How to Build a First-Rate Offensive Line
With the amount of chatter concerning the offensive line and what to do with it in the future (and present), it begs a simple question to be asked amidst the chaos:
What does it really take to build a championship-level offensive line?
Going with the rankings of the top offensive lines heading into the 2009 season by the National Football Post, here's a look at how some of today's best offensive units have built their front five.
New York Giants
The Giants found their anchor and left tackle, David Diehl, in the fifth round of the 2003 draft. He started at right guard immediately that season and eventually moved to right and then left tackle in the following seasons. He's perhaps the most reliable offensive lineman in the NFL right now (80 straight starts) and can play multiple positions. Left guard Rich Seubert has started ever since he was an undrafted free agent in 2001. Center Shaun O'Hara came as a free agent from the Cleveland Browns in 2004 and became a Pro Bowler for the first time last season.
Right guard Chris Snee was drafted in the second round of the 2004 draft and started immediately, only missing the last few games of his rookie season due to injury. He also became a first-time Pro Bowler (and All-Pro) last season. Right tackle Kareem McKenzie joined the team as a free agent from the New York Jets before the 2005 season.
Much more after the jump:
Philadelphia EaglesEven though the team finds themselves dealing with injuries early on this season with the Andrews brothers (Stacy and Shawn), the Eagles still have a solid offensive line. The much-heralded acquisition of this last offseason brought left tackle Jason Peters over from the Buffalo Bills. Current left guard Nick Cole was signed as an undrafted free agent in the 2006 season, although Shawn Andrews would be starting here, who was the first round pick in 2004.
Center Jamaal Jackson was signed as an undrafted free agent in 2003 and has started 58 games ever since. Right guard Max Jean-Gilles was drafted in the fourth round of the 2006 draft. Winston Justice, the current starting right tackle, was the second round pick in the same year - 2006.
Tennessee Titans
Seems weird to look closely at the offensive line of a team with the same record as the Chiefs, but the Titans offensive line fits the team name perfectly and the unit is outstanding. Left tackle Michael Roos is arguably the best young left tackle in the game and was a second round pick in 2005. Left guard Eugene Amano was a seventh(!) round choice in 2004.
Center Kevin Mawae is a 7-time Pro Bowl center who signed with the Titans in 2006 after being cut by the Jets and he still went to the Pro Bowl just last year, showing his excellence even late in his career. Right guard Jake Scott signed in 2008 after winning the Super Bowl with the Colts the year before. And right tackle David Stewart was a fourth round choice in the 2005 draft and has started 45 straight games at the position.
What does this teach us about building an offensive line? This tells us quite a bit:
1. Every team we've looked at built their line over a prolonged period of time. Some of these guys started at different positions than they are now. Others took a few seasons to develop their talent. Others only found their chance to start when another teammate was injured. But each team has added pieces every season. The Titans line goes back to 2004. The Eagles stretch back to 2003. The Giants go all the way back to 2001.
Thus the idea of developing a championship o-line overnight is simply an impossibility. It takes time to develop the chemistry and to build your depth, so expecting the Chiefs to find their answers via a series of endless waiver claims and preseason trades is just not the way the NFL works. Sure, it'd be great if Andy Alleman, Ike Ndukwe and Ryan O'Callaghan all work out long term. But chances are, that's not what we'll see a few years from now.
2. Every team we've looked at has kept the offensive line a priority year in and year out. With each of these teams, you'd be hard pressed to find a single season where they didn't add key pieces to their o-line. A key element, it seems then, is to make sure you're constantly drafting for the future and scouring the free agent wire to find the right piece.
3. Every team we've looked at utilized every possible outlet to add to their offensive line. Older free agents cut by their longtime teams. Undrafted free agents. Draft picks at every level. High and low-profile trades. Any and all means are used by each team at the top to find the guys they're looking for.
What this means is that we're doing things the right way, at least in this category. The GM should have an insatiable appetite to find the right talent no matter where he has to look and Pioli's done just that in the early going. Sure, some of us would have liked an offensive lineman pick much earlier in the draft, but Colin Brown holds potential. The early trade with the Dolphins and waiver wire pick-up of O'Callaghan shows a willingness to follow this principle.
It will take some time and patience from both the front office and coaches to get our offensive unit to where it needs to be. Every team is looking for the same level of quality and there's simply not enough dominant talent to go around. But with a shrewd GM armed with a long-term plan willing to look under every rock, the Chiefs just might build back that mammoth line once again.

I'd love to hit on a young undrafted free agent Olineman
As George Costanza said, “That’s like discovering plutonium, by accident!”
Excellent read rec
Maybe the O-line will be in place when the D-line gets ready, Next year:)
We Will kick at least 4 Teams Asses in 09
And Succop will be the Key in two of them.

"Every day is an evaluation and if you’re not out there how can we depend on you? If you’re out there and you don’t know what to do, how can we depend on you?" Accountability -- Haley-style...
well done!
It just goes to show that you don’t need an OL full of 1st round picks, you just have to keep adding to it year in and year out, and find the RIGHT combination.
I think that the Chiefs fans expected 1 or 2 big name linemen to come in and instantly make this a dominant line… but Matt’s research shows that it doesn’t always work that way.
5th, 6th, 7th rd picks and UDFA often end up being great O-Linemen. Patience is the key, and not sitting idle…
The Chiefs are certainly not sitting idle, and are starting to build a line.
* "I doubt anyone will miss Connor Barth except UCrawford"
* the LB corps may become the biggest strength of the Chiefs in 2009
* The OL is NOT as bad as you think it is... give it time, and you'll see improvement this season
The key to having so many late round picks pan out
is having a solid foundation in place so they don’t have to be baptized by fire when they enter the NFL. Barely any of those 5th 6th and 7th round picks play their first year, they’re given time to develop. It’s easy to find NFL level talent it’s hard to develop it into NFL level players

Excellent post
there’s just such an urgency here to build a solid O line because our first string quarterback has a huge contract and can’t stand tall against the storms forever, and our backup is a good candidate for the IR if he ever has to play more than 5 games.. We need to make bigger splashes for O line men in free agency next off season if we don’t solidify at least two more starters this year (next to the two that we already have solidified; Albert/Waters)… A draft spent entirely on one unit especially with a unit as malinged as the Chiefs is a wasted one.
On the uphand, I think Colin Brown will be a starter one day.. He has an excellent pass blocking technique and enough size to be a good run blocker. RT seems pretty ideal but he’s spent time at RG which is intriguing.. I never took him for someone fast enough to play guard.
Niswanger may be who your talking about when you mention that guys get moved around.. The guy simply is not a C but he may work out at one of the guard positions.. A center with one of our seconds would make me happy
Time is a great teacher... unfortunately it kills all it's pupils.
I dont think we have a true Center
No one on our team is a Center. They maybe have played Center….but not a true blue guy. We should have grabbed Eric Wood in the draft….or even the other few guys that were available…..we could have did some trading to get them. A Center is a big part of the Oline.

I totally agree
I so wanted Jason Brown off the Free agent market. He’d push Rudy out to RG and with O’Callaghan I think we could have has a solid line this year.. But one can only dream

Yeah we missed out in FA
But Pioli and Haley didnt know they would kinda be in a mess at certain positions already…so we cant blame them for just dropping the ball.

agreed
it took awhile to get scouts in place, his own that is, he had to draft using old info from previous regime members…I think its unfair to judge them yet because they had no idea what we had…if they cleaned house without looking to see what is there would be the same type of mistake that let joe horn walk, and lilja.
You had a rec
until you lost me at Niswanger to Guard. Imo IF he has a chance in this league it’s GOT to be on the outside.
you think so?
at RT? I guess it makes sense but Niswanger has never played on the outside right? I thought throuhgout college and Pro’s he’s only been an interior lineman
Time is a great teacher... unfortunately it kills all it's pupils.
I don't think he has either
but I think he’s at a physical disadvantage due to his height. If he has the feet he could be a Right Tackle.
yah know...
My two main picks for last year were
1. Curry
2. Alex mack (through trade up)
interesting…interesting

I do believe the chiefs need to draft O Line in first round tho
And another O-line man with one of our 2nd round pics.
I believe this is the only thing holding us back from atleast competing on a weekly basis..Of course we need an additional threat at WR
First round really?
I bet your one of those that believe Albert isn’t the long term answer at LT then. With how our seasons been going we’ll be in the top 10 picking this year
Time is a great teacher... unfortunately it kills all it's pupils.
I don't know...
I think it would be better to use our second round picks on O-line. We are looking at a top 10 pick, maybe even top 5. Unless Albert doesn’t pan out, I can’t see any position on the O-line being worth a top 5/10 pick.

How to build a first-rate O-line?
Trade for Willie Roaf
I'd rather die on my feet than be living on my knees

Sweet
I could do that myself……
Will Shields is coming back….although he probably looks like Andre Smith without a shirt on

that was gross

I think he did....actually
He is on the injured reserve now with a titty smack to the left eye socket muscle.

Really
He just turned 38 and owns a gym in Overland Park Kansas……he is probably in great shape….he could probably make a come back if he ever wanted to…..

He has a intern
Coaching gig with the Jets, I wouldn’t mind seeing him come to the Chiefs as a Coach.
Oh that would be freaking sweet!
I would be 100% for that move.

Vermeil put the #1 priority on OL...
… and Herm completely ignored it until the remnants of his inherited line completely fell apart.
Teams have proven time and time again that you can have an effective offense with mediocre players at every position EXCEPT offensive line. I can name tons of teams that have succeeded with so-so QBs, nobody RBs, and/or no-name WRs… but can you think of one high-caliber offense without a good OL?
How is it possible that there are still coaches and GMs out there that don’t get this?

It needs to be a mix
Dick was 100% dedicated to the offense and our defense suffered….Herm was 100% dedicated to our defense and our offense (and defense) suffered……Hopefully Haley and Pioli can give it a good mix 50/50 and keep both sides competitive without ingnoring any position of value.
"Its going to be a challenge, its going to feel like forever, and there will be difficulties. But we will emerge on the other side of it stronger than we were when we entered." ~ Sudden
absolutely
You can’t ignore either side of the ball. I would argue that Vermeil didn’t ignore the defense as much as fail at it (actually he just passed most of the responsibility to the DC). They used a good amount of picks and FA money on D… it just didn’t work out.

Like Surtain, Kendrell Bell
Drafted Kawika Mitchell. Good guys on paper…but not on the field.

u gotta start with the o- line
I think Bill Parcels set a good example in 08…first pick in draft…..O Lineman
I remember the year Diehl came in the league...
All the “experts” were talking about how crappy their oline was and how they would continue to suck. They actually turned it around that year. Unfortunately with the way that the business end of the game is set up this is the only way to build a line. Its very rare that a great player is available in FA now with RFA and franchise tags limiting the players available.
"Success is never ending, failure is never final."
If we spent a fraction of the draft picks
on the O-Line that we’ve spent on the D-Line, we wouldn’t have this problem. We’re where we’re at because the O- line has been largely ignored in the draft for the past 3 years (sans Albert). You want a solid O-Line? Don’t rely on picking up your linemen in Rounds 5-7. Shit is pretty elemenatry to me.

look at that article again
a LOT of starting OL have come from rounds 5-7

* the LB corps may become the biggest strength of the Chiefs in 2009
* The OL is NOT as bad as you think it is... give it time, and you'll see improvement this season
"Colin Brown holds potential"
What offensive lineman have we drafted in this last decade where we HAVEN’T said this? EVERYBODY in the NFL has potential. Otherwise they wouldn’t be in the league

O-Line
Matt – Good work on building a dominate o-line. How about taking a real close look at what the Chiefs have done since 2000 in just the drafting of o-lineman. Of twelve drafted o-linemen, one is currently on an active roster today. As I have it, ONE. That isn’t one still with the Chiefs, that is one playing with any NFL team. How about some reflection on scouting department and the coaching staff. Are the Chiefs that bad at evaluating talent, finding talent, coaching lineman once they arrive, or is this the typical result for most NFL teams?
