Summary of Kansas City Chiefs Power Rankings - Week 8 edition

6ixm37_medium

Good afternoon AP!

Welcome to the Week 8 edition of the Chiefs Power Rankings Summary. I'm hoping this will be a welcome refuge from everything that is LJ. Unfortunately after the Chargers ass-wooping, the Chiefs have slid back down the rankings over various publications.

I've added SBNations Power Rankings to my list...I've actually been reading the SBNation mainpage quite a bit lately. I like the way they mix in humor into the analysis...its kind of like The Onion meets ESPN whithout raming it down your throat like Page 2 does.

Anyhoo, on to the rankings...

Star-divide

CNNSI - Don Banks - 28 (Previous Week 27)

Larry Johnson doesn't know it -- and I'm not sure knowledge is one of his strong suits -- but he did Todd Haley and Scott Pioli a favor with his nonsense this week. L.J. gave the Chiefs new head coach and general manager the opportunity to show everyone that it's not going to be business as usual with them around in Kansas City. At some point with every losing franchise, a line in the sand has to be drawn.

ESPN - Paul Kuharsky- 28 (Previous Week 28)

A time to rest and possibly regroup for the one-win Chiefs.

FOX Sports - Adrian Hasenmayer - 28 (Previous Week 25)

After showing signs of life recently, can Todd Haley keep his team together after the latest Chargers blowout and LJ blowup? With the running back's tread definitely worn down from 400-carry seasons thanks to the Herm Edwards era, Larry Johnson has again worn out his welcome with coach Haley and many KC fans after showing his malcontent mouth.

CBS Sportsline - Pete Prisco - 26 (Previous Week 26)

Scott Pioli has to know what a big rebuilding job he faces. That offensive line is bad right now.

Editors Note: Pete Prisco is to sports reporting what pudding skin is to pudding. That analogy made alot more sense in my head than it does on paper. Really Pete? That's the kind of "deep analysis" that Pete spews every week, I have no idea how he has been doing this for so long. His breakdown of the Colts: "Peyton Manning is good at football". Thanks again Pete...continue to analyze football by reading box scores in the paper monday morning and watching SportsCenter.

WalterFootball -  30 (Previous Week 28)

Larry Johnson is a Twitter Monster. Check out these Tweets from the worst starting running back in football and my thoughts on them:

1. "My father played for the coach from 'rememeber the titans.' Our coach played golf. My father played for redskins briefley. Our coach. Nuthn."

Larry Johnson's dad played for Denzel Washington? Wowowowowowowowowow!!!

By the way, Johnson sounds like a little kid saying, "My dad can beat up yours!"

2. "think bout a clever diss then that wit ur [expletive] pic. Christopher street boy. Is what us east coast cats call u."

Johnson's an "east coast cat?" Really? He went to high school in the Penn State area, which is not on the East Coast. He now plays in Kansas City, which is not on the East Coast. When was Johnson indoctrinated as an "east coast cat?" I'd like to know this because I'm beginning to think that Johnson is a bit of a fraud.

3. "Make me regret it. Lmao. U don't stop my checks. Lmao. So 'tweet' away."

Here, Johnson was bragging that he makes more money that some guy who commented on his Twitter page.

Well, Johnson's right. He does make more money than that guy. But Johnson just happens to be lucky; not all of us are cunning enough to steal millions of dollars from a clueless NFL organization.

SBNation - Matt O'Brien - 26 (Last week 27)

The Chiefs may cut Larry Johnson within the next week for his critical tweets about the coaching stuff and use of a gay slur. How will they ever replace his 2.7 YPC?

So no suprise here. Instead of analyzing the Chiefs play, your national media decided to focus on Larryjohnsontwittergate. I guess I don't really blame them as until the Chiefs prove on the field that they deserve mainstream attention, the only time we will make headlines is for Asshattery like this.

So overall, the rankings vary from 26 to 30, with an average around 28, which I think is fairly accurate.

Thanks again for reading,

Craig in Calgary

I have us above the Browns thats it...

I think STL is better then us until we beat them, They best us in the preseason and I think they both are equally bad so the Rams get the edge on the chiefs. I dont see how you could put us in front of the raiders when they beat us and put up a better fight against the chargers and beat a team that blew us out.

by darwithabar on Oct 28, 2009 3:34 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

you gotta be kidding me

STL isn’t better than ANYONE

KC is above (or equal to):
STL
Tampa
Detroit
Tenn
Buffalo
Wash
Oak
Cle

all of these teams are BAD right now… it’s splitting hairs on which is “Worse”

* "I doubt anyone will miss Connor Barth except UCrawford"
* the LB corps may become the biggest strength of the Chiefs in 2009
* The OL is NOT as bad as you think it is... give it time, and you'll see improvement this season

I would put Tampa under KC too...

Tenn would maybe be a winnable game but they have more talent, Oak beat us stag, Stl Beat us in the preseason and both have been very similar, Detroit would probably beat us and considering the last time we played them they beat us. Washington has double are wins and was missing their top 2 linemen when we played. Buffalo has a double our wins. Id put us at either 30-31.

The fact about splitting hairs I agree, but Those teams have to have the edge on us when some of them beat us this year or the last time we played they blew us out. Also, If they have more wins then they’re better. Oakland not only beat us but they beat a team that blew us out. I hate to admit it, and I didnt think it would be like this at the start of the year, but the chiefs are in the bottom 3 in the league.

STL is absolutely atrocious

0 wins this season is enough for them to be ranked lower than the Chiefs. That preseason win doesn’t mean anything

and upon further review and a quick trip to wikipedia,

The teams have actually alternated back and forth for most of the decade as far as who wins the governers cup. Neither has one back to back since KC did in 2002 and 2003. I may have just won the award for looking up the most pathetic, irrelevant stat in KC Chiefs football.

My bad didnt know we beat them last year...

Anyways, Im not saying they are head and shouylders above us, but we are not better then them and thats a fact. I love the chiefs but we have the worst o line in the league, 26th is a fantasy.

by darwithabar on Oct 28, 2009 7:11 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Anyways, Im not saying preseason matters...

but you cant put a team that is equally bad like the chiefs in front of the rams. I dont care about the 1 win vs. the redskins. The redskins are a very bad team and STL almost beat them. If the Chiefs played the Redskins 10 times the Redskins would win 5, I think that is the same with the Rams. You cant confidently put the chiefs ahead of the Rams though, You guys only do it because your fans. I used to do that all the time, Reality has hit me that this team is one of the worst in the league again and until they prove to me they can win, I will not give them my confidence.

by darwithabar on Oct 28, 2009 7:18 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

What???

So, you are saying St. Louis beat us in the Preseason; therefore, they are better than us. Since when do preseason games mean anything? Detroit went 4-0 in 2008 preseason, but then went 0-16 and had the first pick in the draft. The preseason record is and always has been irrelevent.

The Chiefs are worse than the Raiders because they beat us. I don’t agree with this, but head-to head in the regular season is always a hard point to argue. But, the Chiefs win in the regular season against the Redskins on the road would fall under the same category wouldn’t it?

I voted for the Chiefs as 26th in the power rankings.

26th – Chiefs
27th – Detroit
28th – Cleveland
29th – Oakland
30th – Tennessee
31st – Tampa Bay
32nd – St. Louis

Actually, I can objectively rank the Chiefs higher than the Rams

yes, I am a homer fan but I hae watched most of the Rams games also. They look absolutely miserable. Plus, you said STL “almost” beat Washington. Chiefs “almost” beat Oakland, Dallas, and arguably Baltimore. So that is one win and 3 almost wins for the Chiefs. STL…… one almost win and one preseason win. So even if we count a non-existent stat such as “almost wins”, the Chiefs are still better.

This is kind of like debating on which is better…………. a blackhead zit, or a plantar wart. :)

The year the Patriots went 16-0 they went winless in the preseason

the year the Lions went 0-16 they won all their preseason games…

Clearly the Preseason is the best indicator of a good team

StL pretty much has the same team as last year...

and they have lost 17 games in a row I think .

There's so many bad teams I think you can justify us anywhere between 24-29

Hard to justify us at 30, but does it really matter?

We fur sure have to be ranked hire than the Rams, Titans and Skins.

I would say we are better than the Bucs, Raiders, Lions, Browns, and Panthers

I'd argue Lions and Panthers

Lions are a pretty good team with Stafford and Megatron healthy.
If Jake Delhomme went 0 for 0 for 0 yards, I still think they could run all over us.

This is just fanatic at its worst....

Im an optimist and I couldnt put us at 24-29 without knowing in my heart I was wrong and only doing it because I love the Chiefs. I do it every year before the season but Im not anymore. No doubt in my mind STL would have got their first win if they played us like we played against the chargers on sunday. How can you give this team any cred after that embarrasment. All those teamss have a better coaching staff then us besides Oakland and Oakland is more talented.

by darwithabar on Oct 28, 2009 3:48 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

yeah but we would have gotten our 2nd win

if we played the Rams and they played like they did against SF and IND. But overall, Chiefs edge them out. Not by much, granted. But STL is ridiculously pathetic

26th.............

I like to look at the negative Net Points. Chiefs are at -76.

St. Louis is at -151, the Raiders at -115, Tennessee at -114, Cleveland and Tampa at
-107 and Detroit at -85. I agree with above though: What does it matter? Many very bad teams and many variables.

This last game sure didn't help us though -30 pts right there

So how many of those teams mentioned go QB in draft?

QB?

StL should be the only one on the list to go QB
Cle, TN, Oak… they all have recent high draft pick QBs… if they have to give up and draft another, that’d be a big setback for them.

Carolina should be drafting a QB for sure, as well

* "I doubt anyone will miss Connor Barth except UCrawford"
* the LB corps may become the biggest strength of the Chiefs in 2009
* The OL is NOT as bad as you think it is... give it time, and you'll see improvement this season

by stagdsp on Oct 28, 2009 5:24 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

All of those teams might...

St. Louis is a lock to go QB at least in mock draft land.

Cleveland has a new regime, GM and Coach, Quinn was benched and Anderson went 2-17 in their win in Buffalo. They could go QB.

Russell got benched, and looks terrible. Think maybe Crazy Al goes QB again?

Bud Adams wants to see Vince Young. Fisher wants Collins to remain the starter. The team is 0-6, if VY gets on the field and tanks, Tennessee might be looking QB also.

I hope they all do go QB. It’ll improve are chances to take Eric Berry or whoever else Pioli is after, because QB won’t be on our shopping list.

.............and using this same approach (as above)

New Orleans is the #1 team at +111
Indy second at a +102
and, New England third at a +100

I went with 27....

Even after a dismal loss to the Chargers, i still see 5 teams that are worse than us. Not in any certain order, Raiders, Rams, Titans, Bucs, and Jags. Jags, being the next team we play, also i think are the ones closest to us in talent and production.

Rams…Their whole franchise is in the gutter right now.

Raiders…I will never say they are better than us, even with a SB victory!

Titans…Where do you go from here? An aging QB and an unproductive young QB to lead the way, a shotty defense at best, and a coach who may be wearing out his welcome now.

Bucs….Similar to the Titans they have a great need at the QB position and also have had a huge decline in their defense’s play in recent years. Rather than having an old coach wearing out his welcome they have someone just getting used to the job, as do we.

Jags….I know this one is a stretch, first off they are at least a .500 team which we are not close to. But they are also VERY inconsistent 2 of their 3 wins came from teams on my list here and one, the Houston Texans, came against a team almost as inconsistent as the Jags. I like to think we have a good chance in this game, especially with the bye week in there. I kind of look at them as i did washington. Even though they had a better record and the marque players, there are just so many changes in their team now, you dunno which one is going to show up.

To Defend LJ's "East Coastness"
Johnson’s an “east coast cat?” Really? He went to high school in the Penn State area, which is not on the East Coast. He now plays in Kansas City, which is not on the East Coast.

Penn State is in University Park, PA – which is about 3 hours from Philadelphia. I’m pretty sure Philly is considered “East Coast” in most circles. I live in Nashville, and most people around here consider this “The South” – but it’s not as “The South” as Georgia, Mississippi, Louisiana or Alabama. The comment makes it seem like he grew up in Des Moines and is claiming to be East Coast.

I’ll have to agree that KC is not on the east coast.
