unfortunately I think Tomlin will have them ready to go.

Predictions:

Kansas City will not win more than four games in 2009
Kansas City will have a new OC and DC in 2010
Kansas City will win at least seven games in 2010

I think we did enough “looking past” the opponent last weekend. I don’t see that happening again any time soon.

Yea, we thought we were watching a Chiefs game

OK, not really, but imagine watching that kind of offense every week

The Haley Superbowl Experience against the Steelers

I know…two different teams with very different personnel! However, I believe Haley’s experience with the Steelers will help us this weekend. What say you?

Na im kidding

I would just be happy with a solid performance, Maybe we can keep it close and respectable. Thats all I want is a solid performance.
