Around SBN: The End Of Sabanball: Details, Barbarians, And Precision

I think I echo the sentiments of quite a few Chiefs fans when I say "Not just no, but hell no." and "Never." Apparently never being able to beat out Priest Holmes' rushing record is something that is eating at him.

Good.

well just maybe

he will retire as a chief, if no one signs him.

Nope

I don’t see it. Not after all the crap he’s pulled and the huge number of fake apologies. And especially not after the huge negative fan reaction.

Teams generally don’t let players who were that much of a pain retire in their uniforms when they cut them under the circumstances that the Chiefs cut Johnson.

he's saying if no one else signs him from here, he would have finished as a chief

The only players I hurt with my words are the ones who have an inflated opinion of their ability. I can't worry about that.

No, He's Saying He Wants To Come Back And Get Priest's Rushing Record
“Hopefully, maybe someday, when I’m 33, 34, and I’ve still got a little bit of burn left, they’ll let me come back and get those yards."

He made that quite clear.

Oh Wait

I see what you were saying…my bad.

Meh on Johnson retiring as a Chief. He’s not going into the Hall of Fame and he’s not going into the Ring of Honor. His retiring as a Chief means as much to me as Donald Washington retiring as a Chief.

LJ is very dilusional...

if he thinks he will be around for very much longer. History says that he has at most 2 years left in the league, because obviously he isn’t Emmitt Smith. I doubt we ever see another running back start for double digit years in the NFL again. And if one does it will be in a situation where he split carries most of his career.

Someone Will

There’s always a team that will give a guy carries past the time he’s that good because of a contract or lack of other options. So you’ll see the occasional 10 year starter in the future at RB…just not that many because there never have been a lot of 10 year starters at that position. It’s a meatgrinder.

Just not a lot of teams that will give carries to a guy getting 2.7 yards per.

Tell that to Shaun Alexander.

That guy dropped off the face of the earth, and then teams acted like he had leprosy. I just think for as much as teams are paying RB’s its going to be much more common that RB’s split carries. I think Herm is to blame for LJ. There is no excuse for a Running back to ever carry the ball over 400 times in a season.

Agreed

That 416 carry season was it for Johnson. It was a ridiculous workload and Johnson was never the same afterwards.

I don’t know that you’ll see the end of primary backs forever, though…the NFL is cyclical. It just sort of depends on the offense the team runs. Hopefully teams have figured out though that there’s a limit to how much you can run a back in one season before you ruin him, and that limit is probably significantly below what Johnson got in ’06.

Everything Ive read

says the magic number is 370. But it looks like Michael Turner is going to prove that wrong this year, but then again he really have anywhere from previous years. But on the other other hand, he also isn’t putting up the numbers he did last year.

It's Not So Much A Magic Number

As a general number that came from crunching the production of backs with high usage. But yeah, 370 appears to be more or less the redline…the average production plummet of backs who hit that number is about 40%. Very few escape it. Only ones I can think of off the top of my head were Eric Dickerson and LaDainian Tomlinson (who hit that number in, I believe, his second season).

yeah...

but he can barely walk now. Its actually pretty sad seeing what he has become because of his work load. Walter Payton was the same way.

And Earl Campbell

Dude can hardly walk. It is sad to see the results of being the hero for a few years. I love the NFL and football in general but you have to question if it is worth it to the players involved. If they made really good decisions with their money and were set for life after playing a few years it might be, but far too many live like millionaires for a few years and then have no money and a broken body besides.

Chiefs go 9-7. LJ makes 1400 yards. DBowe makes 1200 yards. Defense #18.
10/28--The Koolaid buzz is beginning to wear off. Maybe drop this back to my original thoughts on the year. Chiefs go 6-10 (and that my be optimistic!). LJ gets a restraining order to stay 1400 yards away from the Chiefs. I'll let the rest stand for now.

I have to say

That article almost makes me respect Larry again, because he faces up to what he did. His explanation about the twitter fight I can buy, because I’ve gotten in chat room arguments before and it is impossible to make sentient points in that environment. You have people firing stuff at you and taking replys and twisting things around to where it sounds like you are saying the opposite of what you mean. I’ll give him that much of a break. But I’m really glad they cut him and I hope he is done here for good.
