Tracking the Interest in Former Chiefs RB Larry Johnson
I don't know about you all but for some reason I find the process of Larry Johnson picking a new team fascinating. I know it's been talked about an awful lot but I really, really want to find out how he does in his new situation.
That said, we're going to start tracking what all of these teams are saying about LJ as he sits on the open market.
Is there reported interest? Reported rumors? Preferred landing spots?
Or how about some clues, like the one we got from Adam Schefter this morning, "Larry Johnson's agent Peter Schaffer said he's 'talking with many teams and two you would never guess.' I tried to guess, he wouldn't bite."
All of this will be found here. I went through a list of all the teams and picked out the reports I've found from the various NFL reporters. Some of this is hard information, like Bill Belichick saying the Patriots have talked about him, while others are just rumors, like the Seahawks since they kicked the tired on Edge this past month.
After the jump, a listing of the teams that are reported or rumored to possibly be interested in the services of former Chiefs RB Larry Johnson.
Steelers - LJ would be interested in going there, per Schefter, but the Steelers told agent Peter Schaffer they are not interested, per LaCanfora. Head coach Mike Tomlin declined comment.
Patriots - He has been discussed, per head coach Bill Belichick. Rumored landing spot by many.
Redskins - They're not making a move on him, at least this week, per Schefter.
Bengals - No reported interest at this time but Schefter says he could think of less likely destinations. Jason Cole cites front office sources and says to keep an eye on them.
Browns - Only rumored interest, but no hard reports. Not sure why LJ would go here unless it was money.
Colts - They could/should be interested, per Schefter, but no hard reports.
Seahawks - They could/should be interested, per Schefter, but no hard reports. They signed and released Edgerrin James this season.
Broncos - Only rumored interest since they kicked the tires on seemingly every free agent RB.
Chargers - Rumored interest with LT declining.
Eagles - Rumored interest with Westbrook banged up. Jason Cole cites front office sources and says to keep an eye on them.
Giants - No reported interest but I would guess he would want to play in New York. Jason Cole cites front office sources and says to keep an eye on them.
Saints - No reported interest but have been in the market for a back previously.
Cardinals - Only rumored interest.
Texans - Not interested at this time, per GM Rick Smith.
Jets - Not interested at this time, per LaCanfora.
Bears - Not interested at this time, per LaCanfora. Schefter also says no.
Raiders - ....Is Al Davis still alive?
49ers - No, per Schefter.
Falcons - No, per Schefter.

wow...wouldnt that be something
If the broncos or chargers pick him up just in time to play the Chiefs. He would probibly tear us a new azz, and the fan boo’s would be mocked and laughed at through the whole NFL network.

No way
I don’t think LJ is going to be tearing anyone a “new azz”…no matter who he’s playing for. He’s been so easy to tackle, it’s a joke. Half the QB’s in the league are harder to bring down than LJ…let alone pretty much any other RB you can name. He’s done.

not even if he plays the chiefs?
i dont think he would be so easy to tackle for our D. Thats why he got handed the ball so much. Todd Haley just got mesmerized each week in practice by how great he looked against our defense.

I Think The Chiefs Could Stuff 2.7
He’s got no burst any more. He might have a so-so game, but that’s about the height of what he can do anymore.

On one hand I'd like to see that
I think if it was a home game it would be a true sell-out and every seat taken.

I probably didn't clarify my point.
My point is that there would be folks wanting to see him not succeed against the Chiefs and run for 2.7 ypc

Yeah sure, lots of calls
LJ’s agent is actually picking up the phone every five minutes to check there is a dial tone then putting it back down quickly in case someone calls, oops I kind of slammed it a bit there I better check it’s still working…
Blame my wife!

I don't believe his agent
That’s the guys job to find interest in LJ, but to believe that there’s all this interest in an almost 30 year old RB with a 2.7 average with that many carries is a bit much. With the youth most these teams have on the bench or practice squads would it not make more sense to use them to see what you got than to bring in someone with this kind of baggage and season performance. I’m sure he will get picked up by someone but it may not be a team of their choice or for the money they want. Right now they are just trying to stir up interest and hope that someone will bite.
is it me? or isn't about time the Lamar Hunt trophy belonged to His team?
I’m a Chiefs fan Dammit and I’m damn proud of it!

yeah but there is an interest
in a 30 year old running back that used to be great and just got a horrible offensive line. Every other team knows how horrible the Chiefs have been and they all know that its not all Larry Johnson’s fault.

very little
I would bet he will end up somewhere, but it won’t be for a contender, he will have only 1 or 2 offers to choose from, and they won’t pay him much money.

i think he will go to the patriots..
and i think he will actually be pretty good…he just didnt want to be here and and he just wasnt trying with this team, especially with the o-line we have…..it was just like preseason.LJ never wanted to be in a preseason game so he never tried at all..and then he just didnt want to be on the chiefs so he stopped trying

Going Through The List
Steelers – knew that wasn’t going to happen with Mendenhall playing well and Moore being a capable fill-in.
Patriots – I think Belichick’s blowing smoke.
Redskins – Best possibility still. Danny Boy apparently wants him and when Danny Boy wants a new toy his lackeys go out and get it for him.
Bengals – Nope…they’ve got Cedric Benson and two younger backups who’ve shown promise.
Browns – I would laugh hard if he ends up here. If he thought the Chiefs offense was bad…
Colts – Why would they be interested? They’ve got two solid RBs in Addai and Brown and they’re undefeated. Why bring in 2.7’s baggage to possibly screw with the locker room?
Seahawks – I think Edge showed them just how much washed-up RBs deliver when their ypc sink to low levels…not much.
Broncos – Again…why would there be interest? They’ve got Moreno and Buckhalter and one head case on the team already in Brandon Marshall. Why add another when they’re doing okay?
Chargers – Maybe…but LT’s still better than 2.7 even in his diminished state.
Eagles – Nope…they’ve got LeSean McCoy seizing the starting job convincingly right now and the Philly offense requires RBs who can pass-block and be active in the passing game. That isn’t 2.7.
Giants – Why would there be interest? Coughlin hates problem children and he’s already got one in Ahmad Bradshaw (who’s better and younger than 2.7).
Saints – They’ve got three RBs who are outproducing 2.7 (Bush, Thomas, Bell). Why screw up a good thing in their locker room either?
Cardinals – Nope…not with Beanie Wells and Tim Hightower performing adequately.
Texans – They don’t want him. Their o-line can’t run-block and they’ve got better options already in Brown, Moats, and Slaton (as well as possibly Chris Henry and Arian Foster).
Jets – Won’t be interested because Shonn Greene is waiting to replace Thomas Jones (who’s doing fine).
Bears – Forte, Peterson and Wolfe are all better RBs.
Raiders – Ditto Bears only with Bush, McFadden, and Fargas (two of whom have sizeable contracts).

He will be productive as long as he has a good offensive line. Has still has some legs, not much be some. But I think Larry wants to be back east.

Seahawks not interested.
Seattle coach Jim Mora said Monday that the team will not consider adding Larry Johnson, who was released by the Chiefs.
“No,” Mora said. “Julius has now had two pretty good weeks in a row.”
Yeah, let's just keep matriculatin' the ball down the field, boys! ...
