A balanced perspective...from ME??
Okay, I'll get right to it then. I know I can be a bit gruff at times, to say the least. Especially when it comes to Haley and Pioli already this year. I know I've see-sawed in my opinion of them both. I don't have especially kind things to say about the two people I currently hold responsible for the state of my team, well, our team. Sorry.
I was born in 1968 in Kansas City Missouri in Research Hospital by a Dr. Sheehan. I know nothing about the man. I never got to meet the man who brought me into the world. That's kinda sad really to me. I was born in the Chiefs hayday. We were an elite team in those day. Ferocious and nasty. We played a bit like the 1970's Raiders. We were a bit punchy and oft times we played a little dirty on defense. Apparently the Raiders of the 70's took a lesson or two from us.
By the time I was old enough to understand football and appreciate it, the glory days were memories for older Chiefs fans...and nothing more than highlight reels to kids my age. I've never known that feeling. The one you get when you wake up in New England. Every day. Knowing your team is the Patriots. That smile that comes over your face. That butterfly effect in your tummy when you anticipate the Sunday game. Knowing that your team can take down anyone at anytime.
I was listening to NFL network last night as many of you probably were too. They got to talking about the Saints versus the Patriots matchup that's still to come this year. A game I WILL NOT miss. They were asking if anyone of the commentators felt that the Saints could go undefeated this year. The answer that was most commonly passed around was; "well, if it wasn't for that game against Belichek's Patriots, I'de say yes, but they still gotta get past the Patriots...good luck with that one". I used my own wording so don't go TVO'ing the site looking for the exact words. But you can trust me that what I quoted in my own words just now embodies everything that they all said.
That's got to be a great feeling if your a Patriots fan right? That pride and confidence. Can you imagine looking forward to playing the Saints?? Just so you could show the world that you can beat the piss out of the "unstoppable" Saints? See we don't feel like that here in KC. That's what's missing for us.
If you go back to just pre-season here on AP, you'll find some pretty interesting articles about our schedule. How unfair it was to put a slouch team like the Chiefs up against the hardest schedule in the NFL..etc ad nauseum.
Anyway, to make a long long point short. We have gone so long here without that confident "winning" attitude that we have forgotten what pride really is. That no way are we going to settle for sub par attitude.
However, in all fairness I will say that starting next year I expect to see us do some razzle dazzle in the draft and in FA and trades. Then I worry that we'll get all inflated and excited again. I bet we'll see the hope chest floating high in KC next year right before the season starts. All will be forgotten once we get thos OL we need and that center so Cassel doesn't get killed. Once we get that dynamic OC and a new DC here in KC. Oh we'll get chills thinking about what these moves could mean for us in 2010.
I say. This time, we keep it balanced as a nation. An AP Chiefs nation. Let's cool it. Because the crash is just too hard to handle. In the meanwhile, I'm okay with anyone who say's give Pioli and Haley time. Simply because we dont' have another option. Another coaching change at this point would be horrible for our team. We need some stability for sure. We need some consisitency in an area that doesn't include losses and horrible stats, cause we're pretty consistent about that.
So for now. For NOW. I will concede this season a failure and a complete and utter loss. An epic meltdown of historical proportion and will lay the blame where it belongs...somewhere. Anywhere. Whatever. There's too many things going on to poinpoint the absolute cause. Maybe they got in over their heads. Maybe they know it now. Maybe their gearing up for a HUGE shift in our team next year. I hope so. But my endless rhetoric of hate towards Haley after every loss does nothing to cheer anyone up or help find a solution.
So I'll give Haley the season to show us some IMPROVEMENT. That's all I ask. Get us out of the basement on stats. Finish strong. Give us a reason to believe in you again. If you do that coach Haley, I will back you once again. I will back you once again Mr. Pioli. Because I, like all the rest of they greatest fans in the NFL here in KC, want you both to succeed. We want a winning team here. Can you do that for us? Will you? I hope so and so do we all. We need you to do this for us. Step up do your job and we will believe again.

I'm starting to look forward to the offseasons...
It’s about the only time I can see real hope for the chiefs…. every offseason I can look and say wow we had a great draft (whether true or not), and we picked up some key guys, certainly we’ll win a few more ballgames this year…. The season’s are becoming hard to deal with…. then again. I guess karma does exist. We’re being put through this hell because of all the success we got to enjoy in the 90’s at the expense of teams like the chargers.
my uncle once told me
everything happens in a circle. And he was right. The Chiefs have enjoyed success on top or near the top of the things and now are hanging around at the bottom of the circle. I hope its the bottom side traveling upwards! :)
Winning begins with Attitude - Haley and Pioli will be winners in KC!
I'll forever be a Chiefs fan! Only God himself could take that away from me, but when I get to my great reward, I'll rejoin two bigger fans, my Mom and Dad.
lol...yup..me too callmesir..me too
I hate seeing all these mock draft posts because it’s so early, but they give me hope too. It’s really all we have to look forward to right now anyway. It’s not like we’re going to see anything great the remainder of this season at this point.
it’s not like even if we did, we could count on one hand the players that are lockdowns to be Chiefs in 2010 anyway. anyone but cassel and Jackson at this point are probably up for grabs and expendable given our record this year.
Even Bowe. Don’t fool yourself into thinking he’s a sure thing here in KC. He drops passes and Haley don’t tolerate that shit ever. So. Yah all we have right now is the hope that the mad scientist trained Pioli correctly and he has a trick or two up his sleeve for us.
Watch out Kray,
a few more level headed posts like this and people are going to accuse you of drinking the Kool Aid too. :)
This may sound strange coming from me, but I’m totally with you on not getting too exited too soon. Here’s my “Kool Aid” influenced time line for a Chief’s Super Bowl:
2009: 4-12 (laying the foundation)
2010: 7-9 (out of the basement)
2011: 10-6 (playoffs baby!)
2012: 11-5 (We make it to the AFC Champ. Game)
2013: 13-3 (Super Bowl Champs!)

I'll second that porkchop...for sure..and rec'd
I’m going to keep myself from getting too high this next offseason and just relax so I don’t get so pissed when we fail.
I think that’s realistic. It will take 3 or 4 more years to build a winning team here in KC good comment
From everything you just said above
isn’t that the essence of a true fan? :)

There are some Mondays where I don't even enjoy coming to the site for all of the negatives...
but then I just remember everybody feels that way. What can I say I’m a glass half full kind of guy.
yeah, i said it once before...
that i honestly believe they (Haley and Pioli) didnt know how bad things really were. They figured a few changes here, a little tork there, and boom. Hell, they really had to settle on scraps for assistant coaches. Either way, i dont think Haley is a loser and he wont allow this to go down next year. I just hope they dont wait, get the shit we need and lets win some games.
Good way to start my morning kray.......
It’s definitely been an emotional rollercoaster for us this year. Regardless I’ll keep my Chiefs gear on every Sunday and keep given em hell at the bar no matter what. (Damn it would be nice to have some reinforcements around here though)……..
The emotional roller coaster does have to stop.....
…but…
So for now. For NOW. I will concede this season a failure and a complete and utter loss
I don’t think I could disagree any MORE with this statement than I currently do.
We’ve chosen a GM to build a team.
We’ve chosen a coach to direct the team.
No matter how you feel about our W-L record at the moment you have to know one thing.
The team HAS to be built around the style of the head coach, and THIS team is slowly but surely getting there.
When people say “the players don’t respond to yelling and screaming”, I think:
That’s because they are the wrong players. The biggest part of building the right 53 is adding players that WILL respond to a coaches particular style. No one complained about Marty Schottenheimer screaming his head off on the sidelines during all those years of winning, and that’s what were in the process of bulding.
We’re in week 8/9 here and Pioli has not given up on trying to get teh right 53 guys on the team. We’re still adding people (Chambers) and getting rid of people (Larry “the attitude” Johnson).
Hailey gave it 1/2 the season trying out an offensive system built around a power running back that couldn’t run for a 4 yard play if his life depended on it. But last week (over the bye when there was time to do it) he made changes. The poor OL play was acknowledged and a “quick strike” pass game has been implimented.
We’ve seen a revolving door of OL, receivers, RB starters, LB’s, and Safetys. ALL in the name of getting guys on the field that will respond to the coaches leadership style. The players must fit the team. Having talent is not enough.
The biggest problem with the Chiefs comes down to attitude in the face of adversity. Vermeil coddled them, and Edwards made excuses for them. 2 “players coaches” in a row let them get fat, lazy, and disheartened. The Chiefs (for the last 3 seasons) have been a team waiting for the other shoe to drop.
No matter whats going on in the game, even if we have a lead or are stuffing the opponent; the team is always waiting for it to fall apart. They display the "ok, here we go again. how are we going to give this one away) attitude that has been built into them for the last 2 season. They are NOT mentally tough and they do not FIGHT back when adversity comes. They become disheartened and they give up. They don’t play with a fire in their belly and they just don’t seem to want it enough to put it all on the line.
Hailey is going to change that. Mark that down. I said it, and you can quote it. Hailey is a fire breathing dragon of a coach that yells and screams and FORCES players to stare down the barrel of the gun. He FORCES them to make a choise :
1) Wake up, get mad, and SHOW ME that you’re better than what I just saw.
or
2) Hang your head, give up, and give 1/2 ass effort until the game is over.
The #2’s are being benched, pushed out, or flat out fired. The team IS progressing. They are building a team that learns how to deal with adversity by jamming an adversarial coach straight down their fuckin throats one player at a time. Either you figure out how to respond positively to it, or you get your feelings hurt and give up.
We’ve had enough of the players coaches around my beloved Chiefs. It’s time to build a winning attitude and Hailey is doing it exactly as it should be done. If the players don’t respond to his style by fighting back on the field and doing everything in their power to prove him wrong in his criticism; then they are not part of the right 53.
This season is not a waste, not even close. The team is being built and WILL continue to improve. The coach hasn’t given up, the GM hasn’t given up. The plan is still in place and moving along nicely; and soon we will have built a TEAM that doens’t give up at the first sign of adversity on the field. When (not if) that happens the wins will come precisely because the team has learned how to fight back when things go wrong instead of laying down and blaming everyone else around them.

agree
I wholeheartedly agree with everything you said and I could not possibly have said it better myself. Wrecked and Kudos.
Chiefs go 9-7. LJ makes 1400 yards. DBowe makes 1200 yards. Defense #18.
10/28--The Koolaid buzz is beginning to wear off. Maybe drop this back to my original thoughts on the year. Chiefs go 6-10 (and that my be optimistic!). LJ gets a restraining order to stay 1400 yards away from the Chiefs. I'll let the rest stand for now.
I think emotions have gotten the better of many of us
The team has been playing badly – let’s face it, very badly – and a player we once cheered has embarassed us in front of the whole league. We all want to believe that the new regime is doing everything right, and there is hope for the franchise in the actions they have taken – yet some of those actions have involved ridding the team of some players many of us once believed might be the future of the franchise.
Is it any wonder that emotions are running high in Chiefs Nation?
Speaking for myself, I have made a number of specific criticisms of the new administration – almost from the first day they arrived. But it is also true that I am on board with much of what they have done. I have never said, though, that P&H shouldn’t get a reasonable chance to make their program work – and even though I am probably less than 50% in favor of Haley at this point, I think it would be a total mistake to jettison him after one season. And yes… I will believe that even if the Chiefs go 0-8 the rest of the way.
One of the things that really bothered me over the last couple of seasons is how polarized the debate over Herm Edwards became. I think it’s fair to say that Herm Edwards is not a first tier head coach – maybe not even a second or third tier head coach. And I have $10 that says someone will reply to this post with some remark about how Edwards isn’t even a fourth tier head coach! :-)
But that’s my point. With many people, it has gotten to the point that if Herm did it, it was automatically bad. Well… no NFL coach is that bad. In fact, I have another $10 that says in the years to come, we’ll still have solid, contributing players on this team that Herm Edwards brought on board.
So let’s simmer down a little bit, shall we? P&H are playing in the big leagues now, and it’s all on their shoulders. It’s fair to criticize them, but it’s counter-productive to split into two groups and throw spitballs at each other. Thanks… but I’ve had about all of that I can stand in the last couple of seasons.
Go Chiefs!
