Chiefs Get Blown Out at Home by the Chargers

Chiefs lose, 37 to 7.

This was easily the worst Kansas City Chiefs performance of the year. The Chargers dominated in every aspect of the game.

Philip Rivers was 18/30 for 268 yards and three touchdowns. The Chiefs gave up three big pass plays in the game, making me wonder what the heck happened to our secondary this week.

Here are a few thoughts on the game, which I'll be updating. Joel is in the locker room as we speak.

The Good

  • Dwayne Bowe made up for an inexcusable drop in the third quarter with an amazing TD catch on the sideline of the end zone.
  • 121 yards rushing is a good performance for this team right now.

The Bad

  • Jamaal Charles completely whiffed on blocking Jacob Hester on a Chiefs punt in the fourth quarter, resulting in a blocked punt/TD for Hester.
  • Dwayne Bowe still dropping passes.

The Ugly

  • Matt Cassel threw three picks and two of them were clearly the result of bad passes.
  • The Chiefs were 3/15 on third down.
  • We only had 82 yards passing.

Give us your thoughts in the comments.

Not this year that's for sure

We can easily turn this around into a decent time by next season.

It is so unbelievably bad

we started this entire year late. put us behind the 8-ball. We will stink all year and I think we will be better next year. If we end up1-15 or 2-14 I will be pretty pissed. Sure the pressure is off this year, but the goal is to show improvement and thus far we haven’t done that.

I think they will if they can find someone worth a crap who isn’t serously hurt or asking way too much money. We have so many holes to fill we cant spend on just one person

I will stand by my statement. Cassel is the least problem on the offense.

Surround him with an o-line that can block. Let him adjust to having time in the pocket. He will be okay.

Too hard on Cassel. His salary isn't very high compared across the league.

He has promise but HE NEEDS TOOLS TO SUCCEED. No line, no running back, no receivers. Those interceptions were a sign to me he was trying to do too much, not that he’s a bad QB and is just throwing INT’s because he’s bad.

were absolutely horrid for most of the 70’s and ALL of the 80’s, then they had about 12-13 yeras of being pretty good, making several post-season appearances. Now…it appears that we are going to be in another 10-15 year drought and this team will be the laughing stock of the NFL for many seasons to come.

Don't be rediculous.

Cassel is an ex Patroit. Brodie never played for the patriots. He doesn’t know the Patroit way. Matt is a great OB. Stupid receivers drop his passes. He doesn’t have enough time. He has a strong arm. He just has the wrong 52 around him. All he needs is the right 52. Cassel gives us the best chance to win.

Give me a break

It’s been so long since Cassel has had a ball in his hands it’s hard for him to part with it, I rewinded a lot of plays where he took a sack and he had enough time to make a few reads and get the ball away. Then Cassel fell apart with the rest of the team. Get his bust ready for the hall of fame……….

brutal game...

glimpses of hope?

Great goal-line stands by the defense all day
Mays is a STUD in short yardage and stopping the run.

O’Callaghan played well, as did Barry Richardson, i think… Wade Smith wasn’t good at C, and Goff was terrible as usual

Turnovers hurt… a LOT…. as do big plays allowed by the passing defense
Charles looked good on KRs and on offense… and LJ ran hard when he had a chance.

Bowe’s catch was awesome, Wade had a couple good ones, and Long looks like he can really play.

To Todd Haley

I see you took a page off of Jim Zorn “Play calling for Dummies with losing record”

How da F%%$ do u not see that SD was blitzing with their DBs and yet you spread the TE’s wide instead of staying home to block?

Knowing that the 5 f%@$$#ing O-line men can’t block 4 D-line men, you spread the offense more when SD is blitzing?

Why would you not insert Croyle when you see Cassel losing confidence?

How can you spread 5 wide and Cassel has no open receivers when SD blitz? Someone has to be open and it seem to be Sean “slippery hands” Cassel chooses to toss the ball to each time?

Predictions as of 06.24.2009.

Larry Johnson will be a top 3 fantasy pick once again in 2010 (after a monster season in 2009.)
Dwayne Bowe will be a 2009 Pro Bowl selection.

to be fair...

it wouldn’t help to have Ryan in blocking when they blitz a DB… he’s worthless in pass blocking

the O-Linemen did a good job on the D-linemen… but the LB and DBs came sailing through

and you don’t just bench your QB when he struggles… he’s gotta fight through it and be better for it

Any coach that can’t beat division opponents is very bad sign. I don’t care how bad the talent pool may be when you can’t get your guys riled up for a division rival, you SUCK!

Losing to OAK at home? and now getting BLOWN OUT by Chargers at home?

even during the shittier days of OAK, with Vermeils potent offense, OAK would come into Arrowhead and put up a fight despite a shitty team.

What made most of you jump on the Haley bandwagon? This guy hasn’t done anything special here and he didn’t do anything special in Arizona. He was the OC for a team that already had great talent by the time he got there and actually played second fiddle to Russ Grimm the first year he was there. Sure Haley can call good plays for great players but what qualified him to run an entire team. And instead of being a responsible HC and letting his assistants help him and allow him to focus on game playing he fires the OC and QB coach. Really smart guy we got!!!!!!!

We should have stuck with the mobile QB this year

Thigpen could atleast make plays with his feet. When the pocket colapsed he could run and make plays. Cassel has to usually take a sack or throw an INT. Should not have brought in the Franchise QB in this situation….should have waited and either drafted a good one to take over or traded like we did with Cassel….

This is not good for Cassel’s confidence or his body….not good for the team.

Our Defensive Scheme is terrible

Pendergast just doesn’t seem to have a clue when calling plays. I just feel like Cassel was trying a bit harder than usual to try and get us back into the game and made some bad decisions with 2 of the picks. I am most upset about the blocked punt…that sort of mistake is inexcusable.

I was primarily referring to what we got for Thigpen

Don’t you think its possible that people who evaluate professional football talent for a living are probably better at it than you the vast majority of the time? Have you ever seen a spread offense win a Superbowl? Have you have seen Thigpen have success (if you call winning one game in ten starts success) in anything other than the ArrowSpread?

by KCBear on Oct 25, 2009 3:44 PM CDT up reply actions

sure

But that doesn’t mean they are right. 32 teams full of talent evaluators let Tom Brady sit there for what 199 picks. Cassel is 1 win in 6 starts is that worth the price paid?

like averagegatsby said

by KCBear on Oct 25, 2009 3:48 PM CDT up reply actions

We can agree to disagree

If Thigpen ever wins a playoff game, I will clearly have been wrong about his talent level. If Cassel continues to only win one out of six for the rest of his contract, I will have been wrong about him too. We’ll just have see how it plays out

by KCBear on Oct 25, 2009 3:51 PM CDT up reply actions

The point isn't

that Thigpen is the QBOTF. The point is we gave up a second round pick which could have been used to help the O Line and Lots of money which could have been used anywhere else on the team for a QB that is hardly if at all an upgrade

Honestly, Haley's play calling wasn't too bad today. It's wasn't spectacular.

However, I will say this team was poorly prepared/coached. Pendergast’s play calling is memorable only for being disgustingly bad. Tim Krumrie needs to go as well.

by SupremeChief on Oct 25, 2009 3:32 PM CDT reply actions

Uh, I said in an earlier post he made 3 or 4 bad calls. That happened to be one of them.

You guys are going way too hard on Haley’s play calling and not enough on the failure to execute.

Haley does deserve credit for not having this team prepared. That is all on his shoulders. In that aspect of the game, he failed miserably. Play calling is the least of my worries.

I think Vermeil

may have sabotaged his D a little. From what I remember the defense got half the practice time the offense did.

Its possible, but I think Gunther would be doing just as good. We would also still be in the 4-3, meaning we probably would have drafted Curry instead of Jackson, so this team would look very different.

Interesting point

I will say I don’t trust Gunther as a talent analyst. Gunther was always high on the series of D line busts we had.

The thing that really made me interested in seeing the Chiefs move to the 3-4 was Haley’s comment about the difficulty in planning against it. But I think a big key is how well the team blitzes, and we really suck at that so far. The pre-snap tips we’ve been giving EVERY GAME is driving me nuts.

theres more to it than that...

Personally I would prefer if more of the “pre snap” blitzing were more of a ruse… See guys back off a little more. When you crowd the line that much its to create confusion on the line, so the blockers do not know who their assignment is

Agreed, but how many times has our pre-snap tips

Not been a clear indication of our post-snap blitz. That is the most frustrating thing for me on the D this year, even more than the tackling (which honestly seems improved [I’m tempted to stir the pot and say it’s because Pollard is gone]).

I want to know what Pioli is thinking...

Let’s see Mr. Pioli.. who continues to look for the “right 53”… Why don’t you start with the right coaching staff, and I know things got off to a late start by hiring Haley after the SB, but c’mon, Clancy Pendergrast is way in over his head, and I’m starting to wonder if Haley knows what he’s doing… He’s clearly overwhelmed, I get that, but man, I don’t see where he’s getting much help on that coaching staff he and Pioli assembled.. Bill Muir is a waste, and Tim Krumrie was bad last year, so why he was retained makes absolutely no sense… Now the draft, which is turning in to a disaster… Tyson Jackson was a reach and hasn’t made a dent on defense, and while I understand he’s not going to get us DT-like sack numbers, I’d be happy with a big play, maybe blowing up a run in the backfield, and I can’t even see that… Magee, wow, where’s he at… Donald Washington, great athlete, which is great for Haley’s conditioning test, but not real football… Colin Brown, hmm, he’s doing the offensive line well on the Practice squad… 6th rounder, oh yeah, he got released today… Jarvis Wiliams? And finally Ryan Succop, who missed a FG today, he’s the Chiefs best draft pick? And then, to make matters worse, you trade Tank Tyler for only a fifth rounder? A guy three years into his NFL career, is only worth a fifth round pick? So, we’re looking at another Colin Brown like pick instead of Tank Tyler, a legitimate NFL D-Lineman who will probably get worlds better once he gets real coaching…

I’m not sure what Pioli the Great is doing. I’m starting to wonder if it really was all Belichick in New England… I’m not giving up on Pioli, but I’ve been extremely underwhelmed with what he’s doing… I know we’re not going to be SB contenders this year, but I have a hard time believing there wasn’t more that could be done to make this a better team.

This is a real team not a fantasy football and your attempt to get more draft picks JUST CUZ is puzzling when you can’t even draft and find the right coaches.

Stop being an ASS and drop that ego – YOU Screwed up with the hiring of Haley. You waited too damn long and McDaniels didn’t wait when he got offered Den’s job and you let Jim Schwatz get away to Det.

I don’t at all disagree with dealing him. The issue being now is that Bowe is completely exposed. Tony took a little bit of pressure off of him and let him get down field because Tony was taking up backs in the mid-range. Now Bowe is the only respectable down-field threat and everyone knows it.

NOPE

Tony was a worthy trade – just for tony’s sake that he gets to played with a good team that has a chance to get to the SB.

What we didn’t need to trade for was Matt Cassel and and signing him to a huge contract and giving Cassel $26 when the team isn’t making a difference this year.

9 games, 1043 yards, 5.3 average, 115 yards per game, 6 TD’s and 9 INT’s with a 55.4 passer rating is NOT a successful rookie year. Eli didnt really step up into a good QB until the end of 2007.

Its time to stop....

making excuses and defending [layers and coaches….this team is bad. I knew it would not be pretty this yr with the rebuilding,,but my GOD! This is ugly. Haley is making some of the stupidiest calls I have ever seen. Cassel could not hit the broad side of a bard with a deep pass, recievers dropping passes for no apparent reasons, the O Line is plain terrible, no running game, and the D has its moments, but cant stop 3rd down to save their ass…I dont know what haley was thinking about when he went for it on 4th down in the first quarter when we were only down 7. Then when we had fourth down and a foot he calls a pass play. Luckily we got bailed out with a pass interference call..Cassel missed 2 WIDE OPEN recievers for big gains, and the pass to Wade on the sideline COULD have been a lot better with a better throw. Adjusting to Cassels pass made his momentum carry him out of bounds…The mark of a good QB is that they make the players around them play better,Cassel does not have that ability. I dont give a shit about a QB contraversy, I think Croyle should have been inserted just to see if he could move the offense better. He proved it to me in the first game against the Ravens. Look at his stats, that one game has been the better than any numbers put up by Cassel. We are under the cap and need consistant play, if we have to take a hit on Cassel salary this yr, so be it. We need to find out who gives us the best chance to win now…Like I said, i didnt expect miracles this yr, but I dont see any improvement at all…ANYWHERE!…Herm could have done this well.

No, he never said this.

An anonymous source in the Kansas City Star said it. Funny, no one has the balls to ask him if he ever said it. Yeahhh…..I’m gonna be on the side of “he never said it.”

ever heard of developing a QB?

probably not because the chiefs never have

Let's see...we have decent backups in Croyle and Gut, both of which are fairly young.

We need players who can come in and start right away…not ride the pine for a few years. Bad idea.

are we 7-0 with Pollard?

Just Joking....

I dont care the position but it better be the best damn player at that point in the draft…..QB, RB, WR, OL…..It dont matter we need playmakers

Fine with me....

We just need more talent in the draft…..not like last draft…..not much talent at all.

funny thing though - a lot of times Whitlock is actually RIGHT and then others say what he said to begin with

… so I guess if it’s written or said by someone ELSE it must be or could be true, but if it’s from Whitlock it HAS to be a lie …

sorry, I happen to like Whitlock and find him insightful and right more often than not

That's fine, but like I said above, the more I hear Haley myself the less credible

I find that statement. Or on the remote chance he DID say it it’s completely out of context.

OK, so this one is in the books as another loss.

It may be the most telling thing that could have happened to us. Now Haley and company have two weeks to get ready for two very winnable games against the Jags and a rematch against the Raiders. We will get a really good idea of what kind of coach Haley is and what kind of character this team has.

Sure - we were in all the games, unlike last year

We’ve had a bad game where things got out of hand, but they kept going. So how do they respond. Are you saying I’m wrong and they won’t indicate anything?

I mean at this point last year

we fluked out a win vs. Denver but other than that we weren’t even competitive until week 8 against the Jets.

I didn’t mean all the games last year, just at this same point in the season. Sorry for the confusion. I didn’t make it clear.

CHiefs were not ready nor up to the challenge

Well the Chargers were playing to extend their season after coming off a poor showing at home last week and instead of taking advantage the Chiefs were not up to the challenge in any shape or form. I want to be patient with Haley and Cassel but leaders make their team better and help hide their weakness. The sad thing is with this OL we never going to know until this time next year if Cassel is a QB worth a damn. Time to regroup over the bye week. Fire the OL coach. Re hire a OC. Bench Larry “slow to hole” Johnson and go sign a CB and move Carr to your nickel guy. I never would have believed it but after watching the receivers run bye #23 today I never would have thought I would see anyone worst than William Bartee…

I don't see this game as an indicator

This was one of those games where every mistake became costly and it just went against them. It happens. That’s why I’m interested to see how they come back after the bye.

Even good teams have these types of games. Im not really worried, it sucks, but at I still believe this team is going in the right direction.

New coaching staff, new front office, 20 some odd new players. They pretty much started over.

I recall a few games where we got our asses handed to us by domination. Or am i missing the point?

My favorite part about a loss like this

Is the people that run over to their computers after it’s over to call for the firing of every player and coach and advocate moving the team out of the city because they’ll never be good again.

I guess those people have never had a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day. Good teams have days like this, too. Sometimes their natural talent allows them to sneak away with a win. Other times they’re not so lucky—ask Philadelphia fans how they feel about the Raiders.

Imagine if you had a terrible day at work. Your alarm didn’t go off, the shower wouldn’t run hot water, you burnt your toast and spilled your coffee on your new pants, you got to work late, your computer had a virus, and when it was time for the big presentation, you realized that you left all of your papers back at home. What if your boss called you in to his office at the end of the day and said, “I know it wasn’t long ago that I was talking about how you’d replace me as manager someday, but that was the worst performance I’ve ever seen. I’m going to ignore all of your prior successes and any promise you may have to become better and fire you here and now.”

If I am repeating an earlier post, my apologies...

The picture of Haley walking off the field says a lot about his calling. He looks like he doesn’t have a clue what to do next. I’m not a Croyle fan, but let him have a shot since Cassel isn’t producing. I’m aware the lack of an O-line is a major problem, but see if Croyle is part of the “right 53” game plan in action.

If part of the reason Cassel plays after weekly failures is pressure from Pioli, he needs to be told to stick to team operations and let player personnel be left up to the coaching staff. All it seems Pioli wants to do is pick up any and every cast off from the Patriots to mirror their team. If he’s that fond of working with New England personnel, let him go back east to Foxboro.
