I know...we won...BUT...and the play calling...!!!
We should have lost that game. As bad as Oakland was, we allowed them to march down the field, make a few plays. If not for their latest first round bust, they would have had the ball at our 8 with less than a minute to go.
Previous to that, I was happy they went for it on 4th and 1, when Charles got that earlier TD. I was also happy they went for it later in the game (on another 4th down). But that play that they ran was horrendous. They rolled Cassel out, Bowe ran his own route in the other direction, and the only option was a TE Ryan, who was trying to block for Cassel if he was going to run. Then later in the game, on 1st and 10 (goal), their first play was a fumbled snap, the second, a bad handoff, and their third, a QB sneak? Are you kidding me? Is this how you finish the game? With Bowe Chambers, and Bradley, why couldn't you spread out the field, and hit a quick slant? Going up by 6 helps, but going up by 10 would have ended the game.
I really don't get a lot of Haley's play calls. One of the reasons that we were 1 for 15 on third downs, was because the play called only got us 75% of the way. On another particular 3rd and 2, they ran a play down the sidelines for Bowe. That was an easy play to defend for Oakland, 4th down. Why not a quick slant? How about a screen? Where are the high percentage, sure fire plays? I really think the play calling on Offense and Defense has been quite vanilla.
The only reason that we won, was because Russel, Bey, and the Raider organization is worse than ours. And, we still should have last today's game!

you don't apologize for any win
The only players I hurt with my words are the ones who have an inflated opinion of their ability. I can't worry about that.

Ryan wasn't in the game lol...
The playcalling was somewhat bad. Shoulda been a 19-10 victory.
Bowe and Wade FTW.
When you fail to prepare, you prepare to fail.
Poor execution and dropped passes makes the playcalling look worse then it is.
"Success is never ending, failure is never final."
Yes there were some great calls
and some bad, that 4th and 1 where charles went 45 yards how did yo like that play call?
Oh I was thrilled about that play call...
I mean why not? It seems to be our goal this year to not move the chains on our first 3 downs. SO if your goal is to botch up downs 1 thru 3 and then have to try and go for it on 4th down we were awesome.
I was definitely holding my breath on Oakland's last drive ... had Bey not fumbled, well ...
we could all be bitching still about yet another last minute Raider victory whew
Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisiton!
Good game!
Good teams find ways to win. Today you where the better team. Congrats
Well
I understand where you are coming from. And I know that you cant take it back now..
But in all fairness..DHB’s sideline catch on that last drive was out. I just think they ddint have enough to overturn it.
Tivo does wonders. from the front angle looking at the chest/hands of DHB, freeze the frame as soon as he has ahold of the ball. His right foot is down, his left foot is off the ground (he had JUST picked up his left foot AS he caught the ball) then his left comes back down out of bounds.
The announcers thought it would be overturned, the people i were with (including 1 raider fan) thought it was going to be overturned. I just dont see how that wasnt clear enough to be OT’d.
And yes, I was with a raider fan. Dont act like you dont have that 1 friend whos a bronco or raider fan. haha! In his defense, atleast hes FROM Oakland.
BTW, Flowers...
Got beat on a few plays…one, the bomb to DHB. DHB luckily dropped the ball, but my DVR showed me that I was wrong in thinking Flowers got his hands in there…he was beat on that play.
Its a win
Stop the goddamn bitching and enjoy.

I never understand the statement "we should have lost". Or "we should have won" for that matter.
We won. Bottom line. If we “should have lost”, then we would have. But we didn’t. Therefore, we should have, and did, win. Go Chiefs!!!!!!!!
The real question is...
would you take 10 of those? And then at least one in the playoffs? We all know we aren’t a great team loaded with all star talent, so we have to build on whatever we can and a win is a win.
Winning begins with Attitude - Haley and Pioli will be winners in KC!
I'll forever be a Chiefs fan! Only God himself could take that away from me, but when I get to my great reward, I'll rejoin two bigger fans, my Mom and Dad.
the real question is
how about you find an o-cord that has 90% of his play calls work and you let us know… we won the game and thats all i care about
People bitch if we loose and bitch if we win. Wow!!
Chiefs set an NFL record, most roster changes in 1 season.

it was an ugly win
and we pretty much suck. Lol. What do you expect?
Braccae illae virides cum subucula rosea et tunica Caledonia-quam elenganter concinnatur!
but we won...
did they want a convincing win that vaults us into playoff contention?! Unrealistic/realistic aside, we’ve been hungry just for a W. We have it, yet people aren’t satisfied…
And its still all a work in progress. The hiccups will still be there even if they win.
Can’t just iron it all out in one weekend or win…
there was no progress made...
If the Raiders, executed, they would have beaten us the same way that they did earlier in the year.
I disagree with this logic
“We should have lost”… “If they had a good QB they would have ripped us apart”… well guess what, they don’t have a good QB, they have JaWorthless Russell. The Chiefs were the better team today by sole virtue of the fact that they scored more points than the Raiders. There is nothing else that counts more. It’s a W, and it is equally important whether its 235-0 or 3-2.
Yes... it's a win, and I am happy to take it.
I’m not terribly worked up about the play calling in this game, though. For example… I thought the Charles TD was a very good call. The Raiders weren’t expecting it., and IMO, that’s part of the reason why it worked. But it was also executed quite well.
However… I thought the decision to go for it instead of kicking a field goal was a very bad mistake… one that easily could have cost the game. If you’re playing a team that’s been marching up and down the field putting TDs on the board all day, then maybe that’s a defensible decision. But that certainly wasn’t true of the Raiders in this game.
IMO… if you have a chance to put points on the board late in a close game – especially if it forces the other team to score twice – then by God, you take it.

The only reason that we won, was because Russel, Bey, and the Raider organization is worse than ours. And, we still should have last today’s game!
That logic is asinine and the argument is pointless. We can come back right back and say “well if we only had a better o-line we would have won by more!” or “if only we could get more pressure on the QB we would have won by more”
Cry Havoc! And let slip the Chiefs Defense of War!!!
ummm looked like just another raiders chiefs game to me
every faider vs the chiefs game looks like this it doesn’t matter how good both teams are they are still always ugly
and even in this ugly win i saw lots of positives Belcher(i find it peculiar that he lines up right next to the way more talented d.j. on special teams yet is always the one to get there hmmmm) Charles rushing the ball gotta love getting off the rushing td shnide. Chamber’s presence has freed up Bowe plus look at the amount of big plays downfield we are getting since chambers came aboard

ha ha...you lose..
you can’t make a one line emphatic statement like that and then misspell the word!!
You sir have been rebuked!
I agree with RDO..
I’m not going to get too worked up over some of the plays because I’m sure at this point Haley gets it, we are absolute garbage. So why not go for it? Why not mix it up? We gotta see what we’ve got before next years draft and FA trades.
However, not kicking the field goal was just plain stupid.
In the end I’ll tell you IMO why it matters HOW we played and WHY we did what we did.
You can’t call stupid plays against teams other than Washington and the Browns and Oakland. That’s why. We won’t get away with that shit in the future.
How can you act like it doesn’t matter?? What is wrong with everybody in KC? When did we become so conditioned to having a sub par team that we are ok with it? The NE/Indy game is not the same as our game against Oakland though. We werent’ facing the 8-0 Peyton Manning led Colts. So our play calling on 4th down is COMPLETELY different strategically than what Hoodie did in NE. We also don’t have Tom Brady or Welker or MOss or Faulk etc.
It makes a world of difference how we played and how we were coached. This is our team our staff our organization. This is what you get. If this is how we’re gonna play and be coached we’ll always be seeking excuses for our 4 win seasons. We won’t win here for another 10 years, then what? No, being a realist is better. Eyes wide open. Wide awake.
If we had not faced an enemy that dropped more passes than they completed we would have gotten dusted. I don’t want to beat Oakland every year and call it a season. I want the Superbowl don’t you? We aren’t going to get there this way for sure. We are just absolutley atrocious out there. We’re embarrassing.
The NFL world isn’t stupid. They know the ONLY reason we even had a 100 yd rushing game is because it was Oakland and 44 of that came on one big run. Which is okay, however you get them, but in the big picture we are still sunk. Oakland is not the bar by which other teams measure where their at. Oakland is another punk loser team like us.
It was like two handicap kids having a potato sack race. It was hard to watch us make fools out of ourselves only to be rewarded by the Raiders botching up play after play so we could stay alive. We were sooooo lucky. That’s not bitching or being negative. I don’t want my pinnacle for the season to be eeeeking out 2 wins and thank God Oakland beat themselves so we got the second one.
Cause we did NOT beat Oakland. They flat lost the game all on their own. Like we usually do. I think I’ve been more encouraged by games we lost but played better in. Dallas for sure, Baltimore. There were WAY more postives to take from those games than this sham win in Oakland. I’m glad we won, it made my weekend great. But let’s not get all giddy because we beat up a 12 year old girl. Especially when that 12 year old girl already kicked our ass by the bike racks after school this year. We SHOULD have won.
Well said, Krayfish
But I would just like to point out the time stamp on my post above: 10:23 pm. I didn’t turn the TV to the NE/Indy game until 10:30 – just as the Colts took posession for their final drive. I didn’t even know what had happened to give them the ball so deep in NE territory until it was explained later.
So when I said, “If you’re playing a team that’s been marching up and down the field putting TDs on the board all day, then maybe that’s a defensible decision,” I didn’t know Belichick had just provided a convenient example.
The commentators on NBC were unanimous: Belichick made a bad decision. But they thought so mostly because the gamble didn’t pay off. If it had worked, they’d very likely have been singing a different tune. Belichick knew that even if he punted, Manning might still have been able to march his offense down the field and score – that’s exactly what they had been doing for the whole fourth quarter. And Belichick also knew that his offense was more than capable of picking up a couple of yards on fourth down. So Belichick’s decision – though wrong in hindsight – was at least defensible. Todd Haley’s was not.

I disagree about Oakland beating themselves
Dont rationalize this win, The Chiefs earned it. Both of those TOs were forced TO. Ive been hearing everyone say “If they wouldnt have dropped those balls” but that just sint the case. Both plays were contested by Flowers and then Carr on the last ne. If either of those 2 were a step late then we dont get those picks.
Also, The raiders had plenty of stuff go there way, Indy Had plenty of stuff go there way, Cincy had plenty of stuff go there way, The Saints had plent of stuff go their way. Thats how football is.
You said if they catch those passes we would have been dusted, That may be true but what if we caught the passes we dropped? Would the outcome be different? Yes. Every game is filled with What ifs, but the truth is, They really dont matter in the end. We earned that victory by outplaying Oak Offensivly and Defensivly. I feel we shouldnt bash the team when they loss if were just gonna bash them when we win as well.

I have a problem with critizing Chiefs fans to harschly so I will try to be nice this time. Alot of fans on here have critized Haley throughout the season for several different things. Alot of people are mostly mad about the Draw plays we run alot. Dont you guys get it, We cant line up and run straight at them, Our o line is the worst run blocking line in the league. Draws get the defense out of position, aloowing our o line to get a jump on them.
Now, for the QB draw on 3rd and ten, Haley was obviously being conservative because of the fumble. If Haley would have threw a screen to Kolby or Charles and they fumbled it, The raiders would have tooken us to OT. Then everyone would be making post about Todd HAley’s play calling costing us the game.
As for the 4th down where Cassel ran to the side, threw it to Huff out of bounds. That was obviously a Broken play. Manning makes that throw to Bowe easy but Cassell is in his 1st year as a starter. Manning wouldnt have made that his 1st year either. Bowe broke off his route because he saw something and he was open. Hpopefully after they play well behind a good o line for a longer time they make that play.
As for the execution, Im sure Todd Haley has stressed it as much as he can. Thats on the team and not the Coaching staff. Now if Haley made excuses for the problems in pratice thats on his staff and him.
As for the timeout when Russell fumbled the snap. That was a TO Haley probably wishes he didnt call but still do you blame him? This team is not good, Im sure Russell would have got it if he didnt fumble. He was calling that TO to make Cable think, “Do I really want to do this” Thats a play the Chiefs give up 7/10 times easy.
We all bash Haley when we loss but give credit where its earned. You cant Bash a man when he does bad, Then Bash him when he does good. Haley isnt going anywhere for a couple years, so instead of bashing and giving up (been there) we should back them up.
OHANA!
Couldnt have said it better
I think its funny that when we almost win, all the people who criticize Haley pull the “good teams find a way to win” card and then when we pull out a close win they turn into hypocrites and pull the “We got lucky” card.
A win is a win. A loss is a loss.
And btw
it took Haley 10 games to get 2 wins…being a 1st year head coach..with 1st year schemes on BOTH sides of the ball..with a shit ton of 1st and 2nd year players/starters..with statistics in alot of areas that are actually worse than last year.
It took us 13 weeks to get 2 wins last year. So I’d say that so far, we’ve improved in the most important part of the game. Wins. And we still have Cleveland and Buffalo to play. We should win both of those games.
Sacks are also another improvement.
And the people that praise Herm need to remenber
Alot of the players Haley is putting on the Feild are Herm’s Guys.
OHANA!
I dont think this has much to do with herm
considering hes no longer here and his systems have been pitched out
I dont believe in “herms guys” or “vermeils guys” or “haleys guys”
Just because you are drafted by a certain coach doesnt mean you cant be talented for another coach. Dorsey might not have the traditional height of a 3-4 DE but hes doing a hell of a job considering hes only in his 2nd year, 1st year as a 3-4 DE.
Yeah Dorsey is doing ok
But compare that to guys who were brought in by Herm and are either not playing well or not even in the league. There is a difference between Herm Guys and Haley Guys. Just because Dorsey and Hali (Both 1st round picks) are doing good, it doesnt mean that Herm guys dont exist. Thats two out of the whole lot of players Herm brought in.
OHANA!
by darwithabar on Nov 18, 2009 11:05 AM CST up reply actions
...
thats not what i was talking about
My point was, just because Herm or Vermeil brought in somebody doesnt mean they arent good enough, or dont fit to play Haleys system.
Herm actually found us a legit secondary, but he wasnt playing them in the right system. He should have played a traditional 4-3 instead of a cover 2 variation. Page and Pollard in 1 draft, Flowers and Carr in another. Sure, Pollard isnt here anymore but isnt it funny that Pollard landed on a team where he can play as a run stopping strong safety and now hes excelling?
Anyways, my point hasnt changed. Just because a guy wasnt drafted or brought in by Haley doesnt mean he needs to be replaced. If the guy can play then he can play..who cares how he got to the team.
Correction...
it only took Haley 9 games to get 2 wins. We’re only 2-7 people…
Things to get the Chiefs back on the winning side of football:
1. Haley resign as offensive coordinator or do the following;
a. Feed JC more
b. Take the cuffs off of Cassel and let him air it out
2. Fire Clancy "Calls" Playslikeass
