How many key players for next year's team are currently on the roster?
From the FanPosts. -Chris
It appears that we are destined to read about 2.5 million posts about what FA we should sign and who we should select in next year's draft. It is my belief that these speculations are pretty pointless right now. There are several things we do not know that have too big of impact on things to make speculating worth while. Will there be a cap next year? If not, that changes what FAs will be available and how expensive the FAs on the market will be. Even more important is the number of key FAs that will resign with their current team and never hit the open market. Last, when we don't have any idea what the draft order will be and what underclassmen will declare, mock drafts are irrelevant. I love hearing scouting reports on players that people think would be good picks, but guessing who we will pick in what round just doesn't do it for me.
So how about we discuss something that still relates to next year's team, but that we can make a little more educated guess about.
How many key players / starters for next year's team are currently on our roster?
I'll define the key players as: all offensive and defensive starters (22 players), plus K, P, KR/PR, #2 RB, #3 WR, and nickel back. That makes 28 players total that we are talking about. I'll give my guess below and would love to hear what others think.
Players on offense that I think will be key players next year:
- Cassel
- Charles
- Bowe
- Chambers
- Long
- Albert
- Waters
- O'Callaghan
Not currently on team: RB (to split with Charles), FB, TE, C, and RG.
Players on defense that I think will be key players next year:
- Dorsey
- Jackson
- Hali
- Vrabel
- Mays
- Flowers
- Carr
Not currently on team: NT, ILB, FS, SS, and nickel back.
I do think Edwards, Williams, Belcher, and maybe Leggett will play roles, but off the bench.
I think we can all agree that our K and P are set. I think we need a KR/PR guy.
So I have 17 of the 28 "key positions" for next year's team as filled by players on our current roster. That means we would need to add 11 key players through the draft and FA. That is probably too many for one off season. If we're lucky we could MAYBE get 4 from the draft which would mean we would have to add 7 through FA. My guess is we will add more like 7-8 total through draft and FA, which means we will go into next year with starters in a hand-full of spots that are still not what we are looking for long term.
What do you guys think?

Great post.
Its nice to see a little bit of optimism around here and I think for the large part youre right on your analysis.
Couple changes that wouldnt surprise me would be Waters playing center next year or gone and Albert playing either LG or RT. Regardless though there are at least 2 offensive line holes that will need to be filled.
On defense I’d like to see Belcher develop and take Mays spot but again I think we need a game changer at ILB whether it be a top rookie or someone through free agency. Would also be nice to see Stude step up or another OLB be brought in to phase out Vrabel over time.
Again great post

Great post II
I like looking at it this way. I think we should think in terms of 3 holes to fill on OL to be on safe side. Waters is getting old. In true Patriot fashion, wouldn’t be too surprised to see him traded on draft day.

You make a sound logical post
I doubt you’ll sway many away from making their mock draft fan posts though.:) I think they’re fun to read. It’s a good indicator for what the perceived holes on this team are.
I do like your approach here. I’d say yous is as good a prediction of what carries over to next years roster and what holes will remain. I believe we’ll see more of the what we got this year though. One or two mid-high impact acquisitions and a whole lot of solid vanilla guys brought in. My big hope for player acquisition is that we land that one serious immediate impact stud on defense with our first round pick. I anticipate a fair amount of head scratching just like this year. While you can see why they brought some guy in, you can’t understand why they didn’t address a more pressing need elsewhere with other available prospects. I think we’ll be playing next year with some remaining gaps and we’ll all be pretty pissed about them screaming “FAIL” at Pioli. But overall, we should be better.
I believe the biggest team improvements for the Chiefs next year will come by way of coaching staff improvements. A new OC and DC and a QB coach will be a great start.

I would agree on the DC and the QB coach
but I think Haley will for sure be calling the plays again next year. I know people don’t think real highly of Haley right now, but he’s not stupid. He knew what a set back firing Chan and putting in his own system would be. The only reason he would of done that was so that his system would be in place moving forward after this season. To hire a new OC that would bring in his own system would make this entire season a waste on offense. If we do have an OC it will be someone like Carthon who will assist Haley in running his system.

I hope not
I believe (after watching Linehan do it in STL and others do it elsewhere) that the team needs to have a Head Coach AND an Offensive Coordinator. Haley should, IMO, bring in an OC that will call plays he would call in the situation. There could be 2-3 points in a game where his suggestion of a play call gets made, because he has shown a great mind for calling plays before coming to KC, but other than that the HC needs to perform HC duties.
by stlfan on Nov 14, 2009 2:17 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
I agree
I think he will as well. The way to approach it would be for him to bring in an offensive assistant that he can groom into the play calling role much the same way he was groomed in AZ. Like McDaniels was in New England. On the present staff, I’d agree that Carthon would appear to be that guy although I’m not real wild about that prospect.

This is just a stupid dream of mine
but I’ve said before that I would love to see Kurt Warner come work with Haley after he reitires (probably this year or next). The guys worked great together, they still talk and text each other (according to reports), the guy knows Haley’s system, and Warner just seems like the kind of player that would make a good coach.

If they could get DJ to step up i think he is in that discussion. I’d also like them to go out an get a new D coordinator. I hate watching zone D. I think our team is very athletic an could play a little more man to man an try to force some things to happen. instead of just letting other teams find the gaps an move down the field until they are backed up in the red zone.

I see your needs based on the current roster and would add Key^ aquisitions.
NT and FS would be the two must haves to improve this team.
The C and RG spots might be on the roster once we work through the 30,000 permutations of O-lineman lineups we currently have. Thx Mills.
FB and TE are not that big of needs if we have 3 WR’s that can play.

DJ depends on the Collective Bargaining Agreement
if they come to an agreement and he becomes a RFA I think he’s gone (barring he and Haley getting on the same page sometime in the next 8 games). If they don’t come to an agreement then he won’t be a FA and that changes things. I think they would trade him before the draft if they got a decent offer or use him in a rotation like this year.
I for one hope that they either work it out and he becomes an every down player or he’s gone so the issue can be put to bed.

He wouldn't become RFA
He’d be an unrestricted, not restricted, free agent. With the CBA renewed, it would take only four years. With no CBA, he’d be a year shy of the five needed, so he’d be RFA.
by burntorangehorn on Nov 14, 2009 2:44 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
I'll give you the benefit of the doubt because admittedly the whole thing confuses me
but I thought I read somewhere about him being a RFA this year unless it went to an uncapped year and then he would have to wait one more year. I may just be remembering wrong.
Feeling "The Love" and "Drinking the Kool AId"
by KCporkchop on Nov 14, 2009 2:49 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
UFA, not RFA
Under the CBA, a player becomes a restricted free agent (RFA) after three seasons in the league, assuming he’s not under contract for more seasons already. That is, if a guy is drafted and signs a three-year deal, he’s an RFA after he finishes the third year. If he’s drafted and signs a four-year deal, he’s unrestricted after finishing his fourth year.
BUT…if there’s no CBA, it takes five years to become a UFA. Finishing just three or four will only qualify as RFA, so the team retains the right to tender offers and to match other teams’ offers.

I agree with mostly everything
I think Vrabel is getting old. His pass rush skills have demnished greatly, and Mays is a god SP player, and backup ILB. That being said, heres a couple pieces I’d like to see the Chiefs bring in.
-Romeo Crennel as Defensive Cordinator
-Bring in a solid QB Coach
-At all cost, Sign Wilfork to anchor our 3-4
-Trade Dorsey for a 2nd (I like dorsey, but if we can get a high pick I’d be pleased)
-Draft Suh, Spikes, and Fox
I think these moves will help get the Chiefs going in the right direction

Either USC TE Mccoy, or Johnathan Dwyer in the 2nd. So that’s, Suh, Spikes, Fox, Dwyer or McCoy.

by mcclanahanman on Nov 14, 2009 9:01 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Not on the trade block he's not
Players almost never go for what they’re worth. Market value is pretty far below actual value. There are rare occasions when a guy goes for more than he’s worth (Cassel, D. Branch), but the vast majority of cases involving non-superstars (and Dorsey definitely isn’t a superstar at this point) end up with much later picks changing hands.
by burntorangehorn on Nov 15, 2009 2:23 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Why wouldnt he garner a 1st
He has been playing good this year. I have to disagree withj you on that. He has done better through out his career then Chiefs fans give him credit. I wouldnt trade him for 1ST STRAIGHT UP.

by darwithabar on Nov 14, 2009 11:55 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
See above
Playing well this year doesn’t mean he’d garner a 1st. Not even close. People commonly overrate the value of their favorite teams’ players, and that would be the case if one were expecting a first-round pick for a guy who is playing well, but not at a Pro Bowl level.

We would have our second ILB
If we started DJ. That would bring it down to 10 spots. I think we may also have some potentials on the team at filling the holes you suggested.
RB: Maybe Smith or Savage works out
FS: Maybe Page works out. He did pretty well the last couple of years. But h seems to be on the outs with the current regime
Nickleback; Hopefully Washington starts showing something. He definitely has the measureables to be an excellent CB in the league.
Everything else I agree with. I think we could address SS (Berry), C, and RG, with our first three draft picks.
I really do think if we use our two second round picks on interior O-linemen we could go from having one of the weakest lines in the league to one of the strongest.
Albert Waters DP DP O’Callaghan
Could be a very good line and with the exception of Waters would be very young.

haley/pioli seem to think that a majority of herm/carl’s guys are worthless. i understand wanting to build and do it your own way but i could swear they believe their football IQ is far more superior and that none of those guys can even play football. I don't see it that way
It has been said repeatedly from many different sources that a player has to not only have talent but be responsive to the coaching style. That is far less of an “ego” thing or thinking your “football IQ” is higher than it is needing people who can work together. This is the main reason why teams that repeatedly change coaches NEVER develop anything consistent.

Someone besides Twitlock verifies the 22 off the street story, as far as I’m concerned it either didn’t happen, or it isn’t accurate. If having a plan and working the plan is arrogant, then so be it. Fact is, you cannot rise to a high level in anything without having a lot of confidence, which many people perceive as arrogance. I may be just an arrogant ass myself, but don’t agree with that viewpoint.

i dunno
like i said, i like the way they want to shake things up and create a winning attitude/environment. just dont agree with all that has taken place. when you demand so much, then you dont produce yourself, it creates a lack of respect, and in turn…dissention in the locker room. if haley is going to turn things around, he knows he has to tweak a few things about himself. fear is a good motivator, but its not a great motivator.

actually one CAN deny that they came in with arrogance
I seem to read that all over this place but don’t understand why it’s such a strong theory. The “examples” I recall reading on here are the 22 story, the Waters story, the P/H secrecy methodology, umm I’m blanking – thought I had another.
Anyway, the 22 story and the Waters story are both unconfirmed as far as we know. There might be something to them but my guess is that we haven’t heard the whole story, certainly not from the “accused”. I’d like to hear both sides of these stories.
The secrecy isn’t arrogance, it’s just standard modis operandi in the NFL. Besides, being a fan doesn’t somehow entitle you to know the inner workings and strategy of the organization. Sorry to burst your bubble.

Your post that listed some of the top FAs at each position is a little different then the 100 posts we’ve seen over the last week or so that just say “We should draft this guy and sign this guy and then we’ll be awesome.” Sorry I got you worked up. Your post was well researched and fine, not that my opinion matters any more then yours.

Why does everyone keep saying 100 mock drafts`
A guy made a post where he went back and counted them and there was only 12
OHANA!
by darwithabar on Nov 15, 2009 12:00 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
I was surprised by that
It sure seems a lot more than that. Maybe it’s because everyone must respond and they put mock drafts in the comments. Nested mock drafts within mock drafts.
I still think we’re going to have 1776 of them by Draft Day. Not that I particularly mind although they’re going to be pretty repetitive and similar.

Couple of names you left off
You left off Morgan he’ll be starting next year and so will Page. Expect both of those guys to start next year at their resepective positions on defense. Along with Magee and Studebaker. Offensively expect us to keep Battle good speical teamer and showed good signs of being a good running back. Kolby and Salvage also at the running back position expect all guys to be back next year.
by joed2001 on Nov 14, 2009 4:46 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Magee, Studebaker, Page, and Morgan are not the answers for starters
This is assuming they don’t make some huge leap in play next year. Something you should NEVER count on happening. Those guys are all best served as backups. If they were starters they would be areas that we’d be better off with an upgrade
I don't want no Yo-Yos

Starters and reserves
If Studabaker can’t play they really don’t have a backup OLB. I wouldn’t count on Magee or Morgan but I wouldn’t count them out—if DW and Mays can play…
by FrankPitts on Nov 14, 2009 5:36 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
So we need 9 new starters...
Fantastic news :/ I would totally agree though. Personally, I think Albert is not the future for LT for us and is better served at LG with Waters at C. Either LT, NT, ILB, or S would make me happy with our first pick
I don't want no Yo-Yos

no vrabel
vrabel has already alluded to the fact that he will not play next year… so you can cross his name off the list… i also highly doubt waters will return…

…I like Edds of Iowa. He is not a sackmaster but he can cover and tackle and somebody has to have those skills. He reminds me of Futija.

…and I think he hired an agent so he and get an extension with no personality clash or tension.

personally, I’d have to take Carr off the list. I’m not remotely impressed with his development. I also think O’Callaghan has a lot left to prove, but I’m hopeful.

Chambers and Vrabel are both in contract years
Don’t see them sticking around
Predictions for 2009:
The Chiefs will regret cutting LJ
Bowe's numbers regress due to lack of decent QB play.
The D gets better in the second half but still is plagued by big plays
Cassel looks more like the guy Pioli almost cut in the '08 preseason instead of the franchise QB he hoped he would be when he traded him for
Chiefs 3-13

Coordinators
As far as coordinators go, I think it makes sense to think Romeo Crennel will be our DC. also, if Charlie Weiss is fired by the Irish, is there any doubt Scott Pioli would have Coach Haley step down? Imagine the strides at those two key spots on the staff. Not too far fetched either.
by Chief-Eli on Nov 14, 2009 6:30 PM CST via mobile reply actions 0 recs
No it's not
would Crennel work for Weiss? and Kray the Mayans ran out of rock/care on what happens after 500 years of them being gone. Do you think the Mayans saw there own demise? NOT

The way I understand it, Haley was Parcells’ first choice to be HC in Miami but turned it down. Pioli is Parcells’ son in law and obviously listens to his advice. I’d say Haley HC, Crennell DC, Weiss OC.

by BCRavenJHawkfan on Nov 14, 2009 8:47 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
I say 39 off current roster. Besides a new OC no changes to the coaches
Defense —4 new starters and 2 new backups.
Need a dominating DT. Edwards is the backup.
Dorsey and Jackson are your DEs. With Gillberry and Magee as backups.
Varbel and Hali are the OLBs but need 2 new backups.
Mays and Johnson are the ILB with Williams and Belcher as your backups.
Carr and Flowers are the CBs with Washington and Leggett as backups.
Need 2 new starting safeties with McGraw and Page as backups.
Need a new starting nickel with Morgan as the backup.
Offense: 4 new starters and 2 new backups
Need a new starting LT, Move Albert to LG, Move Waters to center, need a new starting RG and RT.
C Brown, W Smith, R Niswanger, Ndukwe, and O’Callaghan are your reserve backups for next year.
Chambers and Bowe are your starting WRs. Need a new starting slot reciever. Bradley and TBD are the backups WR.
Wade is your backup slot reciever
QBs are set w/ Cassel, Croyle, Gutierrez. RBs are Smith, Charles, and Savage with a TBD 4th and 5th back. Any of the 5 could be the starter. Ryan and Pope are the TEs with a 3rd to TBD. Any of the 3 could be the starter.

That seems workable in one off season
You don’t like Long or O’Callaghan. Washington might be the Nickle.
And any of the CB’s might look better with some D-line pressure and some Safety help over the top.

Jumping off with a bungee cord, a parachute, hang glider or doing cliff diving. Otherwise you are taking all this far too seriously and need to get a life. It’s just a game man….entertainment….not life and death.
Chiefs go 9-7. LJ makes 1400 yards. DBowe makes 1200 yards. Defense #18.
10/28--The Koolaid buzz is beginning to wear off. Maybe drop this back to my original thoughts on the year. Chiefs go 6-10 (and that my be optimistic!). LJ gets a restraining order to stay 1400 yards away from the Chiefs. I'll let the rest stand for now.

OT draft is weak this year
the chiefs would better be served to pick up free agent linemen in the offseason… in reality okung will most likely be gone by the time the chiefs pick… anyone else is just not worth the top 5 pick the chiefs will have…
