The assumption was that the talks were happening between the Chiefs and Johnson's agent, but PFT's Mike Florio has learned that the discussion has reached higher levels of the sport.
The NFL and the NFLPA have been discussing how to handle the issue because this is a potential precedent-setting case. A player hasn't been suspended for comments on Twitter before, and we're reporting that both sides fear the possibility of a bad outcome.

Winning begins with Attitude - Haley and Pioli will be winners in KC!
I'll forever be a Chiefs fan! Only God himself could take that away from me, but when I get to my great reward, I'll rejoin two bigger fans, my Mom and Dad.

I see it more as a precedent-setting case for the first time gay slurs have been used in the nfl
Atleast where punishment was given out. I could be wrong

I don't think the punishment is for the slur.
It is for the attitude toward fans and the public display of contempt for the coach. If only the slur had happened there would be no suspension IMO.

Funny how we were calling this offseason the best offseason ever
Now I bet the Broncos are saying “This is the best SEASON ever.”
If given the choice between best off season or season I would take season every time. Joke is on us

"I will fight you!"
"What is your weapon?"
"My bare hands!"
"That is stupid. I will use a sword and I will cut off your bare hands."

Mea Culpa! Maxima Mea Culpa!
Haley’s manner and apparent approach were refreshing. Pioli’s resume and numerous “small moves” were encouraging. Still optimistic for the long-term, but was disappointed by the short-term. I expected the small moves would result in small improvements. Didn’t expect the team to take a step backwards. Also, my worst fears about the secondary were confirmed 10 times over. With Flowers and Carr, I’m not sure if it’s just technique and coaching or if I’m just seeing players with glaring weaknesses that Cunningham went to greater lengths to conceal.
As for Denver, I knew Cutler was a punk, and misjudged McDaniels’s handling of him. Even though I thought Cutler’s departure would ultimately benefit the team, I figured McDaniels was out of his depth and had shat all over his first season. Because I live in Colorado, rootin’ for the Broncos is doubly distasteful to this Chiefs fan, but it’s harder and harder to put my finger on anything I HATE about ’em. McDaniels has gone a long way towards winning my heart, PLUS the struggles of the Bears are vindication.
No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.
