Here's my bold prediction: We don't lose more than 3 games during this next quarter of the season.

Nice numbers. So why were Colquitt and Todd Haley snapping at each other on the sidelines after one of his punts late in the third quarter? When Colquitt came off the field, Haley said something to him, and the punter made a bee-line to his head coach to give his two cents worth on the situation. This went back and forth for a few seconds before Haley moved on and one of the folks on the Chiefs sideline walked Colquitt in the other direction.

"I thought that was a private conversation," Haley said when asked what was going on. "I guess I was probably too loud."

He was definitely loud enough for Colquitt to hear.

"I’d like to think I’ve learned a ton after four games and, hopefully, that I’m able to use it better for this team," Haley said. "I’m not going to make excuses. We’ve just got to find solutions, find ways to get better and, hopefully, those experiences that we’ve been through to this point, my first four games as a head coach, that I’m able to get better."

Haley sees Chiefs’ brutal schedule as a learning experience from KC Star

Star-divide

I'm taking this thing a little further. I think the Jared Allen deal has firmly placed the Chiefs in the funk they're in today. It forced the Chiefs to start over on defense, abandon anything that might have been working and experiment. Last year, it forced Herm Edwards to play all those rookies to help validate a youth movement that the Allen trade brought about. Without Allen or a dominant defender like him, Edwards' replacement, Todd Haley, scrapped the entire defensive scheme and moved toward the 3-4. Because why not? There was no elite defensive end that the move would displace and no one to build around if the Chiefs had remained in the 4-3.

Revisionist history: Did the Jared Allen trade doom the Chiefs? from The Red Zone

But one area Pioli could not adequately address was wide receiver. Holdovers Dwayne Bowe and Mark Bradleyand veteran newcomers Bobby Engram and Bobby Wade share one common trait – a lack of game-breaking speed. They aren't going to run past anyone.

That allows defenses to single cover the two receivers on the flank and invest as many as nine players in run Defense and harassment of the quarterback.

Dallas Cowboys Scouting Report: Kansas City Chiefs from The Dallas Morning News

It’s been mostly downhill for the Kansas City Chiefs since a 38-31 home loss to the Indianapolis Colts in the divisional round of the 2003 playoffs. They have one playoff berth since, and in three seasons in that stretch, they had losing records.

Since the start of the 2007 season, Kansas City is the worst team in the NFL. Worse even than the Detroit Lions.

The Chiefs have only six victories in their past 36 games. They have had two general managers, two coaches and four starting quarterbacks in that span.

Kansas City seems certain to have a third consecutive losing record, which would be the first time that has happened since the Chiefs had losing records in each season from 1974-79.

Chiefs would like to be Dallas Texans of old against Dallas Cowboys from The Star-Telegram

The Kansas City Chiefs will recognize San Antonian Priest Holmes as part of “Alumni Weekend” during a pregame ceremony for the Cowboys-Chiefs game Sunday at Arrowhead Stadium.

Priest Holmes to be Recognized from MySanAntonio.com

Strengths: Waters, who has been voted to the Pro Bowl in four of the past five seasons, is form perfect. He is strong and compact, with a natural low center of gravity. He plays with a low pad level. The Waxahachie native moves well, having been a tight end (86 receptions, 975 yards and 9 touchdowns) and a defensive end (45 tackles, 5 sacks) in four seasons at North Texas. He will catch the defender and try and use his upper body strength to muscle him. Waters rarely ends up on the ground...

...Notable: Waters was cut by the Cowboys as a rookie free agent in 1999. The Chiefs moved him from tight end to the offensive line after signing him in 2000. Kansas City originally had plans to turn Waters into a center, but that was before it signed Casey Wiegmann in 2001.

Spotlight on Chiefs left guard Brian Waters from The Star-Telegram

I promised readers back in April, when I wrote about the Chiefs pick of Tyson Jackson in my article "The Chiefs Made a Big Mistake..." I would keep everyone up to date on the status of both Aaron Curry and Tyson Jackson. So very quickly a quarter into the season, here's how the two picks break down...

...So if I were to score this first "round" meaning first four games of the season, what's my card look like? Obviously it's unanimous in favor of Curry. He's an explosive athlete and the Seahawks are just scratching the surface of what he could do. Can you imagine what he's look like as a rush OLB for the Chiefs? Instead you get Mike Vrabel. Sorry Chiefs fans, but at the 1/4 mark, the Jackson pick just isn't measuring up. Jackson is getting swallowed up by NFL offensive tackles and hasn't shown any improvement. This team high first round picks at both end spots, and so expectations are high. So far, Jackson is not delivering. I'll be back to update again, once both teams have 8 games under their belt and we'll see if Jackson is able to gain any ground on Curry.

Gretz's article

Best line – “The AFC West is the league’s most competitive punting division.”

WOW, that’s really something to be proud of!!!!

I've never heard of a coach getting into it with his punter before.

Maybe it was on that play where one of the Chiefs gunners was totally uncovered.

Haley: “Damn it Colquitt! If you had been paying attention you could have passed to the gunner and we could have converted that 4th and 15!”

Colquitt: “Uh, have you seen me try to throw the ball? I think I have some footage of that from the botched snap of a game last year…”

He Seems To Have Problems Getting Along With Anyone

Was Colquitt at his best? No…but considering that the punts worked out okay for the Chiefs at this point maybe Haley’s got more important things to do than bitch at the punter’s good fortune.

The fact that Colquitt (a punter…one of the more replaceable positions on the team) came back and woofed right at back him indicates that Haley’s “fear by screaming” style of “leadership” is starting to lose its mystique.

Predictions for 2009

1. Todd Haley's going to struggle with managing his staff in his rookie year as head coach.
6. The Chiefs will go 7-9 in 2009, good for 2nd in the AFC West. Revision: We go 5-11 and finish behind Oakland.
7. Ryan Succop will not perform better in 2009 than Connor Barth did in 2008.
8. The Chiefs will have a bottom 10 defense this year.
9. RB will be a problem area this season on offense.

Was it screaming?

I didn’t see it on TV if they were yelling at each other but were they?

If they weren’t would it then be classified as “fear by cordial heated conversation” style of leadership?

I’m just wondering because Gretz’s article is vague at best in providing details.

i don't think he's trying to instill fear

everyone knows a more effective manner of instilling fear is to just glare at players and never give any feedback so you never know where you stand. bill parcells said it best when he said, “confrontation is a good thing. it clears the air immediately.”

yes

but i doubt we’d win more games because of it. i’m guessing you are not a parcells fan either…what coach would you prefer we have gotten? i’m curious because i’m really tired of you feeling the need to make snide comments about everything this guy does. i don’t care that you don’t like him but do you have to say it in response to every single comment made by others on here. lets star’t hearing solutions from you instead of incessant bitching about a guys style.

I'll start by saying thank god we DON'T have Mangini ...

as for who(m) else I might have brought in … tough question to answer … what are my choices? Crennel maybe … NOT Martz for sure! Cowher in a heartbeat if he’d wanted to come back to coaching … Al Saunders, perhaps

Actually I'm A Big Parcells Fan

I just don’t think that Haley’s anywhere near as good as Parcells. I could scream at players and abuse them and tell them to run laps. Doesn’t make me Parcells.

lets star’t hearing solutions from you instead of incessant bitching about a guys style

Solutions? I’m not the coach or the GM. I don’t have any control over what the team does. And I made my proposals for where the team could improve all offseason. So whether I propose solutions or bitch the end result is the same…they’re going to do what they’re going to do. I just refuse to pretend that they’re doing a good job.

Don’t like it? Then don’t read my comments or respond to them…same as I’ll ignore what you have to say unless I find it interesting or worthy of reply. Big boy rules out here, sport.

That's a good thing thing IMO

All records indicate that those are the kinds of relationships Haley developes with his players. that might mean that Haley and his players are starting to understand each other.

It's nice to see Haley holding EVERYONE accountable.

Even the best punter in the league. I have a good feeling this week against the Cowboys. They’re on the ropes…the Chiefs are starting a brand new quarter of football and will hopefully come out with a win.

If only Cassel would watch gametape of Aaron Rodgers and take hints on how to deal with pressure :)

Penn State to Kansas City...Always a winning combination.

by YNinja on Oct 7, 2009 7:05 AM CDT reply actions

That is not on Cassel...

Those plays were designed to get the ball out FAST!!! Haley doesn’t appear to have anything like that in his playbook cuz I sure as hell haven’t seen it.

You know some of those quotes...

make it sound worse then the actual article reads…

I was like “damn Haley getting into it with Colquitt? What’s going on?”

then I read the article and I was like “damn nothing is going on”

+1

Read this article and comments on this article, then thought we had a situation.

Read the Gretz column and realized there was no situation. Even Colquitt admits he could’ve done better punting. If the HC recognizes that you can do better and doesn’t call you out on it, then he’s not doing his job, right?

Funny thing to read some of the comments on here about Haley in the last couple of weeks. Last year, folks were complaining about Herm not holding players accountable. This year folks are complaining about Haley holding people accountable. Somewhere in the background I hear Ricky Nelson singing Garden Party (the old farts reading this know what I’m talking about)…

Haley is a passionate coach. There are going to be “discussions” on the sidelines — its going to happen. This is not a bad thing.

"Every day is an evaluation and if you’re not out there how can we depend on you? If you’re out there and you don’t know what to do, how can we depend on you?" Accountability -- Haley-style...

I think I hear him too!

Are you referring to Ozzie & Harriets little boy? Yeah, should he stay with the old or dare he try some new. Either way he had fans /or critics, so what’s a fella to do?! For you youngsters, who don’t know Garden Party, here is a version from You Tube that explains it:

I agree completely with this statement...

“I’m taking this thing a little further. I think the Jared Allen deal has firmly placed the Chiefs in the funk they’re in today”

That trade singlehandedly screwed this team BIG TIME!!! It seemed like we were getting a fair deal at the time but the draft picks have been questionable (other than Albert of course).

Watching Jared Allen beat up on Aaron Rodgers the other night reminded me of what a huge impact he has on the game. It will take us years to recover from that move.

Fucking Carl!!!

by Chiefsfan1970 on Oct 7, 2009 9:16 AM CDT reply actions

Watching that game

Was 3.5 hours of my daydreaming about what could have been. If we kept Allen, stayed with the 4-3 scheme, generated pressure with our front 4, took the burden off of our aging secondary, drafted for the OL instead of CB and S, put Dorsey in his natural position…yeah lots of daydreaming there.

But in our current scheme his talents would be wasted. He sure is a fun player to watch though.. My goodness, what an exciting player! I miss seeing him running around in the backfield at Arrowhead.

Whos to say JA couldn't transition into a great 3-4 olb

I not saying he would be a beast like he is as a 4-3 DE but If Tamba can make the transition fairly well, why couldn’t JA have done the same.

Don't Fuccop Succop

by chicks_love_chiefs on Oct 7, 2009 10:05 AM CDT up reply actions

Yeah, I could see him

in that DeMarcus Ware, Shawne Merriman type position of a pass-rushing OLB. He certainly has the speed to do it. Heck, he may even have the speed to do some coverage if need be. But he’s just so darn successful blasting off of the end of a 4-3 defense, who has the nards to try to put him in any other position?

by Tadpui on Oct 7, 2009 1:32 PM CDT up reply actions

The Curry vs. Jackson debate is pointless

I don’t understand why the author from Draft Board Insider wants to compare the performance of an OLB in a 4-3 scheme to a DE in a 3-4 scheme. Of course the OLB is going to look better, whether he’s a better talent or not.

A 3-4 DE’s job isn’t to rack up stats, it’s to tie up blockers. While Jackson hasn’t wowed me this year, I think that he has a good motor, high energy level, and as he gets more strength and experience, that he’ll be a good DE for the Chiefs for years to come.

I have a feeling Curry is just going to end up injured. Although I have to hand it to him, 22 tackles, 1 FF and one INT is a pretty good resume for the first 1/4 of the season. On paper.
