Please Read: Use the Flag Feature
A quasi-repost from late August.
Hey everyone,
Lots of activity today on the site and a lot of emotional talk as well. I'm here to remind you of the rules, on the front page no less so you know it's important.
I'm only just now checking out the hundreds and hundreds of comments today, most of which were about Larry Johnson. So far, I've already read more insults and issued more warnings than I thought I ever would.
And because there are so many comments, please flag comments that break the community guidelines.
The flag button is available underneath every post and underneath every comment. Click actions to access it. It's sort of like the Rec feature we all use so well but for negative stuff. It doesn't auto ban anyone. It helps us keep track of comments people think we should take a look at more closely - insults, racist or ethnic references.
I ask that you use this because, as you've probably noticed, we get a ridiculous number of comments on the site now and us and the moderators have a lot of to keep track of. If you use the Flag feature on a post or comment, it will show up in our comments dashboard, making it really easy for us to address the problem.
Right now, it only takes one flag to turn a comment red and report it on our dashboard.
If you're wondering what should/should not be flagged, please read these:
99% of the etiquette problems on message boards and blogs stem from insults. Avoid doing that, and you're probably good.
So, if you want to keep AP sane as we get more visitors and commenters, please use the Flag feature on comments and FanPosts. If you need to email us, send it to chiefssportsblognation [at] gmail [dot] com.
Thank you everyone!
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Arrowhead Pride's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Arrowhead Pride writers or editors.

Losing sours a lot of people
We need to weed out the ones that ruin the conversation.
If everyone uses the flag feature, that process becomes a lot easier.

I kind of miss the offseason.
The conversation was a lot more level headed and informative. We know have a lot of people who just like to bitch and moan.

in the regular season I for the most part gave up on commenting or posting period
because of a few members in particular.Just because you are a regular or a moderator

No it's not an excuse
We ban whoever breaks the rules. We have to.
There are a couple of regulars who are on the line now. It sucks but those are the rules.

im not going to outright agree or disagree on the Vermeil thing
but the guy did let our Oline get old without replacing players and he NEVER cared about our defense whatsoever. It was all about scoring 50 points a game and then fielding a junior college team on D. That said, his regime was definitely fun and exciting football to watch, you got to give the man that.

We've had this debate on another thread and I don't feel like rehashing this
Vermeil wanted to get younger and focus on Defense…Pederson wanted to “win now”.
Pederson trumped Vermeils wish to draft Troy Polamalu and drafted LJ.

Bowe in the pro bowl
Chiefs D finishes in the top 10 in points allowed
Chiefs 10-6

now if only the Chiefs had a player named Modo … then someone could do a post about him, and then later another sort of partial repeat post that would, of course, be called QuasiModo

Some guy used profanity on me and told me to go F#@$ myself and I got the the warning.
The flagging works for those who aren’t a regular. I found that out today.
Predictions as of 06.24.2009.
Larry Johnson will be a top 3 fantasy pick once again in 2010 (after a monster season in 2009.)
Dwayne Bowe will be a 2009 Pro Bowl selection.
Brandon Flowers will have at least 6 INTs in 2009 season.
Todd Haley will have a sideline shouting match caught on TV yelling at one of his asst. coaches.

That’s for sure.
Also, people should be reminded that this is a blog, not a message board. FanPosts are to add CONTENT not just to start a discussion out of nothing or a couple paragraphs. Maybe I’m wrong in looking at it that way, but it seemed a lot cleaner before it turned in to a message board environment.

It is equally horrendous.
A slur against a group based on their race, religion, sexual preference are equally abhorrent.
The greater point is that when an offense against one group is marginalized when it is the equal in discriminatory nature proves that social consciousness has not progressed. Using a slur against someone based on the fact they were born differently from the majority or disabled later in life, stems from the same root cause as any other bigotry or discrimination.
It may not be personal or seem as sensitive to you, but it does to those who are slandered and hated. Furthermore, it is a from of hate speech, which does nothing other than to begat hate.

Personally...
…I’ve been avoiding posting comments and FanPosts in the days after a game due to the responses that happen right now. I understand the general nature of the fanbase when the team is failing this hard, but it’s almost suffocating. I don’t consider myself “old hat” by any means, but in the short months since February, I’ve noticed quite the turn towards the derogatory by the fanbase.
I’m not screaming for optimism, because we all know that it is found in short supply right now. I am hoping for a change towards constructive criticism. Too often lately it’s been “no, you’re wrong because you’re a f*&#ing @sshat”, instead of a factual, thought out response disputing the original point. Too many posts are dissolving into bickering and name-calling, which defeats the purpose of the intelligent conversations that can happen on this site.
In the past month, I’ve seen several posts from Chris and Joel restating the rules and discussing how much banning and warnings they are issuing. That is unnecessary. They (and the other moderators) are putting in time for something they love that they’re watching turn into a bunch of pissing matches. The internet is the easiest place to throw insults without recourse. There are those who are just blatantly obtuse, but there are some who push the envelope with satire that others don’t catch, and get offended when other get “butthurt”. That doesn’t help, and it’s causing extra tension.
So my advice (which means absolutely nothing, but I’ll offer anyway), is for everyone to put some kid gloves on, take a step back, and think before you start attacking someone (satire or not) until things calm down a bit. It’ll make things easier to read for everyone, and it’ll make it MUCH easier for Chris, Joel, and the rest of the mods. The last thing we all want is this to go down because they’re sick of what it’s become. Thanks.

I've been around DT
…mostly reading and deciding that “emotions have gotten the best” of some of the more recently joined AP’ers.
Yes, it was pretty emotional last year as well, but I think that most of the folks on here agreed to disagree and let the reader’s decide who made the more viable argument.
On some occasions it did get personal, but for the most part things got ironed out very quickly and most of the “vet’s” would let bygones be bygones and would move onto other topics where they would actually agree on things.
Basically constructive criticism of the team even with conflicting viewpoints.
This year is a bit different considering the volume of “rookie” posters on here. That’s not a slam, but a compliment to AP for the quality of posts. Unfortunately some have taken the course of using this site as a forum to get belligerant with off-color remarks that have nothing to do with the Chiefs per say.
I’m here reading…perhaps I’ve been saying less but I’ve also found that adding a fuel to a fire that is based on derogatory remarks doesn’t add to the quality of the debate.
Yes, if the posts are full of caps and a tirade using “F” bombs….I’ll skip over it and just consider the poster as someone with a poor vocabulary with a minimal grasp of the english language.

I'll raise my hand
Yesterday I admit I flagged a few post/comments, But not as many as I wanted to. I only flagged the most serious offenses because while I do believe in your right to to free speech, I don’t believe it gives you the right to break the rules and to say whatever you want to. A lot including myself were upset with all that came out yesterday and most of us wanted to have our voice heard, unfortunately many of the post went way too far.
I’m not a moderator but I am a Fan of both the Chiefs and of Arrow Head Pride. I don’t like for either one to be trashed and that was yesterdays Perfect storm. Ugly things were said from APer’s to APer’s all brought about by the ugly thought’s of a Chief. Many were upset by the “Poor choice of words” used by LJ, while others saw not problem with the words but more by his stupidity in using them. I myself was upset that to me this has been one long drama with LJ that has been going on since he came to KC.
The thing is We are ArrowHead Pride. others may run it and take care of it but without us there is no AP, We need, no we Have to look out for AP, we have to take care of it as it is ours we have to draw lines as to what is acceptable and what is not. We failed at that yesterday, we allowed the bad feelings to take over. Slights and vague insults were over looked in the heat of the moment and when those seemed to have gotten by, they grew into more and stronger insults and judgements, til they grew to the point of this post.
I’m one of those people that feel we need to vent our frustrations from time to time, and to be honest yesterday if I had been a moderator quiet a few of you would have been given a 24 hour timeout. So I guess what I’m saying is thank the moderators you do have, Take care of this site and flag those comments that upset you rather than just flying off the handle and posting an ugly response. Stop and think by responding to a bad or ugly post you just give it credit and your just fanning the fire. Flag the thing and tell the Moderators about your concerns and move on, don’t let someone bait you into saying something that might get you flagged or banned, because for everyone we lose here on AP we grow weaker until someone comes along to replace them…and you may not like what that replacement has to say at all.
Sorry for the long rant, I stewed on this most of the day yesterday and lost some sleep over it last night, I’m glad I had this opportunity to get it out of my system.

No one sees flags but us
So if you feel something is inappropriate then you should flag it.

Morning All
I’m also sure I got grouped there in as well since I called Matt out for his comments.
I assure you all my intentions were not to personally attack one member of AP, but rather show how that even by using “silly jokes” it is still offensive.
Chris/Joel/other mods/respectable members, I apologize to you all. I really like this place but I get fired up when I see a hurtful comment(s) such as were posted in a thread about how someone just got in trouble for doing the same things. I know i dont have great insight on the Chiefs as some of you do but I do like to discuss the Chiefs and football in general with most of you.
Again I apologize since I was the biggest perpetuator of THIS post in the first place.
"I will fight you!"
"What is your weapon?"
"My bare hands!"
"That is stupid. I will use a sword and I will cut off your bare hands."

I'm still not convinced I deserved a flag...
people may have been a little flag happy… oh well… It’s not like a flag means all that much…
how many flags till you’re banned… I already have 2 I believe in just a couple of months…

Flags don't equal bans
Just lets us know where inappropriate comments may be. Just don’t insult people, directly or indirectly, and you’ll be good.

Question for Joel
Can this post be moved up to the recommended list, after yesterday I think everyone should read it and it is starting to get buried under the new post of today.
is it me? or isn't about time the Lamar Hunt trophy belonged to His team?
I’m a Chiefs fan Dammit and I’m damn proud of it!

It needs 4 or 5 more recs for that.

Others please rec this article.
I think it is important that stays on the recommended list for a while.

I will have to start using the flag feature.
I have only used it a couple of times in the past because I have been hesitant to try and muzzle what people say, but unfortunately the quality of comments on this site have dropped dramatically in the recent months and perhaps it is going to require the participation of everyone here to make an improvement.
Here is hoping people realize that this is the best place on earth to come and get info and talk Chiefs football with Chiefs fans, and that all the other garbage can go somewhere else.
Thanks Chris, Joel, and all other moderators for all he work you guys do.

I find this to be a disturbing trend.
Slander, insults and verbal assault are replies I have come to see quite regularly on any site that allows comments. It seems that no matter what the subject matter is we have become so polarized that there is no longer the ability to meet in the middle. We are all supposed to be Chiefs fans here. That is the common ground we all stand on and it is from there that our dialogue stems from. I guarantee that there is no one here who is not frustrated with the Chiefs so that is not a viable reason or excuse for the asinine and/or vicious comments posted by some.
It befuddles me when some people claim that they are a fan of such and such team only to see them rip into a fellow fan because of a comment or opinion as opposed to simply debating with them. I am like one fellow commenter (The Truth) that said
…I’ll skip over it and just consider the poster…because in this medium, writing is basically saying it and what comes out of mouths do affect others. I sense that some folks do not even take into consideration or for that matter care that in this type of forum their level of respect is gauged by others through their words and how they interact with others.

A good rule of thumb I have heard in the past...
is that if you wouldn’t say it to someone sitting in front of you then don’t say it here…And in some cases don’t even if you would!
