"We took all the factors into consideration — football, off-the-field issues, and we determined that it wasn't a good fit for us at this time," general manager Rick Smith said. "We've got confidence in our backs. When we come back from our open date, we expect big things out of them."
The Texans also were concerned about team chemistry. They believe they have a good thing going in the locker room right now.

“If Steve Slaton struggles to get three yards per carry behind our craptacular line, there ain’t a chance in hell that 2.7 is gonna pull it off.”

I have a feeling
The nickname “2.7” will make it’s way onto the national scene shortly….not sure how prominently, but one major paper will have the “2.7” nickname tomorrow :)

REALLY?
Football – 2.7 ypc = Negative
Off the field issues = Negative
LJ = Bad for the team!
You know what, those Texans are geniuses.

I Won't Go That Far
But damn, their offense is fun to watch, isn’t it?

Shanahan's Kid Looks Like He Might Have Inherited His Dad's Talent For Coaching An Offense
I wonder…if Kubiak gets fired in Houston, is it possible that both Texas teams might be led by Shanahans next season?

It's interesting the shouting match Schefter and LaCanfora are getting in
regarding this. It seems with this quote you can strike a win for Schefter. This quote blows a big hole in LaCanfora’s report from NFL.com

Supposedly
Both the Steelers and Bears have said “no thanks” as well.

I will laugh if he goes to the skins...
it may be a slightly better fit for Johnson but it will still be hilarious in my mind.

He's Working For The Ravens Now As An Offensive Consultant
So he’s not available until the season’s over…but I’d love to see him come back.
Not that I think there’s a chance Haley would want him here.

Yeah, that is a pretty good duo,
Cam Cameron, Al Saunders, couple of good offensive minds there.
Good move by the Chiefs org, glad to see LJ gone.

Saunders
Runs an Air Coryell offense. Haley runs an Erhardt-Perkins.
Yes, great offensive coordinator though.

Not Really
There was a column written by either Posnanski or Whitlock that kind of talked about Saunders about the time Herm got hired (I think it was Whitlock) that told a story from the locker room. It was about a story that Vermeil told that had all the players kind of spellbound, which was followed by a follow-on story that Saunders told that apparently had all the players going “Yeah, whatever”.
The gist of the story was that while Saunders is a good OC with an excellent mind for offense, he just never demonstrated an ability to win players over. He was also seen as kind of a phony. Now, that may be true or it may not, but the fact remains that he’s been at several stops since his time in KC and he’s never been seriously considered for any of the head coaching gigs once the guy over him got fired (or by other teams)…even though he had prior experience as a head coach. So I suspect that quite a few GMs felt the same way abput the guy. Good coordinator…not really head coaching material. And based on a couple of articles I’ve seen about Saunders since he left KC, it would appear that Saunders appears to have accepted that he’s not going to get another HC gig.

Don't Know If That's A Fair Assessment Or Not
But a head coach needs at least some level of charisma to do the job and that’s never come off as Saunders’ strong suit. From what I’ve seen he’s a solid tactician and from what I heard players respect his knowledge, but nobody seemed particularly interested in having him as a head coach. Kind of damned with faint praise.
But I’d love to have him back in KC running the offense again.

Waitasecond.
The Texans also were concerned about team chemistry. They believe they have a good thing going in the locker room right now.
That locker room has Bernard Pollard in it and Kent Babb has decreed that Pollard is a bad thing to have in locker rooms, thus his statement that they have ‘a good thing going’ in any locker room that contains Bernard Pollard is unpossible.
