The Case for Eric Berry (or any good safety the Chiefs can get)
I had to choose this topic as my first post on AP seeing as I have a little insight on the matter. I played free safety in high school, and nothing bothers me more than the glaring need the Chiefs have at the safety position. I never feel comfortable when the opponent has the ball, and the quarterback drops back to survey the field.....ever. Anytime said quarterback has a few seconds (in many cases against us more than 3) to survey the field, we have a great chance of getting beat deep. Brown, Page and company are out of position way too much for NFL starters. I knew when I played if we got beat deep and I wasn't on a blitz, then I had to take responsibilty for the play, because a safety shouldn't let anybody get behind him. I've been all for us drafting DL the past few years, but I think we have the players we need to develop at this position. Dorsey and Jackson are showing improvement against the run, and we can get some good pass rushers in later rounds to rattle the quarterback more next year. But I don't think we can draft another position this year that is gonna have a greater impact on this team than safety.....go ahead and jump......
I don't care if it's Berry or Mays. And I really could care less if safeties are not "typically taken that high in the draft". We have the need, and there are two game-changing safeties up for grabs in the range that we will unfortunately be picking. Berry is definitely my top choice because the guy is a freakin ball-hawk and he will be where he is supposed to be when we need to hold on to that slim lead in the 4th quarter. We will find the OL, we will find the pass rusher, but Berry is definitely a talent we can't afford to pass up. Especially the way we have been squandering picks the past few years. I don't wanna see anymore projects or people with "upside". I wanna see ballers that have shown that they will make plays that will affect the outcome of the game. Players that we can depend on to know where they are supposed to be, and get there half a second early so I can actually enjoy watching Sportscenter again! Give me a safety Pioli.......and let's get this defense a reason to be feared again.....
Eric Berry (5'11" 203)

I know folks are hung up on O-line but...
We can get solid O-linemen in the second, third, fourth and fifth rounds. Indeed we need solid O-linemen. We need to create a unit with solid contributors. However we need a freak of a difference maker on defense, preferably a safety like Berry or Mays. We’re likely to pick top 5, and we’ll be able to get that kind of player from that slot. My point is that we can actually have both.

My thoughts exactly.....
We have a shot at a couple of playmakers with how high we are gonna be picking in what is shaping up to be a deep draft. I know Pioli might be high on Suh right now, but DL can wait until a later pick. I’m thinking: S, C, RG, OLB, NT, TE, KR/PR

I think Pioli is high on Suh too....
Id die if we took him thought I know he is a beast but we cant take a 3rd Dlineman in the first again and most likely the top 5….
Suh
Is nonsense. We need a NT and Suh is not that. Look to Alabama if you want a NT. I like Berry but would prefer to go OL
Predictions for 2009:
LJ runs for 1800 yards
Bowe in the pro bowl
Chiefs D finishes in the top 10 in points allowed
Chiefs 10-6

I don't want "solid" O-Line guys, I want THE BEST ...
and if it bothers y’all that we might have a “top 5” choice and that’s “too high” for an O-Lineman, fine … trade down a few spots, get an extra pick somewhere … but get OL in 1st 2nd 2nd 3rd rounds please please oh please!!!
the OL is THE most important piece for the offense, period … the better the OL is, the better our RBs are, better RBs = longer TOP = easier on Defense = well, you get the picture, it all starts in the trenches
O-Line, O-Line, O-Line …
Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisiton!
OLine is very important
But dont forget we have two 2nd round picks…..if we really wanna go OLine. With our 1st pick we need that game changing playmaker that we very much deperately need…..
"Its going to be a challenge, its going to feel like forever, and there will be difficulties. But we will emerge on the other side of it stronger than we were when we entered." ~ Sudden
It's the sum of the parts that make a whole
with the O-line this is probably more true than any other unit. We don’t have to have ‘the best" o-line players to have ’the best’ O-line. We have to have solid talented guys with chemistry, and playing time together so they can develop some cohesiveness. IMO we have a left tackle and that’s the only position you use a top 5 draft pick on. Sad part is, we do have top 5 draft pick needs in other areas.

It's not a hang-up. Maybe if the wording of the question were modified...
Definitely need to draft OL this year and probably make a move or two in FA, assuming nobody emerges this year.
But that doesn’t mean you need to use your 1st rounder on OL. When it comes to the first pick, though, I think a great DB, be it CB or S, would do a world of good.
No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.
As of October 13, 2009,
Berry has never been flagged for a penalty in his collegiate career.

Wow
Didn’t know that one…….makes even more sense to have a player like him on our team!

Thanks...
I been coming to the site for months. Only problem is people post my thoughts so fast I can never get something fresh for everyone to read.

I've heard THAT before.
You’re always repeating what other people say – that’s my only gripe.
Just kidding. Nice first Post.

Not hard to repeat on this site man.....
We all love the Chiefs and we definitely see the same problems with this team week after week.

I have always been one to want an OL early and often,
but after watching Berry I would love to see him in a Chiefs uniform. I’m sick of WR going off for 150+ yards every week because our DB are out of position or just can’t tackle. If Berry is there I hope we grab him and run like you stole something. If not then back to OL. Take Berry 1st round and OL with both 2nd round picks. There is enough depth that we will get players we need in the 2nd for the o-line.
Donmt believe the hype
Much rather have Mays over Berry
I'd rather die on my feet than be living on my knees
LOL??
Mays is much more hyped up than Berry. I believe that if you switched Berry to USC and Mays to Tennessee, then Berry would be much more talked about than Mays. Its all about exposure in college football.
Before you judge a man, walk a mile in his shoes; after that, who cares?! He's a mile away and you've got his shoes!
xactly
I have not watched these players and can’t evaluate them. However, my concern on a USC guy is whether he is truly that individually talented or does he just look like good because the overall strength and talent of the whole team.
Air Cassel - approved for takeoff
