Dwayne Bowe Suspended for Four Games

We'll be updating this. Via Kent Babb:

Dwayne Bowe has been suspended four games for violating the league's policy on performance-enhancing substances.

The Chiefs have confirmed the move.

It was reported earlier this season that Bowe had switched agents now being represented by Todd France.

This means that Bowe has either applied an internal appeal (and lost) or chose not to appeal.  It's possible this has been going on for months, even dating back to last season.

Bob Gretz wonders what could have happened with Bowe.

"Players can face suspension for performance enhancing substances for testing positive for anabolic steroids, or certain diuretics that are considered masking agents. Players can also be suspended for failing to show up for testing."

As Gretz points out, the last Chief to be suspended for something like this was John Welbourn in the beginning of the 2006 season.

More coming....Check this post.

oh well, let's be real here.

who doesn’t use steroids in the NFL? Seriously you can’t compete if you don’t.

Probably not steroids

Or at least the traditional steroids. It’ll be interesting to see what this is.

This goes back to the issues with the "Williams' Wall" lawsuit.

Does anyone have any good info on why testing positive for a diuretic = testing positive for steroids? From what I read on NFP, ESPN etc. on their problems, the connection between the two isn’t all that strong.

Williams wall suit

Had more to do with the rights of employees in one state to be drug tested. Nothing at all to do with the substance.

Predictions for 2009:

The Chiefs will regret cutting LJ

Bowe's numbers regress due to lack of decent QB play.

The D gets better in the second half but still is plagued by big plays

Cassel looks more like the guy Pioli almost cut in the '08 preseason instead of the franchise QB he hoped he would be when he traded him for

testing positive for a diaretic....

…. does NOT = testing positive for steroids.

The diaretics in question were on the banned substance lists because they had things in them that are KNOWN masking agents. (Meaning substences that are taken by players to hide steroids, so they won’t piss positive for steriods)

I’m not commenting on wether or not Bowe was taking steroids, because I don’t have a clue; but testing positive for a substence on the banned substence list does not necessairly mean testing positive for steroids or any other illegal drug. There are things on the banned substence list that are completely legal, and can be bought at your local GNC or grocery store pharmacy. Banned by the NFL is not the same as illegal.

I think the NFL recognizes the various things it “could be” instead of drugs but I think they’re pretty sure they got him or they wouldn’t bother. NFL has one of the best drug policies in all of professional sports.

Letting drugs that give unfair advantage, especially ones detrimental to their health, would create an environment where you HAD to take roids to compete.

Barry Bonds entered the MLB....

wearing a size 7 1/2 hat.

He exited the MLB wearing a size 14.

Tell me again how he wasn’t taking steroids. Even his HEAD got bigger. (Although I bet his condom size got smaller)
He lied about it again and again and again in the media, to the fans, and even to congress. Barry Bonds got off easy.

If he was taking some concotion of legal vitamins that happened to contain one or more items on the banned substense list that were NOT steroids then I’ll be upset at him for not reading the label or contacting the NFL to ask if the vitamins were ok to take….. but it won’t be anything like the venom I’d have for a play knowingly and intentionally taking an illegal steriod.

And, ironically ...

Per Joel (ie: not me):

Adam Schefter of ESPN is sifting through the current situation with Dwayne Bowe that has him suspended for four games by the NFL. Per Schefter, Bowe likely took something to help him lose weight, similar to the situation with Kevin and Pat Williams in Minnesota.

“From what I gather,” Schefter tweets, “Chiefs WR Dwayne Bowe was trying to lose weight in training camp and took a diuretic.” …

The irony in all this is that head coach Todd Haley ran what he called the toughest training camp in the NFL and demanded many players lose weight. Haley has said the Chiefs as a team lost over 800 pounds.

Bowe was reportedly one of those players who had to lose weight. I’ve heard (but haven’t confirmed) that he was asked to lose over 20 pounds.
So, it is Haley’s fault.

Cassel....

But would you want to wear that??

Predictions for 2009:

The Chiefs will regret cutting LJ

Bowe's numbers regress due to lack of decent QB play.

The D gets better in the second half but still is plagued by big plays

Cassel looks more like the guy Pioli almost cut in the '08 preseason instead of the franchise QB he hoped he would be when he traded him for

If this is true

and it was steroids or something similar, then I’m really disappointed in D-Bowe. He was/is my favorite Chief, but I am so against cheating of this sort that I’d find it difficult to stand by him. This just makes me sad.

who was a mid-season pick up and has played two games, and couldnt even cut it on his last team…..damn…thanks Bowe

From what I've read Chambers wasn't cut because he "couldn't cut it"

it was because of his off the field issues.

funny, we dont cut LJ for five yrs with his off the field issues, but chambers gets cut for going through a rough divorce…..shows the difference in organizations

I wasnt really knocking Chambers guys...

I was just saying how sad it is that our NO 1 reciever barely knows our offense after two games…I like Chambers

by KCinAZ on Nov 17, 2009 1:14 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

For those who thinks this makes a difference for Sunday...

please. It isn’t like he was tearing up the league. Well, in drops maybe. We won’t notice any difference in the offense. Bradley can drop just as many balls as Bowe, Cassel can still run into his RB, and the defense can’t tackle anybody. Not sure how Bowe fits into that line of problems.

I remember Dawson to Taylor, Kenney to Carson, and Blackledge catching the snap in his facemask. Seen it all...

Good point

except bowe is a playmaker

by kcchiefs19 on Nov 17, 2009 1:11 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Those 2 plays haven't helped win much.

He has made a couple of plays, but I think his drops may have cost us more. Either way, he certainly hasn’t been a difference maker. We have way too many problems besides WR. It’s not like the game could be in the balance with him in the lineup…

That's bull crap

The rest of the team lost weight, you don’t see them getting busted. This one’s Bowe’s fault and his fault only.

by RA_ChiefsFan on Nov 17, 2009 1:14 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

yes they didnt get "busted"

but who knows how many actually used them. Haley put way to much pressure on losing alot of wieght really quick and this is what resulted from it

That’s what happens when a GM (Peterson) and a head coach (Herm) let their players get fat and lazy.

but to loose as much wieght as they did in such a short amount of time it doesnt suprise me that this happend

Bowe came in 25lbs over his playing weight last year

I don’t see how that can be Haleys fault.

in addition

it was a well noted fact that Haley was driving Bowe extremly hard during preseason camps.

what is the specific substance??

by deflep1691 on Nov 17, 2009 1:26 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

It does not matter about the specific substance. It is banned by the league.

You make millions playing a game. The most regulated game in the world. You need to know all the rules. You just go ahead and hate on Haley. I will always blame myself first for my mistakes. It’s on Bowe. The end.

there are shads of grey

obviously or else the williams would not be in court. and im not a haley hater. i like him as a coach. im just throwing out the very real possibility. the facts match that thier could have been a chance of what im saying.

no thats not what im saying at all.

we dont know all the facts so to automatically say this is only bowes fault would be ill advised

by deflep1691 on Nov 17, 2009 1:30 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

We know all the facts

The banned substence was found INSIDE Dwayne Bowe.

What other facts do you need?
The only way this could be Haley’s fault is if Haley was sneaking into Bowe’s room at night and secretly injecting him or spiking his morning orange juice with a banned substence.

If that wasn’t happeing then the banned substence go INSIDE Bowe because BOWE was taking a banned substence. That makes it Bowe’s fault. It doens’t matter one single bit WHY he was taking it. It’s against the rules, and he chose to take it. That makes it his fault.

As far as “shades of gray” goes – There aren’t any in this case. It’s simple black and white. Either he took a banned substence or he didn’t. If he did then he stands up like a man and says “I took it. I’ll suffer the consequneces”

We already have enough people in this world that refuse to take responcibility for their own action. We don’t need anyone else making excuses FOR them.

per Schefter on Twitter:

Adam_Schefter

From what I gather, Chiefs WR Dwayne Bowe was trying to lose weight in training camp and took a diuretic.

Adam_Schefter

Bowe found out about his suspension earlier this month and has decided not to appeal it. He knows those are battles players don’t win.

Adam_Schefter

So there it is. Now we know why the Chiefs claimed wide receiver Chris Chambers off waivers. They knew Bowe suspension was coming.

All of a sudden

The Arrowhead lock down by Pioli makes sense. He didn’t want this getting leaked out. (The Bowe situation has to have been going through investigations and such for quite a while). Wow. I wonder what other issues are going on in there.

This continues to be a massive rebuild by Pioli and Haley. Props to them for winning at least 2 so far.

I like bowe, but I will say, if there is a year to have this happen, let it be when we stink…although it makes the charger game in two weeks that less exciting to watch unless chambers rips them apart…

Ive seen these guys work, the ones who need a pill to lose weight, arent working hard enough…especially in the offseason…I saw it happen with Jesse Chatman, wasnt in shape, had a chance, bye bye…guy refused to eat right, lose weight etc…
