Cards win tonight.

The Chiefs were actually good the last time Kenny Smith has played in a game. Gives you an idea of how long ago that was. lol

Looking at the scores today

The parity (or lack thereof) of the nfl is strikingly obvious

GB 31 CLE 3
SD 37 KC 7
IND 42 STL 6
NE 35 TB 7
NYJ 38 OAK 0
TOTAL 183-23
Shows that the competition levels in the NFL are slowly drifting apart

by SuperTurtle on Oct 25, 2009 7:10 PM CDT reply actions

And 45-10 Cin Chi

So that makes it 228 to 33

Ive said this other places...

and I dont mean to beat a dead horse, but parity in the NFL is an illusion. The same teams win every year and there has been for more “dynasties” in the NFL than in the MLB as of late.

I think its only going to get worse.

The franchises that are winning are the smart franchises. They are also the franchises that aren’t afraid to make moves to piss off their fan base.

GB got rid of Favre
SD got rid of Marty, and are slowly phasing out LT
IND let Marvin go
NE Ty Law, Lawyer Milloy, as well as many others

These franchises do shit the right way.

It is more stark this year

My theory is that it’s partly due to the skyrocketing prices of early round draft picks. It doom teams that get them, especially when they miss. The common theory among GMs is that the best deal is to get a bunch of second and third rounders rather than a low first. It’s really shifted from the time when having an early pick was considered “good”. Now those teams are hamstrung by the costs. They have so much money locked up in those first rounders that they are hurt in pursuing FAs. I think it’s part of the story.

Of course the main driver is bad management and ownership changes more slowly than players and coaches and is typically less obvious.

I dunno...

I guess thats possible, but I think its that good front offices are successful and bad onces aren’t. If you make smart free agent moves and intelligent drafts then you would be fine.

Chris

In the future when tomahawk44 doesn’t post a SNF/MNF thread, would you consider making the replacement a FanPost that is promoted to the front page instead of a Story?

I only ask because when they are a Story, it gets pushed down quickly and it seems we have better traffic in them when they are visible in the FanPosts.

but I don’t understand how everyone suddenly thinks he is garbage. We have shitty players. We just simply still have too many shitty players because Herm unloaded the entire team.

Seriously. They can’t get a freaking yard. That isn’t a play call. That is just poor play. Again, I’m not saying he is free from blame but this is year one of a rebuild with a bunch of crappy players.

I just don't get the "Haley is a bad play caller" thing

He is a good play caller. We know this. He had talent in Arizona and his plays worked fine. In fact, his plays worked really well against the Steelers and their sick D in the SB.

Now he has a crap team and we are surprised the plays aren’t working out? When the players fail to execute it is easy to point fingers and say it was a bad call.

its not like he was able to watch the Chiefs suck every week last week. I think from this point on he will have a much better idea where the problem areas are. Not that he probably didn’t watch a lot of game film, but its not like he had a lot of time by the time most of the FA’s were gone and time to really scout the problem ares for the draft.

Yessir,

worked over the core of the D this year, because it tales them a little longer to adjust, then we’ll work on the O-line next year. From there we work on play-makers & upgrading the pieces as they age.

He's still getting

man-handled quite a bit but that is all part of the learning experience on his learning to use his hands & learn a different set of skills then the size advantage he has always been used to. I hate the draws too

but watch the opposing defenses. They have 8 up at the line almost every play. Teams know that we can’t burn them deep and they know we can’t protect the QB.

So if you are an opposing D, all you have to do is throw 8 men up at the line and tell your players, “if he drops back, go get him. If h hands it off, don’t worry, they can’t block you.”

That is why Haley runs so many draws and screens. He is trying to beat the arrogantly aggressive defenses. They are aggressive because there is no fear that we can beat them and make them pay for it. When we run a screen the receiver blocking is terrible.

That is what is driving me nuts when people bitch about Haley’s play calling.

It doesn’t matter. It really doesn’t matter what he calls. It will nearly always fail. Cassel drops back? 9 times out of 10 he is sacked or hurried or hit. Call a run up the middle? Nope. 8 men in the box. Run to the outside, no way, too many men up front, receivers don’t block well. Throw it deep? Sure, once in a while and if the receiver does get open, Cassel sometimes misses them.

When Cassel makes a bad throw it is magnified a million times because he so rarely gts to string anything together. He has to be perfect every time he gets a chance to do something because it could be another 5 series before he gets a chance again.

This tea has to play perfect or the other team has to be terrible (Redskins) to win. With no one up front and no deep threat and players missing blocks, dropping balls and being fuck ups in general, no plays are going to work, no matter what they are or who calls them.

PLUS ELEVENTY BILLION!!!

very well put. I hadn’t really thought of it like that, but it is 100% true. Really the only thing he could possibly do is just to spread it out and throw it out of the Shotgun.

Right

and he wants to run a pro style offense. They are installing an offense and trying to stick with it. It isn’t easy but their jobs aren’t really on the line yet. They are new.

Herm went to the Arrowspread cause he knew it was his ass. Haley is going at least get next year.

Please help send my girlfriend to Broadway! Visit http://magonbroadway.blogspot.com/

by Patrick Allen on Oct 25, 2009 9:22 PM CDT up reply actions

I totally agree

its an attempt to slow the rush &/or pop one open but out line blocks like its a screen on every play & the defense is past them before LJ even gets the ball. All Cassel can do is try to get some hang time on his passes & guess where the receiver will be because he has to throw it long before they can get free. Like you said there is no chance to get any kind of a rhythm going because they have no time. The only time that they seem to get to clicking is when they are in the hurry-up & we don’t have the talent to maintain that kind of an offense for sustained periods.

by ttownmikey on Oct 25, 2009 9:21 PM CDT up reply actions

And I am not saying Haley is perfect

and that he shouldn’t improve. But this whole “he is in over his head” stuff I don’t buy. I do not think things would be better with Chan. Haley wouldn’t let Chan go to the Arrowspread because they are trying to build a system and they aren’t going to play college ball.

Chan would be trying to call the same style of offense as Haley and he would be failing at it. I guarantee it.

Lining up in the shotgun is not "College ball"

Noone calls Arizona’s or NE’s offences gimmicks. Utilizing strengths (or moreso hiding weaknesses) should be what the headcoach is responsible for…regardless of your thought of what kind of offense they are running. Shit, if the triple option worked, I’d say run it.

I disagree but kinda agree

Haley rarely tries to throw down field to back people off, even if it is only a bluff.

He did it twice in a row today in the 2nd half and I was ecstatic (and the players were open both times).

Keeping the D honest is a rather basic tenant of offensive game plan strategy, but it only appeared in the 2nd half of a game in Week 7.

It’s not about that we can throw the bomb, it’s the threat that we might. The film on the Chiefs offensive for the entire season so far proves that we won’t even test it.

yeah but the o-line needs to occassionally pick up a blitz

rarely does Cassel have time to wait for anything long to develop. And Im not sure there is enough raw speed on this team to just be able to recklessly air it out.

Desperately hoping for Desperate Measures

by averagegatsby on Oct 25, 2009 9:28 PM CDT up reply actions

I absolutely agree

But a quick 3 step drop and throwing downfield (even out of bounds) to a WR on a go route at least makes the other team think twice, regardless of the fact it had no real hope for a completion. It is a tried and true strategy when the defense doesn’t respect your offense.

The draws have not worked at all, continuing them makes no sense. The reason for calling them may be somewhat justified, but not in the numbers they have been called and in their percentage of failing.

Backing off the defense, even as a bluff, occasionally would do far more to give the opposing DC pause than the miniscule chance that LJ might get 7 yards on a draw.

very true...

I think Haley is just scared of killing Cassel any worse than he has been lit up so far… Especially since he has probably been holding the ball a little too long anyway.

Desperately hoping for Desperate Measures

by averagegatsby on Oct 25, 2009 9:34 PM CDT up reply actions

It is not that I disagree with the draw as a tactic in that situation

It is that Haley is calling draws to LJ an inordinate amount of time. We even bitched about how many LJ draws were called during Week 1. It has continued every single week.

The other teams have film on this. The see what we are doing. My biggest issue is that it didn’t work in Week 1, we continue it, it fails, the film on it grows, we continue it, it continues to fail.

That is a play calling issue (just making a statement, not direct at you, Gatsby nor Paddy).
