I think Todd Haley's going to blow a gasket on the sidelines soon. Good for him, winning his second NFL game in Oakland Sunday, but if he wants to last in this job, he needs to learn to swallow some of the anger. He really laid into Matt Cassel at one point in Oakland -- and that's in a win.

Not to mention his blow up at mo carthon.

F*** you Mo!!

He needs to control himself if he wants a controlled team. I think he can be a good coach but he has some learning to do.

You yell enoug and people start to go deaf and they can’t hear you.

This cant be any truer...
You yell enough and people start to go deaf and they can’t hear you.

Winning begins with Attitude - Haley and Pioli will be winners in KC!

I'll forever be a Chiefs fan! Only God himself could take that away from me, but when I get to my great reward, I'll rejoin two bigger fans, my Mom and Dad.

I love Todd Haley

Does anyone have footage of him after that timeout? I could use a slow-motion GIF of him cussing out Mo Carthon. I don’t know what he did, but I lol’d.

by Nick Britt on Nov 16, 2009 10:23 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I think Carthon called the timeout

on the fourth down play (that never happened) when Russel dropped the ball. After the timeout the Raiders punted. We lost a bunch of field position over that timeout!

If you don't recount the problems and issues of the past you are doomed to repeat them!!!!!!!

I didn't think asst coaches could call TOs

I thought it had to be a player on the field or the head coach.

by Nick Britt on Nov 16, 2009 12:24 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Apparently Peter King didn't wattch the game.

Yeah, it was a win, but if we had been playing anyone but the Raiders we would have lost. Winning in spite of 3 turnovers on the road is almost unheard of. Cassel deserved to be chewed out. He had a bad game.

But, like I said before, I doubt Haley will blow a gasket. His head is more likely to spontaneously combust, having all the flesh melt off his face and his hair catch on fire. Then our coach would be Ghost Rider. That would be freaking sweet.

It's years like this that I wish I was a bear. Hibernation would make it so much easier.

Agreed

“Eff you” doesn’t really help to get your point across in a positive way. All that’s going to get you is an “eff you” in return…whether it’s said verbally or just as an attitude.

Haley needs to learn that the volume of the message is not nearly as important as the message itself.

The f-bomb is not acceptable

The rest of the stuff is. Someone else mentioned Cowher, and I can really remember a whole lot of blood-vessel-testing rage from Cowher over the years. I don’t think it’s as counter-productive as some on here think, except when it involves unconstructive things like f-bombing the assistants.

There’s a defensive coordinator for Texas who yelled his head off and almost lost it when his second- and third-team defensive players gave up two garbage-time touchdowns to Baylor in a blowout win. I thought that was a good sign, not a bad one.

Cassel deserved the chew-out. Carthon might have as well, but it should’ve come as an angry-but-constructive admonishment, not a bridge-burner.

Talk about a 180..

Part of me is relieved and another part of me wants to tell him to chill out. The days of Herm just standing there like a statue are CERTAINLY gone. I guess be careful what you wish for…I for one like his passion. But I also know great coaches who have never cursed. As time passes, I bet we see a more laid back and calculated version of F you and MF this and that etc…

A win is a win for now…GO CHIEFS!!!

by KCLonghorn on Nov 16, 2009 10:05 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

Yeah.

He needs to realize that he is not coaching kids. Grown men dont react the same to an ass chewing. Even if they dont say it, they are thinking, “f*** you too”. Also , it does not make someone perform better. Take Savage for instance. He dropped the pass, Haley chewed his ass, threatened to take him out of the game, then he goes out and fumbles the kick. He was not focused on catching the ball, his mindset was I better not drop this…..thats two very different things!

by KCinAZ on Nov 16, 2009 10:05 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

Haley chewed his ass after he dropped the kick.

But it says something that Savage was still returning kicks after the fumble. Haley wants his guys to be just as upset when they screw up that way they go out and do better. Look at Jamarcus Russell after he kept making mistake after mistake, no emotion, even the inept announcers noticed after they pulled him that Jamarcus looked like he didn’t care. It’s good that these guys know they messed up and that mistakes won’t go unnoticed.

by RA_ChiefsFan on Nov 16, 2009 10:12 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

first he dropped a screen pass that hit him right in the chest...

haley told him as he came off the field, “you dont want to play today,do you”…..than he dropped the punt

by KCinAZ on Nov 16, 2009 10:38 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Now that I think about it, I believe you're right...

but I think Savage’s fumble had to do more with him thinking about running up the field than what Haley said. And like I said, Haley could’ve pulled him from the game after that and in fact I was surprised to see him out there again returning punts but most importantly he didn’t fumble after that.

by RA_ChiefsFan on Nov 16, 2009 10:43 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Savage misjudged the punt

And tried to catch it on the run. That was a HS mistake.

We definitely need a punt returner.

I like Dantrell…he plays with a lot of heart, but you gotta wonder whether he has the talent to play in this league.

A lot of you will hate to hear this but Whitlock made a great point awhile back..

“It’s worth mentioning again that other coaches have faced the crisis staring at Haley and Pioli. Dick Vermeil almost flopped in St. Louis because his first two years, he had all the questions and answers. Tom Coughlin almost bombed in New York for the same reason.

Vermeil and Coughlin changed. They realized today’s NFL is a partnership with the players, who have little fear and increased leverage.

Will Pioli and Haley change? I don’t know them well enough to offer a credible guess. They remind me a little bit of legacy frat boys. Those guys never change. They think success is their birthright and people without their bloodlines are beneath them."

This was in the article posted on AP just about a week ago where everyone bitched and screamed about how Whitlock is a total idiot. He says some crazy things but bottom line he makes a lot of great points a lot of kool aid drinkers on this site just don’t want to hear

Huh, that’s funny cause some people say the same thing about Whitlock. It’s amazing how his criticisms are becoming more about personal experiences than actual facts. He really needs to let go of his anger just because the Chiefs give him the same amount of time and info as other reporters.

by CaptainPoopDeck on Nov 16, 2009 10:40 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

By everyone you mean

Savage who dropped an easy catch and blowing a fresh set of downs. Bowe who lined up wrong thus causing us to burn a time out. Cassel who seemed like he didn’t want to give the ball to Charles on that run play. And Carthon who called an unnecessary time-out that would’ve resulted in a turnover on downs?

My point is, it’s not like he’s yelling at everyone just for the sake of yelling. You don’t see him yelling at the guys who are doing their job and making plays. I’ll take his yelling at players who screw up, or looks of disgust at botched plays or dropped passes because that’s what I’m feeling too when I watch it. And I’d rather have a coach who feels the same disappointment and expresses it as opposed to Herm’s staring up at the scoreboard, “Huh, I totally don’t know why we’re losing this game” look.

One always comes before the other. Like I said I don’t think its a necessarily a bad thing, but from what my beautiful wide eyes have seen on the field its clear Haley might want to try adjusting a bit to this team because his messages aren’t coming through. I’m seeing lots of repeat mistakes like not even being able to snap the ball on time. Guess that “Snap the FUCKING BALL” speech didn’t go through so well hahaha (damn football players can be dumb). I think Bowe is playing marginally better

I think hes vastly under utilized in this offense. Cassel is inconsistent. The only thing hes consistent for is one delay of game each game (so it seems, not sure how factual that is). I’m also sure much of the blame could be put on Haley but Cassel needs to step up as a leader and call a play himself or call a timeout

Haley is too entertaining to swallow his tongue. maybe in future seasons when the Chiefs can contend, but by all means, let Haley have at them.

by xchiefsx on Nov 16, 2009 10:13 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

One of the blow-ups...

Was clearly directed at D Bowe for lining up incorrectly (in the red zone I believe), which resulted in a timeout. He unloaded on Bowe initially with about 4 f-bombs…moments later they showed Haley on the sidline coaching him up. I don’t have a problem with this really.

It’s easy to point out the overreactions because they are so obvious. In the end its what Haley does to correct the issues that’s most important to this team going forward.

by Johnny Chimpo on Nov 16, 2009 10:18 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

Exactly...

Seems like in every game so far there’s been a clip of him blowing up at a player only to have another clip of him sitting down or talking with the same player trying to get them ready for the next series. There was another clip from yesterday, I think it was after the botched hand off from Cassel, where he was sitting with him talking calmly. It’s like ever since the Haley/Boldin playoff incident last year the camera crews are trained on him waiting for drama.

by RA_ChiefsFan on Nov 16, 2009 10:24 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Camera cutting to him talking to DBowe on the bench was great.

The players are beginning to trust Haley because they’re seeing that his way is building towards improvement. Bowe is a better player because of Haley. Hali is a better player. Charles is a better player. Pope, Long, Gilberry, Studebaker….these guys are all responding to Coach Haley and playing better and better because of it.

The Bernard Pollards, the Larry Johnsons…these guys want to play & party on the field. This isn’t Herm’s Playhouse anymore. This is a football team again.

disagree wholeheartedly

with your disagreement.

I think it makes Haley look like an ass. That’s not to say that I think he’s an ass…I think he could become a good coach someday. But, there are times on the sideline that he looks like one.

He needs to turn it down a notch or two. You can yell at a player, and chew on them for a mistake…without looking like a lunatic.

by Scott B. on Nov 16, 2009 10:21 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

You mean like when...

He simply told Savage, without yelling or waving arms up and down, “You don’t want to play today do you?” after that dropped kickoff?

Or when he just looked at Cassel after that botched hand off and said, “That’s on you, that’s all on you.” without yelling. Face it, the camera crew is waiting for Haley to yell cause they think it’ll make good drama or something. But I’ve also seen time and time again Haley going up to his players and praising them for doing good, these moments just go unnoticed by the camera crew and play callers.

by RA_ChiefsFan on Nov 16, 2009 10:29 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Haley will calm down

When his team starts performing. He will also get the players that can respond to his type of coaching.

Haley is getting advice from Bill Parcells, Scott Pioli, Dick Haley, and many others who have forgotten more about football than Peter King or Jason Whitlock combined will every know.

He knows what he is doing. He will be strict until he no longer has to. Coughlin didn’t change — his team got better. The same thing will happen with Haley.

Weird....Cowher, Fisher, Parcells, Coughlin, are allowed to yell...

…but Haley can’t? This is all just a bunch of reporters with nothing to write about. Haley’s outbursts give them something to type in response to. It’s easy to play devil’s advocate and go against the grain….it’s not easy to change a losing culture with an organization that’s lost so many games over the last few years because there was no discipline from authority.

Haley is changing the tune in Kansas City. If he has to yell and scream and cuss to get these players to focus their minds on playing great football, I’m ok with that. In fact, I encourage it.

I agree...

unfortunately the counter argument from others is always, “yeah but those guys have earned it because they win and therefore when they yell their team still respects them”. Both Tom Landry and Vince Lombardi were successful coaches.

I’ll take successful over unsuccessful, but I really don’t care about passionate vs. dispassionate. I think either one can be extremely successful.

I think Haley should get a chance to find out what works best for him and the team. That should be a minimum of three seasons, and by that point I think we’ll see a slightly moderated version of what we’re seeing on the KC sidelines these days.

by burntorangehorn on Nov 16, 2009 11:18 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

It's all about TV Drama

The Producers of the broadcast make sure that at least one camera is on Haley at all times so they can catch any moment like they did last season, to them it makes good TV and that’s what their business is. Yes they are showing the game but the job is to make even a bad game watchable but catching anything out of the norm. They know if a Chiefs player screws up bad enough Haley will react, it’s what they are watching for. How many times during the game did they show Cable even talking with his players? I didn’t see any myself and why is that? Because they know Cable aint going to slug his coaches on camera, He saves it for Practice.

As bad as some of the plays were yesterday I was yelling and cussing at some of the Chiefs players, and I know they could not hear me nor was I on Camera. I see a lot of people down on Haley for all of this yelling but I ask you… While you were watching the game did you just sit there quietly and tell yourself “we’ll get them next time”? If you did The Herm was your Man and I don’t want to watch the Chiefs with you. I get into the Game I yell, I cheer, I bitch and I cuss, it is just how I react to what’s going on and I guess I react as I do because I care what happens and sometimes I go to far but that’s just me.

I think too much is made of all this, I want a Coach that’s fired up. I want a Coach that is going to fire up the Players, even if that means jumping their shit when the mess up. You saw two coaches yesterday, tow different styles and two different results. I myself was glad Haley was on our side.

In Pregame yesterday Haley told the broadcasters that He didn’t want both jobs of Head Coach and Offensive Coordinator, He told the that Galey was removed over a coaching philosophy, I believe that. I think He knows damn well that He needs to bring in someone, but it has to be someone on the same page as the Head Coach, as it has to be with every team in the NFL. The time Haley came in was too late to get another Coordinator so He tried using Galey who was already in place, that wasn’t working. This off season I’m sure the Chiefs will find someone and Haley can go on to do the Job he was hired for. So take all this with a grain of salt things are changing, we just have to wait it out.

is it me? or isn't about time the Lamar Hunt trophy belonged to His team?

This Chiefs team is closer to a new expansion team than it is a playoff contender, your expectations should match that.

by KC Fanatic on Nov 16, 2009 11:08 AM CST reply actions   1 recs

Sorry... but the TV directors aren't focusing on Haley

because of his demeanor. They’re focusing on him because he’s the head coach. Period.

Did we see fewer shots of Herm Edwards last year because he didn’t blow up on the sidelines? No, we didn’t. We saw just as many “reaction shots” as we are seeing this year. Did we see fewer reaction shots of Tom Cable yesterday than we saw of Haley? No. This is simply what TV directors do. People want to see drama in the games, and including shots of how the coach reacts to what happens on the field helps create that drama.

So please… enough with this business that the TV coverage is focusing on Haley because he might blow up. It’s not. It’s focusing on Haley because he’s the head coach.

You're talking about AFTER the game

Sure… in the highlights, a coach raising hell on the sidelines is more interesting than a coach just standing there. But it doesn’t change the facts: TV directors have cameras on both head coaches all the time, and they put those cameras on the air whenever something happens that might cause a reaction.

All this bitching is getting obnoxious.

I know loosing sucks, but bitching after a win?

Come on.

It wasn’t the encouraging blowout I was hoping for but everyone seems like they want this team to fail. Until you can get off the keyboard and into the NFL, how about you stop being so critical of someones coaching style. All you have about what works is your speculation. What I see when I watch Haley talking to Bowe and Cassel after their chew outs are players responding and being accountable for their play.

Last time I checked, we have the same amount of wins halfway into the season as we did last year. Chill out.

I care,

and many others. I’ll take a win, but that doesn’t mean the team shouldn’t play better than they did yesterday.

Will you be ok if they play that way this Sunday? No, it’s not acceptable. Win, or no win they played like crap.

I’m not saying anyone should overlook the way they played. It was ugly. It’s just the attitude of “They won by a fluke so big deal” I have an issue with. It’s still a win. They could have just as easily lost the game but they didn’t. That has to count for something.

No I won’t be happy if they play like that this week but honestly, I fully expect the Steelers to kill them no matter what. It’s just a question of seeing something, anything, positive to take from the game.

Look...

If we win, he can yell all he wants. Me I like a coach that looks like he gives a shit…Much improved over last years regime.

No one ever says, "It's only a game" when their team is winning.

The new motto can be

“Chiefs Football. Even when we lose, everyone gets a sucker.”

So

There’s no middle ground between where Haley is right now…and the lollipops and rainbows? Nowhere in between…where he could do his job effectively, but not have a meltdown when a player make a mistake?

I guess I stand corrected. Carry on.

Ohwell.

I think its funny though. Did anybody else see Haley yell at Mo Carthon? “Fuck off Mo, fuck you!”

Mo was standin around like..what did I do to deserve that?! ahahaha

Haley reminds me of me....

on a golf course. Possibly a carryover from his time in that sport.

This will probably sound stupid, but that's probably no different then normal

I like “crazy angry” Haley for this first season. This team has become stuck in a losing mentality. We won 6 games total the last 2 years coming into this year. We still haven’t won at Arrowhead in forever. We needed someone to come in and just blow this crap up. We need someone to kick people in the a$$ when they mess up. Under Herm it was “that’s okay” all the time. ITS NOT OK. Don’t be lazy, don’t be stupid, don’t suck, etc. Let’s find out who can man up and take the heat. Those that can will have a future hear the rest can hit the road. Then when we have a team that can actually play worth a crap he can mellow out a little.

Puttin' a lid on it is the surest way to blow a gasket.

Stupid article. Haley expresses it right away, which is the way to do it, if you ask me.

And anger mgmt is for guys who want to have a REAL anger problem and pay therapists for the rest of their lives.

No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.
