The difference between highlights and bloopers!
For the past 4 weeks (bi-week excluded), Deion Sanders and Michael Irvin have been enjoying themselves at our expense. Now, I'm not complaining, I think it's funny but sad and true at the same time. Every time they are getting ready to show Chiefs "highlights" Deion usually says something to the effect of "oh man, do we have to"? "they don't have any highlights". "this is going to be awful".
Yes that's how they introduce our "highlight reel" each week after the game on channel 212 DirecTV. It would bother me I guess, if it were untrue or unmerited. But the truth is we don't have "highlights" this year. We have blooper reels after our games. Well, it's true.
I'm as happy that we have a win as anyone else. But that's where it stops. I'm not happy with anything other than the actual "W" in the column. The game against Oakland is not something to walk away from feeling encouraged. If that's what we are, if Sunday is the indicator of our identity as a team, we should petition Clark to change our name to the Kansas City Keystone Cops. Or maybe the KC stooges.
What happened on Sunday was not a prelude to a cool highlight reel, it was more bloopers. Here's why I am discouraged after the win.
We went 1 for 15 on third down conversions. That is pathetic. We have been outscored 62-9 in the first quarter this season. Did our defense do a good job? No. We were defending a Raiders offense that hasn't scored more than a single TD in EIGHT STRAIGHT games. We have won only 5 of our last 35 games. Think about it. 3 of those wins come via the Raiders. It's what we do. We beat the Raiders. Big deal.
If it wasn't my beloved Chiefs, it would have been worth DVR'ing the games just for the comedy value. It was like watching two blindfolded monkeys swinging a bat at a pinata they can't locate and hitting each other and themselves instead. It would have been absolutley hilarious if it was any other team.
The Raiders punted 11 times for God sakes. Remember the Colts Chiefs playoff shootout in the Vermeil era. The team with the ball scored every time. I doubt we punted 11 times in 8 games that year, let alone one game. So put that into perspective for a second. If it was our defense actually causing them to punt, good for us, but it wasn't. It was them imploding. If they would have caught even 50% of the passes they had thrown at them, they would have clobbered us.
44 of the 100+ yards for Charles came on one play and on 4th down at that. I'm not questioning the play call there, I'm simply pointing out that most teams do that stuff on their first 3 downs. But when you always end up in 4th down, you have to go for it sometimes. You can't win by punting the other team to death. It's not to our credit that we had to get in 4th down in the first place and feel forced to go for it to have a chance to beat the pathetic excuse of a team in Oakland.
We were disheveled and confused looking once again. Haley's inconsistent play calling was glaringly bad in this game.
WE had 5 penalties and 3 turnovers via 2 fumbles and an int. Horrible, just horrible that's all you can say. Honestly. This is not improvement. This is not better. Again, I say we've had half a season to get it right and here we are shoveling poop out of the stats basement again. Really, we're worse in almost every category than the Rams. What is that about?
Why didn't our talent evaluating genius' see that Charles should have been our starter at RB before we were on tract to have the WORST rushing yardage per carry average in the HISTORY of the NFL with Mr. 2.7? That is another worst "EVER" record we achieved. EVER!!
This is our team, this is our coach and our organization. What you see is what you get. Not what you want to see, or what you want to believe. You get what you SEE! I see a very poorly coached team on offense and defense and a bunch of confused players who don't know their role.
Congratulations to the Chiefs for stepping aside and getting out of the way so Oakland could destroy themselves worse than we did. Hey, it's a win, and that's cool, but it's not something to feel encouraged about. We should be playing better than this. We should play like we know our playbook by now. Like we understand what we're doing out there. These are professionals, not amateurs. When your in a professional sport, with other professionals and your paid like one, you should perform like one. It's not something to get all gaga over just because we did what we're supposed to do. We shouldn't look like the less shitty team doing it either. In short we should demand better here in KC. Rookie HC or not, here we go again.
I think it would be nice to have one Sunday post game show with some real "highlights" instead of bloopers, don't you?
Go Chiefs!

And I didn't even mention the 75 missed sacks because we can't tackle a stationary target
or the fumble for a 25 yd gain because half our team bobbled the ball instead of falling on it. It took a big boy in Brian Waters to run it down and finally stop the embarrassment by getting on the ball.
Geez. this has nothing to do with Haley’s learning curve. You shouldn’t be in a position to coach an NFL team if your not prepared for the job.
My goodness Kray
Over the past 10 weeks (or even the better part of three years) we have seen our boys fall down, get up, not quit, fall down and LOSE. I’m just happy with a win. Happy it was against the Raiders. This kind of makes up for that first game, when we actually looked decent, but didn’t get the W. A few observations:
- Haley embarasses me a little bit with his F*&K YOU tirades. Act like you’ve been there before… treat your subordinates with respect. It’s a basic tenant for leadership.
- I think Cassel played pretty well. Most of his passes were on target. Maybe I’m just comparing him to JaClueless.
- Didn’t miss 2.7 at all.
Two more wins comiong this season. Cleveland and the Broncos. Because we always split with the Broncos.
Yup
in both of our wins there were no true highlights… And I’m sick of Haley lining us up in the shotgun on first down when our blocking is looking better and were running the ball decent..
Well I agree Kray
We’ll see the return of the Keystone Cops when Pittsburgh comes to town. I have a feeling were in for another ass kickin. We play like that against Pitt, and we will get taken behind the woodshed and killed. Just hope Polamalu doesn’t play so Cassell will live to see week 12.
A little bi-polar today, kray?
Are you sure you didn’t mix up the nerve pills with the little blue ones?
I noticed yesterday that immediately after every KC "whoops"....
…CBS would immediately cut to a sideline shot of Haley!
