Why LT might be a bigger need that RT

A point I always harp on is playing guys out of position. if you play any chess you know you can't switch a pawn and rook; it just won't work. Positions in football are, for the most part, the same way. When people complain that Branden Albert is not playing up to expectations, I always defend him as a victim of poor placement. Albert was a great LG in college. We go draft him and wonder why hes not a phenom at LT. Well it just isn't his position. Given this, I'm thinking that when Brain Waters is gone, the natural replacement is Albert. I'm starting to favor putting Waters on the market as soon as now so we can offload his contract and make room for a young Albert at his natural position. Waters does not seem happy here and is entering the twilight of his career. He certainly still has some market  value so he is a perfect trade candidate. For now RT appears filled at least adequately with O'callaghan and Ndukwe so unless we pull a player for player trade (Waters for good LT), which has become rather uncommon, then we are left with a hole at LT.

Next offseason might see the chiefs looking for a LT and C to round out a good line.

yeah, this is a bit of a dead horse

but, I’m starting to come around…

Rookie LT, Albert, Rookie C, Waters, O’Callaghan
with Ndukwe replacing Waters at some point

that could be a very good OL.

But, Albert CAN still make it as a LT, and he’ll have all season to prove that he can.

* "I doubt anyone will miss Connor Barth except UCrawford"
* the LB corps may become the biggest strength of the Chiefs in 2009
* The OL is NOT as bad as you think it is... give it time, and you'll see improvement this season

I am getting a vibe...

that Waters might not be with us next year.

if that's the case... Ndukwe is a competant RG

I'm thinking he gets shipped for a third

in which case we could find his replacement with that third round pick

Time is a great teacher... unfortunately it kills all it's pupils.

I say replace Muir...

OL should not miss assignments and be out of postition like they are….These guys are pros…

I've been...

saying we should draft a franchise left tackle with our first rounder (god I hope he is out there) and move Albert to left guard and make Waters our stop gap center. I think Waters can play center because he is short, stout, and is a leader on the line. As for the right side, we could use both our 2nd rounders and trade back into the first if there is that Micheal Orr type giving us a pretty dominant line. RG can be addressed in free agency, I was think of Lutui from Arizona.

LT Okung (OT, Oklahoma St), Albert, Williams
LG Albert, Alleman
C Waters, Alleman
RG Lutui, Nudukwe
RT Trent Williams (OT, Oklahoma), C Brown, O’Callaghan

Tell me you don’t like that offensive line. Also, it is very realistic. We have to address other needs in free agency.

Not to mention...

we would be the deepest team in the NFL for LT. And the Chiefs have tinkered with the idea of Waters playing center before so its not as far fetched as you might think it is. I think the RG spot would have good competition with Lutui and Nudukwe. This could be the best offensive line in football if they gel well together. What do you guys think?

by I_Bleed_Red. on Oct 6, 2009 6:30 PM CDT up reply actions

I like...

Okung at LT if we decide to take a lineman in the first 5 picks. I am not sure about Albert at LG, that is usaully a road grader like Waters. If Albert is athletic, which I think he is, then I can see him more of a RG (taking the roll of Will Shields) or a RT.

O’Callaghan might stick because he looked good right out of the shoot. That would leave only center and RG (if Waters flies the coup).

ooops...

that would leave center and LG.

I like...

the idea of moving waters over to C and we draft a project center while he learns for a year or two…. but I don’t think there is anyway we get okung and williams… I’ve seen projections where williams is a top ten pick

by callmesir on Oct 16, 2009 4:10 PM CDT up reply actions

yeh

but i dont htink were going to get a starting LT for what they would give us for waters. we deffinatly need to spend our 3 out of our first 4 picks on offense, i think we should move albert to RT draft a LT in first rd and a guard and center in later rounds or free agency

all those posts and more have been made

all this person is trying to do is relay their ideas from “their” minds on how to improve the Chiefs, let them relay their opinions and thoughts, some people on here like to think long term and mull stuff over in their heads, i being one.

by jrcnc on Oct 6, 2009 7:01 PM CDT up reply actions

all of that is going to well

nothing wrong with looking ahead….. its obviously giving us something to talk about

Too early to bail on Albert

I think he played well enough last year to show he has some potential in this league. I remember John Alt being considered a washout his first 2 or 3 years between injury and technique problems. He went on to become the best tackle we ever had next to Jim Tyrer.

As of right now

The biggest question with thinking about the draft, is what kind of team we will be. If running, is it time to look for LJ replacement? If passing, does Dez fit the bill? Better defense, Eric Berry? Right now we just have too many holes to really look forward to the draft.

by BAMFSpecialOps on Oct 7, 2009 11:38 AM CDT reply actions

I like Albert at RT. It would be hard to move him to G knowing that we basically traded Jared Allen for him and a G is not enough compensation.

by wilson123 on Oct 7, 2009 12:07 PM CDT reply actions

ive seen enough

this offensive line is terrible including albert. however i feel that coaching is a bigger issue than talent. Goff has to go he is consistent in the fact that he stands around and whiffs on every block he is supposed to make while our quaterback is getting pummeled. With our o-line and coaching the way it is now i am certain we will have the first or second pick in april. im not sure if there are any tackels out there worthy of a top 2 pick so i would trade the pick for a young veteran lineman and another pick or two in rounds 2-4 and get more o-lineman. the chiefs can however use the pick and throw away the next couple seasons waiting for the line to gel. i personaly do not want to see many more seasons with top five draft picks as this becomes habbit (ask cleveland and detroit) before you know it we will be picking another player early while glen dorsey and co will be in there 5th 6th 7th year free agents desending skills etc etc etc. its a vicious cycle that needs to stop now. its one thing to be physicaly outmatched and get beat. that is not whats happening though goff needs to go watch the tape. we need to find anopther grunhard szott sheilds roaf …those were the days

We will draft Eric Berry...

Secondary ( Particularly) Safety is our biggest problem. Albert hasnt played great, but he is our LT of the future. He has shown he can play. I wouldn’t be mad if we used our 1st 2 picks on Defense. Eric Berry with our first, Eric Norwood with our 2nd. Then Sam Young, Cambell, or O Dowd with the falcons pick. I dont think Waters is going anywhere. He has a good 4 years left. Remenber, a bad all around o line can even make an all pro look bad. Im surprised people arent praising our o line more after this weel. O Callahan play very well, Albert cut back on the penalties and they did this against one of the best D lines in football. I think this o line will gel, unlike last year when they didnt gel all year. Goff will be gone next year. Honestly, I think this team only lacks 2 play makers. I think we should trade Hali after this year(depending on his production down the strecth if its high trade him to a 43 team for a 2nd or 3rd) Draft Norwood to play OLB, which I think he will be a great pass rusher. Draft Demarco Murray and a G with our 3rd and 4th. Also we have to see what Pioli does in FA. Logan Mankins added to play LG and Waters at RG, with O Dowd at C and were good.
