Matt Cassel Sucks?
For those of you who are already calling for Cassel's head: ease the noise. Matt Cassel is playing behind the 28th ranked pass blocking Offensive line, which is going to be a major adjustment for him to make given where he came from, and his playing style. There are two criticisms of Matt that I think are so far fair. 1) he reacts to pressure when it isn't there 2) his pocket awareness is off.
1) hes getting knocked around more than he had been used to, but mroe so, his time to make a play has been slashed. He is going to take a while to calm down from his current state of constant alarm.
2) Once he does the above, he wil settle and be more able to hang in the pocket when he does have time.
A criticism I do not feel is just is that he is a bad decision maker. Trent Dilfer dinged him on having difficulty making it through his progressions. I see why he is saying this, but I don't think that is what it is. Tom Brady and Peyton Manning progress throught options at light speed. Cassel is much more recursory and methodical. If his decisions were bad, he wouldnt have one of the best completion % in the league(08) and best TD-INT ratio. He is just very analytical about progression reads. Ben Roethlisberger is the same way. Even with a good line, Ben takes a lot of sacks. Cassel is the same way and thus got sacked a lot even with NE's line. It's just how he plays, and the offense should be adjusted to fit this. While like Ben, Matt Cassel takes longer to finish reads, and is very mobile, but he lacks the sort of arm strength ben has. Cassel is not a guy who is going to consistantly beat you deep. He is more of a mid range passer who hits guys in front of the defender. Since he has a poor line, Haley shold be drawing up plays that use a lot of hot routes, slants, crosses, and comebacks. Hot routes cut down the need for long reads and let him get the ball out of there fast. assuming it is executed well, he will be making a lot of 6-12 yd completions that keep us away from 3rd and long and the offense will speed up. Cassel can make those throws all day as he has shown. Even when guys are covered he can slip the ball right into the spot it needs to be. Cassel is very accurate passer with the ability to beat you underneath every time. So far both of his INTs were more so fantastic plays by the defender than out of place passes.
Cassel is:
Lethally accurate
Very smart
A good, detailed reader
mobile enough to get away or save/extend plays
He just needs to calm down and play to his strengths. Haley has also got to trust him enough to let him beat his opponent instead of calling draw plays on 3rd and 15. The thing that I fell makes calling for Cassle's head the silliest is that he has been thus hardly had anything asked of him other than make it to the end alive.
Let him loose Todd.

it's funny becuse
I was saying the same things after the Raider/Eagles game. LET MATT THROW. you can’t score huge bomb passes if you aren’t allowed to take those shots. Same with LJ, he can’t run well with draw plays. He is a down hill runner, not a sideline to sideline guy. Put Charles/Savage in those shotgun plays. It doesn’t make sense. Let Cassel throw, and let LJ run downhill.

yes let matt cassel take over
i dont even want him to throw down field just small 8 yard slants small passes those kill defense and they are easy to complete.
FOUR F'S FIND UM FEEL UM FUGUM FORGET UM.
all those short hot slant cross fade routes and 6-12 yrd gains sound AWESOME
so why haven’t we seen any of them? are you saying it’s bad playcalling?
you also said “Even when guys are covered he can slip the ball right into the spot it needs to be” but I haven’t seen a whole lot of that thus far …

yes bad play calling
or at least overly restrained
hes hit some very imperssive spots though. i specifically remember him hitting sean ryan once down the middle and placed the ball in an impossible spot. I was floored
Did seem like I heard Cassel throws it to the proper spot
away from the defender

Definitely Agree
on removing the leash. Haley needs to trust in the QB he has praised since coming to us from the Pats. Hey Todd, remove your teat from Cassel’s mouth and let the boy grow up. Sure, he might make some mistakes, but it is those mistakes that will mold him into a perennial passer.
Put this in your pipe and smoke it:
1. Chiefs will be at least 8-8 and vie for division champs
2. DJ will break out and finally have his year
3. LJ returns to form
4. DBowe drops will reduce
Im impresed with cassel
He might not be slinging for 300 every week but when your starting back is avg 2.6 yards a carry we cant ask him too….. the only reason i think everyone is mad at the matt cassel is bcuz his two int game in a winnable game. As the new regime puts weapons and a line around him i think he will be the QB we all thought when we traded for him. Just think if we didnt pursue him and mcdaniels got him and he was 4-0 then everyone would have been even more pissed at the situation and saying why didnt we get cassel
And its alot easier too say that we shouldnt have went out and got him now that we see brokie might be a decent player
well, that's part of my complaint regarding Pioli ...
spending so much on QB while leaving him with an OL that’s in disarray – for the money in Cassel, imagine what kind of OL we MIGHT have been able to get – and with a kickass OL, Croyle might be decent or, who knows, even better – AND – a running game to go with it
just a thought, you know …
Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisiton!
Well we still have the money to spend 23 Million I think
and at least 2 million under the floor that HAS to be spent. I thought earlier it might be DJ’s money not so much anymore.

yeh
i like the cassel move just bcuz we didnt have to give up much, yeh a 2nd round pick but thats really not that much when you think of the quality of player we would have recieved…I know it wouldnt have been equivalent to vrabel and cassel
The contract can go eiether way it dosent affect us as fans, for the simple fact we have so much money we need to spend now as it is
I am mad at the fact the pioli and haley thought they could do nothing during free agency and still be a good team…. the money was and is still there for pioli to have improved teh line. Now you have a valid point if we would have gave cassel the contract instead of being active in free agency but pioi could and should have done both
and the cassel deal
we pay him 60 million over 10 year and im sure hes not making 10 million this year cuz im sure its heavily weighted int eh later years of the contract, but for sake of the argument lets say hes making 10 mil a year, that wouldnt get us too far in this year free agency when center jason brown makes 7 million a year…. we should have really just done both, but what do we know
If Cassel takes a sack instead of throwing an INT
I would do a happy dance. I’d rather 2nd and 19 than the other team having the ball. That’s just how he is. You should ALWAYS prefer the sack over a horrible pass for an INT. Unless it’s 4th down and you have no choice.
Penn State to Kansas City...Always a winning combination.
Horrible pass!?
Granted one was not a good throw and the other was pretty decent, just well defended
It is a new Era at Arrowhead. I do not yet know if it is one of greatness or one of ineptitude. I am excited to see which way it goes, and will support my team until the end, bitter or sweet!
Not talking about the Raiders game
I’m talking about it in general. I much prefer a QB to take a sack or throw the ball away over making a rushed pass into traffic to get rid of the ball.
Penn State to Kansas City...Always a winning combination.
So what then?
I think Cassel has had a good mix of taking sacks when he should, moving and extending the play, and taking his shots. I haven’t seen that many really bad throws.
Croyle would just be throwing 200 mph bullets at anyone wearing a helmet!

just wanted to say nice post
and rec’d
...( . )( . )...(___/{i}\___) ...(____X____)......oh and football....
Thus far Croyle has given the Chiefs the best chance to win a game.
Cassel has looked good at times.

Croyle played ONE game
And it’s obvious in that game that they didn’t bother defending the pass because they were guarding against the run.
I’m sorry…but one game does not erase years of CRAP.
Penn State to Kansas City...Always a winning combination.
No way
The fact that we were in the Ravens game until the end is more of a testiment to the defense than Croyle. Cassel put us in a position to win the Raiders game and he moved the ball against the Giants. Cassel is the best option for this team.
I DO NOT AGREE
cassel had the game winner to bowe for SIX, but our D got GASHED to lose it…he gave em a chance in oakland, and brodie was helped by a blocked punt for a TD, AND a return to inside the 20 yard line by DJ…thats two easy touchdowns that brodie did not contribute to
cassel is 4/0 TD/INT in the last 2 games where we got killed, he took sacks instead of making bad throws, he was hit constantly even when he wasnt just taking a sack, he has done a great job of not turning it over despite the o-line, drops, and lack of a run game.
croyle is what..0-9 as a starter? how does that give us the best chance to win….if cassel starts 0-9 then maybe there is a discussion…even then…Cassel ends up being the franchise QB next year when he breaks out with new options/OL/TE’s etc.

check the line
recievers…check the bad knee that hurt timing and momentum
and finally, check yourself
Cassel is ranked at the bottom of then NFL for a reason
First off…Ben Roethlisberger does NOT have a good line to play in front of. Neither does Aaron Rodgers. Try getting sacked 8 times in one game. EIGHT TIMES!!! And still get almost 400 yards passing and 2 tds.
Aaron Rodgers doesn’t need his fans to make excuses for his play because of his shitty horrible offensive line. He does great despite it. Which is what superstars do. They overcome. PERIOD!!
Ben is HUGE and mobile so it’s hard to bring him down….but he scrambles more than anyone because as EVERY commentator will tell you…his offensive line is subpar at best. They are not a good unit…They have a horrific rushing game because of it. They are sitting in the basement in the dark with us on rushing rankings this year because they can’t create a hole for Sammy to run through. They suck. But Ben overcomes that.
That’s greatness. We have mediocricy here in KC.
Could the play calling be better? Absolutely it could. Could our line be a little better?? YEP!! Do the same problems keep Ben and Aaron Rodgers ranked in the 20’s for QB’s in the NFL?? NO WAY!!
If it takes an AWESOME line to make him look good then he’s not good. Anyone can be good if they have all day to throw. What makes you great is avoiding the traffice and SMARTLY buying yourself time to throw..like Brett Favre has done on many occasions even this year. He should have been sacked over and over again, but he finagled his way free and got the ball to an OPEN receiver.
What about Eli last year in the Superbowl?? He was buried by defenders…I thought he disappeared into a black hole at one point…the line had literally swallowed him alive,,but he broke free and the rest is history. That’s greatness. That’s what it takes to be great. Is not making excuses but just doing your fucking job regardless.
What makes Adrian Peterson so different..he breaks tackles and he makes things happen that other backs don’t do. He’s different. Despite the same adversities other teams running backs face, he EXCELS DESPITE those adversities. that’s how you define greatness.
Will Cassel develop into a great QB?? Who knows? I sure hope so. I need him to. We all do. But sugar coating manure…is still manure with sugar on it. This is a results driven league. In the end you can find excuses for every mediocre player and play caller and team etc. But, greatness finds a way to excel in the most grueling outmatched conditions. David didn’t beat Goliath by making excuses…neither will we.
It’s time to man up and shut up and put up. The rest is senseless chatter. The fact remains our QB is ranked in the gutter for a reason. More importantly our team is ranked in the gutter for a reason …we suck. that’s why.
It’s time to look ahead with no excuses and with optimism that we will find a way despite the overwhelming odds to overcome and defeat. That’s when we will be great…not until. And any excuse making is still going to be just that until then..EXCUSES! We’re 0-4 for a reason.
Current QB ranking for Cassel is #19
Based on completion % as well as yards, TD/Ints, and passer rating.
Not great but, not too bad either, all things considered.

I agree with you krayfish! We do suck period. I think we have some good players, but we don’t have a team. I think that Cassel will step up, and I think he will be good. But there are alot of excuses. But who knows how things would be if our line was better. And we need more WR threats. And i think that we would see a difference if we had a real pass rusher on our defense.
and to your point kcrules...
it’s not Matt that is to fault for our 0-4 record…it’s a team effort to be this pathetic…it’s not one person..but to continously search for something to justify hailing Cassel as some amazing QB is just preposterous…you don’t have to look for greatness….it shines through on it’s own…if your LOOKING for something positive about anyone on our team…then there isn’t any thing positive…you shouldn’t have to dig for it…good commment kcrules…I love our Chiefs…and I will never stop believeing EVER….but believing doesn’t win games anymore than excuse making does….GO CHIEFS!!
I haven't read anyother comments...
but he was actually one of the more sacked QB’s in NE too. He could very well just be a jittery QB like Rob Johnson was. He also just over a years worth of starting since high school, I think its expected that he is going to have a little happy feet back there.
I read somewhere that a RB’s production is more due to good O-Line play, and that a QB’s sacks are on him more than the O-Line. Of course that isn’t always the case but if you look at Peyton he never holds the ball, its on in 3 seconds. Dan Marino never got sacked despite being pretty much a statue, that guy never took more than a step or 2 in any direction.
So basically pocket presence is something you develop, and when Cassel has a better feel for his receivers the ball should come out earlier.
Desperately hoping for Desperate Measures
+1
Hall of famer Dan Fouts also comes to mind of someone who never left the pocket, but he had Joiner and Winslow :-)
Cassel has been
given superstar status and there’s nothing we can do about it because Pioli made a big mistake and we have to live with it for a long time.
Haley should have said there’s competition at every position except QB. We have to play Cassel because he’s making 63 mil and you can’t have him sitting on the bench (where I think he belongs). The only way Cassel doesn’t play is if he gets hurt.
So quit trying to defend him because it doesn’t need it. HE WILL NOT GET BENCHED. We can be 0 and 16 and it won’t matter. We have to wait for him to get better no matter how long it takes. 63 mil is superstar pay.
plus one choir boy...although I don't think he sucks...
he just isn’t qualified yet to say he’s worth the 63 million dollars we gave him…he isn’t proven..
it's fine if you think Cassell isn't proven enough to deserve his contract
but completely ridiculous if you also think that Sanchez and Stafford do deserve theirs. They are even less proven.
Air Cassel - approved for takeoff
I'm sure with our tract record..
we’ll bring in Favre in 2 years after he’s done with the Vikings and too old to play so we can lose in the first round of the playoffs again…..j/k
Heart bubbles
Everyone on this board has so much love for Matt Cassel.
If the guy was worth his salt and ridiculous contract, he would make things happen, like other good QB’s do.
Croyle had the same evolving line against a tough defense and made plays.

Made Plays!!!!!?
Which plays are you referring to.
Oh yeah, the plays where he faked an injury for a time out! Oh thats right he wasn’t faking he was injured for the year!
It is a new Era at Arrowhead. I do not yet know if it is one of greatness or one of ineptitude. I am excited to see which way it goes, and will support my team until the end, bitter or sweet!
Always look
At one or two misteps.
Cassel has really proved that much to you?
Brodie Croyle still gives the Chiefs the best chance to win.
PERIOD.

I would write that down!
And look at it again at the end of the year. If Brodie starts he won’t finish.
Cassel hasn’t proved much to me except that he is tough, extends plays, and wants to win.
