How the Chiefs Can Beat the Giants
I promise I'm not hopped up on crazy pills. I fully understand that the Giants are heavy favorites against the Chiefs and have every right to be. The Chiefs are weak at the offensive line and the Giants are Goliaths on the defensive line. If you've read any of my previous posts this week, that statement shouldn't come as much of a surprise to you. The Giants should win on Sunday. However, as the phrase goes: "any given Sunday."
With that in mind, let's think about some factors that could tilt the game in the Chiefs' favor.
- The Arrowhead Advantage: It's still early in the season and my guess is that the Chiefs' fan base hasn't been deflated yet. If the Chiefs can play some good football early in the game, the crowd will be in the game and they will become a factor. Chiefs' fans are dying for some good football. It won't even take a lead for Chiefs' fans to erupt. My guess is that if the Chiefs can keep the first half to within one touchdown, the crowd is going to be fired up. And anytime Arrowhead gets loud, it's always a huge advantage for the Chiefs.
- The not-Arrowhead Disadvantage: It's interesting that fans very often talk about homefield advantage, but they often don't think about visitor disadvantage. I know that sounds contradictory, but what I'm trying to say is that most fans realize that a loud crowd can prove to be a huge advantage for a defense. They often forget that when their team is on the road, their offense is negatively affected by crowd noise. Strange, but true. The Chiefs' offensive line will play a little bit better because they will have more control over timing. They'll be able to hear Cassel's snap count, they'll be able to vary the timing of the snap count, and the offense as a whole will be able to make adjustments at the line of scrimmage. That's especially helpful for a largely inexperienced offensive line learning their way. They have a hard enough time gelling as a unit as it is. Building that cohesiveness becomes that much more difficult under adverse conditions.
- The Chiefs have Cinderella Potential: I think what most people find so disappointing about the Chiefs' performance against Oakland and Philly is that each game was a step down from the way they played against Baltimore to open the season. The Chiefs played a tough Baltimore team on the road and they almost came out with a win. They accomplished that by playing mistake-free, tough football. Arguably, you put that Chiefs' team at home with a more comfortable quarterback and they could have slid away from Baltimore with a huge upset. After watching that game, I saw the potential for the Chiefs to be a huge sleeper this season. No---they never had potential to be a .500 team, but if they can play the way they played against Baltimore consistently, they can beat a lot of subpar teams and become a tough out for good teams. It goes like this: if the Chiefs play mistake-free, tough football on a week where the Giants aren't completely on their game, the Chiefs have a chance to compete.
- The Chiefs Might Have a Defensive Matchup They Like: For as inconsistent as the Chiefs' defense has been this season, they have actually looked pretty decent against some very good running attacks. Where the Chiefs look really soft is on pass defense, primarily due to their complete inability to put any pressure on the quarterback. The Giants are banged up at receiver and they don't have a standout unit to begin with. They are probably going to do whatever they can to establish the run game and that's the type of game the Chiefs can hang in. The Chiefs' secondary will need to be on top of their game, though. The Giants have a superb offensive line and the Chiefs' pass rush is still horrendous. It's not an optimal situation, but the Chiefs might put just enough pressure on Manning to force a few key coverage sacks.
- Team Psychology: This week is a major test for Todd Haley. Any coach can get a winning football team to come out of the locker room with guns-a-blazing. The true test of a coach is how he motivates his team when the chips are down. Given Haley's re-found focus on discipline, he'll either resurge this team, or he'll have lost them. I have a feeling he'll do the former. I would hope the Chiefs have enough pride to know that they are a lot better than the way they played in Philadelphia. On the flip side, the Giants are coming off of a cozy win against Tampa Bay where they dominated in all phases of the game. Good teams are always instructed to never look past a weak team like the Chiefs, but that's easier said than done. There's a very good chance the Chiefs play fired up while the Giants play in coast mode. No matter how good a team is, they're always prone to these supposed "trap" games.
- Matt Cassel: I've commented many times about how much I like Cassel's attitude. I think he's a natural, born leader and you can't say that about a lot of quarterbacks in the NFL. I have a good feeling that Cassel is going to make sure his teammates walk out of that tunnel in Arrowhead ready to play. I realize that the Giants' pass rush poses a bigger challenge to the Chiefs' offensive line than the Eagles' blitzing pass rush did, but I cannot stress how much the Chiefs' poor offensive line play was affected by confusion and mental mistakes. I can handle an offensive lineman getting mauled to the ground---that's inevitable, given the lack of talent on the Chiefs' offensive line. But I can't even count how many times our offensive linemen panicked after the snap when two pass rushers came after them and they had no idea who to block. Rather than put a body on the pass rushers, they usually let both of them through. I expect that this is something Haley and staff addressed to the o-line and I sense that it will be much better on Sunday than it was last week. If the Chiefs can at least put a body on Giants' defenders, they can at least buy Cassel a few more seconds in the pocket. That will at least give Cassel the opportunity to finish his dropback (something he couldn't do against Philly) and also the opportunity to take off in the pocket.
Don't get me wrong: the Chiefs have more than an uphill battle to beat the Giants. I do expect that they will play better than they did against Philly and I still believe that there is a chance for the Chiefs to stay in the game if they can play mistake-free, tough football. After all, if you can't beat a team, sometimes you just have to beat 'em when they're asleep.

Very well thought out.Yes it’s true “on any given sunday”.As a long time fan I’ve seen it happen to & for us in games. It’s time for this team to stop using excuses & play well.Confidence comes in many forms & this team needs some desperatly. This can be a turning point game for the chiefs.Win & go on a small tear (5-6 win season).Lose & it could wind up a very ugly season. My 1 wish is that Haley needs to stop making so many changes every week.He chose the team to start the season & now seems like he’s 2nd guessing himself. It’s wreaking havoc on players that need not look over their shoulders every time they make a mistake.

I
think Haleys treating this whole season as an evaluation process. it was clear that he was trying to keep Cassel from getting injured last game and not trying to win.
He didn't care if Cassel MIGHT get injured
He was pissed they only ran for 3 yards in a half. Can you really blame him?

I’ll pass the hat around. Anything you have will help the “Teams Playing Against the Chiefs Actually Do Commit Holding Penalties Sometimes” fund.

I'm curious as to why people think this is....
…and the Chiefs’ pass rush is still horrendous…
Everyone seems to be giving the DE’s a pass saying things like…"OH well ya see….Dorsey is a 3-4 DE and, blah blah…he doesn’t have to look good, or get any penetration…etc" And I say BS, just because he’s a 3-4 DE, and won’t put up great numbers, doesn’t mean he can get dominated every play and it be acceptable.
Obviously the pass rush is a huge problem. No secondary in the league can consistently cover receivers for 7 seconds. It’s just too much time and someone is going to get open eventually.
Is it the DE’s fault for not opening up lanes for blitzing LB’s, or are the LB’s not doing their job? When announcers make comments like “He has time to balance his checkbook back there..” someone is fucking up. IMO Dorsey looks like shit, as well as T Jack. Everyone wants to give them a free pass because it’s the 3-4. The lack of pressure is either on the DE’s or the LB’s…..who is it? (Dorsey, Jackson) or (Hali, Vrabel)

EXACTLY.. The time is always NOW
I understand the whole it takes time to develop, but a few years?? Come on..
That is one problem I have with today’s market/football. These NO EXPERIENCE players come in and expect these HUGE salaries immediately. Its totally backwards from how real life works.
The Chiefs haven’t been to the playoffs (and one-n-done as usual) since the end of the 03 season and haven’t been to the Super Bowl since a man was on the moon and Nixon was President.
Don’t tell me to give em time.
This season is a wash and I understand that, but I do expect this team to become more competitive as the weeks go on.
You get paid big bucks pal, play to that level.
Rowdy
Gotta Call You Out
The Chiefs were in the playoffs against the Colts in January, 2007. Yes, we were one and done, but we were there since ‘03. And I agree with the rest of your assessment, screw giving them development time. Yes, I agree that they may take awhile and three games may not be enough, but their experience was earned in college and a lot of that should have translated to talent in the NFL. Yes, he’s facing better, more talented players, but I’m not giving them three years when they’ve cashed their checks already. It’s time for these guys to step up. They say don’t let your mouth write checks your ass can’t cash. Well, how about these guys let their asses cover the checks that have already been written?
Put this in your pipe and smoke it:
1. Chiefs will be at least 8-8 and vie for division champs
2. DJ will break out and finally have his year
3. LJ returns to form
4. DBowe drops will reduce

Hali and Vrabel
I’ve been trying to focus on Dorsey, he seems to be doing fine. We shouldn’t expect much out of Jaskson, just like we shouldn’t have expected much from Dorsey in his rookie year. Hali still looks inconsistent. Vrabel has done close to nothing.
"What?!?! I aint no Obama for the weed!"
-Turk McBride
Vrable needs to produce soon or be benched for Studebaker. He’s been virtually non existant, and looks even worse than the done player he was last year. Since Haley/Pioli have no problem cutting the old guys they brought here who have failed, Vrabel, Engram, and Goff should be next on the list.
It doesn't look like these old man signing are working out...
Vrable, Engram, and Goff as you mention aren’t doing much…Thomas didn’t even make the team…and Mike Brown looked bad last week. (Though he looked pretty good week 1)

Could be a chicken and egg thing
Vrabel isn’t the same player he once was… the D-line is still adjusting as you have Dorsey moving to a new position so we don’t know what he is and Jackson is a rookie. NT is still a question mark. Hali has been and always will be a complementary pass rusher. He needs an elite guy on the other side and Vrabel is not that.
Pass rush better
The pass rush looks better this year than it did last. I admit, that’s not saying much, but considering it’s a whole new defensive scheme, two DEs playing where they’ve never played before (one in the NFL, one moving out from being interior), well, it’s encouraging. OTOH, it’s still awful. But some progress is better than none. Also, most defensive linemen suck their first year, regardless of who they are.
by Watson_H_Rhodes on Oct 3, 2009 9:54 AM CDT up reply actions
Re: What's with the pass rush?
In order of priority: 1) no nose tackle; 2) no LBs; 3) inconsistent play from the DEs.
Jackson and Dorsey are taking a lot of heat, but the anchor of any 3-4 D-line is the nose tackle. He’s the guy usually eating 2-3 blockers. Even when the D-line opens up lanes, the OLBs just aren’t good enough to get in the backfield. Vrabel is too slow and Hali too often looks like he’s dancing instead of attacking.
But for everyone out there, just make sure you don’t use tackles/sacks as the measure of Dorsey/Jackson’s success. The only way you’ll know if they’re doing their job is if you pay close attention to them, because they’re not going to make a lot of plays themselves, but they will open up opportunities for others to make plays. That’s just the nature of a 3-4.
I think most of us are aware 3-4 DE's aren't going to put up numbers any better than 4-3 DT's
But there has to be a way to judge their performance on numbers. Just not their numbers. The number the LB’s put up should be an indication that the DE’s arent getting it done.

Chiefs have 19th ranked run D
Allowing 120 yards per game, one yard better than the Giants. Not great but not terrible I suppose.

Only one ranking difference
But the Giants run D is far worse then ours if you look into the stats further,
"Success is never ending, failure is never final."
I think.........
That our LB’s are the problem, and that they are the one’s not getting to the QB. Dont they send the LB’s on the blitz when their in the 3-4? D.Johnson is hurt and Vrabel is a step slow. The Giants are going to get about 15 sacks in this game, and M.Cassel is going to be lucky if he doesnt get killed. Man we need to be thinking about drafting LB or OL then WR.
It's going to bad
in my opinion. I can not see many situations playing out where we win. Just hope it’s one of those Sundays where we play above our standard and them below theirs.
We
wont be THAT bad for much longer. we’re like an expansion team right now with new people at the 3 head positions. Theres no way we can be dominant THIS season until we become one unit.
Someone
posted earlier this week that Eli hasn’t had a bad game yet this year. Maybe this is it? He normally has a handful of poor games every season. We can cross our fingers! And let’s see more Savage and Charles!

Only way the Chiefs win this is if they stop the run
and make Eli beat them. Unfortunately, this was the same plan they had going up against Philly and Kolb torched them.
"What?!?! I aint no Obama for the weed!"

Giants have the number 1 pass defense....allowing only 124 YPG
And number 20 rush defense…giving up over 6 yards per carry…if we can get the line to throw a block, Larry might have a decent day. I don’t expect the pass game to be much better than it was last week.

If we played the same way we did against Baltimore
We absolutely have a chance to beat the Giants. I don’t see the Giants being any better than the Ravens and change one spectacular thirty yard catch and the Chiefs would had been in a real position to at least send the game into overtime.
Check out my blog on software development:

Dude, Chiefs were beyond lucky in that game and still lost by 14.
If we play like we did against Baltimore, its going to be a long long day.

I guess people forget about the phrase…Any Given Sunday.
If those that believe so strongly that the Chiefs are destined to lose and have zero chance, here’s your opportunity to cash in:
Max out your loans, Get a flight to Vegas, (non-stop via Southwest), put all your money on the Giants. It’s a no brainer sin’t it?…but how many of the despondents wouldn’t be nervous about doing that?
That’s why the games are played. Anything can happen.

any given Sunday ...
a football could bouces out of two defenders hands go in the air for 4 seconds and fall into your totally lost wide receiver hands who will have an open field in front of him going for TD in the last minutes of the game.
Since we have few lost wide receivers … i like our chances :P
I don't think anyone can forget about "any given Sunday"

great article
tough to see a win, BUT, if we play mistake free, and can finally keep penalties down(including on plays that gain over 10-15 yards, or when near FG range) we may have a shot.
if charles can break a long one, if our D can force 3 and outs….
most of all, arrowhead needs to be arrowhead, not this weak fan response that we’ve seen at recent chief games
I know its not a great product, but we can win this game, cmon fans, be the 12th man ole marcus allen spoke of.
Alright so if we play a perfect game and the Giants fall apart we have a chance? Nice.

giants dont have to fall apart, D just has to make some plays
no reason to be rude, my analysis is basically the same as everyone else, we play smart football and have a chance….this is a really good football team against a really poor football team, the fact that it would take a perfect game to win shouldnt shock anyone who saw the last 28 games.
I wasn't being rude, people are so sensitive anymore.
There was a time when you could make a smart-ass comment and people took it for that. I guess those times are gone with all the new people, and the doom and gloom.
ok serious replay:
I agree if we can keep the mistakes down and catch the Giants off guard we do have a chance to win the game.

DBs have to stop dropping easy INTs
That would help
Decent post but you left out the most obvious way to beat them.
The Giants are only 21st in the league in run defense which doesn’t seem so bad but when you break the run defense down further it gets worse. They give up 6.1 ypc which is good for 2nd worst in the league and they have given up a 2nd worst amount of 20+ yard carries. Then the icing on the cake theyve given up the worst 1st down % in the league at a porrous 33%. If the Chiefs are going to win we have to play disciplined, run the ball and even then we’ll need them to make a few mistakes.
"Success is never ending, failure is never final."

The G-Men will prevail If the Eagles gave you all that trouble you really dont stand much of a chance against us. Yeah yeah Any given sunday what a bunch of crap that is.Bigger better stronger teams always find a way to win. I do feel for you guys being you got to play the whole NFC East back to back to back like this but you might have a shot at beating those Cowgirls Tampa almost got them. Hey and Jon Yoon must be an idiot ( The Giants are banged up at receiver and they don’t have a standout unit to begin with. They are probably going to do whatever they can to establish the run game and that’s the type of game the Chiefs can hang in) Watch the game then tell me our receivers are banged up lol. I didnt come on here to rag at you guys but it`s time to be realistic. GO BIG BLUE

But I’ll try. The G-Men may have better players than the Eagles, but unless they blitz 95% of the time like the Eagles did, Cassel will eventually have time to tear you apart and put the game on Eli & Lawrence Tyne’s shoulders. There is a reason we got rid of Tynes!

but I predict a KC win! The G-men, G-Ladies, G-Strings, whatever they want to call themselves are going to learn a cruel hard fact. Haley does not lose at Arrowhead. Let me repeat that for those of you that think the Faiders game somehow was a legitimate win, Haley does not lose at Arrowhead.
Accordingly, sorry New York wannabe a winners, but you are going to lose this week! Haley just won’t allow you’re team to steal a win in Arrowhead!

I have been a chiefs fan for 50 years. I have seen good times and bad times. I don't care if we've lost 50 in a row and we just got blown out last week
Every Sunday I turn the game on thinking we can win. Every week it seems like there’s a score that makes me do a double take. Teams win games they shouldn’t all the time.
I really, really want revenge for that soul-crushing game against the Giants in December of 2005. Every missed tackle on Tiki Barber is etched into my memory. I want Jacobs to rush for negative yards tomorrow.
