What really impresses me about the Cardinals is their defensive tenacity along the front seven. That wasn't there with any consistency last year under defensive coordinator Clancy Pendergast. Ken Whisenhunt had the club fire Pendergast coming off a Super Bowl season, and the renewed emphasis on aggressive pass rush and run-defense paid dividends Sunday night against the Giants.

fire Pendergast?
maybe Romeo Crennel can finally be convinced to join the Chiefs

He has to go...
We could do just as bad without him…Why is there a double standard with our coaches? If he was a player he would be on waivers. We can’t get to the QB,but he keeps blitzing anyways. It’s killing us.If we can get Romeo Crennel in here we should-at all costs.

Can't get to the QB, anyway, so give UP on the blitz?
No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.

Don't give up on the blitz..
But don’t be so predictable.

Agreed
I’m hoping that Haley will agree that Clancy has to go. I wonder how much of Clancy’s hiring had to do more with who was available at the time than Haley just knowing the guy from Arizona.

Waited for Haley...
That’s what’s screwing us right now.

We've tried it with Pendergast.
Now, can we maybe give it a shot with ‘the lack of Pendergast,’ too?
I don’t get how it is that Chan Gailey got canned but this guy keeps his job.

Who would take over the defensive calls?
I don’t think Haley could do that too.

If I recall ...
We hired two not-as-good-as-advertised Defensive Coordinators this off-season. Surely the other one could take over for a while until we found a legitimate, long-term solution (read: Romeo Crennel).

So what's the difference
between one inept D coordinator and the other if we’re just going to replace them with Crennel?

Don't think Crennell is a good DC?
I definitely think he’s better than what we have had for a while.

I think the new DC in AZ is following the game plan formulated by Pendergast down the stretch last year.
Fact is, most of the best defenses are doing it, but only a few have the secondary to support it.
There are a few teams with dominant 4-man pass rush who can drop back in zone more effectively. KC isn’t one of those teams.
As I’ve said in other threads, if it’s a Catch-22, I’d as soon pin my ears back and attack. No criticism of Pendergast, there. Cunningham would protect his DBs with a lotta zone, and get burned a little less often for big plays. But I HATE the death by a thousand cuts.
This team is at least a year away from having the talent that’ll make ANY DC look like a keeper.
If they hadn’t switched to 3-4, maybe adding just one pass-rushing DE would’ve tipped the scales, and allowed for a more effective cover-2 scheme. I think we all agree, though, that we HATE cover-2, because we’ve been watching it being executed by a mediocre front 4.
Comin’ off last season, the Chiefs were pretty deep in 4-3 DTs and still in search of Mr. Goodbar at DE. If they’d just gone looking for Mr. Goodbar, MAYbe they’d’ve hit the jackpot with an Orakpo and a FA or two. And it would’ve been the shortest path to competitiveness.
Long term, it’ll probably be easier to acquire talent for the 3-4, because you can select linemen for stout, and not worry so much about your DE playing great in space. But short term, KC blew up the defense, for sure, and it’s become VERY apparent that the transition wasn’t as easy as idiots like me thought it would be.
What’s frustrating is that the 5- and 6-man blitzes aren’t getting it done. Maybe that’s a coordinator thing. I’m open to that. What I see, though, is a 3-4 without a great NT who swallows up 2 or 3 blockers every down.
No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.

What's the deal with the 3-4 ,4-3 hybrid
by idahochieffan on Oct 26, 2009 10:46 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
4-3/3-4/3-3-5
It doesn’t really matter, I would just love to see some hint of consistency. Flowers staying with recievers down the field to make a play on the ball, then Richardson forgetting he had coverage? The blitz’s have been pretty predictable, why not slide the Dline over to the left, toss Hali outside of Vrabel and see what comes from it?
One play the D looks great(DB’s making a play on the ball, front 7 stopping a run, Hali getting pressure/sacks), the next the whole defense looks confused(Portis/LT runs, Austin, etc).
I remember hearing how Clancy having a TON of plays/variations…maybe he should just slim it down..
