I am sick of you KC fans who...
just make Larry out to be a huge part of our reason of being so bad. GET REAL. I know as being a fan of a losing team, you try and point out why and who is the reason we are this bad. Let me tell you why, here it is: It is not because of LJ, it is simply because of our o-line. You guys who believe Larry is washed up are crazy.
Yes I know Larry can be very foolish with his words and actions, as we have seen in the past. But please do not make him the scapegoat. If he had a DECENT line behind him, he would have already passed Priest's alltime rushing record for the franchise. Larry simply cannot produce with a line that does absolutely nothing. And to all of yall who suggest that Cassel has been a let down. Please take what I say about Larry's production and take that to how Cassel has played. O-Line is where the heart of the team is. No, it is not fun to draft a fat oline guy on draft day with your number 1 pick but it has to be done sometimes.
I was telling my dad that I hoped Hunt opened up his pocketbook after this season and go after some great, even alright linemen so we wouldn't have to draft a linemen with our first pick, even though it would probally be the smartest thing to do and will most likely happen. I want to see us go after FA's for the line so we can get an explosive game changing playmaker with our first pick.
Larry is not the reason this team has been setback, he acts foolish and needs to quit it, but the truth is is that Herm and Carl screwed us, and if Pioli doesn't quit looking for washed up NE Pats or "his right 53" then we wont progress all that much. I love the Chiefs, it is frustrating right now, but times will get better, I just hope sooner than later. I ask for yall to quit attacking Larry and look elsewhere (the line).
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Arrowhead Pride's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Arrowhead Pride writers or editors.

"You guys who believe Larry is washed up are crazy. "
LJ turns 30 in a few weeks. There has been like two running backs in NFL history who have ever been productive after the age of 30.
There has been one RB in NFL history who was productive after taking as many carries in one season as LJ has.
This is based off of past history, which is the best indicator of future history.
As for being asked to quit attacking LJ, that’s kind of hard because his derogatory comments aren’t the first time he’s done this. Remember last December when he said he did not want to be a member of the Chiefs organization? Or in February when he said he hates Kansas City?
Most people today aren’t mad at Larry because he’s struggling on the field, they’re mad at him because he consistently displays a lack of class and a level of immaturity not found in the NFL very often.

spot on, Joel
not at all an LJ fan here, and I’ve been dying to see Charles more, and I’m delighted KSmith is coming back (no, the OTHER KSmith) … but that said, I don’t think LJ is the sole reason we’re 1-6, I’ve never said that or implied that
as you said, Joel, this is about immaturity and a classless, tasteless act (more than one, actually) … the tweet regarding Haley was bad enough, but the homophobic slurs and money rants on twitter were way over the boundary of common decency … and today’s homophobic slur hurled at Kent Babb in the locker room simply reinforced the fact that LJ is out of control and has no business being in the public eye

You can believe it is historical fact but...
the Truth is that older backs that didn’t carry the ball a lot when they are younger can still produce. LJ started one season in HS, one Season in NCAA, and has the equivalent of 4 NFL seasons. Marcus Allen rode Al Davis’s pine for 4 or 5 years and still had gas in his tank damn near 40 and he had the wear and tear of High School and NCAA
Predictions for 2009:
LJ runs for 1800 yards
Bowe in the pro bowl
Chiefs D finishes in the top 10 in points allowed
Chiefs 10-6
by bonesjackson on Oct 27, 2009 9:56 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
But the one season with HUGE # of carries (400+?)
is enough.
Your point about older backs with low miles is valid. LJ had a couple high mileage seasons. And I don’t think he’s lost all that much from what he had when Carl drafted him. But he hasn’t learned much since then, either, and he’s making WAY too much money to behave like such a punk.
Far as I’m concerned, though, he’s done in KC. Let him try for a Corey Dillon Comeback somewhere else.
No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.

Umm whoa there
noone has ever made you come to this site and if you dont want to visit then that is of every right for you to decide that. But you posting that you are not coming here is a kind of rediculous. I am in no way attacking you as a person but I feel that there is too many people that get there feelings hurt too easily. And Larry getting bashed from the media and everyone else in KC should not just make you not want or not want to come here and visit. Larry knew what he was doing. He took the time to not just say it but write it out and post it. Not only did he do that, but he also then retaliated against the fan who also had every right to say what he wanted. So before you start making judgement on the people around here and start backing LJ, maybe you should take a step back and look at the complete lack of maturity that was displayed.
All I am saying.

Who can blame him? The Chiefs organization has pissed me off beyond belief. We did ABSOLUTELY NOTHING for the oline except get a couple washed up/mediocre linemen.

and that lack of O-Linemen has what, precisely, to do with LJ's slurs on twitter and verbally?
you know, when you get paid the money that LJ (or any other pro player) gets, you shut your mouth and do your job the best you can … especially considering that your money comes from other good, hard-working people who fill the stands and buy the jerseys that all goes to pay said salary
if LJ wants to play the little game and rant and rave like “everyone else” then he can step out of the limelight and get a factory job and sweat and work year round like everyone else … then nobody will care what he tweets
until then he has a higher standard to maintain, and he’s failed at that

I bet when (b/c this is no longer an if) we let go of him, if he gets picked up by a team with a good offensive line, you and everyone else will be eating your words. Watch.
by ChiefsFanInTexas on Oct 26, 2009 8:10 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Who?
Who will pick him up with all of his baggage? What team with a good offensive line would want a 30 year old, malcontent, spoiled child, who can’t keep his hands off of women, who can leave his ego at the door? Those teams are usually contenders and already have a solid running game. So, who will pick him up and make us eat our words?
And if you’re wrong will you come back and eat yours?

But uhhhh didn’t alot of people think that about Cedric Benson with all his off the field issues (DWIS)? Yes. Is he on his way to comeback player of the year and leading the NFL in rushing? Yes. Some teams that are hurting for a position that bad do not care at the time about their off the field issues. Look at T.O.; can’t stand the guy but he’s going to keep getting picked up. Management do things to win, and thats what they are supposed to do. This is a business, there are second, third, fourth, fifth, however many you want to go, teams will give him a chance, I guarantee you that my friend.

I could give a rats ass if LJ goes to another team and rushes for 2000 yards next season
He’s doing NOTHING for us but stirring up trouble.
If he goes somewhere else and does well, then yay for him. But his 2.7 yards a carry aren’t worth the aggravation.

He's already made a difference now
He made the HC question his coaching ways and how he’s been treating players. Watch, if Haley changes his approach even subtlely, you will see significant changes in the way the team plays.
Predictions as of 06.24.2009.
Larry Johnson will be a top 3 fantasy pick once again in 2010 (after a monster season in 2009.)
Dwayne Bowe will be a 2009 Pro Bowl selection.
Brandon Flowers will have at least 6 INTs in 2009 season.

Cedric Benson is 26 years old, LJ is an old 29-30.
They’re completely different players right now. RB’s are like cars, but RBs miles are carries. Benson has 798 to Johnson’s 1375.
You didn’t answer the question. Who do you think will pick him up? A team with a good offensive line, who would that be in the middle of the season, now with GLADD getting into the fray?
I know this is a business, but why is it good business to bring in a guy who is old, can’t average 3 yards a carry has zero touchdowns in 144 carries, and has all that baggage?
by bansky on Oct 26, 2009 8:46 PM CDT up reply actions 1 recs
LJ was a old rookie coming in in 2003
He was 24 at the time as a rookie – an old rookie.
If you take away his rookie year where he had only 21 touches, he barely played a featured role in the pros til he was 25 years old. Based on that, LJ is only 5+ years in the league minus the 2007 season where he got injured. His got young legs still, capable of 2-3 more productive seasons.

I can already see..
that if he goes to another team he will probably produce big numbers….for a season. Then he’ll back to his lackluster performances because he’ll be pissed off about something else. If he really wanted to be in KC I think he’d be doing better on the field. And in turn, if we had the great offensive line, then he would be doing better & maybe actually want to stay here. But let’s be real, has he EVER been happy in KC? What, the first year he stepped in for Priest & that’s about it. He bitched & whined before that & it never stopped after that.
This is just my opinion.
The reason I can’t stand Larry Johnson anymore (and believe me, I once thought he was amazing) is because of his mouth & his pure disrespect for our team. He’s not the same class act TG was, that’s for sure. Even when Tony didn’t want to be in KC anymore, he still went out & played his heart out on the field because he just loved the game.

I will eat my words. I promise.

Stranger things have happened.
Corey Dillon was a head case. Getting out of a bad situation turned it around for HIM.
Doesn’t matter. We’re LJ’s Cincinnati Bungles. We won’t be the team to profit by his antics. Some other team might be, and LJ could probably find a team in the offseason that’d offer him an incentives-based contract.
What’s funny to me, though, is that LJ was talking like he was already a rich man, and he may not earn the rest of the $3.5 million he THOUGHT was guaranteed. KC could EASILY stick it to him, AND score sensitivity points with GLAAD, et al.

I wish I could agree with you
But after the first seven games we still have Cassel running for his life, running backs taking the handoff the instant before the defensive lineman meet them, hardly any passes downfield due to a lack of time for the routes to develop. They basically ignored the line after Edwards first season and didn’t do much this time around. I’ve always been a defense first person but the past two seasons has changed my mindset. You can’t do crap without an at least average line.

Exactly
Imagine Cassel throwing to Driver and Jennings with an actual TE that isn’t a turnstile to the QB. Fix that line and a lot of the problems will just go away. Yes Green Bay’s line isn’t in great shape right now but it hasn’t prevented Rodgers from throwing for around 250 yards and a couple of touchdowns every week. You also don’t see McCarthy going for it on 4th and 1 in the 1st quarter on his own side of the field.

Go take a quick peek back at what LJ did vs. the Redskins.
How many TD’s?
How many total yards?
How many yards per carry?
Now subtract the ONE decent run and figure ypc again… 2-point somwthing vs. the Redskins? Hell, lets give him 3.2. Still sucks.
It doesn’t take the Steelers or the Ravens to stuff LJ. All it takes is a NT and 1 LB or 2 DT’s. We aren’t talking about pro-bowlers here… just any old DT’s will do.

Last year’s squad. Make shift o-line, Mobile QB, bootlegs, playmaker in Tony G + Bowe doesn’t allow LJ to be the only weapon.
Notice you kept bringing up GB, Aaron Rodgers has TEs that can catch in Donald Lee and JerMichael Finley. They also have a true FB in Kuhn. Not forgetting that they have downfield threats such as Driver and Jennings.

All I know is that
I have repeatedly seen larry run straight into the back of his O-lineman when there are perfectly good holes waiting just one cutback move away. This isn’t O-line problem, it is a running back problem. Its a lack of patience and vision. Would larry’s numbers improve dramatically with an upgraded o-line? Of course. However his pathetic stats right now can not all be chalked up to shoddy o-line play.

But I believe he was let go because CP didn’t want to fork out the money for JA and he actually got a good trade in return. A first round pick and two third round picks is pretty fair compensation. The off-field issues were just an excuse to deal him. He had the drinking and driving resolved by the time he was traded. Even Roger Goodell believed so by cutting his suspension down.

Larry = Good?? Huh?
Wow our standards are pathetic here in KC if LJ is good.

LJ....
is, was and continues to be overrated. If CP hadn’t used a first round pick on him, we could very well be talking about Derrick Blaylock…when Priest went down the first time Blaylock and Johnson split carries and put up very similar numbers. Herm ran him into the ground and CP subsequently gave him the largest contract in team history (at the time) for reasons that confound me to this very day. Unless the name is Adrian Peterson, no RB deserves that kind of money these days. Great O-lines make mediocre RBs average, average RBs into Pro-Bowlers and great RBs into Hall of Famers. BTW a RB who that is a weak pass blocker/reciever is a LIABILITY not a asset.

Larry Johnson
I’m done with LJ. This was MY last straw of caring about him as a chief running back. He will be lucky to break Holmes record even if he is close, because quite honestly I don’t think Todd or Pioli will deal with it any longer. I hope he’s gona and I hope he is gone by game time against Jacksonville. I do not care for him anymore. For the longest time I’ve wanted to see Charles and Smith get some starting reps or sharing ‘em, looks like it’s finally gonna happen.

There are probably 50 other backs
in this league that are capable of producing 2.7 YPC in this offense, including two other guys on this team.

there's probably 50 homeless guys by the railroad tracks that could get 2.7 ypc
good comment dakota…agreed!

I am waiting
for an RB who can ease my memories of Priest Holmes not playing.
The more I watch LJ, the more I think of Priest and wish he were still around.
A “real” god RB would make me say “yeah, Priest was great, but this guy is looking good”
LJ, I can’t say that. not at all.
Big Bear
BTW…
The O line needs to take a break and let the cheerleaders fill in for a game, they might actually at least distract the other team for a little while.

This year he can’t run!

Keep on bashing
everyone here loves to bash on LJ. And then acknowledge the o-line is bad but comes around and say any RB can put up a 2.7 yd average.
Saying LJ got overpaid on a huge contract? LJ played with a shitty rookie salary and ran for 20 TDs and over 1700 yds. He got paid for production and expectation of continue production – but he skipped training camp while waiting to get paid and got hurt that season in Green Bay.
why won’t you guys call out Cassel the same way you do with LJ? Cassel hasn’t done a thing for the Chiefs except empty promises and great pep talk at the podium. Cassel put up those stats for another team, he came to KC with super expectations and got paid for expectations unlike LJ – production.
What I don’t get with you guys is how you are so quick to chalk up 2.7 rush average that any RB could put up with this line? How about Cassel’s 54.8 pct completion average and a passer rating of 73? Chalk that up and you’ll see that Cassel’s numbers is only better than names like Kerry Collins, Byron Leftwich, Jamarcus Russell, Derek Anderson and rookies Mark Sanchez and Josh Johnson.
If you wanna put the claim that any RB off the street can put up 2.7 average with this line, then KC should have no problem putting Croyle or Gutierrez in since Croyle do have a 66.7 completion average with a passer rating of 116.1. And yes that may have been one game but it was against the Ravens at their house.
Todd Haley will have a sideline shouting match caught on TV yelling at one of his asst. coaches.

You are correct, LJ is awesome! He must be paid more money…he is amazing!! What a steal. We should trade Cassel and keep LJ.

Nah dude, Larry's washed up
or he is playing the game half assed. I don’t know which is worse but either are not working. And yeah are line sucks, but you can say the line argument with any running back. LJ has shown lack of vision and does not fight for extra yardadge like he did previous years. He also constantly goes down on the first hit. He is done.

well your entitled to an opinion
however, LJ can’t break past the first tackler ever. EVER. He used to drive people backwards and escape tackles. He was one of the NFL’s elite. I remember one year a commentator talking about LJ gaining 100 yds rushing in a game under Vermeil and he said “Larry could fall down all day and gain 100 yards, he’s that good”.
Not anymore. When you get almost the same amount of opportunities as Adrian Pederson, you’ve been given your chance to take the situation by the horns, be a professional and DO YOUR JOB!!
that’s what I see missed on here a lot. Too many excuses. If Cassel sucks, it’s the line. If Croyle looks decent in Baltimore, it’s the line doing a better than expected job for us. If LJ can’t run, it’s the line. It’s the play calling, it’s the coaches, it’s the fans now. It’s the hot dog guy in row 53B.
You can’t build a contender if no one is willing to step up and take ownership. Stop making excuses and blaming the guy next to them, and DO YOUR JOB!
It’s that simple. It’s not one thing or one position. When the defense takes the field and gives up 30+ points to a division rival, something is wrong there too. When offense can’t put up enough points to beat the Raiders, what is going on?
When our coach tried a QB sneak with our weak ass O line on 4th down, knowing full well that SD is going to expect a run of some type, that’s a problem.
the building is on fire!!! Not one person or one position, but truth is LJ is done. He flat sucks. He can’t run anymore and he does not care. He never did. He wanted his money and he’s not going to play hard enough to get injured before he sneaks out of KC after this year and laughs all the way to the bank. He’s an ass and an ungrateful jerk! Good bye LJ , you pathetic excuse for a football professional.

well put Kray.
Except I am all for Haley going for it on 4th down. Why not? With this pathetic offense, I say go for anything that might result in points. If I recall, that beautimous Bowe TD was on a 4th and short also. So he isn’t always trying the sneak up the middle on 4th down. Haley went for the 4th and short in Washington and failed, but still pulled out the win. I believe he was thinking he could do the same against SD. It failed miserably, but was much more entertaining than Herm the germ ALWAYS punting on 4th, regardless of inches, yards, or miles required for the conversion and the position on the field.

The fact is that the sword of the OL cuts both ways. When the OL was fantastic, Johnson looked much, much better than he was. Now that the OL is terrible, Johnson looks a little worse than he actually is. The difference is people are much less willing to let it slide when he’s paid as much as he is to overcome a certain amount of deficiency on the OL.
LJ has never been anything but a pure rusher. He’s always blocked like Mariah Carey, and his receiving has never been even average. So now that his pure rushing skills are fading a bit, and the OL isn’t good enough that he can post stats to make people overlook his major deficiencies on the field, people are definitely justified in criticizing him for his ineffective presence on the field and deplorable conduct off of it.

But what you and other Cheifs fans dont understand is that buy making Larry the highest paid RB in NFL history basically forced us to let go of Jared Allen.

LJ’s attitude effects this team. If we were undefeated it would still effect us. He is representing our team and city.
