Happy Game Day! Chiefs -v- Giants. Potential for ugly, but even in the face of that I can't help but be hopeful. Let's hope our guys go out there play smart, mean football.

Again, that’s close to the routine of all 32 NFL teams. The only difference is what happens when the Giants get back on their buses and head to the airport to fly back home to Newark.

Generally, they fly back celebrating another victory.

The Giants have become the best road team in the league. They are certainly the best road team of this decade and maybe decades before the 2000s. While other teams struggle to win away from home, Tom Coughlin and his team have found a formula that allows them be winning guests.

In their last 22 games played away from Giants Stadium in the New Jersey Meadowlands they are 18-4.

Flowers calls the old friends now, making himself stay close so he never drifts too far from life’s realities. Some of them work in hospitals or in office buildings. Some don’t work at all. Can’t find a job. Times are tough, Flowers says. He says that when he presses the phone close, his friends’ emptiness comes through clear.

He sits in the Chiefs locker room, his hands clasped between his knees, and talks about the time he came to a crossroads and an unlikely thing happened: Flowers caught a break.

Flowers realizes he’s fortunate to be where he is from KC Star

Star-divide

The Chiefs spent a boatload of money on lifelong backup quarterback Matt Cassel, and Todd Haley — somewhere between his many jobs as head coach, offensive coordinator, player alienator and amusing sideline ranter — seems unsure about Cassel’s talents.

The offensive line is a disaster, the just-off-the-waiver-wire receiving corps scares no one, Larry Johnson looks broken down, the defense’s front seven can’t get to the quarterback, there have been penalties and astonishingly bad game decisions, and nobody seems entirely sure what new GM Scott Pioli is thinking inside the Chieftagon.

I suspect this is how many people (most people?) see the Kansas City Chiefs these days. Hopeless. But is it really as bad as all that? The truth is: When things are this bad, it is hard to get a clear look at what’s really happening. This team has played so bad the last two years that only the truest of the true believers could see through the fog and find something good to say.

There might be positives in Chiefs’ play … but you have to look hard from KC Star

Mike Livingston passed his first test as the Chiefs’ starting quarterback.

Livingston, thrust into the lineup because of injuries to Len Dawson and Jacky Lee, calmly directed the Chiefs to a 26-13 win at Denver in front of 50,564 at Mile High Stadium.

The Chiefs, who opened the season with four road games because of baseball conflicts at Municipal Stadium, improved to 3-1.

Carolina Panthers: 30% chance (2.4-1 against)

Tampa Bay Bucs: 30% chance (2.4-1 against)

Cleveland Browns: 31% chance (2.2-1 against)

WHEN THE GIANTS HAVE THE BALL

Look for them to try to exploit the middle of the Chiefs’ defense, which has been susceptible to passes for the first three weeks of the season. And the prime candidate to do so might be TE Kevin Boss, considering Eagles TE Brent Celek had 104 yards and a TD against Kansas City last week and Ravens TE Todd Heap, who’s not the player he once was, actually looked like his former self in Week 1 with 74 yards and a touchdown against the Chiefs. Boss has only six catches so far this season and has yet to find the end zone after leading the team with six TDs last season. This could be his breakout week.

NY Giants Game Day: The breakdown vs. Kansas City Chiefs from NJ Star-Ledger

“(Thursday) I was really down,” the Giants’ third-year cornerback said before adding with a laugh: “But at least I’ll be healthy for the playoffs.”

An optimistic attitude while dealing with such a frustrating situation is a very good sign for Ross, who will miss his fourth straight game Sunday when the Giants take the field against the Kansas City Chiefs without him. Last year, without a nagging injury to keep him down, the former first-round pick was nonetheless glum about football, and has admitted he “fell out of love” with the game and had little desire to practice or play on some days.

It is proof the Giants’ front wall is getting better with age. They instinctively know what the other is doing, something that will come in handy today at a loud Arrowhead.

“We’re able to go on the road and play non-verbally,” Diehl said. “Based on the look and the formation, and what we’re running, we don’t even have to communicate and we know what the other people are doing on the line next to us.”

Big Blue line always puts up a united front from NY Post

Taurus Johnson, whose NFL aspirations were on hold since being released by the Kansas City Chiefs at the end of training camp, had made a valuable connection earlier in the year...

...The Lions called Johnson on Tuesday to tell him they wanted to sign him to their practice squad.

But Edwards said attrition still took a toll because if an injured player was not put on injured reserve, the team could not fill his roster spot and was essentially practicing and playing short-handed, wearing down healthy players. In one practice during Edwards’s tenure with Kansas City, the Chiefs were so depleted on the offensive line that a defensive lineman had to fill in. He went the wrong way on a play, leaving quarterback Tyler Thigpen (now with the Dolphins) exposed to an onrushing defensive player, who accidentally injured Thigpen’s knee.

Expanding N.F.L. Schedule Would Mean Stretching Players from The New York Times

First, I’ll discuss the obvious.  The Chiefs are a better football team than they displayed last weekend.  Dwayne Bowe, their only play-making wide receiver, (my apologies to Bobby Wade) was a late scratch.  Linebacker and big-play specialist Derrick Johnson was inactive.  They played on the road against one of the best teams in the NFL.  It was an impossible-to-win situation.  A loss was to be expected, and a bad one at that.  But bad losses one week don’t mean anything the next, not in the NFL. Especially when you’re playing at home.

You ever notice when Joe Posnanski writes a negative piece on the Chiefs no one cares...

But when Whitlock does it’s the the end of the world?

The offensive line is a disaster, the just-off-the-waiver-wire receiving corps scares no one, Larry Johnson looks broken down, the defense’s front seven can’t get to the quarterback, there have been penalties and astonishingly bad game decisions, and nobody seems entirely sure what new GM Scott Pioli is thinking inside the Chieftagon.
So, there you have it. I’m not going to lie … I don’t quite see it the way Michael does. The Raiders loss was fluky, sure, but only a really bad team could have found a way to lose that game. And the lack of competitiveness against Philadelphia was more discouraging than the score. Everyone knew the Chiefs had no chance — the Chiefs included.

Posnanski wrote this article but I bet Whitlock takes at least half the blame for some reason. Weird Posnanski get a free pass for writing negative articles but Whitlock does not….

Well

Posnanski does it in an objective, rational way. Whitlock just complained he doesn’t have the same media access he used to.

Bah...it doesn't matter they are both saying the same thing...
“The Chiefs suck – Jason Whitlock”

Reaction: OMG what a Shitlock…this guy is an idiot…etc.

“The Chiefs sucks” – Joe Posnanski

Reaction: I miss Posnanski…ever since he left for SI and we have is SHITLOCK…I HATE HIM!

I see what you're saying

But I do think there is a difference.

I think it is because Whitlock almost always writes negative.

I said almost because I am giving him the benefit of the doubt. I don’t remember any positive articles but I hope he has written a few at least.

When we win the SB, I would bet his article will begin with: Yes the Chiefs finally won the SB, but

Chiefs set an NFL record, most roster changes in 1 season.

you have a point, but ...

Jason’s style and reason he was hired is to stir up the pot, make you think and look twice – if he wrote only “nice and positive” things he’d have run out of words to write a few years ago

I like Jason, I like his style … you have to take him with a grain of salt and remember what he’s trying to do (stir it up) … I don’t always AGREE with the guy, but he is, at least, amusing … he’s often spot on correct, like it or not … and he speaks out for what he believes in (and I wish more columnists would)

Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisiton!
